Along for the Ride The season’s big events in and around Stafford GREG HAMBRICK » BY ghambrick@insidenova.com

Summer is in its final days, depleted of its holidays, beach weather and revelry. Trees have started to dull and children are back behind their desks — sure signs we’re far from the peak of vacation time. In general, fall offers a cozy alternative to the expanse of summer. We’re starting to huddle closer together in coffee shops and on hayrides. We’re replacing tank tops with light layers. Most importantly, we’ve replaced road trips with weekends packed with local events. The arts scene surges back to life with theatre performances and special events. Fall festivals offer chances to enjoy time with our neighbors. Yes, and maybe talk a little about our fun summer. But there’s new memories to be made this season. Here’s a look at some of the top events across the region. You can see much more and share your own happenings at InsideNoVa.com/calender.

for isn’t all that restrictive. Their focus is primarily on the at-risk potential shooter. They are not trying to gut the Second Amendment. For instance, the proposals advocated by Sen. Scott Surovell, a Democratic representing parts of Stafford, Prince William and Fairfax, are decidedly tame. Most rational people would call them moderate. He wants limitations on the size of magazines and, after the shooting of former Rep. Gabby Giffords, co-sponsored a bill for a 15-round maximum. He supports implementing comprehensive “universal” background checks and he is also a chief co-sponsor of a red flag law for Virginia that would allow a judge to take away a person’s guns if the court deems the individual is a danger to themselves or others. Of course, at the moment, the GOP majority is standing firm against any change to our existing gun laws. Their mantra, a diversionary tactic right out of the NRA playbook, is to say that we’re dealing with a mental health issue and not a gun issue. That’s disingenuous to the extreme. The problem remains that we allow people who have no business owning powerful weapons to have them. People are dying in seemingly unending mass shootings, schools have active shooter drills, and police are constantly on edge not knowing where the next crisis will occur. It’s a problem that’s reached crisis proportions and, yes, contrary to the opinions of the NRA, it is the government’s role to do something about this. If the federal government won’t act, then Virginia and other states must. David Kerr, a former member of the Stafford School Board, is an instructor in political science at VCU. important. If a pony can ride in the cabin why can’t a snake, or a bear or chimp or gorilla or tiger or any animal a person considers a “service animal” be allowed to fly seated among the other passengers. And, where do the airlines draw the line? It doesn’t look like it will be easy for the airlines since the Department of Transportation recently passed new guidelines that will require humans to share their flights with animals. The U.S. Department of Transportation announced that passengers would be able to take animals on board American aircrafts as long as they are registered as service or emotional support animals. And airlines could face fines if they separate owners from their animals. But airlines will still be able to decide whether other service animals are allowed onboard on a “case-by-case basis.” In comparison, the UK laws are more strict where only a few airlines allow support dogs on flights. It seems the real issue is the definition of “service animal” because, while it may sound strange, there have been other cases where people have claimed a turkey, pig, monkey, duck and kangaroo were service animals. We all would agree that any disabled person should feel comfortable and have the help they need. But I would hope that common sense would prevail and just

because the animal’s owner considers the animal to be their “service animal” that animal should not endanger or add discomfort or anxiety to others. Isn’t it important that the others in a confined space know that they will share a closed environment with some type of animal: What if someone has an allergy to fur or feathers of animals? Don’t they have rights? Should they be notified when they buy their ticket? Should they be upgraded to first class? Another concern is that any precedent set for “service animals” on airlines could lead to any animal called a “service animal” being allowed everywhere. I recently encountered someone who had a pet python with them that comforts them in a local business that has a constant flow of customers. Others in the store were not comforted. Some were frightened. What about bringing “service animals” on the VRE, Fredericksburg buses or cruise ships, or in schools. The lack of a commonsense definition of a “service animal” brings us closer to a lot of potential mischief. Worse, it can lead us to a form of societal disorder where anyone can do what they want as long as they say they need it. Harvey Gold is a contributing writer at InsideNova. Fredericksburg Baseball announces leadership team GREG HAMBRICK » BY ghambrick@insidenova.com

Fredericksburg Baseball is planning to open its new stadium in Fredericksburg in April, and recently announced new staff for key leadership positions. Team owners expect to more than double the full-time staff prior to the start of the 2020 season, according to a news release. Fredericksburg Baseball is set to begin play in 2020 at a new, $35 million stadium at Celebrate Virginia South on Carl D. Silver Parkway near the Fredericksburg Expo & Convention Center. Nick Hall will fill the new position of executive vice president and general manager. He previously served as the director

of partnerships with the Amarillo Sod Poodles, who opened their new stadium in Amarillo, Texas, in April 2019. “He brings tremendous experience, excitement, and ideas from working with Amarillo during their inaugural season,” the news release noted. Hall was also general manager of the Jackson Generals in Tennessee from 2016 to 2018. “Nick’s knowledge of all facets of minor league baseball and his experience in Amarillo in opening their new ballpark will be invaluable to help us set the highest standards for our fans in Fredericksburg,” said Fredericksburg Baseball President Lani Silber Weiss. Hall, a Tennessee native, is excited

Tourism grows in Stafford Tourists spent $147.3 million in Stafford County in 2018, up from $140.8 million the previous year and nearly $23.6 million increase compared to 2014, according to an economic impact report released Tuesday by the Virginia Tourism Corp. Statewide, tourism-related spending rose by 4.4% in Virginia last year, increasing from $24.7 billion in 2017 to $25.8 billion in 2018. Tourism accounted for 1,456 jobs

and direct payroll of $30.5 million to industry workers in Stafford County last year. Tourism also accounted for $4.3 million in local tax receipts and $6.1 million in state tax receipts. “Virginia’s tourism industry had a banner year in 2018, hitting new records and making important impacts on our communities across the commonwealth,” Virginia Tourism president and CEO Rita McClenny said.

about how much the community has gotten behind the team. “You can’t walk through Fredericksburg and talk about the team without people showing overwhelming support. It’s something that I haven’t seen before and something that we are looking forward to as we go through the process of creating this brand and this stadium.” Fredericksburg Baseball announced the promotion of its two senior executives from the prior operation in Woodbridge. Bryan Holland has been with the team since 2012 serving in numerous roles and will now be vice president of sales. He’ll oversee all ticket, hospitality and corporate sales and run an expanded staff of sales executives.

Aaron Johnson has been promoted to vice president of operations. He has been with the franchise since 2012 and specialized in running the team’s food services and stadium operations. He will play a key role for non-game day events including events held by the city, including the Celebrate Virginia concert series and other community and corporate events. Fredericksburg Baseball is in the process of moving its corporate and sales offices to Fredericksburg, and expects to have its full staff working from the team’s offices and store at 601 Caroline St. by Sept. 16. Mountain View quarterback Edwin Ware accounted for 291 yards and four touchdowns in Mountain View’s win over Patriot Sept. 6. FILE PHOTO

Mountain View routs Patriot HUGH RIST » BY For InsideNoVa

As if the defensive pressure of its senior secondary standouts James Snead and Adin Huntington was not enough, the host Mountain View Wildcats decided to use their offense to Ware the Patriot Pioneers out Sept. 6 in a non-conference football game. Senior quarterback Edwin Ware accounted for 291 all-purpose yards, threw for three touchdowns, and ran for another and the Wildcats’ defense notched two sacks and six tackles for loss en route to a 37-6 victory. Perhaps the most definitive statement by the Wildcats’ defense was the way it contained Patriot’s running game, particularly that of its transfer running back Tim Baldwin, who carried just 11 times for 48 yards, a week after running for three touchdowns in Patriot’s (1-1) season opening victory. Baldwin, who has 15 Division 1 offers, was strongly contained, except for a 30yard run at the beginning of the second quarter. Overall, Mountain View (2-0) held the Pioneers to just 98 rushing yards and pressured quarterback Cody Rogers into completing just eight of 17 passes for 80 yards. “That [the defensive front] is the strength of our team and they’ve done a good job every time out,” Mountain View coach Lou Sorrentino said. “We [the coaches] told them this is not an ordinary running back in there and I thought they did a good job.” Another person who did a good job was Ware, the Wildcats’ athletic quarterback, who threw for 144 yards and ran for 147. One of the key plays happened late in the second quarter with the Wildcats holding a 16-6 lead. Shortly after Patriot called a time out with just more than a minute left in the half, Ware ran 71 yards, moving the ball from the Mountain View 8 to the Patriot 21. Moments later, Ware found Randy Thomas over the middle for a 21-yard touchdown that gave the Wildcats a 23-6

lead with 10.4 seconds left in the first half. “He’s pretty dynamic,” Sorrentino said. “Honestly, I was just hoping not to punt it from our end zone there and then he busts a run, then throws that great ball for us. That was really [a huge momentum swing].” Sorrentino lauded the play of Huntington and Snead in particular, citing the duo’s work ethic as important to the team’s overall mindset. “They’ve set the tone all off-season in the weight room. When you shut down a good running team like that, you’ve always got a shot,” Sorrentino said. “We did some good things, including taking advantage of two turnovers, so you have to give the defense credit.” As Sorrentino said, Patriot’s two turnovers proved costly. One eventually led to a 2-yard scoring run by Ware that made the score 30-6, while the second one led to a 2-yard scoring run by Ike Daniels that accounted for the final margin. Mountain View opened the scoring with a 51-yard TD pass from Ware to Bishop Jones-Fowler. It became 13-0 when Amari Walker hauled in a 10-yard scoring pass. John Shaner booted a 36yard field goal with 2:53 left in the first half to make it 16-0. Patriot’s lone offensive highlight happened on the ensuing drive when Rogers carried five times during a 7-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 2-yard scoring run by Rogers. The touchdown was set up by consecutive long runs of 37 and 15 yards by Rogers. FOOTBALL
