he Stafford County Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to allocate $2.85 million in unspent fiscal 2015 money toward the Brooke Road Safety Improvement

Project. Supervisors voted 6-1, with Supervisor Meg Bohmke, R-Falmouth, casting the dissenting vote. The money represents a surplus originally intended for the county school system, and Bohmke said the money should stay with the schools. Supervisor Laura Sellers, R-Garrisonville, disagreed, noting that the school system’s front office essentially stole money from Stafford’s teachers in hiding money. In two instances, Stafford County Public Schools funds were mismanaged, and millions of dollars in surplus money was discovered. Last year, more than $9 million in surplus funds was found. The school system returned the money to the county, but asked that the county appropriate it back to the schools. At the end of this budget year, $7 million in surplus funds was found, but the school system quickly allocated some of the money toward a stipend and other projects not initially identified as priorities. Supervisor Wendy Maurer, R-Rock Hill, said that it was an attempt to “paint us into a corner.” Supervisor Jack Cavalier, R-GriffisWidewater, said that the money actually cannot go back to the ROAD schools, even though it was PAGE 13 originally intended to go
