Wayne Butler of Doody Calls of Stafford walks in a grid pattern in search of pet waste during a recent appointment.
A Dirty Job Poop scoopers making messy yards spot-less JULIA LEDOUX » BY FOR INSIDENOVA
Joe Sitzelberger owns his own dog training company, Off Leash K9, and he has five beloved dogs: two German shepherds, a Belgian Malinois, a golden retriever and a French bulldog. But that doesn’t mean Sitzelberger takes care of the messy business of picking up behind his pups. For that job, he’s hired Doody Calls, a pet waste removal company. “I was tired of smelling it and looking at it,” he said. “For me, I can go out and cut the grass now and not hyper-focus on where I’m walking.” He’s been a client of Doody Calls for three years. “It’s one less thing you have to worry about with your dogs,” he explained. “The more time you can spend with them, working on their behavior, everyone is happier. You don’t realize how awesome the service is until you do it.”
CLEANING UP “Rain or shine, hot or cold, a dog’s gotta poop,” said Wayne Butler. He’s been with the company in Stafford County for five years and has served as an operations manager for the last two years. On a recent trek out into the grass of Sitzelberger’s yard on Windsong Way, Butler walked in a grid pattern to pick up dog poop. Butler said the pattern ensured that every square inch of the yard was covered and no doody was left behind. “It’s the same thing as mowing the grass,” he said. “We do it twice and double check all areas, flower beds, patios, everything.” Butler said it takes about 20 minutes to

do a yard. “We’re in and out,” he said.
‘REMOVE THE TOXINS’ It’s not just about a clean yard. Butler said it’s a misconception that pet waste doesn’t negatively impact the environment. “Pet waste, dog waste in particular, is in the same classification, according to the EPA in 1991 as pesticides and herbicides,” he said. “People don’t realize that. It it a whole lot more harmful than people realize. That’s why it’s important to remove it. Removing it is the best thing to do.” Dog waste contains a host of dangerous bacteria and parasites. Dog waste contains campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis, e.coli bacteria, roundworm, tuberculosis, gastroenteritis, giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis. Stafford County’s Department of Public Works notes that runoff from pet waste isn’t treated — it goes directly into streams and eventually the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Failure to properly dispose of pet waste is a Class 4 misdemeanor and subject to a $250 fine. Keeping a dog’s living space clean is just as important to their overall health as diet and exercise, Butler noted. “You’ve got to remove the toxins from the environment,” he stressed. “It’s not healthy to be around. Toxins and parasites can come back and harm you. Don’t give them an option. By doing this beforehand and preventing it before it becomes a problem.” WHEN DOODY CALLS Doody Calls of Stafford franchise owner Ron Cooper said the service costs about the same as a large pizza, averaging between $16 and $20 for weekly service at a single family home with one to two dogs. “It’s the cost of eating out,” he said. The service helps keep a property’s value up and creates a more healthy living JOB

bital journeys, but on a trip as far away as the moon. What’s more, consider the timeline. President John Kennedy had only made it official U.S. policy that we would launch a manned moon mission before the end of the 1960’s. He made this proclamation in 1962. Seven years later, in an incredibly short period of time, the American scientific and engineering community had conquered every technical problem, learned the business of spaceflight, dealt with every setback and landed humans on the moon. It’s a staggering feat. It deserves to be remembered. But there is one thing. For reasons that still don’t make sense, at least to me, we never went back. Since 1972 no human has ventured into deep space. We have done wonders with our interplanetary probes, our rovers have explored the surface of Mars, we have tested new propulsion systems, we have vastly expanded our skills in materials development and computing, we built the International Space Station, and have discovered thousands of planets orbiting around other stars. But, still, we haven’t ventured more than a few hundred miles into space. So, on this 50th anniversary, as the new technologies have started to converge, along with a growing passion to “see what’s out there”, let’s recommit ourselves to putting humans back in space. The Moon still has it secrets and Mars, beckoning us since ancient times, awaits. The men and women who first put humans on the moon a half century ago thought that life in space was our eventual destiny. It still is. Monument display to celebrate Apollo 11 GREG HAMBRICK, » BY ghambrick@insidenova.com
The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 with a once-ina-lifetime celebration at the Washington Monument. For three nights, July 16-18, a fullsized, 363-foot Saturn V rocket will be projected onto the east face of the Washington Monument from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. On July 19-20, 17-minute special, “Apollo 50: Go for the Moon,” will combine full-motion projection-mapping artwork on the monument and archival footage to recreate the launch of Apollo 11 and tell the story of the first moon landing. “Our identity as Americans is defined in part by the historic act of landing humans on the moon and returning them safely to the Earth,” said Ellen Stofan,
John and Adrienne Mars director of the museum. “The Washington Monument is a symbol of our collective national achievements and what we can and will achieve in the future. It took 400,000 people from across the 50 states to make Apollo a reality. This program celebrates them, and we hope it inspires generations too young to have experienced Apollo firsthand to define their own moonshot.” The public will be able to experience “Apollo 50: Go for the Moon” from viewing areas on the National Mall in front of the Smithsonian Castle between ninth and 12th streets. The viewing area will be outfitted with full sound, projection screens and a 40-foot-wide recreation of the famous Kennedy Space Center countdown clock. The free show will run three times on both nights—9:30 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. More information about
the viewing area and show times can be found at https://airandspace.si.edu/ go-for-the-moon, or text Apollo50GO to 888777 for live updates the day of the show. The National Air and Space Museum commissioned the creation of “Apollo 50: Go for the Moon” by 59 Productions, a multi-award-winning company of artists, architects, designers and technologists offering world-leading expertise in design for stage and live events, architectural projection-mapping to exhibition design, VR experiences and technical consultancy, according to a news release. Support for “Apollo 50: Go for the Moon” and all of the museum’s Apollo 50th-anniversary programming is provided by Boeing with additional support from Raytheon. No federal funding is being used for this program. For more, visit airandspace.si.edu/ apollo50.

Publix makes move to Northern Virginia Large grocer plans for store near Embrey Mill
Publix Super Markets will open its first Northern Virginia location with a new store in North Stafford next year, the company announced last week. The chain and the Stafford County Economic Development & Tourism Office said that Publix has signed a lease for a new store location at Embrey Mill Town Center, on the northeast corner of Courthouse Road and Mine Road. The store will be about 48,000 square feet and will have about 130 employees, Publix said. The store is projected to open in early 2021. Publix, based in Lakeland, Fla., is the largest employee-owned grocery chain in the country, with 1,221 stores in seven Southeastern states. In 2018, the chain had more than $36 billion in sales and employed over 200,000 people. In Virginia, Publix has 15 stores, mostly in the Richmond area. Its closest location to Northern Virginia is at 9601 Jefferson Davis Highway near Fredericksburg.

County schools announce new appointments The Stafford County School Board recently announced the appointment of new administrators: Patrick Byrnett will assume the position of executive director of human resources. For the past year, he served as deputy chief of talent acquisition and retention for the District of Columbia Public Schools. Previously, he spent seven years with The New Teacher Project, Inc., where he served in various roles. He also practiced law for four years. With D.C. schools, Byrnett redesigned the school leader recruitment and selection process, and advocated for and secured policies to remove unnecessary barriers to recruitment and hiring. With The New Teacher Project, he designed and executed over 50 professional development sessions on model evaluation policies and practices for school leaders and teachers and provided public schools in Baltimore, Washington and Indianapolis with more than 200 effective new teachers over a three-year period via the teaching fellows program in each city. Mr. Byrnett earned a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service degree from Georgetown University, a Master of Public Policy degree from Duke University, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. Roxana McCarthy will assume the position of Director of Equity and Accountabil-
ity. She has been the district’s federal grants and programs specialist since 2016. Prior to her current role, she served as the ESOL and world languages coordinator for three years and an ESOL/Spanish teacher and world languages department chair at Mountain View High School for seven years. McCarthy also taught Spanish at Holy Cross Academy for eight years. She led school-based teams to create a holistic identification protocol to identify students at risk of academic failure in the county’s Title I schools. In addition, she designed the needs assessment framework for the English Language and Title III grant. McCarthy also has experience with testing, having provided management, training and coordination of personnel for screener tests and for English Language Proficiency assessments. McCarthy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Barry University and a Master of Education degree in Spanish and ESOL from the University of Mary Washington. She is currently enrolled in a Master of Education program in Educational Leadership, Administration and Supervision at the College of William and Mary. Timothy Roberts will assume the position of principal of Brooke Point High School. He has been an assistant principal at Brooke Point since 2012. He was also the school’s principal intern for four years and
was a special education and resource teacher for six years. As assistant principal, Roberts has worked collaboratively with department chairs, central office, and the principal to design a master schedule that reduced class sizes and the number of teacher preps as well as met the varying interests and needs of students. In addition, he developed and implemented the first countywide High Riser Program, a summer program for rising freshmen identified as at-risk. Roberts serves as a mentor and intern supervisor for teachers pursuing careers in educational leadership. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Master of Education degree with an endorsement in Special Education from Mary Washington College. He completed a Certificate of Completion in Educational Leadership from the University of Mary Washington. Andrew Bathke will assume the position of principal of Dixon-Smith Middle School. He has served in the division for the last 22 years: three years as a fifth grade teacher at Winding Creek Elementary, four years as an eighth grade social studies teacher, eight years as an assistant principal at Rodney E. Thompson Middle School, and the last seven years as assistant principal at Stafford High School. Prior to coming to Stafford, he was an elementary teacher in Texas and a preschool/kindergarten teacher in Missouri.
At Stafford High School, Bathke refined the special needs course request process, expanded ESOL supports and standardized foundation mathematics supports. In the counseling and student services realms, he implemented online counseling requests and expanded elective opportunities for students in low incidence programs. Bathke earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri – Kansas City and a Master of Education degree in Education Leadership from George Mason University. Karen Bingham will assume the position of principal of Widewater Elementary School. She has been a Stafford County educator for the last 24 years, serving as an elementary music specialist for 15 years and an assistant principal for the last nine years. HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Colonial Forge to host fourtime defending state champs DAVID FAWCETT » BY dfawcett@insidenova.com
When John Brown and Loren Johnson ran into each other at a football clinic, they shared a mutual need. Both their high school programs had openings on their schedules. A matchup between the two state powerhouses made sense. Under former Stonewall Jackson head coach Loren Johnson, the Springers are one of three programs to win four straight Class 5 state titles. One more in 2019 sets a Virginia record. Colonial Forge, meanwhile, has won 20 straight regular-season games and gone 52-11 since 2014. The two teams last met in 2014 when Highland Springs won the season opener 36-13. “They win and win a lot and we win a lot,” Brown said. “We both have a hard time finding games.” Johnson told Brown not to wait if the Eagles found an opponent sooner. But the schedule remained free on an available date for both schools. The two agreed to a two-year series with Highland Springs visiting Colonial Forge Nov. 1. “It came out of necessity, but it’s a byproduct of being a good game in a good atmosphere,” Brown said. “This will be a game on a lot of people’s radars. It’s one they will want to see.”

With a new school building being constructed near the football field, the Springers are scheduled to play all their games on the road in 2019 and 2020. Previously scheduled home games could still be played in Henrico County at a neutral site. Both teams return plenty of key players from last season. Highland Springs, which went 15-0 in 2018 and has gone 68-4 since 2014, brings back senior safety Malcolm Greene and senior athlete David Laney. Both are rated among the top 40 players in Virginia for the class of 2020 by 247Sports.com. Greene, who has 29 offers, including one from Clemson, was first-team allstate in 2018 and Laney was second-team all-state. Three all-state performers return for Colonial Forge in senior defensive lineman Chase Harley, senior offensive lineman Mason Rega and junior defensive end Michael Vinson. Quarterback Madden Lowe, the Commonwealth District Offensive Player of the Year, also returns. Highland Springs is one of seven 2018 playoff teams on Colonial Forge’s 10-game regular season schedule and one of three who are non-district opponents. The others are Freedom, the 2018 Class 6 state-runner up led by former Colonial Forge assistant Darryl Overton, and Hylton, Brown’s alma mater. Hylton was a late addition after Osbourn dropped the Bulldogs from its schedule. “We will be facing stiff competition, but to be the best you have to play the best,” Brown said. “If we are the last team standing it will be because of the oppoQuarterback Madden Lowe returns for Colonial Forge. nents we played.” WWW.JENNIFERMUHLENBRUCK.COM CLASSIFIED | LIFESTYLE | SPORTS | OPINION | BUSINESS | EDUCATION | NEWS

CRITTER CORNER | KAREN PEAK
It’s not fair to the pets During my young adulthood, an agricultural club I belonged to managed a barn at an annual fair in Massachusetts. During breaks over those crisp October days, I would often walk the midway, look at the sideshow and watch people playing games. Some games had small animals as prizes. Goldfish, hermit crabs and anoles were the most common. You can still find these critters at midway games (and at boardwalk shops at the beach). Though it may seem fun to win one of these animals, are you prepared for the upkeep when you get home? Goldfish are in the carp family. They need more space than even a large goldfish bowl provides. A tengallon tank may be an OK starter tank for a couple smaller goldfish; however, they will need a 30 gallon or larger tank as they grow. Tanks require water changes, chemical monitoring, excellent filtration, cleaning, etc. Goldfish are considered an invasive species and can do considerable damage to the local environments if released. Flushing unwanted goldfish is almost always a death sentence. Hermit crabs are not as low maintenance as they appear. The small, plastic tank the hermit crab will come home in is too small and not properly
10
set up. A hermit crabs needs at least a 10 gallon tank. Environmental management is important. They require temperatures between 72 degrees to 80 degrees and humidity around 70 – 80%. This means an under tank heater, thermometer and hygrometer are needed to maintain and monitor the environment. Water for bathing and drinking, proper substrates, extra shells to move into, places to climb and space to move about are important. Hermit crabs are omnivorous scavengers that can live up to 20 years with proper care. Anoles are small lizards. Males can grow up to eight inches long. Wellcared for anoles in captivity have a lifespan up to about six years. Anoles need areas in their enclosure where they can bask in a full spectrum UVB light and move to shadier areas if needed. This helps them regulate their body temperature. Day time temperatures should be 77 degrees to 86 degrees and nighttime 65 degrees to 74 degrees. They need 60% to 70% humidity. Since they live in trees, they need a reptile enclosure that is tall and no smaller than 10 gallons for one anole, 20 gallons for two. They are insectivorous and eat live food. Are you willing to keep their food source

in your home? Along with your ability to care for one of these critters, what of their care while on the midway? I have seen anoles and hermit crabs in improper enclosures on colder days with no heat source. Goldfish should not be kept in tiny bowls waiting for balls to be tossed in or stuffed hundreds in a small tank. A poor start means a greater chance of failure for the person who wins the game and premature death for the animal. Though it may be tempting to try
and win one of the various critters seen at midway games, please don’t. These animals are not toys to be discarded when the novelty wears off. And sadly, there is a good chance it will. If you wish to add one of these animals to your home, go to a source other than a midway game where the care and management is often lacking. A good source will also teach you how to set up a habitat, feed and properly care for your pet. If you want to play a midway game, find one with stuffed animals instead.
PETS AT THE SHELTER
Pnicinyo is a 6-year-old chihuahua who has a big personality. He is bonded to his sister Jasmine who is a 5-year-old chihuahua. They must be adopted together. All three animals are at the Stafford County Animal Shelter, 540658-PETS.
Molly is a beautiful 5-year-old lab pit bull mix who thinks she is a lap dog. She is very friendly and enjoys human company. She does awesome with strangers and shows very well with small children. Molly is a 70 pound sweetheart.
