Ralph Northam, the

leader of his party, who expected to be campaigner-in-chief this fall, isn’t doing that much fundraising or campaigning. The yearbook scandal, where his page shows two men, one in a Klan costume and the other in black face, almost forced his resignation. Maybe it should have, but he has soldiered on and seems to be rebuilding some positive support. But, he’s still not all that welcomed at Democratic events. Will this scandal come to the forefront again? Will the absence of the state’s number one Democrat in the campaign for the General Assembly hurt the Democrats? Probably, at least a little, but that said, Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, and former Gov. Terry McAuliffe, have all stepped up to fill in. So, maybe the damage won’t be that bad. Finally, there is the redistricting. This was a court ordered response, in a case called Bethume vs. Virginia Board of Elections, that realigned some 26 districts because they had been drawn to limit the impact of minority voters. As the result several districts, from five to 10, are now competitive for the Democrats. Even Speaker of the House Kirk Cox’s district is on the list of new marginal seats. What do these variables add up to? At the moment, while they would argue for a Democratic win in both chambers this November, there are just enough uncertainties, including turnout, to make it difficult to give much of a forecast. Let’s just see who can knock on the most doors and make the most phone calls and then maybe it will be time to make a prediction. However, I knew leaving the classroom does not contribute to learning. Students miss information covered in class while they are out in the “activity hall.” And there will be some students who will learn that being “fidgety” is a free ticket out of the classroom. Also, knowing how students — especially in elementary, middle and high school — think, there will be students who will develop signals so buddies can get “fidgety” to get out of class and go to the “activity hall.” Now, I’m not suspicious or a classroom curmudgeon, I just know what students do. And, the more we allow them to escape from learning, the more we cater to the non-learner at the expense of the “non-fidgety” learner. GOLD

Increased summer demand drives up area home sales July proved a hot month for both the weather and the local housing market, according to analysis from the Fredericksburg Area Association of Realtors. “The July real estate market started with a bang and was hot all month,” said FAAR Board of Director Cindy LeBrun. Total sold dollar volume increased nearly 18%, coming in at approximately $208.7 million in July of 2018 and jumping to $245.6 million in July of this year. The increase in sold volume corresponds to a nearly 13% increase in units sold. In July of 2018, there were 639 units sold. In July of 2019, there were 80 more homes sold, coming in 719. Median price also increased nearly 5% year-over-year, going from $310,000 last July to $324,900 this July. “I was busier in July than last year with buyers and the majority were first-time buyers,” LeBrun said. “The interest rates were steady and with the inventory being low, we had to move quickly and there was still competition with several other offers. For my sellers, I analyzed the cur-

rent market conditions to identify the correct price range for their home to sell so we could take advantage of this sellers’ market.” Days on market, the time it takes from when a listing enters the market until it receives a ratified contract and is removed from active status on the multiple listing service, decreased 8% with houses averaging 57 days on the market in July of 2019 compared to 62 days in July of 2018. Active listings were up for the seventh month in a row, albeit by a very small margin. There was just one more house on the market at the end of the month then there was last year, representing 0.06% increase. There were 1,729 available properties on the market at the end of July. New listings posted a slight 2% decrease with 905 new homes coming on the market this July compared to 925 last year. Future settlement activity continues to post strong numbers with over 52% new properties under contract in July of 2019 compared to July of 2018.

I recognize some students have emotional needs that makes them “fidgety” and we have a system that is designed to help these students learn. Many schools have special needs programs, with teachers trained to teach students with emotional problems. I tip my hat to these teachers. Theirs is not an easy task but what they do addresses special learning needs using methods that address the core issues. They deal with the root cause of the student’s issue. Sending a student to the “activity hall” provides some relief to the student, class or teacher, but it doesn’t deal with the root cause and fidgety will remain day after day. Teachers should be capable of judging when they need to change the pace, provide a break, move to another topic or whatever adjustment needs to be employed to keep the students on the learning path. Granted, every teacher has a time when they are “losing” the attention of much of their class. As a professional, they know what to do because their goal is to teach and not send students out of the classroom. The bottom line is sending “fidgety” students to the activity hall is not dealing with the root cause of what

Oracle, and Patagonia, according to a news release. This latest achievement follows GCubed’s five-year anniversary and June 2019 first place award in the Small Business category as the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce Good Business of the Year. This is GCubed’s first time appearing on the Inc. 5000 list. makes them “fidgety.” I have experienced that more students are leaving high school with very short attention spans and a lack of focus and are “fidgety.” While I may be criticized, I believe one of the root causes is a lack of discipline at home and carries over into school. I don’t blame the teachers. They are restricted on how they apply discipline. I know they do their best, but the school system and the legal system make it difficult to apply “tough love.” I don’t believe in using any harsh treatments in education. But, when we send a child to school, it should be clear to the child that they are there to learn and learning sometimes is hard work. Learning to do anything well is hard work, whether it is music, mathematics or science, or athletics. Learning to deal with hard work takes concentration, focus and personal discipline. Many things in life are difficult and involve hard work and learning to deal with hard work is necessary in all aspects of life. Students must learn that when they get a job and they get “fidgety” on the job, there is no activity hall. Well, at least not up to now. Harvey Gold is a contributing writer at InsideNova. Stafford schools awarded $2.6M Head Start grant GREG HAMBRICK » BY ghambrick@insidenova.com

Stafford County Public Schools recently received $2,604,803 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for its Head Start program. The grant was announced by Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine as part of more than $17.4 million in grants awarded to five school divisions and community groups across the state, according to a news release. “The Head Start program plays an important role in helping schools and organizations across the Commonwealth get the resources they need to support young children,” the senators said in a joint statement. “We’re excited to announce this funding that promotes early childhood development.”

Warner and Kaine have both advocated for investments in early childhood education. Head Start programs promote school readiness for children under 5 years old from low-income families through health, education, family support and social services, then noted. According to the school division, Stafford Schools Head Start provides a developmental curriculum designed to provide literacy and language development, early mathematical skills, fine and gross motor physical development, begin scientific inquiry skills, and foster creativity in music, art, movement and dramatic play. The curriculum also provides direct instruction for development of social and emotional skills, nutrition, health and safety practices.

High expectations again for Colonial Forge football HUGH RIST » BY FOR INSIDENOVA

Following up on a season like they had last year is not an easy task for the Colonial Forge Eagles. After all, the Eagles ran the table during the regular season and advanced to the Class 6 Region final before falling to eventual state champion Manchester. The follow-up task would seem even harder when one realizes Forge lost several key two-way players, especially on its offensive and defensive lines, to graduation. But head coach John Brown says while it won’t be easy to do, given the level of competition the Eagles will face this season, he feels positive about the Eagles’ chances to attain its goal of an undefeated regular season. “All the teams in the Commonwealth District are well-coached and there’s a lot of talent there, so we certainly have our work cut out for us and the kids know that,” Brown said. “But I think we will be battle tested not only by our district schedule but by our out-of-district schedule.” The non-district schedule includes games against Hylton, Highland Springs, and Freedom, which are each perennial powers, so the schedule will “definitely prepare us to make some noise” in the playoffs. It also helps that Forge returns several talented skill players, including last year’s starting quarterback Madden Lowe, who transferred from Riverbend just before last season, but has had a full off-season of preparation this year. “Madden was sort of feeling his way along last year, and did a great job as a starter,” Brown said. “This year, he is more vocal and has taken better command of the offense.” While the Eagles figure to spread the ball all over the field and use numerous targets in their spread offense, one key receiving threat should be junior receiver Elijah Sarratt, who Brown said has gained “about 10 or 15 pounds” this off-season. The Eagles will move Sarratt mainly to the right side of the field, which may improve his statistics over last season as well as the chemistry between him and Lowe, but Brown said balance is a main feature of Forge’s offensive philosophy.

Brown raved about his corps of running backs, whom he said will all get a lot of touches, but one runner he expects to play a key role is senior running back Jamal Thomas. Meanwhile, the Eagles return a few key two-way linemen, which is important because Brown said the line play will have to be good “sooner rather than later” given the level of competition Colonial Forge faces. Among the key returning defensive players are Avery Johnson-Edmonds, a senior cornerback who should also contribute as a receiver on offense, and senior middle linebacker Josh Johnson. Brown mentioned that junior free safety Noel Innocent and junior two-way linemen Mason Rega and Chase Harley should also play significant roles in Forge’s success. “We have a talented, hard-working corps of kids, who know what’s expected and worked hard in the weight room and during practice,” Brown said. “They have developed a good rapport with each other. We talk a lot with seniors [every year] about legacy, the tradition of the program, so these kids want to prove they belong, too. I expect the offensive and defensive lines to develop quickly and that they will make their own identity at the end of the season.”

THEATRE REVIEW

Islands of delight dot ‘South Pacific’ One enchanted evening many years ago (70, to be exact) Rodgers and Hammerstein opened their musical “South Pacific” for its New Haven and Boston previews. The response was immediate and enthusiastic. Producer Mike Todd even advised them not to take it to New York. “It’s too damned good for them!” he remarked. But crowds on Broadway were already waving their money in front of the box office. And so the ambitious musical built from James Michener’s “Tales of the South Pacific” ran for 1,925 performances and racked up a record 10 Tony Awards before going on tour. And it’s still going. The 2008 Broadway revival won seven Tonys, including Best Revival. Professional and community theatres return to “South Pacific” to give audiences a reliable treat — not only do the songs wear well, but the story is remarkably current. Riverside Center’s production, running through Sept. 15, scores where it counts most in this tale of two nontraditional love affairs and war in the Pacific. Central to the conflict are one middle-aged Frenchman with the mysterious past, Emile de Becque, and his much younger love interest, the Arkansas-bred nurse, Ensign Nellie Forbush. Around them swirl issues of Japanese

Playing his love interest, Kate Marshall as Nellie is credible in her playful rendition of “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” and “A Wonderful Guy” with the other nurses. What struck me as random stage wandering at the beginning eventually became a stronger and more focused purpose by Act II. The chemistry “South Pacific” is playing at Riverside Center through Sept. 15. with Emile grows, but my PROVIDED favorite scene with her was the Thanksgiving follies spoof of ‘Honey invasion, high jinks among the sailors Bun” — she as the sailor and Luther Biland a separate doomed love affair with lis (Alan Hoffman) as the all-dolled-up further racial implications. Penny Maas choreographs and directs, Honey Bun. Riverside is fortunate in the discovery of Branch then comes Bloody Mary. I urge Riverside to use the talents of Fields, a bass opera singer, who brings not just a magnificent voice to such clas- Kadejah One at every possible chance, because star quality like this isn’t going sics as “Some Enchanted Evening” and to stay local. the raucous Polynesian opportunist who sees a sale wherever she sees a sailor. Anyone who knows “South Pacific” knows the haunting “Bali Ha’i,” and One’s performance is truly spellbinding. She also has a desperate motivation to secure a safe future for her young daughter, Liat (Sally Roehl), by marrying her off to an American officer. That doomed officer is Lt. Cable (Joey Birchler). Frank Foster’s scene design begins with a full stage sized map of the Solomon Islands and lifts to reveal de Becque’s graceful terrace which quickly shifts to a lounging area for sailors and nurses with hazy views of Bali Ha’i – to Bali Ha’i itself. Michael Jarett’s lighting is critical to the atmosphere but occasionally intrudes, as when the shadows of the actors are cast against what should be ocean air. Kyna Chilcot’s costumes are specific and well-conceived for all characters. Lushly accompanied by Angela Donadio’s live orchestra, Riverside’s “South Pacific” maintains the romance, social struggle and wartime urgency that made it one of the greatest hits from Rodgers and Hammerstein. Riverside Center for the Performing Arts is located at 95 Riverside Parkway, Fredericksburg. Maggie Lawrence is a member of the American Theatre Critics Association.
