Stafford deputies catch pair with stolen vehicle Two women allegedly seen breaking into vehicles in south Stafford were arrested in the early morning hours of Dec. 5, according to Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office spokesperson Amanda SABRINA ALI Vicinanzo. At 1:30 a.m., Deputy James Wright responded to the 100 block of Jousting Court after three persons were spotted peering into vehicles with flashlights. The deputy tried to make a traffic stop but the vehicle, reported stolen from Leesburg, accelerated and a chase was on. In the area of Dent Road, the vehicle struck a deputy’s cruiser and continued traveling onto Regents Lane, where it came to a stop. The three occupants then ran away, Vicinanzo said. After a short chase, Deputy Justin For-

Stafford students share safety message: ‘Steer Into the New Year - Buckle Up’ Several schools across the state are participating in this season’s “Steer Into The New Year- Buckle Up and Drive Safely” holiday campaign with a goal to keep teen drivers and passengers safe during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. The campaign includes students from Shirley Heim Middle School in Stafford and Walker-Grant Middle School in Fredericksburg, according to a news release. Sponsored by Youth of Virginia Speak Out and the Virginia State Police, “Steer Into the New Year” is an effort to reduce teen fatalities during what has become a high-risk period for young drivers. Over the past three years during the month of December, 22 teens aged 15 to 20 have died in motor vehicle crashes in
Virginia and 1,964 were injured, according to statistics from the Virginia DMV Highway Safety Office. During the same time period, young drivers aged 15-20 accounted for 5,296 crashes and 28 fatal crashes in the Commonwealth during the month of December. In an effort to get teen drivers and passengers to change behaviors and be safer this holiday season, the “Steer Into The New Year” campaign will focus on peerto-peer influence. Students at participating schools will take the lead in posting pictures enjoying the holidays on their social media accounts with safe celebration/safe driving messages and encourage their classmates, friends and loved ones to do the same.

In a bizarre With that in mind, last week the twist of events, which still defies easy explanation, teachers paused and debated Stafford County School Board post-
ed its draft inclusion policy for transgender students. It’s four pages long and begins with the statement “that the purpose of this policy is to foster an educational environment that is safe, welcoming, and free from discrimination for all students, regardless of the student’s gender identity or expression.” As preambles go, that’s pretty good. The proposed policy says that a student’s choice of gender identification, which must be comprehensively documented, will be respected and that the school system will accommodate that choice. That’s really all there is to it. Its positive, its kind, it’s clear and it’s practical. The policy addresses gym classes, bathrooms and overnight school trips. Each element of the policy is based on the premise that a student identifying as a gender other than their biological one will be accommodated. As a friend of mine put it, “It’s simply a policy of inclusion”. Make no mistake — there will be opposition. There will be opponents on the school board and in the community. There will be mischief-makers, too. There is bound to be an intense debate, and it may even get ugly. But, hopefully, common sense and our community’s inherent sense of decency will win the day. into our lives. While it may sound old fashioned, electronic holiday greetings are not the same. Emails, tweets and texts have no handwriting that identifies a special someone. They are one-dimensional. They don’t carry a picture or specially chosen artwork that makes the written message grander. It doesn’t say, “I took a lot of time to find, write, address and mail an envelope full of more than just words to folks considered special.” Christmas cards sadly seem to be going the way of postcards, singing telegrams, handwritten letters, and handmade gifts. And, since we are losing the custom of sending lists or cards to Santa, coupled with the fact that most homes don’t have a real fireplace or a chimney, Santa will no longer come down the chimney but instead will have to knock on your front door or send a drone or a robot elf to deliver the carefully chosen presents. Or, there is the possibility that Santa’s work will be outsourced to China or some other country. I guess I really miss the old days and I am old fashioned after all. How Healthy Feet Can Reduce Your Risk of Falling
A
mong older Americans, falls are the number one cause of injuries and death from injury, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Not only are seniors more at risk for falls, when they do so, it poses a greater risk for injuries, hospitalization and complications. For a ground-up approach to fall prevention, seniors should start by examining the health of their feet. “Painful foot conditions, such as osteoarthritis, corns, bunions, hammertoes and diabetes complications, can make it difficult for seniors to maintain balance and coordination when walking or standing,” says Michael Ambroziak, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon
and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ACFAS). “Compounding the issue is that the very exercises intended to correct risk factors for falls, such as lower-body weakness, as well as gait and balance problems, are made difficult to perform when one is suffering from painful foot and
Tips to Keep Clothes Looking their Best in Winter inter is dirty, and unfortunately, all that slush, salt and mud coincides with the use of the delicate and expensive part of your wardrobe, from wool and cashmere sweaters and scarves to swanky party wear. But you can keep your clothes looking their best this winter, without breaking the bank at the dry cleaners, using the following tips: Use garment bags: Get a head start on looking your best by ensuring your clothes look good before you even put them on for the day. Store suits, dresses, sweaters and other delicate items in garment bags to keep them safe from dust, moths and other closet hazards at home and when traveling. Waterproof: On wet days, consider wearing waterproof shoe covers and tucking your pants into them to protect shoes, as well as the hems of your pants, from puddles and slush. At-home dry cleaning: Slash your dry cleaning expenditures by up to 90 percent and skip the hassle and harsh chemicals by opting for at-home dry cleaning using your own dryer. With the right product, it will be an effective
W
way to safely and thoroughly clean your special care clothes at home. For no fading, shrinking or stretching of your winter weather gear like scarves, hats, sweaters and more, consider using Dryel, a quick three step process which works in the convenience of your dryer in as little as 15 minutes. The heat of the dryer activates a cleaning solution to release a steam that removes body soils and odors from clothes, and a fabric protection bag maintains the optimal balance of cleaning agents and heat, allowing the steam to work thoroughly through the clothes. Landing area: Create a mud room. This can be just a few square feet of space by the entrance to your home and ideally located near the washer and dryer for quick transfer of clothes that need to be laundered. This is also the place to immediately remove boots and outerwear to avoid tracking mud into your home. This winter, protect your wardrobe from seasonal elements. New tools and old tricks can help your favorite winter gear survive the season in great condition. (StatePoint)

ankle conditions.” While the factors causing falls are numerous, experts say that seniors, and everybody for that matter, can take steps to reduce their risk by minimizing or even eliminating foot pain. Doing so will improve balance, coordination and stability when walking or standing. Foot and ankle surgeons recommend the following ways to help keep feet and ankles healthy: Don’t ignore pain: Foot pain is not just a normal consequence of growing older, so don’t resign yourself to aching and suffering. You likely have a treatable condition. For a proper diagnosis and intervention, be sure to pay attention to your feet and see a foot and ankle surgeon if and when you experience pain. Examine your feet: You are the gatekeeper of your own health, making regular at-home foot examinations critical. At the sign of bumps, lumps or other changes in your feet, make
an appointment with your foot and ankle surgeon. Exercise: Simple stretching exercises can help you maintain strength and mobility in your feet and ankles, as well as provide pain relief. Talk to your physician about appropriate exercises for you. Protect: Use padding, insoles or whatever special footwear you are prescribed. Be sure to wear these, along with comfortable, sensible shoes, every day. Be flexible: Know that at times, surgery is the most appropriate treatment for a given condition. Fortunately, many simple surgical techniques allow foot surgery to be performed on an outpatient basis. For more ways for to keep feet and ankles healthy, prevent falls or to find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, visit FootHealthFacts.org, the patient education website for ACFAS. Foot and ankle surgeons are experts in providing both conservative care as well as surgical approaches to foot and ankle healthcare. Remember, just one fall can permanently rob seniors of their independence and dramatically reduce their quality of life. Taking good care of feet and ankles however can reduce the risk of a life-altering slip, trip or fall. (StatePoint)

What you Need to Know About Timeshares
I
t’s estimated that at any given time, there are over 1 million timeshare owners looking to end their timeshare ownership. Unfortunately, exiting a timeshare is more complex than many people realize. “Timeshare owners are never more vulnerable than when they’ve made the decision to end their ownership. The resale market is flooded, resorts have stacked the deck and con artists are waiting to take advantage of your situation,” says Gordon Newton, president of Newton Group Transfers and author of “The Consumer’s Guide to Timeshare Exit.” There are several personal or financial reasons you may want or need to exit your timeshare, and there are several ways to do so, be it via a sale, transfer or cancellation. No matter how you part ways with your timeshare, Newton
says it’s important to protect yourself by having a better handle on the industry. He offers the following insights to anyone who owns a timeshare: The fine print in your timeshare agreements may be the reason you can’t sell it. Many resort developers see the resale market as a direct threat to their revenue stream
and have accordingly rigged the system in their favor. For example, some resorts restrict rights and benefits for owners who purchase their timeshares on the resale market, intentionally devaluing your timeshare while also making it harder for you to unload. Only sign an agreement offering you real protections in your timeshare exit. Specifically, any agent you hire should be aligned with your interests, agreeing in writing to cover all timeshare fees – or legal fees - that arise during the exit process for a flat fee. Research your exit company’s credentials (through the Better Business Bureau, the state’s attorney general, consumer protection agencies and a general internet search) looking for a minimum
five-year track record of success. Beware of companies that make it hard for you to research them. Be wary of timeshare exit companies boasting “attorneys on staff.” Those attorneys will be acting in the best interests of the company, not yours. If an exit deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of phone solicitors telling you someone has a buyer, anyone advising you to stop paying your timeshare mortgage or maintenance fees, “donate your timeshare” programs, or anyone marketing a guaranteed timeframe for the exit. These are all red flags. For more tips and insights, visit myexitguide.com to download a free copy of “The Consumer’s Guide to Timeshare Exit,” a recently updated guide created to help consumers avoid scams when ending their timeshare ownership. Or call 888-344-9776. If your timeshare has become more of a liability than a joy, you’re not alone. But don’t get burned. Take steps to part ways with your timeshare efficiently, safely and with care. (StatePoint)

How to Rekindle the Romance in Your Marriage
W
hether you’re a honeymooner or you’re celebrating your 50th anniversary, there’s a chance that the romantic spark that brought you and your partner together in the first place needs to be rekindled. Experts say that a continually fulfilling relationship requires establishing and maintaining a complete connection. “Marriage is more than a wedding and a license, it’s a psychological, emotional and spiritual sense of connection,” says Dr. Frederick D. Mondin, a marriage counselor, human sexuality professor and author of the new book, “Erotic Love & Marriage: Improve Your Sex Life and Emotional Connection,” which offers insights on the issues that almost every relationship struggles with, as well as solutions that highlight connection, communication and exploration.
Dr. Mondin is sharing tips and insights to all couples seeking to connect or re-connect with one another. Keep dating: No matter how busy you become, you should never stop having the kind of fun you had when you were courting. Whether it’s hiking beautiful trails, going to concerts, or giving and attending parties, these activities should be carried into any long-term relationship if you intend to have a meaningful romantic life together and a healthy emotional connection. Take each other seriously: Don’t allow gender stereotypes to lead you to discount each other’s feelings or opinions as irrational. You’ll communicate more effectively, and be happier as a result,
if you listen to your partner and take him or her seriously. In other words, there should be no “boss” in the marriage. Work at maintaining a peer relationship. Ritualize contact time: Couples need ritualized contact time in which they get together, such as going to lunch once a week, having coffee together in the morning or watching a television program they both like. This is one of the most important components of having a close, emotionally intimate relationship. Speak the language of love: Emotional intimacy has its own language, the language of endearment. Focus on all the right features of your partner — the personal qualities you saw when you first met and still appreciate, and
start to verbalize that information. If your partner reciprocates, it will create a feeling of closeness. These words don’t have to be rational or logical, but they should always be a validation of the relationship and your partner. Lose your inhibitions: Be open with each other about everything — including sex. Unfortunately, lingering guilt, fear and shame on this topic prevent many couples from being candid with one another. Learn to lose those inhibitions so that you can share your needs, desires, feelings and concerns. Give each other space: You don’t need to do everything together to have a happy relationship. In fact, the happiest couples tend to give each other the support and space needed to maintain their independent interests. You don’t have to resign yourself to receding happiness as time passes. A challenge of your current beliefs can help you rekindle the spark and enjoy a closer, more meaningful relationship. (StatePoint)

Puzzles & Horoscopes Need to double check? Find the answers on page 15 CROSSWORD THEME: POPULAR PASTIMES
HOROSCOPES ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) With Mars, warrior planet of the cosmos returning to Aries in the New Year, 2019 is set to begin in a passionate and accelerated way. Even on the professional front, as the Moon wraps up its last visit to your career sector for the year, the message is to take a wait and see approach. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) When Venus left your work sector, she may have brought all the planetary activity in your two professional houses for the year to a close. As the Moon returns for both its last visit to your career sector for the year and first since Mars left, there is a need to have all your antennas up, focused on receiving as much information as possible. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Adventurous lunar vibes, which kick in on at the same time that Mars moves into his final three weeks in your career sector and just as the pace is picking up across the income, work and career fronts. Yet the Moon brings two important messages. The first is that life can’t be all work and no play and the second is that professionally and financially, it is still all about the journey. CANCER (June 22-July 22) If the Moon pushes some buttons in its final hours in your relationship sector, then it is doing its job. This would have been the case even if the lunar nodes weren’t now policing a need for balance between your personal and relationship needs. Before the solar spotlight even shifts onto your relationships, you’re aware of what you want from your relationships. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) As Mars moves into his final three weeks in your financial sector, he is taking advantage of Chiron’s direct turn here over the weekend. With nothing holding things back and the money gods no longer interested in where you have been. If you’ve been thinking of financial resolutions for the New Year, Mars, warrior planet of the cosmos is no longer prepared to wait. The time to take your financial power back is now. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) There is a very real chance to make 2019 the year you finally take your financial power back. Yet with Uranus spending the rest of this year in retrograde motion in your financial sector, it is all about looking back. It looks like the key to taking your financial power back moving forward, is to first understand where you’ve been. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) It was Chiron’s direct turn that released the
12
handbrake and turned the lights green. This creates the potential for an exciting and fast paced end to the year across the income, work and career fronts, but also a busy three weeks. At work or whatever it is in life that keeps you busy, the playful lunar vibes return with an important message. That message ‘life can’t be all work and no play’. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) With Mars seeing out the year in a fun, playful, romantic and creative way, had you tried to make life all work and no play, the warrior planet of the cosmos would have fought back. Yet this is still something to be mindful of. For with Mars returning to your work sector on New Year’s Day and Uranus turning direct just days later, 2019 will get off to a busy start. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Take matters of the heart and all things fun, playful, romantic and creative for example. With Uranus turning direct in a playful part of your chart in the New Year, the early two months of 2019 should be exciting. However, with Mars returning on New Year’s Day there is no doubt they will be. Already there is a need to take all things fun, playful, romantic and creative seriously. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) While you don’t want to create challenges where there are none, as Mars moves into his final three weeks in your communication sector, this is an invitation for the warrior planet of the cosmos to get involved. With support across the communication, friendship and relationship building fronts, these conditions are ripe with the potential for a breakthrough. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) Venus has returned to a mission to fuel your professional confidence, attract opportunities and steer things in a lucrative direction that she had put on hold. If Venus can point the final weeks of this professional year in a lucrative direction, Mars can take it from there. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Mars knows that once he leaves in the New Year he won’t be back until 2020, with the passions and fighting spirit he is fuelling now, needing to see you all the way through 2019. The second thing that Mars knows for sure is that there are forces in play across the solar system that will keep your dreams, passion and weekend spirit fuelled for as long as you want them to.
