Stafford man sought in assault, shots fired Authorities are searching for a Stafford County man in connection with an assault and shots fired Monday morning in Bealeton. Deputies were called to a farm in the 5500 block of Liberty Road at 9:18 a.m. Monday for a reported assault involving a man with a gun. Due to the nature of the report several nearby schools – Liberty High School, Grace Miller Elementary School, Cedar Lee Middle School and Southeastern Al-

ternative School – implemented safety procedures, the Fauquier County Sheriff ’s Office said in a news release. Deputies found one victim at the scene who had been assaulted and evidence of a firearm being discharged. They arrested, Juan Carlos Juarez, 41, of Stafford, who was charged with malicious wounding, the release said. The man suspected of firing the gun, Juan Jose Pinon Villagomez, 36, of Stafford, had fled the scene, authorities said.

Detectives obtained warrants charging him with one count of attempted malicious wounding, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and one count of JUAN CARLOS JUAREZ use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

The sheriff’s office says he should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fauquier County Sheriff ’s Office at 540347-3300. The affected schools were notified they could return to normal schedules earlier this afternoon.

Juan Jose Pinon Villagomez, 36, of Stafford, is wanted in connection with a shots fired and assault in Fauquier County. PROVIDED

As an example, on Nov. 6 there will be zens with shorthand tweets? But we can’t understand the nation’s policies when two races in two different states where the candidates may be under indictment both political parties speak in shorthand but they still are endorsed by their party and sound bites, and dash from place to because their party only wants to ensure place like Lewis Carroll’s March Hare. And while they use the “doublespeak” victory.

The truth has come to be whatever we want it to be. we read about in George Orwell’s book “1984,” they can’t or won’t disclose their positions clearly. However, they are adept at telling us in detail why the other side is wrong, dishonest or criminal. Even the press, which is supposed to be free and provide the facts, has become extremely biased. Historically, the press has endorsed one candidate or another based on policies they have examined. This is a form of debate and gets the facts on the table. Today, many parts of the press look not for the truth but search for facts that support their position. So, whom are we to believe when the information we are given, no matter which side or where it comes from, is biased for personal or political party gain? The truth has come to be whatever we want it to be. Consequently, it seems we have come to be living in an “Alice in Wonderland” world controlled by a “1984” system. On Nov. 6, we will decide more than which party triumphs. We will define who we are and what we want our world to be like for ourselves and our children. From what has transpired so far, a better world for our country does not look likely. What does look likely is that we will move closer to a world governed by the March Hare, Queen of Hearts and Big Brother. So, when you stand in the voting booth perhaps the best decision you can make is, to follow the words of that great philosopher, Yogi Berra, “…when you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Harvey Gold is a contributing writer at InsideNova. STAFFORD BRIEFS Why I’m voting for Rob Wittman

I am a retired federal employee who worked in the government for 40 years. I am proud to have Rob Wittman as my congressman for Virginia’s 1st Congressional District. He looks beyond partisanship and stands with federal employees. He has the experience of serving at all levels of government (local, state and federal), has provided outstanding constituent services, has demonstrated a strong support for our military men and women and their families, and worked to protect the earned benefits of federal employees and retirees. Earlier this year like most federal employees, I was worried to hear about the president’s attempt to stop the pay raise for people working for the government.

OCTOBER OCTOBER26, 26-NOVEMBER 2018 | INSIDENOVA.COM 1, 2018 | INSIDENOVA.COM

As long as there are thoughtful representatives in the House like Rob, we can be assured that there is a strong voice in our corner. Not only did he quickly come out loudly and clearly in opposition to the president’s plan to freeze the raise, he has also voted in favor of continued employee benefits, opposed cutbacks and proposed legislation to ensure federal employees got paid during a shutdown and provided greater financial protections to civilian federal employees working in combat zones. For retirees like me, he has been a strong advocate to preserve the benefits we have earned during our service. Finally, Rob is vocal about passing our budgets on time and has introduced two pieces of legislation to that effect. I was

pleased to see some progress made in that regard this year. Last minute spending bills, such as continuing resolutions that cost agencies millions of dollars, leave federal employees in a dangerous state of uncertainty. Too often federal employees are shown in a negative light. There are thousands of federal public servants in the Virginia’s 1st District making sure our military, national parks, small business and government programs are serving the American public. Rob fully appreciates that service both at home and abroad. Rob is listening to and fighting for us. That is why I’m voting for Rob Wittman. Gaston Gianni Prince William County

Local residents assist Hurricane Florence victims STEFANIE SHIFFLET HUGHES » BY STAFFORD STAKE OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

Members of the Stafford Virginia Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints sent over 230 volunteers to the New Bern area of North Carolina after Hurricane Florence went aground and caused the third major flood in the area since 2010. A 15-year-old Stafford Senior High School sophomore, Kent Lundquist, was among the volunteers who headed to nearby Pollocksville, N.C. An Eagle Scout and member of the junior varsity football team, Lundquist knew immediately he wanted to participate in the clean-up efforts. “I just wanted to help people,” Kent said. “They have been through so much.” He got permission from varsity head coach Mo Hampton to miss weekend workouts to go to North Carolina to serve. “He was incredibly supportive,” April Wheeler, Kent’s mother, said about getting permission to miss practice. “I was worried it would be a problem, but Coach Hampton thought it was great Kent wanted to go down to help out.”

Other local school administrations supported their students traveling to help a community in need. North Stafford High School Principal Daniel Hornick gave excused absences to students missing school on a Friday to travel to the affected area. As the devastating effects of Florence continue to linger in North Carolina, so too do the volunteers wearing their yellow vests boasting the insignia “Mormon Helping Hands” and sleeping in tents on the church lawn which serves as a makeshift command center. Volunteer efforts began shortly after the storm abated and continue throughout this month by different congregations of the church, with some 500 members participating each week. Stafford Stake President Bradley M. Sant noted that “When we hear about the hurricane on the news, we think about the devastation the people suffered for two or three days; but when we’re down here, we realize that the devastation goes on for months. People’s lives are completely changed; they have lost everything and during the weeks since the storm they have done nothing but clean up debris and empty out what is left of their homes.”

Scouting for Food collection slated for early November

The National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America will kick off its 31st annual “Scouting for Food” collection with a goal of accumulating more than a million pounds of food for the Capital Area Food Bank and other regional food-assistance organizations. “Scouting for Food helps local families in need and teaches our Scouts the importance of directly serving the community,” said Craig Poland, Scout Executive for the local council.

Scouts of all ages will fan out across the region on Nov. 3 to distribute reminder fliers, then return Nov. 10 to pick up food. (To conserve natural resources, the event this year has eliminated the distribution of plastic bags for collection purposes). Among items most in demand are canned protein (tuna, chicken, salmon, peanut butter); soups and stews; 100-percent fruit juices; grains (pasta, macaroni and cheese, rice); canned vegetables; and hygiene products.

Stafford fair opens at new venue After a few years in North Stafford, the agricultural and homemaking fair slipped down to the southern part of the county for this year’s festivities. The new location off U.S. 17 at the Cannon Ridge Golf Course, 9000 Celebrate Virginia Parkway, is courtesy of the Silver Companies. The current Stafford County Agricultural & Homemaking Fair started in 2010 at Mountain View High School under the leadership of Gordon Shelton. The first annual Stafford County Club and School Fair was held at Stafford High School on Oct. 21, 1922. It spanned two days and included a parade from Stafford High School to the court house. The fair was cancelled in 1930 due to drought conditions and revived in the fall of 1931 by combining “Achievement Day” with the county fair, according to the fair website. The fair was on hiatus during WWII but returned in 1948 at the new Falmouth High School. Then over 50 years passed before the county would again have its own fair in 2010.

Our Veterans Day tribute will include information and photos about many of the veterans who live in our area and served our country. Make sure your favorite veteran is included by completing the information online at: http://va.secondstreetapp.com/veterans_day_tribute/ There is no cost, and selected submissions will be published in InsideNoVa/North Stafford on November 9. Automation isn’t killing retail jobs, just changing them here was a time when people chose to use the self-scan checkouts at the grocery store because there was no line. Now the automated lines can be just as long as the old-school version. Whether it’s because we’ve become accustomed to scanning our own groceries, or it’s because we just don’t want to interact with other human beings, consumers are clearly embracing the new automated retail world. In fact, automated checkouts have dramatically increased over the years. An L.A. Times article from 2003 reported, “In the last two years, about a third of all grocery retailers have installed or tested self-scan checkouts.” Flash forward 15 years later to 2018, and data from PYMNTS.com shows that 95 percent of consumers have encountered at least one self-scanning checkout, and 49 percent

T

use them at least once a week at the grocery store. Today, consumers are pre-paying for lattes from their phones, ordering Big Macs from four-foot tall touch screens and Amazon is actually testing a completely automated grocery store that uses an ‘all-seeing eye’ to scan items in your grocery cart and bill your credit card as you walk out the door. But does that mean retail jobs are a thing of the past? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, retail jobs haven’t begun to evaporate quite yet. With 15.9 million jobs as of August 2018, the retail industry continues to grow, in spite of the fact that self-scanning checkouts have been in use for nearly two decades. What is changing, however, are job descriptions. According to ZipRecruiter data, retail and customer service job de-

scriptions have begun to evolve since the introduction of automated checkouts. CHANGING SKILLS REQUIREMENTS IN RETAIL’S NEW AGE

We looked at a sample of half a million retail and customer service job descriptions posted to ZipRecruiter.com over the last two years to find out if skill requirements have changed as a result of the automation revolution. Among the top 20 skills required by employers, cashiering skills dropped steadily in importance throughout the latter half of 2017 and disappeared entirely by February 2018. There was, however, one skill that has become increasingly important in these careers, and that is customer relationship management. In February of 2018 (the time when cashiering skills dropped

from the list), customer relationship management skills ranked 18th out of the 20 skills mentioned most often in retail job descriptions. As of this August, customer relationship management skills ranked as the third most important on our list, behind customer service and communication skills—both consistently the most commonly mentioned skills in nearly every job description, even outside of service-based industries. INCREASED AUTOMATION, BETTER CONSUMER RELATIONS

We’re still not convinced automation will kill retail industry jobs. Right now it just seems to be changing them. As more automation gets introduced into the consumer experience it will become more important for service representatives to engage with customers. Nobody wants to see the entire marketplace become a post-apocalyptic nightmare devoid of emotion altogether. The best retailers will figure out how to optimize this new-found bandwidth among their employees who no longer have to work the cash register. And the best candidates will come equipped to their next retail job with excellent people skills. (Jeffery Marino/ZipRecruiter)

Mom-and-pop shops ramp-up hiring for the holidays abor Day is behind us, the kids are back in class, and the shelves are already stocked with oversized bags of Halloween candy. That means consumers will soon be inundated with advertisements for holiday sales, and retailers are already staffing up to serve the hordes of holiday shoppers. While shoppers will rack up most of their credit card charges online and at the big box stores this season, small and medium-sized businesses will still enjoy a major boost to their bottom line. In fact, the National Retail Federation estimates 20 percent to 40 percent of all SMB retail sales occur in the last two months of the year, and in 2016 Deloitte reported that roughly 40 percent of consumers planned to do their holiday shopping at local retailers. It’s still too early for most analysts to gauge how SMBs will fare this holiday season compared to the mass merchants, but

L

since we deal in real-time data at ZipRecruiter, we’ve got the leading indicators that show exactly how SMBs are feeling about the holiday high season. According to the number of job openings posted to the site by SMB retailers in September, they’re feeling pretty bullish this year. A sentiment that is apparently not shared by their gargantuan competitors. MOM AND POPS OUT-STAFF THE MASS MERCHANTS

In 2015, two years before The Atlantic famously reported on “the great retail apocalypse of 2017” following a string of major retailers going out of business, job openings at large organizations (500+ employees) posted to ZipRecruiter. com outnumbered small retail openings 2-to-1. Today, not only have SMBs closed that gap, they’ve eclipsed the hiring numbers of large organizations, with nearly 30 percent more job openings

posted to ZipRecruiter in September than their big-box counterparts. Both SMBs and large companies have shown holiday season hiring bumps from August through October going back to 2015. But this year is different. While seasonal retail jobs at SMBs continued their upward trend in August, falling incrementally in September, openings at large companies declined in August and dropped dramatically in September. Local businesses may actually be better insulated against the threat of ecommerce than one might expect. MORE SMB JOBS, FEWER EMPLOYEES

Anticipating strong consumer demand this holiday season makes sense given the historically low unemployment rate. The tight job market is a good reason to expect soaring sales, but it also means employers are fighting over a much smaller pool of applicants than in years past.

According to the ZipRecruiter Opportunity Index, which measures the ratio of job openings to applicants, there was one applicant for every retail job opening this September. In September of 2017, there were three applicants chasing every available retail opening. This year there are not only thousands more available jobs, there are also far fewer applicants. A few retail giants, such as Kohl’s and J.C. Penny, have already announced plans to offer generous employee discounts, retention bonuses and additional hours, hoping to snag the few remaining available workers looking for a seasonal gig. SMBs have an edge of their own, given research that shows job seekers generally prefer to work for SMBs. But the motivators that draw job seekers to smaller companies, like being able to see their impact on the company and enjoy a close-knit culture, are likely more pronounced in individuals looking to join an organization for the long term, and might not be as relevant to seasonal job seekers. Ultimately, cash is always king, especially when it comes to temporary and seasonal work. If SMBs want to be successful with filling their hiring needs, they are going to have to budget for bonuses and plan to offer more than what they are used to shelling out for seasonal staff. Dwindling talent could be the nonprofit nonstarter onprofits are in trouble right now, and it’s not why you think. For the past few years heated political rhetoric has made some people pretty worried about the fate of the nonprofit sector. The fear is that they will starve under federal funding cuts ushered in with the 2018 budget and because of recent changes to the tax code that hardly favor our philanthropic friends. But it’s not time to add another pledge drive to the calendar just yet. At least not according to ZipRecruiter data. Along with nearly every other industry in our thriving economy, nonprofits are growing. Nonprofit jobs posted to ZipRecruiter. com increased 11 percent month over month in September and 169 percent year-to-date, far outpacing growth in both the technology and business sectors during the same period. In the Northeast, where most nonprofit jobs are located according to both ZipRecruiter data and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonprofit jobs showed strong quarterly growth at the metro level as well. Washington, D.C., for example, nonprofit jobs spiked 176 percent in Q3 compared to the previous quarter. Openings surged in New York, Providence, and Boston. In September, the number of applicants applying for nonprofit jobs declined 27 percent year-to-date. September also had the fewest number of nonprofit applicants all year. To put this in perspective, in January there were four applicants chasing every nonprofit job posted to ZipRecruiter.com. By September, given the explosive growth in openings and precipitous decline in applicants, there was one opening for every applicant. In D.C., there were nine openings for every applicant in September, continuing a labor shortage that has persisted since June. Mirroring the industry-wide trend, the ratio of jobs to applicants is so high because of the evaporating talent. While the number of openings remained steady from August to September, applicants declined 65 percent. (Jeffery Marino/ ZipRecruiter)

Warehouses are stocked with workers, but can they deliver?

year in August, and showed a marked seasonal bump as well, with openings up 20 percent since July. Notwithstanding the many new warehouse jobs added in August, there were still four applicants competing for every job. To put that in perspective, nearly a quarter of a million job seekers competed over about 50,000 active jobs on ZipRecruiter in August. THE AMAZON EFFECT

ransportation and warehousing is an industry divided. As ecommerce retailers and logistics companies ramp up hiring for the holiday shopping season, the disconnect between warehouse and transportation jobs is perhaps more starkly defined than ever. Put simply, storage and distribution centers are having zero trouble finding willing workers to fill open roles, even with today’s ridiculously low unemployment. Transportation companies, on the other hand, are desperate to fill empty driver’s seats to meet the delivery demands of one of the most prosperous consumer bases in history. It’s hard not to think that the mismatch between warehouse workers and the drivers transporting the goods has something to do with artificial intelligence. After all, autonomous vehicles in the form of selfdriving forklifts and drones already have a major presence in most large-scale ware-

T

house operations. DRIVERS WANTED

Job openings along every stop of the way, from long-haul truck drivers to delivery drivers, have steadily increased over the past several years, thanks to the rise of ecommerce. But the simmering labor shortage has reached a boiling point as the holiday season draws near. Truck driver openings posted to ZipRecruiter in August 2017 increased 85 percent year over year, which is obviously phenomenal growth. However, the number of job seekers applying for truck driver roles back then increased 100 percent over the same period. So, despite the surge in openings last August, there were still fewer truck driver jobs available than applicants, with about two job seekers chasing every truck driver job. The data for this year tells a very different story. Truck driver openings continued to increase at an impressive clip, up 130 percent year over year in August, and

jumping 17 percent since July. While demand continues to surge, the number of applicants has essentially remained unchanged since a year ago, leaving 1.5 job openings for every applicant—an alarmingly low supply of drivers as we approach a potentially record-breaking holiday shopping season. WAREHOUSE WORKERS APLENTY

A major reason why logistics companies are in such dire need of drivers is because the facilities warehousing consumer goods are staffed up and ready to ship. Just as in all “declining” industries, such as retail and manufacturing, warehouse jobs are still being added each month, thanks to a strong economy and robust consumer spending. However, there are far more applicants than openings, which means most storage and distribution centers will not suffer from the historically tight labor market. Warehouse jobs posted to ZipRecruiter increased a healthy 75 percent year over

Even though Amazon is at the forefront of the AI revolution, having already implemented drone technology and giant robotic arms to perform many of the logistical tasks at their distribution centers, they are operating at such an enormous scale that they still need thousands of humans to perform the tasks for which robots aren’t equipped. When we looked at our warehouse job openings at the metro level, we found all but four metros showed annual declines, and three of the four metros where jobs increased compared to last August are all future locations of new Amazon distribution centers. But the droves of applicants hoping to grab warehouse work this season can’t all rely on Amazon for a job. Given the labor shortage in transportation, and demand for customer service reps at brick and mortar retail establishments, there’s no reason why they should be left out in the cold. Police urge teen motorists to be road responsible During National Teen Driver Safety Week, state officials and the Virginia State Police are encouraging young drivers to take charge of their safety, according to a news release. “Every driver has a responsibility to be safe when they are getting on the road, including our newest drivers,” said Gov. Ralph Northam. “National Teen Driver Safety Week is a great opportunity to engrain safe driving habits that will stay with our teenagers for the rest of their lives.” As of Oct. 1, preliminary data in Virginia shows there have been 56 fatalities in crashes involving teen drivers, marking a 36 percent increase over 2017. Of those traffic deaths, 28 individuals were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. “Sadly, motor vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of death for teenagers nationwide, yet this loss of young people’s lives is preventable,” said Col. Gary T. Settle, Virginia State Police Superintendent. “Starting a conversation with teens about safety and responsibility on the road is the first step toward reducing fatalities. We as parents, mentors and friends need to equip the next generation of drivers with the tools they need to navigate the highway tomorrow by encouraging them to practice safe habits today.” Among the most significant dangers to teenage drivers are alcohol consumption, lack of seat belt use, distracted and drowsy driving, speeding, and driving

with passengers in the vehicle, according to the release. As part of National Teen Driver Safety Week, state police joins Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety (YOVASO) in encouraging youth and teens to make good choices and celebrate responsibly as part of its statewide Halloween Safety Campaign. This week, schools and youth groups across the state have been participating in the peer-to-peer campaign in an effort to prevent tragedies on what is supposed to be a fun night for all. Irresponsible driving behaviors such as underage drinking and driving as well as texting and driving can be even more deadly on Halloween night when young children are out trick-or-treating on neighborhood streets. Between 2012 and 2016, there were 168 drunk-driving fatalities on Halloween Night. Approximately 44 percent of all fatalities on Halloween night (6 p.m. Oct. 31 to 5:59 a.m. Nov. 1) were in crashes involving a drunk driver. Before getting behind the wheel, teen drivers are urged to limit the distractions in their vehicle, including human ones. Not only does the risk of a fatal crash increase in direct relation to the number of teen passengers in the vehicle, but the likelihood of teen drivers engaging in risky behavior triples. Approximately 10 percent of teen drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2016 were distracted at the time of the crash.

Virginia Cooperative Extension offers bounty of help for residents Root rot, leaf spots, brown patch— these are all things Stafford residents may be noticing in their yards right now. Thanks to a rainy spring, summer and so far, fall, landscapes are seemingly under attack. Do not despair, according to a county news release. There’s an office out there full of help, and most of it’s free. It’s The Stafford County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension. “Our goal is to help people have a nice lawn with low impact to the environment,” said Guy Mussey, the county’s Extension horticulture agent. “We will

evaluate your lawn through our Smart Green Lawns program, test soil samples and provide a report to you on what you need to do with respect to fertilizers and pesticides.” The program emphasizes the proper way to use fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals. Mussey points out that pesticides are both heavily researched and regulated. Homeowners should take the time to read label information on the label and follow instructions. Mussey said there is a perception that golf courses and farms cause the most pollution, but he cites the misuse of fertilizers by homeowners as

like school gardens and visit homes to assist with gardening questions. Their volunteer hours are estimated to be valued at $537,461 in benefits to Stafford County. Stafford has a thriving 4-H program with hundreds of children participating. Adult volunteers, who have been trained and passed background checks, help with activities like livestock, horse, leadership and sewing clubs. Their signature program is a sleep-away, week-long 4-H camp in Front Royal. This camp, held in July, is open to any children, regardless of participation in 4-H. The Extension office also provides a SNAP program designed by the state to help limited-income children and families acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to practice a healthier lifestyle. Families are taught how to buy, access and prepare healthier food. For more, visit www.stafford.ext.vt.edu.

Mountain View prepares for unbeaten Colonial Forge » BY HUGH RIST FOR INSIDENOVA

When the Mountain View Wildcats began the season with five straight wins their confidence was high, but that confidence may have gone down a bit following consecutive losses to Brooke Point and North Stafford after the bye week. So last Friday’s victory over Riverbend was particularly gratifying for all concerned, especially defensively as the Wildcats stopped the Bears in the red zone three times after an embarrassing defensive performance the week before, according to Mountain View coach Lou Sorrentino. “They [North Stafford] certainly took us to the woodshed. It wasn’t a defensive effort we were very proud of, so it was good to see us get our feet on the ground a little bit against Riverbend,” Sorrentino said. The victory and the solid defensive performance that accompanied it could not have come at a better time, according to Sorrentino, with games against undefeated Colonial Forge this week and Massaponax to end the regular season before the playoffs start. “This game will be a good test for us because we want to do well in the playoffs, and you are certainly going to face a quality opponent in all phases that is well-coached. We will have to play a very clean game to win because they

are too talented and do too many things well. They make you pay for any mistake,” Sorrentino said. Other than the less-than-stellar performance against North Stafford, Sorrentino said the Wildcats’ defense has been the most consistent phase of its game. “I’ve been very pleased with our defense. They have certainly lived up to my expectations. It was good for us to kind of re-find our identity last week, and we have yet to play our best football in all three phases. I think the consistency is something we are wanting to see, and we will need it against a very balanced team like Forge,” Sorrentino said. As is often typical of many teams at this time of year, especially with the bye week far in the rear view mirror, Mountain View has a few nagging injuries that could play a role in the game against undefeated Colonial Forge. Starting quarterback Tyler Haskins, who re-aggravated a shoulder injury against Riverbend and left the game early after running for more than 100 yards and scoring a touchdown, is questionable, but Sorrentino said if he can’t play he has confidence in senior backup Malcolm Anderson, who led Mountain View to several key victories last season. “We will take inventory and see if Haskins can play or not, but if he can’t,

Mountain View head football coach Lou Sorrentino is 6-2 overall this season.

then we know we have a reliable veteran to step in,” Sorrentino said. The Wildcats also have free safety Jashaad Santiago banged up, but Sorrentino said injuries late in the season tend to come with the territory. “That’s why a lot of teams at this time of the season are happy to have depth and that’s certainly true for us,” Sorrentino said. The game against Forge figures to provide “a lot of intrigue,” Sorrentino said, as just about every game does in

the Commonwealth District. “It’s not like it’s a secret that every game in the Commonwealth is tough,” Sorrentino said. “We face one of the toughest, probably the toughest task, in trying to beat Forge, but ball security will be important as it is in just about every game. As I said earlier, we haven’t played our best football yet, and that’s something we hope to do on Friday night [against Forge].” Hugh Rist can be reached at StaffordNews@insidenova.com.

CRITTER CORNER | KAREN PEAK

You can make toys to keep your small pets busy Many of us have small pets like rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, rats, chinchillas and guinea pigs. Like all animals, these critters need various forms of enrichment to help reduce boredom. We can use easy-to-obtain items to create various forage areas to enrich our critters’ lives. First, gather the following materials: • Toilet paper or paper towel tubes • Hemp, sisal or raffia twine • Paper small-animal bedding • Clean cardboard egg cartons • Unused clay flower pots of varying sizes (mini up to 4 inches) • Cardboard squares sized to fit over the bottom and top of the flower pots. • Plain cardboard boxes – small 4x4 or so • Treats, seed mix, fresh veggies, etc. • Orchard grass (it is softer than hay or alfalfa) • KayTee KaBob pet treat dispenser • Beads and chews designed for small animals Now a few easy to make items using the above: Take tubes and stuff with orchard grass and treats. You can also stuff them with bedding animals need to pull out to nest with. Cut apart the egg carton and put holes in the bottoms of each cup. String several on

the KaBob or twine. Put treats and food in each cup then hang from the cage. Take two pieces of cardboard, a clay pot, twine, orchard grass, treats and food. Put a knot at the end of the twine, add the cardboard and the pot. Fill the pot with orchard grass and sprinkle in treats and food. Slide the other piece of cardboard down the twine and put a knot in it. Cut a clean cardboard egg carton into sections of four or six cups with the cover. Put orchard grass or the shredded paper bedding in all the wells. Put food and treats in some of the wells. Close the lid and tie with twine. Take sections of the egg cartons and remove the top. Cut the toilet paper tubes in half and insert into the cups. In the tubes put orchard grass, different treats, bedding, etc. Take the larger clay pots and cut a piece of cardboard large enough to cover the top and bottom. Put a hole through the pieces. Run twine through the cardboard at the bottom and the hole in the bottom of the pot. Stuff the pot with orchard grass and treats. Put the twine through the other piece of cardboard and secure. On the KaBob, layer small pieces of fresh fruits and vegetables that are safe for your small pet. I prefer using KaBobs for this as

Volunteerism, service awards nominations open Nominations are now being accepted for the 2019 Virginia Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Awards, according to a news release. “Each day, citizens across the Commonwealth volunteer their time and talent to make a positive difference in the lives of others,” said Gov. Ralph Northam. “These awards provide an opportunity to honor the dedicated efforts of volunteers and recognize the spirit of service in our communities.” Honors will be presented in nine in-

dividual and group categories, including youth, senior and adult volunteers, faithbased organizations, educational institutions, families that volunteer together, community organizations, small businesses and corporations. This year’s winners will be honored during an awards ceremony next spring in Richmond. Nomination forms must be submitted online and require two letters of support before Dec. 15. they are metal and can be washed after use. Put holes through the center of the cardboard tubes. String them and beads and shapes meant for critters to chew or the KaBob hangers. Stuff the tubes with grass and treats or food. Hang from the cage. For small pets, cut critter-sized holes in a small box. Stuff the box loosely with tissue, grass, paper bedding and treats or food. For larger small pets give them the stuffed box but no holes in the sides. Giving our caged pets the ability to forage for food and treats goes a long way to help al-

leviate boredom. The best thing about these toys (except the ones with fresh foods) is you can make a bunch ahead of time. Spend an hour or two on the weekend with your kids and make a week’s worth of items. Finally, teachers, consider having students make a bunch of toys for local shelters that take in small pets. Puzzles & Horoscopes Need to double check? Find the answers on page 22 CROSSWORD

HOROSCOPES ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) The Moon has returned for its last visit to Aries before Uranus retrogrades back in and with it a chance to polish your antennas and tune into your inner voice. You have a chance coming up for a refresher course. For now, it is all about starting to pay more attention to your inner voice, which the Moon is helping to amplify.

LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) There is no push to commit to your game plan and resolutions for the coming year and even if you do, there is a strong sense that you’re able to change your mind if you want to. Instead, the Sun is using his final day in Libra to simply shine the solar spotlight on the path forward and on your own personal truth.

TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) While the Full Moon is days away and the Moon won’t return to Taurus until literally minutes before, intuitive and imaginative lunar vibes are the perfect chance to start tuning in. Uranus is the planet of surprise, synchronicity and the unexpected and also the planet charged with helping you find your truth. A Full Moon is the perfect vehicle to reveal that truth.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) The Sun will not only return to Scorpio to begin your birthday month and new solar year, but to throw the solar spotlight on everything already building in preparation. This year the door to the future is a glass door, allowing you to already see what’s on the other side. Yet looking ahead, there is a chance to take one last look back over your shoulder.

GEMINI (May 22-June 21) There is something about the social and serendipitous lunar vibes that lend themselves to serendipitous or eureka moments, while at the same time offering an opportunity for a practice run. Uranus, the planet of surprise, synchronicity and the unexpected will be back. As the planet who really knows how to trigger unexpected, serendipitous and eureka moments, this is a practice run. CANCER (June 22-July 22) There won’t be a repeat of last month’s professional pressure or work/life balance tension. Yet with life only getting busier in the final months of the year, this brings the right reminder at the right time. If the Sun and Moon can focus on your home and professional lives without getting in each other’s way, maybe you can as well? LEO (July 23-Aug 22) There is a very real chance that life has become all work and no play and that is not something that is good for anyone born under a Leo Sun. The adventurous lunar vibes bring clues to not just adventurous times ahead, but playful times as well. You’ll find those clues by escaping into your imagination. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) In the Sun’s early days, their opposition created a Full Moon and financial tension as they clashed. Four weeks on the Sun and Moon are preparing to once again oppose each other as a Full Moon, but it is days away and not here. Yet on both the income and financial fronts, this is keeping you on your toes, while reminding you of a need for balance. Especially when it comes to money coming in and money going out.

20

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) The Sun will enter a nostalgic and reflective part of your chart, where it will begin a month long period of reflection, but already you have a foot in both worlds. While the Sun is creating a need to stay socially connected, there is already a growing need to put out the ‘do not disturb’ sign. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) All your senses and all the feedback you’re receiving is telling you this is not the case. The Sun might be moving on, but with Ceres staying on and Venus returning for a double dip visit next week, everything is still evolving. This frees the Sun to make his last full day more about having an authentic new starting point. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) With Juno in her final days in a fun, playful, romantic and creatively charged part of your chart, they are working in tandem to ensure life doesn’t become all work and no play. Yet any hint of conflict between the two is not backed up by what you’re feeling. Even the professional gods know playful and adventurous influences are key to maintaining your productivity and creativity. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) When you’re being realistic about where you’re starting from, it is then just a case of doing what you can, with what you’ve got, from where you’re at. And fortunately, what you have is even more support on the way, with the Moon even picking up on income developments ahead as well. WWW.HOROSCOPEASTROLOGYTAROT.COM
