Dog Krazy may be owned by Nancy and Chris Guinn, but it is really Piglet’s business. “Dog Krazy was started in 2006 because of the love I have for a bull dog,” Nancy said. “Her name was Piglet.” Piglet was Nancy’s “I can’t have a baby” pup. For the first four months of Piglet’s life, she came to work with Nancy and all was well. That is, until the day Nancy was told that Piglet was getting too big and would no longer be able to go to work with her. That same day, Nancy quit her job. With Piglet by her side, the pair went to a dog store in Fredericksburg. She struck up a conversation with the store’s owner, who promised to help Nancy get started in the business if she’d do one thing: Be a proponent of the adopt, don’t shop, philosophy which encourages those looking for a pet to find their four-legged kids at animal shelters or rescues. Nancy’s response was quick and immediate – an unequivocal yes. “Before I knew it, I found a location, signed the lease and maxed out my credit cards,” she said. “I had opened my first store.” Three months later, she met her future husband and business partner, Chris. “We ended up having to downsize the first store,” she explained. “It was a little too big and we ended up getting in way over our heads.” Thanks to an understanding landlord, they relocated the store to a smaller place next door. And they’ve been growing ever since. Dog Krazy opened its fifth location in Stafford at 315 Garrisonville Road in 2017 and recently expanded into the space next door. “Here in this store, we’ve been so busy grooming,” Nancy said. “All the grooming locations in town have closed.” A self-service dog wash has recently been added to the location. For $10, you can use the facility’s walk-in tubs to bath your dog yourself.

That’s not the only things that keeps customers coming in. Lining Dog Krazy’s shelves are a wide assortment of all natural pet foods and toys. Lots of toys. “Seventy percent of our customers come in because they don’t know anything about dog food and they want to learn,” said Nancy. The remaining 30 percent of the stores customers come in seeking nutritional support to prolong their pets life. “They want to know if we have any options that will help their dog live longer,” explained Nancy. Working hand-in-hand with the owner’s veterinarian, Nancy, who is a pet nutritionist, devises meal plans tailored to each pet’s specific needs. “Give your dog fresh vegetables, give your dog fresh meat,” she urged. “It’s really good for them.” And don’t think that because Dog Krazy specializes in natural foods and treats for both dogs and cats that they don’t love veterinarians. Nancy said she’s received messages from customers saying their dog is sick or has been injured. Her response is always the same: Get to the vet. Now. “We’re known for nutrition and for giving the best advice to the dog that’s in front of us,” added Chris. The company’s focus this year in on training, he continued. “We’re making sure everyone, if you interact with a customer, you have to be knowledgeable about what’s best for the dog in front of you,” he said. Chris and Nancy also have one philosophy when it comes to what products you can find in their stores. “If it goes home with a customer, we want to make sure it would go home with us,” he said. Dog Krazy in Stafford is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 540-699-2234 or email shopdogkrazy@ gmail.com. “We’re here for your pets,” added Nancy. “We want only the best for your pets. That’s what we’re all about.”

The Democrats was modest. The Democrats worked also took all three statewide races. A one-time thing? Maybe, but in 2018, to get nominees for every seat, their fundraising was adequate, but it could in what was arguably a more national have been better. This year, in something race, the Democrats picked up an unprecedented three seats in the U.S. House of a first, the Democrats, at least as of representing Virginia and easily reelected this moment, are raising more campaign money for House of Delegates than the Sen. Tim Kaine. It was their best mid-

Republican. This almost never happens. Some Republican donors may not have made their contributions yet, while others, sensing a change in the political tides, may be saving their cash for another campaign. Ah, but in politics, it’s never good to count your “red” or “blue” waves until they wash ashore. The outcome, while looking good for the Democrats, includes a few variables that could dampen the prospects of victory. First, this is an off-year election and by “off ” I really mean off. It’s an odd year and that means it’s out of sync with the national election calendar. Virginia is one of the few states that does this and on top of that there is no statewide race to entice voters to the polls. So, turnout is likely to be low. This means, no surprise, each side has to get out their vote and energize independents. Some GOP candidates are embracing their party identity, hoping to bring the base of Republican faithful to the polls. Others in more progressive areas are out for Democratic crossovers and independents. So, they’re not sounding quite so Republican. As for the Democrats, they expect a strong anti-Trump vote, and by focusing on healthcare, schools and roads, they are actively wooing independent support and counting on some Republican crossovers. There are more of the latter than most in the GOP care to admit. So, speaking of waves and carrying this water based analogy a bit further, if I were a Republican, I would be checking to make sure my political flood insurance policy is up-to-date. ABC stores see sales climb in 2018 PEDRO CORONADO » BY Capital News Service

Raise a toast to the top-selling liquor store in Stafford County in 2018. The ABC outlet at 356 Garrisonville Road registered more than $4.51 million in gross sales. That’s the busiest store in Stafford, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania. During the 2018 fiscal year, the 370 stores operated by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority rang up sales of more than $978 million, according to figures released last month. The store at 2757 Jefferson Davis Highway reported $3.67 million in sales, the location at 560 Celebrate Virginia Parkway had $2.61 million in sales, and the newest location at 43 Town and Country Drive off Garrisonville Road had $2.28 million in sales. The Virginia ABC has four main sources of revenue: state-imposed taxes on beer and wine sales, sales of distilled spirits at the agency’s stores, violation penalties and license fees. After each fiscal year, the commission releases a report on its sales and other activities. During the 2019 fiscal year, which ended June 30, ABC brought in more than $1 billion. Agency officials announced in August that they had another record-breaking milestone as revenues increased about $72 million over the

previous year. For 2019, the commission had about $197 million in store profits, $223 million in retail taxes and $80 million in wine and beer taxes. As a result, it pumped almost $500 million into the state government’s general fund, which supports education, health, transportation, public safety and other services. The top five brands purchased in Virginia ABC stores last year remained Tito’s Handmade (domestic vodka), Hennessy VS (cognac), Jack Daniel’s 7 Black (Tennessee whiskey), Jim Beam (straight bourbon), and Fireball Cinnamon (imported cordial). Revenues have risen as ABC amped up its marketing and merchandising. “ABC’s revenue growth is primarily the result of adding stores around the state to improve customer convenience, a robust series of targeted seasonal promotional campaigns and changing consumer trends,” Travis Hill, the commission’s chief executive officer, said in announcing the 2019 revenue numbers. “We opened seven new stores in the last fiscal year, which provided greater accessibility for customers and increased sales. Customers aren’t necessarily drinking more; they’re buying more premium products that have a higher per bottle price tag. Additionally, they’re choosing distilled spirits over other products.”

Four Democrats lead Trump in early 2020 survey in Virginia Four Democrats in the race for the party’s nomination in 2020 hold a double-digit lead over President Donald Trump in Virginia, according to a new University of Mary Washington statewide survey. The survey was conducted Sept. 3-15 for UMW by Research America Inc., before the Sept. 24 announcement by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that Congress would consider impeachment charges against President Trump, according to a news release. The results found former Vice President Joe Biden had a 55% to 37% mar-

gin over Trump among all respondents. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren had a 53% to 38% margin over Trump, as did Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. California Sen. Kamala Harris, the fourth Democratic candidate considered in the Virginia survey, had a 50% to 38% margin over the president. The remaining respondents were uncertain or declined to express a favorite in those head-to-head match-ups. Registered voters in the survey expressed similar preferences. Among the 882 registered voters in the survey, all four candidates retained their double-

digit advantages over Trump, including Biden (55% to 38%), Warren and Sanders (both 52% to 39%) and Harris (50% to 39%). The four Democratic candidates compared to Trump in the Mary Washington survey were among the top candidates as measured in national surveys conducted in recent months. “The latest Mary Washington survey demonstrates that Donald Trump faces an uphill battle in Virginia next year against a range of possible challengers,” said Stephen J. Farnsworth, professor of political science at the University of Mary Washington and director of its Center for Leadership and Media Studies. “While a lot can change in 14 months, these are not encouraging results for Trump and other Republicans who might be on the ballot with him next year.” In the Biden-Trump match-up, the

president faces a significant gender gap in Virginia, as women said they favored Biden by a 60-31% margin, while men split for Biden by a 49-43% margin. Whites split almost evenly between Biden and Trump, while African Americans favored Biden by an 84-10% margin and Latino Americans favored him by a 58-32% margin, with the rest undecided. Biden had a huge advantage over Trump in Northern Virginia, where the former vice president enjoys a 69% to 26% margin. “Negative reactions in Virginia to the Trump presidency helped propel Democratic candidates to major victories in the 2017 House of Delegates and the 2018 Congressional elections,” Farnsworth said. “The results in the survey suggest that at this point 2020 is looking to be yet another tough year for the GOP in the Old Dominion.”

Deputies lead regional drone workshop Members of the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office lead a regional workshop on public safety uses for drones last week. “Our drone program has been extremely successful in a number of cases from locating missing individuals to helping us track down suspects on the run to recreating accident scenes, said Sheriff David Decatur. “We are honored when others take notice of our efforts and always welcome opportunities to share our knowledge and lessons learned with other organizations. Stafford’s team was asked by officials from the Virginia Department of Public Safety and Homeland Security to feature its drone cases and capabilities, according to a news release. Stafford’s team conducted field demonstrations as part of the workshop. Speak-

ers at the workshop included Assistant Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Shawn Talmadge and Tracy Tynan, director of Virginia’s Unmanned Systems Center, as well as Charles Werner, a national expert and director of the nonprofit public safety program DroneResponders. When the SCSO started the drone program in 2017, it became the first law enforcement agency in Virginia to use drones solely for law enforcement purposes. Since then, Capt. Ben Worcester, who heads the office’s drone program, has traveled around the country talking about how it is used in Stafford. Besides locating missing persons and finding criminals, drones can assist in crime scene documentation. They can also capture envi-

ronmental disasters, help with traffic assessments or aid people in distress such as by dropping a life preserver or a tow line to them if they are struggling in a body of water. Recently, the Sheriff ’s Office Traffic Safety Unit was recognized by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police for its use of drones for reconstructing crash scenes. Traditionally, crash reconstruction can take hours, and use of drones significantly reduces that time. The association recognized the unit’s efforts with the 2019 Virginia Law Enforcement Challenge Award in the technology category. “Embracing technology is critical to the success of any law enforcement agency, Decatur said. “Leveraging these advanced tools helps us do a better job of protecting our citizens and keeping our community safe.

A woman and a 2-year-old girl were also in the car. Morales told a deputy that he confused the railroad tracks with an actual road,

Stafford schools receive full accreditation by state

Stafford County Public Schools again earned full accreditation for the 2019-20 school year, as they have since since 2015. According to the Virginia Department of Education State Accreditation Report, all 31 schools in Stafford County earned the highest accreditation rating of “Fully Accredited” with eight schools reaching Level 1 accreditation ratings for the school year. Fully accredited is the highest accreditation rating a school and division can receive, according to a news release. Public schools in Virginia are designated with annual accreditation ratings by the state, which are based on Standards of Learning test scores from the previous school year. The tests are administered in English Reading, English Writing, History, Mathematics and Science. SOL test results from Stafford County Public Schools indicate several achievements:

• SCPS is above the state average in Reading, Math, and Science overall. • SCPS is at or above the state average for Math, Science, and History for students with disabilities. • Economically disadvantaged students met or exceeded the state average in Reading, History, Mathematics, and Science. • African American students exceeded the state average in all five areas. • All five high schools exceeded the annual target for the Federal Graduation Indicator and the state Graduation and Completion Index. “SCPS has a strong commitment to equity and high expectations for all students. We expect to see continued growth in the future,” said SCPS Superintendent Dr. Scott Kizner. The community may view detailed information regarding Stafford Schools’ accomplishments at www.doe.virginia. gov.

I still work, too. I like to think of my cancer not as a death sentence – but as a chronic condition.” Breast cancer patient Lura has an even longer history of living with cancer. “Mine started in 1997, with stage one. I had a lumpectomy, and then, in 2005, I developed a lump in my other breast, and had chemo, radiation and pills. In 2012, it came back again in my breast, and I had a double mastectomy. That went really well – they did reconstruction, too. But in 2014, I had a spot on my chest that was right in the middle, where the radiation

Tell them what’s going on with side effects, too, because there’s a lot they can do. At first, I didn’t say much – but now, I write down those things going on at home. With so much going on I don’t remember questions, so write them down.” Find the right people, and you know you’ll get the answers.

Let’s Talk About Mammograms LOCAL MEDICAL CENTERS ENGAGE, SUPPORT COMMUNITY DURING BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated in a number of ways. Many companies and organizations hold fundraisers for cancer research. Local communities recognize current patients and survivors and remember those lost to the disease. Medical centers often host education and awareness events that invite local women to learn about breast health and receive their annual mammogram screenings. Maria E. Pace, MD, a breast-imaging specialist with Novant Health UVA Health System UVA Breast Care Center, explains the importance of mammogram screenings. “As our knowledge of breast cancer and its causes, risk factors and treatments has expanded, so has our commitment to early detection,” said Dr. Pace. “All normal risk women beginning at age 40 should include mammograms in their routine health screenings.” According to The Centers for Dis-

ease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, regardless of race or ethnicity, with nearly 250,000 cases diagnosed through mammograms in 2016. Novant Health UVA Health System offers screening and diagnostic mammograms, as well as 3D mammography, at both Prince William and Haymarket Medical Centers. 3D mammography is a relatively new advancement that supports early detection of breast cancer. 3D mammography allows radiologists to image a woman’s breast tissue layer by layer. An X-ray arm sweeps over the patient and captures images one-millimeter at a time, which allows doctors to see fine details more clearly once it’s all pieced together. This helps lead to earlier detection, better visualization and fewer callbacks. “Mammograms are very important, especially as women get older,” said Dr. Pace. “The earlier we are able to detect abnormalities, the higher the

likelihood of the patient beating the disease. The hope is, if we catch cancerous tissue early enough, treatment will be quicker and have minimal effects on a woman’s livelihood.” “Just as important as having your mammogram done in the first place, however, is having it evaluated by a trained professional,” said Dr. Pace. “All mammograms done through Novant Health UVA Health System are read by UVA fellowship-trained breast radiologists.” These radiologists have the proper training to detect small cancers in very early stages, which means they are more likely to get treated before they are able to spread or metasticize to another part of the body. Novant Health UVA Health System offers another unique service – the mobile mammography unit. This service aims to ensure all women have access to high-quality breast health services, regardless of ability to travel to a full-service imaging center, by bringing mammography machines to women where they live, work and

more. “We take our commitment to women’s health services and awareness very seriously,” said Stephen Smith, MD, president and COO of Prince William and Haymarket Medical Centers. “Our mobile mammography unit has been a game-changer for women who previously didn’t have the means to get to an imaging center. We try to make to these important screenings easy and accessible for all.” For more information about Novant Health UVA Health System mammography screenings or to schedule one, visit nhuvaimaging.com/gopink/.

It’s not just the 3D mammogram that saves lives, but the doctor who reads it. Breast cancer screenings with the latest technology and UVA fellowship-trained breast radiologists Novant Health UVA Health System provides 3D breast cancer screening for improved accuracy and earlier detection. And because who reads your mammogram is as important as having it done, our facilities feature UVA fellowship-trained breast radiologists. Using this advanced technology, they can quickly detect small instances of breast cancer in tissue, or rule it out with greater confidence. With 3D mammography and an expert team, we’re bringing the best of health to you in a powerful new way.

Unbeaten Mountain View team dominates on both sides of the ball HUGH RIST Âť BY FOR INSIDENOVA

The fact that the Mountain View Wildcats are off to a 5-0 start halfway through their season was not really a surprise given the talent Coach Lou Sorrentino has to work with, but the manner in which they have won possibly caused a few raised eyebrows, and may be cause for a few sleepless nights going forward for the opponents they have yet to play. Overall, the defense, led by veteran defensive stalwarts such as Adin Huntington, Ben Boateng, and Alex Kemp, has been stellar, yielding just 33 points in the five games (6.6 average), while preventing several of the other teams’ key offensive cogs from doing a lot of damage. Sorrentino said that is basically standard operating procedure. “When you are facing high powered offenses, you benefit from having a good offensive line with veterans who know how to communicate, Sorrentino said. “When you can force the other teams to go to their second, third, or fourth option, you obviously have a chance to do good things and we’ve done that. It’s been exciting so far. The Wildcats have limited four of their five opponents so far to one touchdown or fewer and no opponent so far has scored

more than 15 points in a game. The excitement has not been limited to defense, however, as a high-powered offense, averaging 40 points per game, has unleashed a balanced attack, led by quarterback Edwin Ware, who is equally adept at throwing and running, but also has good confidence to lead the team down the field. During the Wildcats’ 37-6 victory over

Patriot a couple weeks ago, Ware scored four touchdowns, throwing for three, while running for one. Meanwhile, he has also taken the short passes where he has had them. “Against Riverbend, we had some sustained drives where we weren’t able to get the big plays, but we were able to be efficient with the pass [Ware was 10 for 11], so that will be good when we face some

of the better offenses we have ahead, Sorrentino said. Another advantage of Mountain View’s talent has been its ability to simulate what other teams can do in practice, but that is more a nod to the Wildcats’ philosophy of “22 guys, Sorrentino said. “Not many teams use 11 players on offense and 11 different players on defense, Sorrentino said. “Riverbend has gotten much better, but late in the game, I don’t think they could keep up with a team that has our depth. Another advantage of the depth is special teams play. Sorrentino has also been very pleased with Mountain View’s kickers. There are three kickers, Alex Solorzano (punts and extra points), Patrick Carroll (kickoffs) and John Shaner (situational kicks). “We are fortunate because there hasn’t really been any difficult feelings between them. Solorzano has punted well and Carroll has consistently pinned the opponent inside the 20, so we feel really good about the start. Sorrentino was quick to point out, though, that with North Stafford, Colonial Forge, and Massaponax on the schedule the next three weeks, the Wildcats face a genuine challenge. “It will be great to see how we measure up, Sorrentino said.

CRITTER CORNER | KAREN PEAK

Not as seen on TV

Another “miraculous” television dog training show has hit the networks. Already I have seen concerning actions by the trainer. One clip showed a dog being “desensitized” while he was fighting and struggling against a lead. This is not desensitizing; it is emotional torture. This action showed a clear lack of behavioral understanding by the budding celebrity trainer. Dog training TV shows and many videos online are not the best source of information for owners. Having a show does not an expert make. Training for celebrities does not an expert make. One trainer consistently shows dogs being flooded with stimuli until they stop reacting. Underlying stress and anxiety are not addressed — only the outward behaviors. To make matters worse, the visible behaviors are handled in ways that make things worse as time goes on. Just because the dog stops reacting doesn’t mean he is better. Another trainer uses cessation of pain to get certain behaviors: as soon as the dog listens, the discomfort is stopped. Both assume canine calming and stress signals are defiance. Another trainer taught dogs to walk closely by walking towards light poles. If the dog did not walk near the human, they were forced into the pole. Yet another training group had episodes where they taught

puppies to work by using prong collars. Even if the trainer or behaviorist is truly top notch, ethical and highly knowledgeable, there may be a false sense of the time needed to help resolve a situation. So much work is edited out. That problem you see resolved in a single episode may have taken weeks or months of work and management. A police officer once told me: “It can take months to get enough evidence just to get to court; not the short time implied by Law and Order.” The same holds true for dog training. Are the trainers taking health into consideration? Behaviors may be reactions to the dog being in pain or not feeling well. One of my senior dogs developed behavioral issues: inappropriate urinating after being reliably house-trained for years and an increasing aggressive response to things. I was concerned about a UTI, not just a decision not to urinate outside. Well, turned out he had a UTI and the beginning of bladder cancer. Very rarely have I ever seen a TV trainer recommend a veterinarian to rule out medical causes. I have never seen a TV trainer recommend anxiety reducing medication, either. Again, this shows a lack of knowledge. Stress and anxiety create chemical changes in the body. These changes may require medication along

with careful behavioral work. I have never seen a TV trainer refer a client to a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. Finally, when you rely on TV training or videos to fix your problems, you are missing a big part of animal work: a professional with solid skills to give feedback based on first-hand observation. I know many exceptional behaviorists with extensive videos, books, blogs, etc. I often use them along with my own videos and blogs to supplement client notes. A good, positively-based trainer who can

observe, give feedback and guide you is important. You will never get that with TV, books or videos alone. To find a good, positively-based trainer, seek one who is a member of the Pet Professional Guild or the International Association of Animal Behavioral Consultants. There is no replacement for a knowledgeable trainer. Karen Peak is the developer of The Safe Kids/Safe Dogs Project and owner/operator of West Wind Dog Training in Prince William County.
