Colonial Forge learns lessons from challenging schedule HUGH RIST » BY For InsideNoVA
When Colonial Forge coach John Brown reflected on the regular season schedule the Eagles had put together this year, he thought games road games against Grassfield and Freedom and a home game against four-time defending state Class 5 champion Highland Springs would provide a strong litmus test for the kinds of things his team would have to do to achieve its ultimate goal—winning a state title. So rather than taking an easier approach that might have enabled Forge to continue a regular-season winning streak that at one point reached 20 straight games before the Eagles’ narrow loss to Freedom, Brown was patient and content that even though the team might have been able to guarantee home field advantage throughout the playoffs by taking a seemingly easier route, the aforementioned games instead gave the Eagles a battle-tested will that would prove invaluable as this time of year—the postseason—rolled around. Such reflection is the ingredient that makes good teams great and great teams exceptional, so for Brown taking the harder road made much more sense. Colonial Forge hosts Gar-Field Friday at 7 p.m. in a Class 6 Region B first-round game. “I knew when I scheduled those games they would show us where we needed to improve,” Brown said. “We knew to be an

upper echelon team we had to play upper echelon teams, and this provided us the [template] we need to be successful going forward.” Following the Freedom loss, the team took a longer look at playing with the kind of discipline state-contending teams show, not taking the bait when a team tries to draw the Eagles offsides, taking the right kinds of angles when tackling, making sure hand placement is pristine, and the like. That attention to detail has continued to be a point of emphasis since that game and will continue to be as Forge continues what it hopes will be a long postseason run. So what kind of lesson did the team take from the narrow loss (27-20) to Highland Springs two weeks ago? According to Brown, the offensive coaches used the difficulties the Eagles experienced in that game to formulate a better game-plan going forward.
“Going out there, playing fast and not thinking about everything so much has been one of the keys to our success for most of the season.” JOHN BROWN, FOOTBALL COACH, COLONIAL FORGE
“Against Highland Springs, they forced us to make more decisions and slow the game way down,” Brown said. “I think the offensive coaches took the next week and really tried to streamline the offense and allows us to play fast. We are a much better team when we can play fast and we did that [Friday night].” The Eagles steamrolled Stafford 57-14, led by its continued strong defensive play and a 10 for 10 passing night by quarterback Madden Lowe, whom Brown called “smart and a great leader.” While Forge needs to continue to hone in on avoiding

key penalties on ensuring that the special teams aspect of their game is shored up, Brown praised the team’s ability to play well all season, and particularly cited the work of the Eagles’ defense. “The defense has played well all year. In that Highland Springs game, we were able to get five turnovers, but weren’t able to do much with them, so we have focused on shoring that up,” Brown said. “But our defense has certainly had a knack for finding the ball when it’s in the air [or on the ground] and if they continue to do so, we should be able to continue our trajectory,” Brown said. Brown said it is very cliché to say, but the Eagles’ future success may rest as much with the offensive coaches’ ability to put the players in the best position to succeed, as it does to the players’ ability to execute. Streamlining the offense seems to be the key. “[Madden] Lowe said playing football every Friday night is all about having fun,” Brown said. “It doesn’t have to be rocket science out there. Going out there, playing fast and not thinking about everything so much has been one of the keys to our success for most of the season.” Accordingly, having fun and playing fast seems to be the template for a deep run by the Eagles year after year, and Brown hopes that template works like a charm again beginning this week.

Teacher salaries have been something the Republican legislatures, while talking a good game, haven’t addressed all that well. Remember, the state, for many counties and cities, is the largest contributor to funding teacher salaries. Right now, almost every county in our region is experiencing a double-digit turnover when it comes to teacher employment. Too many good teachers are leaving. Just how much extra help the state is willing to give, particularly if it impacts taxes, is an open question. There is also climate change and one proposal is a ban on fracking. That’s the technology that uses high pressure water and chemicals, pumped deep into subterranean shale formations, to recover oil and natural gas. Opponents feel it would potentially damage and pollute local water tables and encourage even more consumption of fossil fuels. This is a contentious issue and may be a tough sell even for a Democratic legislature. Finally, there is redistricting. Democrats ran hard against the Republican gerrymandering which put them into the political wilderness for 25 years. They’ve supported a bipartisan commission. The question, now that they could do what the Republicans did to them, since redistricting is coming up in 2021, is whether they stick to their principles or not. Here’s hoping they do. The General Assembly isn’t known for doing much in a hurry. Usually, the pace is dauntingly slow. But, this session, to borrow a line from a movie, “Throw it into four-wheel drive and hold on to your hats.” David Kerr, a former member of the Stafford School Board, is an instructor in political science at VCU. Authorities have charged a Stafford County woman with the attempted capital murder of her two children, 9 and 4, following a “mental health crisis.” Deputies were called to the 200 block of Campus Drive at 7:58 a.m., after receiving information regarding a distraught woman at a residence. Upon arrival, they found a 9-year-old child and a 4-yearold child alone at the home, the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office said in a news release. Their mother, identified as Tracy Ann Wiggins, 31, was found in her parked vehicle in the area of Centreport Parkway
and the Interstate 95 entrance ramp. Deputies then learned she had attempted to murder her two children before leaving the residence that morning, the news release said. She was taken TRACY WIGGINS into custody and incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail on charges of attempted capital murder.
CRIME BRIEF WOMAN ACCUSED OF ABDUCTION, CHILD NEGLECT A Stafford woman is being held without bond on charges of abduction and child neglect following an incident Nov. 9, according to the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office. Deputies responded around 7:04 p.m. to the 1300 block of Providence Street after reports of a male voice screaming to call police and that he was being held hostage, SCSO spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo said. Deputies arrived at the home and could hear a man and woman arguing inside. The deputies knocked on the door and the female subject, later identified as 47-year-old Marcia Sciscoe, shouted that she needed to get the keys.
A neighbor told deputies there was also a young child inside. The woman failed to comply with the deputies’ repeated commands to open the door, prompting them to breach the door, Vicinanzo said. They found a man in the living room and Sciscoe with an 8-year-old child in the kitchen. The woman was visibly intoxicated and uncooperative, Vicinanzo said. The man told deputies that he came over to visit Sciscoe and when he tried to leave she became agitated and locked the door from the inside. She refused to let him leave the residence and placed the key in an unknown place, Vicinanzo said. Sciscoe was taken into custody.

Leadership colloquium challenges women: ‘Be Your Own Hero’ LISA CHINN MARVASHTI » BY UNIVERSITY OF MARY WASHINGTON
At 25, Cosmo Fujiyama was at a crossroads, stalled between an internship and grad school. She’d had a long day at a professional conference, and she was feeling tired and drained. The last place she wanted to go was to a group dinner at P.F. Chang’s. “It turned out to be an incredible opportunity,” Fujiyama told a roomful of women at UMW’s Stafford Campus, thanks to five words from the young man she sat down beside: “What’s bringing you joy lately?” The question was pivotal for Fujiyama, now 34, who runs a Brooklyn-based consulting firm dedicated to bringing joy and emotional intelligence to the places people work and learn. She repeated the words this morning in her keynote address at the 26th annual Women’s Leadership Colloquium @ UMW. Designed to foster the connectivity of professional women and inspire them toward a lifetime of leadership, the colloquium attracts managers, administrators, educators, business owners and representatives from the public and private sectors each year. Today’s event – brimming with breakout workshops; networking opportunities; and a colloquium-first, one-onone career coaching sessions – revolved around the theme “Be Your Own Hero.” “This room is packed with energy,” Fujiyama told today’s crowd. “Do you feel it?”
Cosmo Fujiyama asked participants at the Women’s Leadership Colloquium to think about what has been bringing them joy.
SUZANNE CARR ROSSI/UMW
The granddaughter of educators, she grew up a first-generation Japanese American in suburban Virginia with parents who immigrated to the United States. She was an undergrad at the College of William & Mary when she co-founded Students Helping Honduras, a nonprofit improving the quality of education in the Central American country, with brother Shin Fujiyama ’07, then a student at UMW. “I am so proud to say that it has impacted thousands of lives both in Honduras and here in America,” said Cosmo Fujiyama, who also has held leadership positions at The Future Project’s Dream Academy, the University of Pennsylvania’s
Center for Social Impact Strategy, and Ashoka, the world’s largest association of social innovators. Seminars throughout the day – led by women who’ve built successful careers all over the Fredericksburg area – aimed to help participants learn how to channel their inner strengths as influencers, form leadership strategies, support each other’s professional journeys, and live bolder, fuller lives. New this year, private career coaching sessions centered on time management, work-life balance, and finding your voice as a woman. UMW College of Business Dean Lynne Richardson, who coordinates the Colloquium and pinch-hit for a seminar pre-
senter with a last-minute family emergency, won the Patricia Lacey Metzger Distinguished Achievement Award. The honor is presented each year at the Colloquium to someone who’s demonstrated leadership in her field, personal and professional integrity, and a commitment to community service. Richardson’s accomplishments put her “far above and beyond these basic criteria by mentoring, teaching, supporting, publishing and leading …” said last year’s Metzger-winner, Central Rappahannock Regional Library Director Martha Hutzel, who noted that Richardson – totally unaware of the honor – had received a precedent-setting 19 nominations. In presenting the award to Richardson, Hutzel described Richardson as her friend and as someone who “holds a leadership position in a male-dominated field.” Fujiyama, whose career has revolved around coaching, facilitating and managing, told the crowd about her father’s enduring love of skiing, a passion he passed on to her. She challenged participants to learn to recognize life’s “lift moments,” which she compared to being on a ski lift, where you can take it all in, sit back and reflect. “My parents taught my siblings and me that anything is possible if and when we lead with compassion, view things with a sense of awe, and stay committed to what we love,” according to her personal bio. “I deeply believe that learning is love made visible.”

Two stores plan to close at Stafford Marketplace As national retailers continue to struggle, two stores at Stafford Marketplace are set to close, as one of the anchors at Spotsylvania Towne Center also announces its plans to shutter that location. After announcing earlier this year that it would be closing all of its stores, Dressbarn started liquidation sales earlier this month. The fashion store is also closing two locations in Fredericksburg, at Central Park and Cosner Corner, as well as the store at Potomac Mills in Woodbridge. This summer, Bed Bath & Beyond announced that it would be closing or relocat-
ing select underperforming locations, and the store at Stafford Marketplace has been advertising that it will be closing for several weeks. Sears announced Nov. 7 that it would be closing more than 50 stores, including the location in Spotsylvania. The stores will be offering sales through the holiday and be closed by February, owners Transformco said in a statement that blamed “a difficult retail environment and other challenges.” Sears will also close the store at the Manassas Mall. Going out of business sales at these stores are expected to begin on Dec. 2.

Region’s 117 overlooks Lake Frederick and the surrounding mountains and is the perfect setting for drinks with neighbors or an anniversary celebration. The culinary team uses locally sourced ingredients, most from within 117 miles of the restaurant (hence the name), to create a diverse and delicious menu of woodfired pizzas, the famous Region’s 117 pot roast, and many other tasty options!

THEATRE REVIEW | MAGGIE LAWRENCE
Leapin’ lizards! It’s Sally Struthers in ‘Annie’ Yes, we’re polarized and angry, uncertain about the future, defensive about our politics, but hey, the sun’ll come out tomorrow! Maybe that sounds like impossible optimism, or “an unstoppable sunshine steamroller” as Ben Brantley called it, but “Annie” has not just survived, it’s thrived because people would rather feel good than bad. Riverside Center for the Performing Arts has been hosting this durable piece of musical theatre in its 22nd season, and it doesn’t disappoint. The production runs through Nov. 17. The little red-headed orphan who entertained our parents and grandparents through the 1920s, the Great Depression and WWII has had a long run. Based on “Little Orphan Annie”, the comic strip by Harold Gray, “Annie” is the 1977 Broadway musical that snapped up seven Tony Awards and ran for six years before spawning a few less memorable films as well as three Broadway revivals. A large and well-meshed cast featuring the hilarious and endlessly watchable Sally Struthers plays like a gift on this stage, and Patrick A’Hearn directs his talented ensemble with clarity and inventiveness. The basic premise: A plucky orphan girl of eleven believes that someday her parents will come back to claim her and manages to escape the harsh,
Sally Struthers, center, plays Miss Hannigan in Riverside Center’s production of “Annie.”
heavy-drinking Miss Hannigan (who has, with bureaucratic perversity, been made head of the orphanage) to search for them. Tables turn, as they must, and the billionaire “Daddy” Warbucks wants to adopt her, but not before two frauds show up claiming to be her ‘real’ parents – with an eye on a generous reward. But have no fear – every ‘hard-knock’ life has a tomorrow, and this is musical theatre where everyone is happy at the end, except our bad guys, who get what’s comin’ to ‘em – and that makes us happy, too.
PROVIDED
Kylee Hope Geraci as Annie brings an adult-sized poise, confidence and vocal range to her role. Sure of herself with the grown-up characters as well as her orphan peers, she has the right combination of strength and vulnerability to get us on her side. Christopher Sanders as “Daddy” Warbucks, looms over her as both physical presence and a symbol of the glittering life she is about to sample, but there is never a sense of the pair being mismatched. Their performance together with the ensemble in “N.Y.C.” is one of
those uplifting moments that forgets all about “hard knocks” and bread lines. Anyone who has seen Struthers in her appearances on this stage can not doubt why she was cast as Miss Hannigan. Her comic genius carries the scenes, and her whiskey-voiced performance of “Little Girls” is worth the price of admission. Miss Hannigan seems to suffer a permanent hangover, but she thinks clearly enough when the subject is how to defraud Oliver Warbucks – a prospect that introduces two of my favorite characters. PJ Freebourn as the rubbery con artist, Rooster Hannigan, and Gabrielle Donadio as Lily, his partner in crime, are a hoot and a half. Their utterly conscienceless scheme plotted with Miss Hannigan is summed up in the jaunty, vaudeville flavored “Easy Street”. This is not a show of “pretty” voices. Singing is strong, together, and ultrabright – which seems to fit the overall tone of gosh-darned enthusiasm supported by Carson Eubanks’ seven-piece orchestra. So there it is – a solid rendering of an old, but not overdone, favorite, wisely kept in 1933 and still overflowing with buoyancy and good feelings. Who couldn’t use a little bit of that? Maggie Lawrence is a member of the American Theatre Critics Association. She is a retired English and drama teacher.

CRITTER CORNER | KAREN PEAK
Let’s imagine proper pet training Would you like to play a game? I would. It is called Let’s Imagine. Let’s Imagine! You are a kindergartener and I give you a High School AP Calculus test to complete. Every mistake results in something negative from me. Let’s Imagine! You are dropped into a village where the inhabitants live what we would call “primitively.” You are given one day to learn how to become a functioning member of the village. Let’s Imagine! I am teaching you a task but speaking a different language. You make mistakes. I respond with pokes and nudges. As more mistakes are made, I increase my response to firmer jabs, pinches, slaps, I raise my voice, etc. Let’s Imagine! You are trying to express fears to me. I think they are silly. As you become more anxious, I punish your behaviors. Let’s Imagine! I am your boss. I stop paychecks because I feel your love for me should be enough to keep you working. Hmmm, do the above Let’s Imagines sound like fun? Do they sound humane? Will they build trust? Will they encourage learning for the right reasons? Let’s change things up and play the game again. Let’s Imagine! You are a kindergartner. I carefully evaluate what skills you have. I gear my teaching towards your needs. I gradually increase the challenge as
you master each level. Moving forward is based on how you are doing. If you struggle, I reteach earlier lessons. Let’s Imagine instead of dropping you into a primitive village and leaving you, I took the time to help you prepare. I teach you the language, cultures, how to survive. I then spend as much time as you need alongside you helping guide you through your new life. Let’s Imagine I take the time to learn how to communicate with you. As I teach you my language, I learn yours. Let’s Imagine I take the time to respect your concerns and fears as personal. Even if they seem silly to me, I am not you. I work to help you through your concerns. When I see things are becoming too much. I stop and give you an escape before you feel the need to reach a full-blown panic. Let’s Imagine, as your boss, I recognize the need for you to be paid. I also give you meaningful feedback and various bonuses. Stop and reflect on “Let’s Imagine.” Which ways do you think will improve learning and bonding? Which ways may get the behaviors you want but for the wrong reasons? Ask yourself “Which ways would I rather be taught.” Now, consider the methods many people working with animals use in the name of “training.” Prong collars, “alpha” rolling,
shocks, pinches, intimidation and fear. There is no need to train with any of these things. You can teach self-control and manners without aversive methods. Positive reinforcement does not mean ignoring undesired behaviors. Positive trainers understand the science behind learning. They understand how to be proactive and teach behaviors incompatible with things owners don’t like. They work to teach you the least stressing methods for teaching your pet to exist in your home.
When you talk to trainers, ask what methods they would use for different scenarios. Choose those who follow the science behind learning. Choose those who understand the fallout from punitive and aversively based training. We are going to play one more round of Let’s Imagine. Let’s Imagine! You take your time to research and interview trainers. You look past results and concentrate on the methods used to obtain those results.
