Woman charged after deputies assaulted A woman is accused of drunkenly assaulting deputies at Stafford Marketplace, according to the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office. Kristen Younger, 35, of Stafford, is charged with assault on law enforcement, assault on a healthcare worker, disorderly conduct on hospital grounds, drunk in public, and obstruction by force or threat, SCSO spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo said. Deputies responded around 8:30 p.m. June 18 to reports of an intoxicated woman at the Stafford Marketplace near Buffalo Wild Wings. They reportedly found

Police chase ends in Dumfries wreck Two people were able to avoid arrest after a police pursuit late June 19 that started in North Stafford and ended in a wreck in a Dumfries neighborhood, according to the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office. A deputy was patrolling around 11:36 p.m. in the area of Garrisonville and Doc Stone roads when he observed a vehicle swerving in the roadway, SCSO spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo said. The deputy initiated a traffic stop and the vehicle pulled up to the gas pumps at the 7-Eleven at the corner of Garrisonville and Mine roads. As he approached the vehicle, the deputy detected the odor of marijuana, Vicinanzo said.

The driver then accelerated and sped off out of the parking lot and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle headed north on Interstate 95 and eventually into Prince William County before the driver took exit 152 toward Dumfries. The vehicle entered a neighborhood and struck a parked car, Vicinanzo said. The driver and passenger fled on foot and a search by units from Stafford, Prince William and the Virginia State Police could not locate the pair. The investigation is ongoing and deputies are working to identify the driver of the vehicle, Vicinanzo said.

units attempted to take her into custody for public intoxication, but Younger resisted and became uncooperative, Vicinanzo said. During the course of the arrest, she kicked a deputy in the torso, and slammed her head into the partition between the front and back seat of the cruiser, causing a small laceration to her forehead, she said. When exiting the vehicle, Younger reportedly spit on two deputies and kicked a nurse and two deputies while being treated at a local hospital. She also repeatedly shrieked at the top of her lungs and threatened to kill an SCSO sergeant and

attempted to bite him, Vicinanzo said. Younger was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. Her husband, Anthony Younger, 46, of Stafford was also taken into custody for refusing to comply with deputies’ commands to stop blocking traffic and to get out of the fire lane, Vicinanzo said. He reportedly also attempted to interfere with deputies during his wife’s arrest. He was taken into custody and incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a secured bond on charges of obstruction of justice, pedestrian in the roadway and public swearing.

CRIME BRIEFS DONATION BIN STOLEN, THREE PEOPLE SOUGHT The Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying three people after a donation bin was stolen from the Walmart at 217 Garrisonville Road on June 21. The bin containing about $200 for the Children’s Miracle Network was picked up around 2 a.m. by two women who placed it in a motorized cart before leaving the store and walking towards the nearby 7-Eleven. A man who had been spotted in a car with the women entering the Walmart

parking lot around 1:30 a.m. was spotted a short time later on camera in the department store looking for the women. He was wearing a security uniform and badge.

HIT-AND-RUN IN WALMART LOT Deputies are investigating a hit-andrun wreck in the Walmart parking lot at 217 Garrisonville Road. The victim reported that her parked vehicle was struck sometime between 1 p.m. and 10:17 p.m. on June 13. She found damage to the front bumper of her vehicle when she left work.

Fredericksburg Baseball to begin work at new site Fredericksburg Baseball has announced it is moving forward with construction on the new $35 million ballpark early next month, with plans for opening in April 2020. The Potomac Nationals will be moving from Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge and playing under a new name at a site in Celebrate Virginia South near the Fredericksburg Expo & Conference Center. More than 2,400 fans offered suggestions in the “Name the Team” contest. Fredericksburg Baseball is moving forward with finalizing the team name and developing a new logo and uniform designs for a public reveal this fall. “We were astounded by the extraordinary volume of the response, and the incredible creativity of our fans. This outpouring shows the continued strength of our fan base, which builds on the excitement and support we’ve already seen from the community,” said team owner Art Silber “We can’t wait to unveil the team name and logo, and see our players walk onto the field in April 2020 in their Fredericksburg uniforms.” The team will also open a store at 601 Caroline St. in downtown Fredericksburg on July 5, with Fredericksburg Baseball hats, T-shirts and more. Fans can also view seating maps, renderings of the stadium and sit in sample stadium seats. Fredericksburg Baseball is also sponsoring a concert from 7-9 p.m. on July 5 as part of the Fredericksburg Area Museum’s “Sounds of the Summer” concert series in Market Square. In early July, the team also plans to begin the process for seat selection for those fans that have joined the Founders Club for 2020 and allow Founders Club members to put down their initial deposit. Fans who have already joined the Fredericksburg Baseball Founders Club, or who would like to join, will be able to see full seating maps and related pricing at the store. A separate mailing will be made to Founders Club members in the coming weeks with details on how the seat selection process will work. The Potomac Nationals, a high Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, are completing their final season at Pfitzner Stadium after team owners failed to reach a deal with Prince William County in 2017 for a new stadium in Woodbridge. After failing to score a minor-league team in the past, Fredericksburg picked up the ball in 2018 and successfully negotiated a deal and broke ground at the site in February. The new 5,000-seat stadium will be privately financed, with Fredericksburg expected to commit $1.05 million to the team for 30 years – covering about 40 percent of the financing for the park. Fredericksburg said it will meet that commitment through money generated by the stadium, including a projected $700,000 in tax revenue.

Stafford completes first road study project Drivers on Andrew Chapel Road will notice wider shoulders, a new layer of asphalt and brighter, freshly painted lane markings between Courthouse Road and Brooke Road. Work was recently completed on a joint “wedge widening” project to slightly widen Andrew Chapel Road that emerged from a partnership between Stafford County and the Virginia Department of Transportation, according to a news release. “This road was identified earlier this year in our Comprehensive Road Study as a road needing improvement to make

it safer and we’ve already funded it and completed it,” said Chairman of the Board of Supervisors Gary Snellings, RHartwood. “We are working hard to make these changes around the County, with VDOT as a partner.” Andrew Chapel Road leads to residential areas in Brooke and Marlborough Point and carries commuter traffic destined for the Virginia Railway Express station at Brooke. Daily, around 4,700 vehicles travel on this two-lane road. With the road already scheduled to be paved this summer by VDOT,

Red Cross seeking donors to prevent summer shortage The Red Cross urges donors of all blood types to give now to help prevent delays in medical care this summer, according to a news release. While thousands of blood donors have answered the call for blood donations this season, more donors are needed now to help ensure patients don’t have to wait for blood. During the summer, especially around holidays like Independence Day, donations often don’t keep pace with patient needs. The Red Cross is thanking all

those who come to donate July 1-6 with an exclusive Red Cross Missing Types T-shirt, while supplies last. Upcoming blood donation opportunities include Onelife Fitness, 315 Garrisonville Road, on July 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To d o n a t e , d o w n l o a d t h e American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood. or g or c a l l 8 0 0 - R E D C R O S S (800-733-2767).

Stafford invested around $124,000 of its state secondary road funding to widen the shoulders of Andrew Chapel Road by slightly more than one foot on each side. Called a wedge widening, this slight expansion of the road’s footprint occurs before a paving project. This is just one of the many ways that VDOT and Stafford County are working together to sequence work that will improve the safety of the roads. VDOT crews then followed the shoulder widening with a uniform coat of asphalt across the expanded road, topped

with new centerline and safety edge lines to sharply define the travel lanes. The project was finished in June. “Wedge widening gives drivers additional space to recover if their vehicle’s wheels stray from the travel lanes,” said Lynne Keenan, VDOT Fredericksburg Residency Administrator. ‘The extra pavement will help drivers keep their tires on the road. We are very impressed with the coordination that occurred on this project and are working closely with Stafford County staff to do more projects like this in the future.”

2019 VHSL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

Sorrentino a winner wherever he goes HUGH RIST » BY FOR INSIDENOVA

When the call came notifying current Mountain View and former Hylton head football coach Lou Sorrentino of his selection to the Virginia High School League’s Hall of Fame, Sorrentino said he was both excited and taken aback. “I’m thrilled because it’s nice to be recognized,” said Sorrentino, who was inducted June 23 in Charlottesville. “And I didn’t really see it coming. It’s really a case of surrounding yourself with good people, from players to administrators to parents and having the players do the work it takes to play well.” Make no mistake about it, Sorrentino’s credentials are Hall of Fame worthy, from a 224-108 career record to guiding Culpeper to an undefeated 14-0 season and a Division 5 state title in 1999 to a 70-24 record in eight seasons at Hylton that included a Division 6 state title in 2002. He took over a Mountain View program in 2010 that had gone 13-37 since the school opened in 2005. In nine seasons, Sorrentino has posted a 58-46 mark. He began his head coaching career at George Mason High School in Falls Church, where he spent two seasons. He led the Mustangs to the playoffs his first season in 1991 and went 12-9 overall for a program that had gone 0-10 as recently

as 1986. Sorrentino noted two highlights related to his time at Hylton. He was proud to sustain the success engineered by legendary coach Bill Brown at the school and learned a lesson he couldn’t have learned in his other coaching stops. “There’s challenges that come with coaching a winning [and established] program, from blend- Lou Sorrentino has a career 224-108 record at four different high schools, ing coaching staffs including Mountain View. THEATRE REVIEW | MAGGIE LAWRENCE

‘Pirates’ is the very model of modern operetta They fancy themselves a dangerous lot, but the grim list of those killed and captured by the Pirates of Penzance is…nonexistent. Their job is to be fierce and take hostages, but somehow - dash it all – the hostages always turn out to be orphans! And being orphans themselves, they just can’t take ungentlemanly advantage. That means our pirates are no more successful now in 2019 than they were back in 1879. That’s when this Gilbert and Sullivan jewel first held audiences captive with its rapier wit, and it’s been swashing its buckles ever since. Three cannon shots of congratulation to Riverside for staging this gold nugget and doing it justice. In a whimsical modification, director Catherine Flye has renamed this the “Rascals of the Rappahannock” and brought the pirates to Fredericksburg in the time of George III, as opposed to the Victorian era Cornwall coast. She has also captured a critical element in its success: tone. “Pirates” anticipates Monty Pythonesque humor by nearly a century, and this crew understands that a joyful embrace of English absurdity is the only way to go. And humor is a serious business. The first bit of funny happened years earlier when Ruth, a hard-of-hearing nurse, misunderstood her employer’s directive to apprentice young Frederic to “pilots” and turned him over to “pirates” instead. They’re

not particularly ferocious pirates, although they do say “ARrrr!” very well, and Frederic forged some tender friendships. But now, apprenticeship over, he must go into the world, renounce his past, and get a job. Alas, honor dictates that his new job will be stamping out piracy. The story would end here rather abruptly but for two things. Frederic sees for the first time in his sheltered life what real girls look like and promptly falls in love with Mabel.

JUNE JUNE28 28-JULY - JULY 4, 2019 ||INSIDENOVA.COM INSIDENOVA.COM

And Ruth, with the help of The Pirate King, convinces Frederic that, since he was born on Feb. 29, he is only five and must stay with the pirates until he has celebrated 21 actual birthdays. Kudos to producing artistic director, Patrick A’Hearn, for throwing the net far and wide to score what is a near flawless cast. You don’t get these results by making “cheap and available” your first criterion. I am reminded of this axiom while re-

calling some of the truly outstanding performances. Andrew Ross Wynn as MajorGeneral Boshington, proud father of the seven damsels, blusters his way to the stage and holds us in thrall with the one song that has survived down to the present, “I am the very model of a modern majorgeneral.” It’s a virtuoso piece of patter and wit, the performance of which is the operetta’s version of a trapeze act. The charmingly befuddled Ruth could have been thrown away on any smiling local of middle years, but was not. Sherri Edelen has the specific look, move, attitude and voice for this important role and holds her own in solo and ensemble. I’m not overly demanding about my Pirate Kings, but I must insist on a gent who can sing “Away, away! My heart’s on fire” while looking splendid in purple silk and a long curly wig. David Jennings is our man. The strength of his stage presence balances the ensemble of his ragged pirate crew, and he is impossible not to watch. It’s all delicious, well-made fun. Let us hope that audiences 140 years from now will still get “Pirates” swashbuckling appeal. Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance” (or “The Rascals of the Rappahannock”) is playing at Riverside Center for the Performing Arts, 95 Riverside Parkway, Fredericksburg, through July 7.
