Army dad gives happy surprise
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Casey Doolin, left, visits his children at Park Ridge Elementary School for an after Veterans Day celebration. SUBMITTED
After organizing the Park Ridge Elementary School Veterans Day celebration for the past 18 years, guidance counselor Sharon Stiefel produced her last one — before she retires — on the 100th anniversary of the holiday. Past and present service members with children at the school paraded into the auditorium Nov. 13, greeted by cheering students who waved flags. Each grade level sang a patriotic song directed by music teacher Sydney Kimbrough. The last soldier to enter the auditorium
was the special guest, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Casey Doolin, who is deployed to Korea. Doolin has four children who attend Park Ridge — Cyrus, Cierra, Cade and Caitlyn — and two at other county schools (Clara at Rodney Thompson Middle School, and Carissa of North Stafford High School). All six children were at the ceremony and sat in the front row of the honored guests along with seven other children who have a deployed parent. Doolin will return to Korea for six more months right after Thanksgiving.
Region’s business leaders ready for Amazon boom Greater Washington Partnership says transportation, other issues need to be tackled collaboratively EMILY SIDES » BY esides@insidenova.com
Business leaders are confident Amazon’s plans to bring half of its second headquarters to Crystal City in Arlington County is a win for the region. But transportation, housing and continued support for a pipeline of workers will be key to making the most of the company’s move. Amazon announced Nov. 13 that it will bring more than 25,000 jobs and invest $2.5 billion in the new National Landing that includes sites in Crystal City and Potomac Yard. Some of the region’s top CEOs working with the Greater Washington Partnership hosted a conference call Thursday to discuss Amazon’s plans. The partnership is composed of CEOs from across the region who are committed to working together to support the region’s growth. The region’s key to success will be how well business, community, university and community college leaders work together, said Russ Ramsey, the partnership’s chair and CEO of Ramsey Asset Management. “We need to seize this moment,” Ramsey said. Virginia Tech, George Mason University and other higher education institutions will be important to educating students who could work at technology companies like Amazon, Russ said. In addition, the partnership wants to start a youth initiative to expose K-12 students to STEM job skills. Virginia, Virginia Tech and Alexan-
dria officials revealed on Tuesday plans for a $1 billion Virginia Tech innovation campus at a portion of Potomac Yard, less than two miles from where Amazon’s new headquarters will be located. The 1 million-square-foot graduate campus will “drive technology education and research [and] serve high-tech disciplines of the future,” according to the release. “As Virginia’s land-grant institution, we stepped up to claim our role of driving economic development by leveraging our strengths in technology and engineering, and building on our strong partnerships in Washington, D.C.,” Virginia Tech President Tim Sands said in a statement. Sheila Johnson, CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts, said the area’s effort in 2014 to try to bring Olympics 2024 to D.C. was the foundation that helped prepare the region to pitch itself to Amazon. Salamander Hotels & Resorts has multiple locations in Virginia, South Carolina and Florida, including Salamander Resort in Middleburg. “...When one wins, we all win,” she said. “...We know change is not easy; we’re cleareyed about the challenges in the capital region. We have the benefit of time to get it right. They won’t move here overnight.” Ted Leonsis, vice chair of the partnership and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, said Amazon’s second headquarters is a “fantastic moment for our community.” Monumental Sports & Entertainment owns sports teams such as the Washington Capitals, which won the
National Landing, site of Amazon’s new Arlington headquarters.
Stanley Cup earlier this year. “Our theme and banner of ‘when one wins, we all win,’ will come to play on this,” Leonsis said. “We have a belief in regionalism…It’s not Washington, Virginia or Maryland; it’s a super region. We’ll all be good stewards to make sure there is a good balance, that this is a win-win-win for Amazon, for business and all the citizens who work and live in this community and the ancillary businesses that will benefit.” The Greater Washington Partners plans to release a regional mobility plan in the coming weeks, said Jason Miller, CEO of the partnership. The plan will outline proposed transportation investments. The lack of affordable housing is a

problem that existed before Amazon’s announcement, now the pressure is on to make sure there’s affordable housing in the region, Miller said. “Amazon’s expansion is a catalyst for us to take this on,” he said. Partnership leaders agreed Amazon’s move to Arlington County will have a large impact on the region. Peter Scher, vice chair of the partnership and chair of the Mid-Atlantic region for JPMorgan Chase, said the region extends from Baltimore to Richmond. “This will spread throughout the region,” he said. “...If we continue the collaboration we’ve seen over the last couple of years, we can achieve that.”

They did this on their own. But going a step further than that, in an era of empires and Kings, where self-government as we know it was relatively unheard of, this practical document was radical. It was an outline of how a democratic government should function. Every male had a vote and the majority would rule. Signed on Nov. 22, 1620, it was written 156 years before the American Revolution. The era of the Founding Fathers was a long way off. But John Adams, one of the most insightful leaders in the founding of our early republic, considered the Mayflower Compact to be a foundation stone in the development of our constitutional form of government. According to state law the legal status of students is deemed basically irrelevant for political reasons. Stafford County simply doesn’t know how many of their 20.5 percent Hispanic students who may be illegal are added school expenditures subsidized by taxpayers. With migrants continually flocking to our southern border seeking asylum or crossing illegally, it stands to reason why Trump signed a recent proclamation to bar those who violate our laws. So the argument of compassion and failure to enforce immigration mandates continues as Democrats take control of Congress. Ultimately, someone must pay. I know who that someone is. When was the last time our new school superintendent, Scott Kizner, or long serving school board chairwoman Patricia Healy, publicly stated the need to enforce our immigration laws to the letter, acknowledging the unjust fiscal burden on our residents? Good Samaritans, fire and rescue personnel save driver’s life When Jim Kendrick left his Hartwood home Sept. 10, he didn’t know that he was about to become part of an elite group of people – the less than 8 percent who annually survive a cardiac arrest outside a hospital. As he was driving south on Interstate 95 instead of taking the usual back road to his mother’s house, Kendrick’s heart stopped beating, according to a Stafford County news release. When his car started weaving and eventually bumped into a Jersey wall and stopped, U.S. Navy Lt. David Doucet and his wife, Heather, were returning from Washington, D.C., to their home in Virginia Beach when they spotted him and immediately pulled over to help. Doucet used a special tool he keeps in his car to break windows in the event of an emergency. Chief Warrant Officer Shipley, of Hartwood, saw what was happening and stopped to help, along with an unidentified driver. Both military men had been trained in emergency aid and started cardiopulmo-

nary resuscitation and called 911. Thanks to their training, the men continued CPR, recognizing that gasping by Kendrick was not real breathing and that CPR was still needed until Stafford County Fire and Rescue personnel arrived to take over. Kendrick survived and was reunited recently with the men who helped save his life.
There were smiles all around at the informal gathering at the Ford T. Humphrey Public Safety Building. “Thank you for staying up [with] all the emergency medical skills. Super job! Your training has all paid off,” said Kendrick. “I don’t know how to express my thanks. It’s an honor to be here.”
“There were hundreds of people who passed by that day, but these bystanders stopped. Those minutes counted and made all the difference,” said Fire and Rescue Lt. Brian Thompson. According to the American Heart Association, brain death starts to occur four to six minutes after someone experiences cardiac arrest if no CPR and defibrillation occurs. CPR helps maintain vital blood flow to the heart and brain, and increases the amount of time that an electric shock from a defibrillator — like the ones that are in every ambulance and most public buildings — can be effective. CPR can buy extra time for a victim if started immediately. Stafford County’s PulsePoint app from the iTunes Store is a free application for smartphones so residents trained in CPR can be notified immediately if someone nearby goes into cardiac arrest. As well as alerting users to those in cardiac arrest, the app also pinpoints the closest location of public automated external defibrillators.

If you’re cold, they’re cold — or not Here it was, midwinter, dang cold, snow blowing. It was just not all that nice out — unless you were a dog named Seven. Outside in the cold and snow. Here’s the thing, Seven was NOT cold. In her younger days she lived for the fall, winter and early spring. Seven hated the warmer weather. Why? Well, Seven was a Great Pyrenees. This breed was developed over centuries to guard flocks in the Pyrenean Mountains. All my dogs back then enjoyed the winter: Australian shepherd,
Newfoundland, two Shetland sheepdogs and yes, my Pyr. Unless it was in the 20s and windy, Hunter, Ryker, D’Argo and Seven would drive me crazy during the winter, demanding to be outside — even if I thought it was too cold. Currently, I have two senior shelties who are not as fond of the cold anymore. I have an adult who is not as winter-loving as my past dogs. My daughter’s standard Schnauzer likes the winter but is not as suited for some of the temperatures my

past dogs were fine in. The schnauzer and the oldest sheltie often go to cold weather and even winter dog events —outside. We decided after last year that this is the year the two who go to outside events would get jackets. So why are some dogs better suited for the cold weather and others not? Simple; there is not a “one size fits all” approach for dogs in the winter. Let’s look at a few factors. Dogs developed for colder weather life and work have a thick, double coat. This means a harsher, weather-resistant outer coat with a softer, insulating undercoat. However, even within a breed you may have individuals that do not coat up as well. I have met various shelties lacking an undercoat, even in winter. Larger dogs have a lower surface-tobody ratio compared to small dogs. That double-coated Pomeranian may chill sooner than a Newfoundland. Dogs that are too thin will not handle the cold as well. This does not mean you should allow your dog to become fat over the winter. It means you should know what is healthy for your dog and adjust your winter care for it.
Some breeds are naturally lean and may benefit from a coat in cold temps. Even within breeds bred for colder weather, if they are not properly conditioned, they will not handle colder weather as well. That northern breed who has been a house pet with limited outside time in the winter will not handle it the same way as other dogs may. However, those working livestock guard dogs or working sled dogs are not your typical house pet. They are conditioned. That toasty fire you build on cold winter nights may be too warm for these dogs, thought just right for yours. Now we have to think age and health. Puppies and younger dogs, older dogs and those with medical issues may not handle the cold as well as a younger dog in good health. Brachycephalic breeds, especially smaller ones, have a harder time maintaining body temperature in cold weather. If it is drizzly, foggy, otherwise damp, overcast and/or windy along with being cold outside, your dog will chill faster. So, how cold it too cold? It varies dog to dog. You have to know your dog, his type, what he can handle and the signs of a dog being cold. Local real estate market rebounds slightly in October The October real estate market in the Fredericksburg area posted increases in total sold dollar volume and median price, according to analysis by the Fredericksburg Area Association of Realtors based on analysis of BrightMLS multiple listing data. Units sold came in at the same amount as 2017. Total sold dollar volume increased from $128.8 million in October of 2017 to $138 million in October of 2018, representing a 7 percent year-over-year increase. Median sold price increased 3.5 percent, going from $285,000 in October of last year and increasing to $295,000 in October of this year. The 419 properties
sold in October of 2018 was on par with last year. “Heading into the end of the 2018 real estate market, it’s been a great year overall in the Fredericksburg area. October has seen a typical, seasonal slowdown in sales. Notably, the beginning of the month was slower while there were encouraging signs of strength in activity as November approached,” said FAAR Board Director Chip Taylor. Inventory remained static in October, with nearly the exact number of homes on the market as in October of 2017. Prospective buyers have 1,654 homes to choose from right now, with 733 new listings coming onto the market.

Puzzles & Horoscopes Need to double check? Find the answers on page 11 CROSSWORD THEME: HOLIDAY SONGS
HOROSCOPES ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) As much as you might be ready to put out the ‘do not disturb’ sign and may be in need of time out, there is a need to remain as plugged in and available as possible. This will begin an important period of reflection that will run for the rest of this year. For now remain as plugged in as possible, giving your time and attention generously, before pulling back. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) While Venus is just a days away from turning direct in your work sector and Mercury is turning retrograde in your financial sector, for now they are staying put. The only real shift is Mars, in your career sector a chance to bring your professional instincts, imagination, passions and fighting spirit together in a way that makes it clear what you’re fighting for. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Adventurous lunar vibes come with perfect timing, especially as they bring with them a chance to fully embrace a passion for adventure, on a week when there is a lot of romantic nostalgia in the air. What makes the timing so perfect, is that your professional year is set to receive a massive boost, just a week after Jupiter’s departure from your work sector. CANCER (June 22-July 22) For the second time Mars is ready to move on, but unlike back in August, he won’t do a U turn and come back. This time Mars really is moving on and with the Moon on board, you’re able to bring your financial instincts, imagination, passions and fighting spirit together in order to take your financial power back. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) As Mars spends it’s last couple of days in your relationship sector, even without the Moon here fuelling your emotional responses, the focus was always going to be on your relationships. At the same time with Venus, the planet of love in retrograde motion in your communication sector, the focus was always going to be on giving your heart, relationships, the past and unsaid words a voice. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) There is a need to assume that you’re going to be busy, with Mars making sure of that. While you can’t change that fact, you can choose how you’re going to use this urgent and busy energy, choosing to use it rather than let it use you. If you’re going to be busy then at least you can, as much as possible either decide what you’ll be busy doing or if you can’t, choose to use this to your advantage.
8
LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) Having the Moon in a fun, playful, romantic and creatively charged part of your chart. On one hand, this will make it easier to embrace Mars’ romantic and creative passions, giving you a better chance to make this final time count. Yet, on the other hand, this is also a chance to keep your work hat off as much as possible. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Having the Moon on board during Mars’ last days in your home and family sector is a chance to squeeze out every possible advantage. If you want to make things happen or get things done on the home front, don’t put this off. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) As you move into the final week of your old solar year, you already have Jupiter and Mercury in Sagittarius, with new doors to the future already open. This is giving you the best of both worlds, with the lines between the past, present and future blurred. Yet while the new doors Jupiter is opening are the bright and shiny new things getting your attention, there is still the more mundane job of bringing your old solar year home. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) We are in for another round of change over the next few days, but the only real urgency is on the income front. Venus will remain in your career sector and Mercury in an intuitive and imaginative part of your chart, for now anyway, with just their orientation changing. Yet this isn’t just about the money, with Mars giving you the courage to fight for everything you deserve. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) Having the Moon in Aquarius during Mars’ last couple of days here is giving you a real advantage. At the same time that Mars is fuelling your passions and fighting spirit, he is also drawing your attention to the things that you can remain passionate about after he leaves. Once on the right path, you can take over from. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) This is the time for getting as much rest as possible. If you find that you’re starting to feel lazy or unmotivated, then chances are you’re exactly where you need to be. Chances are you will still need to show up, either to work or with life’s other responsibilities, but as much as possible stay in the slow lane. WWW.HOROSCOPEASTROLOGYTAROT.COM

Football and the military helped Colonial Forge assistant coach overcome troubled childhood HUGH RIST » BY FOR INSIDENOVA
The life story of Colonial Forge defensive line coach Will Berris reads almost like a feel-good movie script as he rose above a turbulent childhood to eventually become what he calls a “servant of my country and community,” after a military career of 32 years and a separate tenure as a volunteer coach for several sports, including football, soccer, and lacrosse. Now, with his retirement as a Marine Corps colonel in December, Berris is awaiting his next steps, while experiencing the excitement and fulfillment that comes from being a contributor to Colonial Forge’s gridiron success the past two seasons. Eagles coach John Brown said Berris, who has been on Forge’s coaching staff since September 2017, has been a calming influence on a defensive unit on which his son, Willie, a sophomore cornerback, plays. “He doesn’t ever seem frazzled and likes to always think one step ahead,” Brown said. “You can see the influence of the military background because he has a saying that our defense has to have ‘unparalleled discipline.’ He has come a long way as a coach, just like the players he coaches have done, getting better every week.” Rising from a difficult childhood to a disciplined and determined leader has become Berris’ mantra. He said he is proud to share his story when speaking
with any group of young men, including Forge’s players. “I think my story shows that anyone can rebound from difficulties if you have discipline and enthusiasm,” Berris said. “In life, adversity is certain. It’s your choices, how you choose to navigate and overcome it that make the difference.”
A ROUGH BEGINNING Berris’ last name was originally spelled Berrios, but he made the decision along with his wife in 1999, to drop the ‘o’ after finding out his biological father was not the same man he was led to believe he was. “At that time, my wife and I thought why not drop the “o” and then we can start our own heritage anew,” Berris said. Berris’ decision is one of many he felt he needed to make to help move beyond a turbulent past. Berris grew up a product of the foster system due to never knowing his biological father and the fact his mother was incarcerated in federal prison. Sports became an outlet. Due to the uncertainty of his living situation, Berris had a difficult time navigating high school, a situation that came to a head during his junior year when he was kicked off the football, basketball and track teams. A lot had to do with his adverse living situation. After leaving the foster care system when his mother was released from prison, Berris lived with her for a short time. “But it became a toxic situation and I
After college, Will Berris (No. 8) tried out with the New York Giants.

Col. Will Berris will retire in December from the Marine Corps. WESTERN MICHIGAN
couldn’t live with her anymore,” Berris recalled. So, from that point on, Berris lived a number of places on a short-term basis, first with a friends, then behind the town’s public library, and later in a car he purchased for $100. Because of the uncertainty surrounding his living situation, he was unable to show up on time, or even at all, to many practices, so the coaches dismissed him from the team. At that point, Berris made a pivotal decision to join the Coast Guard following his junior year of high school. It was the beginning of a six-year tenure as a reservist that set the wheels in motion for the rest of his future.
BEGINNING OF THE REBOUND Following his Coast Guard orientation during the summer after his junior year, things began to turn around for Berris. He was invited back to play for the football team and also reinstated to the track team, whose coach invited him to live with him once he heard his story. Berris said the basketball coach did not give him another chance, however. Fortunately for Berris, he was able to become a member of a team that advanced to the state 4A championship game. The title game was particularly significant for Berris, both because of who was in the stands, and who his team played — Warren Central High School from Indianapolis, Indiana, whose quarterback was future NFL player Jeff George. “I had a great game, three interceptions, one fumble recovery and several key tackles. I caught the eye of a certain coach in the stands, Jack Harbaugh of Western Michigan, and the rest is history,” Berris said. Berris played every game at defensive back/safety at Western Michigan from 1985-1988, eventually becoming team captain during his senior year. Jack Harbaugh’s son John, who now coaches the Baltimore Ravens, was one of Berris’ first position coaches. Berris eventually earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education. “From the beginning, Jack was a mentor, and he is still a friend,” Berris said. “He’s a great man. We still get together at a Ravens game or when I am in the
Michigan area and still keep in touch by phone or text.” The success he had in college led to a tryout with the New York Giants, who were then coached by Bill Parcells, and whose defensive coordinator was current New England Patriots coach, Bill Belichick. “It was thrilling being on the same field with Lawrence Taylor,” Berris recalled. However, Belichick cut Berris, who went on to serve as a graduate assistant with Western Kentucky when Jack Harbaugh was hired to coach there. Following his one-season stint as a graduate assistant, when he earned his master’s in secondary education, Berris felt the calling to serve in the military full-time and felt the Marine Corps was the best fit. So, after talking to the elder Harbaugh, who gave his blessing but also assured Berris he had a home on Harbaugh’s staff if the military didn’t work out, Berris asked for and was granted an inter-service transfer to the Marine Corps, where he would serve for 26 years.
COMING TO THE FORGE During the summer of 2017, Berris, just before finishing an overseas deployment. reached out to then-coach Bill Brown about coaching for the Eagles. It wasn’t a strange request because his son Willie was coming to Forge and because Berris had continued to coach various sports on a volunteer basis during his entire career in the military. At first, the elder Brown told Berris there were no openings. “I thanked him for talking to me and told him if he needed any help to let me know,” Berris said. “Just about a week before [the 2017] season, Brown emailed me and asked if I wanted to coach. I told him, ‘Of course I would like to.’ And he said, ‘We start in a week.’” Berris said he enjoys the opportunity to work with a group he calls “a great bunch of young men” and said he is privileged to be able to give back to a community that has given so much to him. He also said his military background has shaped his performance as a coach. “I’ve always felt like the football field and the battlefield led to a natural transfer. Both involve standards that have to be maintained. It’s important to be ready and to lead people to be at their best mentally, physically, and spiritually,” Berris said. “Coaches are guiding lights to preparing people to be at their best and that’s why I am privileged to serve as a coach at Colonial Forge.” For now, Berris, 51, is awaiting his next occupational step. He said he is open to pursuing any opportunities in secondary education that may present themselves and is enjoying working with an outstanding coaching staff at Forge. “As a parent of a kid in the program, I want to know who’s going to have influence over my son, and the Colonial Forge parents are very fortunate. The experience of the coaches is of such high caliber and they are good men, so they can help the kids not only on the football field, but build them as men,” Berris said.
