Carolina Panthers pick North Stafford’s Slye REPORTS » STAFF info@insidenova.com
As the preseason wore on, the Carolina Panthers became more and more impressed with Joey Slye’s kicking. The North Stafford High School graduate converted seven of his eight field-goal attempts, including a 59-yarder in Thursday’s final preseason game against Pittsburgh. He also recorded two other kicks that went 50 yards and beyond. His only miss this season was against Pittsburgh when the Steelers blocked his 48-yard attempt. Once the Panthers decided to place Graham Gano on injured reserve, Slye became the team’s new kicker. Gano did not kick at all during the preseason as he continued to recover from a left leg injury that forced him to miss the final four games of the 2018 season. Gano, a 2017 Pro Bowler, had been Carolina’s kicker since joining the team midway through the 2012 season. In 2018, he went 14 for 16 and hit a 63-yard field goal. By being placed on injured reserve, Gano is ineligible to return this season since he was not listed on the team’s 53-man roster. Carolina signed Slye as a free agent Aug. 1. This was Slye’s fifth attempt at making an NFL roster. The Giants signed him in April before releasing him a week later.
He also had tryouts with the San Diego Chargers, the Cleveland Browns and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The memory of his brother AJ has motivated Slye to keep pushing himself. AJ died in 2014 from leukemia. JOEY SLYE “I want to be one of the top guys who’s ever played,” Slye told Panthers.com. “It’s not a mindset of I’m only doing it for accolades or getting to the top, but it’s that I promised my brother I’m going to give my best effort. I feel like I have the potential to be a top kicker in the league. “We’re on a mountain climbing, and once my career’s over, hopefully, I’ll be sitting on the top of the mountain happy with what I’ve accomplished.” Slye has always been known for his strong leg in finishing as Virginia Tech’s all-time leading scorer. He was a 2016 first-team, all-ACC selection by the coaches. As a senior, he scored 82 points, going 37 of 37 on point after touchdown attempts and 15 of 22 on field goals. Slye made 63 kickoffs that resulted in 53 touchbacks.

story repeats itself over and over again. Most are in school or in jobs and most are making a useful contribution to our country. Ah, but here is the kicker if it weren’t for the Deferred Action Program they would all be subject to possible deportation. Curiously, when compared to young people their own age, those who were born in the U.S. or are naturalized U.S. citizens, the DACA kids are far less likely to be involved in criminal activity or drug use. Indeed, most are in school or have jobs. I guess they know the bit about hard work and the American dream. They also know that as American as they may feel, in the eyes of the law they’re not Americans. This is a problem that needs a solution. The administration and various leading members of Congress have said they want it addressed in a larger, more comprehensive immigration bill. That’s nice, but that’s not going to happen. Not in this hyper-partisan environment. That’s why, for now, for this unique group, maybe a targeted bill, one that just deals with childhood arrivals, like the House bill, is better. These young people have been out in the cold too long. It’s time to bring them into the fold of the only country most have ever known. That’s the right thing to do and at the risk of sounding like the introduction to a Superman movie, it’s also the American way. Hurricane Dorian relief: State offers donor tips Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring is warning Virginia residents to be cautious when donating to relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Dorian. The storm devastated the Bahamas earlier this week as a Category 5 storm and continued to do damage and cause flooding as it moved up the coast through the week. Scammers often use natural disasters such as hurricanes to set up fake charities to pocket donations, Herring warned in a news release. “Watching Hurricane Dorian devastate the Bahamas has been heartbreaking and the East Coast is now bracing for the storm to hit,” he said. “It is the first instinct of Virginians to help victims, but folks must be smart and exercise caution when donating to hurricane focused charities. I am encouraging all Virginians to research a charity that is claiming to help hurricane victims thoroughly before donating any money.” As crowdfunding becomes more popular, it is especially important to research a crowdfunding page to make sure it is

legitimate before donating, Herring said. Prior to making any contributions, donors should take some common-sense precautions, including • Check the creator or page owner’s credentials on crowdfunding websites and try to confirm its authenticity. • Look for indicators of endorsement or legitimacy that the page is actually collecting donations for a particular victim or organization. • If you feel uneasy, contribute to a more established charity in the community. • Be wary of charities that spring up overnight in connection with a current event or natural disaster. • Only give to charities and fundraisers you can confirm are reliable and legitimate. • Beware of “copy-cat” names that sound like reputable charities. Some scammers use names that closely resemble those of respected, legitimate organizations. • Be especially cautious if you don’t initiate the contact with the charity. • Ask for written information about
the charity, including name, address, and telephone number. Legitimate organizations will give you materials about the charity’s mission, how your donation will be used, and proof that your contribution is tax-deductible. • Avoid cash donations. Make checks payable to the charitable organization and not to an individual collecting a donation. For security and tax record purposes, you may wish to pay by credit card. • If a charity is soliciting contributions in Virginia, verify its registration with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Office of Charitable and Regulatory Programs (“OCRP”) at (804) 786-1343, or by searching OCRP’s Charitable Organization Database online: http://cos.va-vdacs.com/cgi-bin/char_ search.cgi You can report charitable solicitation fraud to the Office of Charitable and Regulatory Programs (OCRP) and the Office of the Attorney General at: P.O. Tribal members and volunteers will handle landscaping and portray what it was like to live in Stafford County in 1608, when Capt. John Smith visited the village of Patawomeck, which was located at Marlboro Point. “We had very early contact with the English. We befriended the English,” Lightner said. “Had it not been for Patawomeck Indian Tribe trading with the English in 1609-1610 when they did not get their supply ships, Jamestown could have become another lost colony and Stafford County would not be what it is today. “
A cultural center and museum that tells the story of a local Native American tribe is on its way to Stafford County. The facility will be located on the 17acre Little Falls Farm next to Duff McDuff Green Memorial Park on Va. Route 3 said Millie Lightner, the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia’s administrative assistant. “Our ancestors can be traced back in Stafford County and King George counties to the early 1300s,” she said. “We are the first people of Stafford County. “ Stafford County owns the property and recently approved an initial 10-year lease agreement with the tribe. The lease can be renewed with up to four 10-year renewals. An outdoor village will be similar to what can be seen in Jamestown and will be open to the public. The tribe has traveled to local schools since 2013, sharing its history with students via a mobile village, Lightner said. Armed robbery suspects Store employee charged arrested in traffic stop with attempted rape Two suspects were arrested Aug. 30 in connection to a robbery at a Fas Mart convenience store, according to the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office. Patrick Castillo, 19, of Stafford, is charged with robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and conspiracy. He is being held without bond at Rappahannock Regional Jail. A 17-year-old girl was also taken into custody and held at the Juvenile Detention Center, SCSO spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo said. An employee said around 9 p.m. Castillo entered the store located at 2983 Jefferson Davis Highway. He allegedly pointed a shotgun at her face and threatened to shoot her unless she gave him money
from the register, Vicinanzo said. The employee gave him the money and he fled in a white Nissan Maxima heading north on U.S. Route 1. Deputies eventually located the PATRICK CASTILLO vehicle heading south on Route 1 and began following the vehicle, Vicinanzo said. The two suspects were taken into custody during a traffic stop and a shotgun similar to the one in the robbery was located in the vehicle, she said.

Stafford catches kayak fishing tournament
Stafford Tourism has attracted the Kayak Bass Fishing Trail Series Tournament, and “Kayak Bassin,” a nationally televised fishing show hosted by retired U.S. Navy officer Chad Hoover. “This is a direct impact from our tourism marketing efforts over the past couple of years and investment in local assets,” said John Holden, director of Economic Development and Tourism. Stafford will host the Kayak Bass Fishing Trail Series Tournament in 2020 and 2021. The event attracts between 150-250 anglers, according to a news release. County officials first started work on attracting the show two years ago, said Lisa Logan, program manager for Staf-
ford Tourism. As a result of continued dialogue, relationship building and the development of private and public access points, the county secured the tournament and program. Stafford will be highlighted on a national television show featured on the World Fishing Network and the Sportsman Channel. The “Kayak Bassin” episodes that feature Stafford will begin airing in 2020. These shows reach 45 million households, according to the news release. The county estimates the economic impact of this program is in excess of $116,000. In addition, the value of the advertising is in excess of $3 million.

Come Visit Soon We hope you’ll join us for the Sweet Rides Car Show, but you’re welcome to visit any time. Join us at Region’s 117 Tuesday - Sunday! We have drink and food specials and the fun is on tap. Or,
brings you comfort. Food is a primary reinforcer often used in animal work. Then there are secondary reinforcers. These are things that have no value unless paired with a primary reinforcer. Money is a great secondary reinforcer for us. With money we can buy food, drink, shelter, comfort, things that bring pleasure. If I have no outlets to any of these, say stranded in the desert with nothing around, money would not reinforce. You have no way to use it. Verbal praise is another secondary reinforcer. It has no meaning unless paired with something of meaning. So, when people say, “My dog should work because he loves me,” this may not be reinforcing to the dog. How can you test a reinforcer? See what has most value to your pet. One of my dogs was ball obsessed. Inside food was a good reinforcer. On walks, I could use food as well. In the backyard, however, if he saw his favorite ball, food was ignored. So, what would I use to reinforce behaviors at that point? The ball. Before my daughter enters the show ring with our dogs, she pulls out various foods. The one the dog prefers is the one that comes into the ring. When I go to client homes, I bring a variety of foods in my bag to see which ones work the best. I want dogs to want to work with me because I am associated with good stuff. Use reinforcers for training. They work, they increase bonding, they increase the effectiveness of our work. In future columns I will discuss positivereinforcement training and why it’s the way to go. Karen Peak is the developer of The Safe Kids/Safe Dogs Project and owner/operator of West Wind Dog Training in Prince William County.

A reinforcer is something that increases the likelihood of a behavior being repeated. Think of a reinforcer as a paycheck. What would you do if your boss informed you all paychecks would stop? How long would you stay? This week we are going to look at reinforcers and how they apply to our critters. I am a positive-reinforcement trainer. This means I add a desired reinforcer to help keep a behavior going. I can also remove the reinforcer to help stop undesired behaviors. For example, Sparky greets me by sitting, he gets a cookie or something that has meaning for him. This increases the likelihood of the behavior continuing. “Oh! I go up to lady and sit, I gets good stuff.” The more I practice and reinforce, the more Sparky will give the behavior. I am proactive with lessons. This means I teach what I need from the start instead of waiting for repeated mistakes and then addressing issues. The value of a reinforcer is determined by the recipient. I teach this as spinach vs ice cream sundaes. Would the average person rather have spinach or a sundae? Most people may say sundae. What if you were severely lactose intolerant, would a sundae work? No. Why? Think about what happens to the body and how the body could be affected. What if I had a child who feared roller coasters, yet I was trying to teach him to wait in line? Would riding that roller coaster reinforce the desired behavior? What if I have a dog who is not comfortable with touch? Would a pat reinforce a desired behavior? Primary reinforcers are things organisms are born needing including food, drink, pleasure, touch. Think of going to a pool on a summer day. You are hot and miserable. The pool cools you and

Be sure you get accurate information. Friends may not be completely honest with you. Children may be less than honest with you. You can come into money that you don’t necessarily work for.
Do not let the reactions of others get you going. New projects may lead you into a dead end. Update and review your personal investments. You will enjoy socializing and unusual forms of entertainment.
TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Professionalism will be of utmost importance. Lack of funds may add stress to your already uncertain situation. Don’t blow situations out of proportion or you could find that others will misinterpret what really happened. Overexertion and negligence will be your worst enemies. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Too much talk might lead to hassles. Tell them to get out of the mess they are in and then you’ll consider getting together with them. You can make life easier for an older member of your family. Put your efforts into your work or money making ventures rather than your emotional life. CANCER (June 22-July 22)
Dig deep to find out how costly a new venture will be before you sign on the dotted line. Do something constructive outside. Your mate may not have been honest with you. Think twice before you speak. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Concentrate on home improvement. Small de tails will make a difference. Your temper could be short if someone criticizes your efforts. Your mate will appreciate your honesty. Romantic encounters will develop through colleagues. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Make arrangements to spend quality time together. You need to spend time with friends and family. Your involvement in groups will be favorable for meeting new and exciting individuals. Don’t overspend on luxury items.

You can write beautiful love letters this week. Children may be less than honest with you. Rest and relaxation may be required; minor health problems will prevail if you don’t watch your diet. Real estate investments will be profitable. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) Don’t overreact to someone’s advances. Travel is evident, but be cautious while in transit. Difficulties relating to children will be stressful. Organize social events or family gatherings. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) You can come into money; however, perhaps not under the best circumstances. You might have a problem juggling your time. Do not let the reactions of others get you going. Spend some time with the one you love. Pleasure trips will be satisfying. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Lovers may prove unworthy of your affection. This is not the best day to visit relatives who get on your nerves. Don’t exaggerate. Group endeavors will provide you with entertainment. WWW.ASTROLOGY-ONLINE.COM
