Weekly publication of Stafford paper to end This week’s edition of the InsideNoVa/ North Stafford newspaper is the final edition of the paper that began as the Stafford County Sun in 1990. “Unfortunately, economic conditions have required us to take a different approach in covering the North Stafford community,” said Bruce Potter, publisher of InsideNoVa and chief operating officer of parent company Rappahannock Media LLC. InsideNoVa plans to introduce a new

product focused on North Stafford in early 2020 and will continue to cover North Stafford news online at InsideNoVa.com. The web site has over 500,000 unique visitors a month and 92,000 Facebook fans. Rappahannock Media bought the Stafford County Sun in April 2015 from BH Media Group and changed the name to InsideNoVa/North Stafford the following year. BH Media acquired the paper when it purchased virtually all of Media General Inc.’s newspapers in 2012.

the horse were invading their surroundings. I took up the farmer’s cause because the distance between the horse and the houses seemed to me too far for the odor to travel, and it was difficult to believe that any red-blooded fly would leave a long-time Stafford resident four-legged gourmet dinner for some skinny twolegged newly arrived snack. We gained some support, but the newcomers’ position prevailed, and the horse was moved to Spotsylvania County family grounds. What I learned from that little controversy was that in Stafford we could disagree and move on when a decision was reached -- a sign of a healthy community. Through the years, other controversies came and went -- some resolved, others not. Stafford continued to grow into an increasingly diverse population in people, politics and values. This growth provided unlimited opportunities for column topics and subjects like the BPOL, school bus seatbelts, Interstate 95, U.S. Route 1, school board issues, American Legion baseball, elections, school zone speeding violations, FAMPO, SOLs, the environment, county landfill issues, student use of cell phones, and countless other topics. I am deeply grateful to my long-time

editor, Aleks Dolzenko, and more recently Greg Hambrick for their guidance, demand for accuracy, and patience. I am equally grateful to the paper’s publisher, Bruce Potter, for providing a reporting and writing atmosphere of openness and honesty, and for providing a newspaper dedicated to Stafford and its people. Above all, I am grateful to the people of Stafford for their acceptance of my thoughts and views. I’ve been invited to write for the new format when it debuts in 2020 and IT SEEMS TO ME…I’ll continue to do my best to bring issues of interest and importance to neighbors and friends in Stafford. Until we meet again, may your holidays and holy days be times of personal renewal and joy, and may the new year bring you all you wish for to enjoy in a world filled with peace. That was a fine idea, but the Germans weren’t giving them enough to eat as it was, and the idea of a Christmas cake seemed far fetched. However, they had a professional baker in the camp, and at his direction, for several weeks in advance of Christmas they saved their breadcrumbs and their sugar in hopes of making a cake. The product of their efforts, at least from one description, seems to have resembled unleavened bread more than a cake. The cake, alas, wasn’t very large, and each man’s portion was probably only teaspoon sized, but it was, according to one account, “simply delicious” and the men made it the center of a day long festivity. There wasn’t a feast, but the general and Mrs. Washington still made it an event. Civilians could also find themselves in a tough spot when it came to Christmas dinner in wartime. In Britain during WWII, food was severely rationed. One in 10 homes had been destroyed by bombing. But they did have one thing. The United States, through “Lend Lease,” sent the British an American product called “Spam.” Spam is made from pork and pork by-products and is still in most every grocery store today. It goes great with scrambled eggs, but it was a staple for the Brits during the war. In 1941, an enterprising group of British housewives had some fun and in the midst of the Blitz and the shortages crafted a Christmas turkey composed entirely of spam. It was still spam, it tasted like spam, but it looked like a turkey and the newspapers in war ravaged Britain had a good time with the story. It would be wonderful if one day our young men and women didn’t have to celebrate their Christmases in far away and dangerous places. That hope is something we should remember when we all sit down for our own Christmas dinner this week. Voters back gun control measures in new poll In contrast to the large crowds calling for local Second Amendment resolutions, Virginia voters appear to strongly support new gun control measures ahead of the new legislative session in January. According to a new poll out from the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University, voters also support passing the Equal Rights Amendment, increasing the minimum wage and decriminalizing marijuana possession. Democrats will be taking control of both houses of the General Assembly next month, making it easier for a wide range of measures that have faced GOP roadblocks in the past. “This survey suggests there’s pent-up

demand among voters for a lot of the Democrats’ policy agenda,” Wason Center Director Quentin Kidd said in a news release. “There’s pent-up demand in the Democrats’ caucus, too, and it will be revealing to see what legislation the new majority prioritizes now that they’re in power.” Voters strongly support requiring background checks on all gun sales, 86% to 13%, and passing a ‘red flag’ law to remove guns from an owner who may harm someone, 73% to 23%, according to the poll results. A slight majority, 54% to 44%, support banning assault-style weapons. Among other results: • Voters strongly back the Equal Rights Amendment (80%-13%).

• A slight majority oppose giving localities authority to remove or alter Confederate monuments (51%-44%). • Voters strongly support decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana (83%-14%). • Voters strongly support raising the minimum wage (72%-28%) • Voters strongly support automatic voter registration (64%-31%), and noexcuse absentee voting (74%-23%) • Voters strongly support passage of the redistricting reform constitutional amendment (70%-15%). The Wason Center conducted 901 interviews of registered Virginia voters, Nov. 11-22. The margin of error for the survey is +/- 3.4 %.

Church pays of $18,000 in lunch debt JULIA LEDOUX » BY FOR INSIDE NOVA

A recent donation by members of The Mount Ararat Church has helped relieve the school lunch debt of some families in Stafford and Spotsylvania counties. Lead Pastor Todd Gaston said the church was able to cancel nearly $18,000 worth of school lunch debt with a recent donation. Around $8,000 of that money completely wiped out school lunch debt in Spotsylvania County, he said. In Stafford County, the church was able to contribute nearly $10,000 for students at Park Ridge, Kate Waller Barrett, Anne E. McClure and Winding Creek elementary schools. “I’m so proud of our church and the people because they are the ones that are giving in a consistent way, in a generous way, and they are the ones believing in the mission of what we are doing, that we are for the community, we are for Spotsylvania and Stafford,” Gaston said. The church “tithed the tithes” it receives from its members to generate the funds that were used to pay down the school lunch debt, he said. “We want to make sure that 10% of the income we receive from the body goes outside the walls of the church,” Gaston said. A recent Facebook post by Pastor Jerry Williams, who along with Pastor Andrew Segre spearheaded the donation effort, went viral.

Mount Ararat Church has received attention for a recent donation to pay off student lunch debt in the region. It’s one of several community projects the church is proud of. “So many times churches are known for what they are against,” says Pastor Andrew Saegre. “We want to be known for what we are for.” PROVIDED

“It was just an off-the-cuff post we made,” he explained. “Folks have really been encouraged by us giving back.” Williams made the video before dropping off the checks to the schools as a way to encourage others to “pay it forward.” “So many times churches are known for what they are against,” Segre said. “We want to be known for what we are for.”

Gaston said the church prays throughout the year about tangible steps that it can take to tackle problems not only in the community but around the world. “We believe we have found forgiveness and freedom,” he said. ‘That freedom is leading us to love our community.” Every school year, The Mount distributes backpacks filled with school supplies

to nearly 600 needy families. “It’s created a great relationship with schools,” Gaston said. Spotsylvania Schools spokesperson Rene Daniels said food insecurity continues to be an issue for many families. “Throughout the year, community partners like Mount Ararat Church donate funds to offset school lunch debt,” she said. “We received their donation prior to the Thanksgiving holiday and in less than a month the lunch debt is back up to over $5,000. We are extremely thankful the partnership with Mount Ararat Church and for their generous donation of more than $6,500 towards our student’s lunch debt.” Stafford County Schools spokesperson Sherrie Johnson said the system is “appreciative of community partners such as Mount Ararat Church that support students and staff. The collaboration and support help to make the school division successful.” In addition to tithing, church members also join together to provide Thanksgiving turkeys and other necessities to those in need throughout the year. “We want to always find ways to make a difference” said Gaston. In February, the church will hold a prom for individuals with special needs in partnership with the Tim Tebow Foundation. “We want to serve outside the walls,” Gaston said. The Mount began in 1907. About 3.500 people attend services each week in both Stafford and Spotsylvania.

Woman, four abducted children sought

The Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a woman who abducted her four children. The investigation began in early June 2019 when a woman identified as Melody Bannister, 34, of Stafford informed deputies that her four children were being abused by a family member, SCSO spokesperson Amanda Vicinanzo said. The allegations were determined to be unfounded, she said. After the investigation, Bannister left Virginia with the children on a planned vacation and never returned. The Stafford County Juvenile Domestic & Relations Court granted custody of the children to their father in July, but Bannister refused to return the children and subsequently petitioned the courts in Alabama

requesting custody, Vicinanzo said. The courts in Alabama heard the case and also ordered Bannister to return her children to their father back in Virginia. Bannister fled the state of Alabama with her four children and has not been seen since, Vicinanzo said. She is currently wanted for one felony charge of violation of a court order and four misdemeanor charges of abduction and one misdemeanor charge of filing a false police report. The children have been identified as Genevieve Bannister, 13; Janelle Bannister, 12; Vivienne Bannister, 11; and Peter Bannister, 7. The U.S. Marshals Service and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children became involved in the investigation several months ago. Banister and

Oh, Christmas tree

As I sit watching Weeble, our little, crazy adolescent kitten bounce around, I sing to myself. “Oh, Christmas tree, oh, Christmas tree, your ornaments are history!” Before we moved to Virginia, our little, feral kitten, Loki, hid in the upper branches of our live tree. When I came home from work, she startled and launched herself from the glittering Frasier fir. Down it came. That night, my beloved husband tethered the tree into a corner of the room. My old Hunter loved to steal ornaments that looked like balls. Then he and Worf, our largest cat, would play together. In a pet’s eyes, Christmas trees are neat toys. Things to bat, branches to climb, hanging balls for a possible game of fetch – oh what joy, and danger. Tinsel (also called icicles) and garland made from short pieces of the glittering strands should not be on trees if you have pets. If ingested they can cause intestinal damage and blockage. Chewed ornaments, especially glass ones, lead to cut mouths and worse if swallowed. Stepped on shards may result in foot damage. Never assume your pet will not chew or eat any decorations on your tree. Strands of lights pose electrocution hazards if chewed. Even if there is no shock to your pet, damaged wires are a fire hazard. Trees can be climbed, pulled or knocked over.

Here are a few things to consider as you set up your Christmas Tree. Let’s begin with reducing the chance trees will go from vertical to horizontal. Start at the bottom. Many artificial trees and stands meant for live trees do not have a wide footprint. Smaller bases increase the chance of a tree tipping over. Lighter trees are easier to tip. If possible, purchase a wide, heavy base. My personal favorite for live trees, after having many stands over the years, is cast iron with a wide base. With artificial trees, if there are holes in the legs of the base, secure it to a plywood square. Bags of sand can be placed over the legs to add weight. Now move upwards. If the location of the tree permits, you can do what my husband did and tether it into a corner with strong fishing line or thin cable running to each wall. Think about what decorations you use. Many can be hazardous to pets. Look for safer alternatives to tinsel and frilly garlands. Put breakable decorations out of reach or opt to use baubles that are harder to damage. If your children make salt dough ornaments, the high amount of salt can make pets sick. Keep them well out of reach. If you hang candy canes, read the ingredients carefully. Some are made with Xylitol which is toxic in small amounts to pets. Check light cords for signs of chewing.

Often it is easier to prevent access to your trees. Baby gates, closed doors, or portable dog kennels (often called exercise pens or ex-pens) placed around the tree decrease the chance of the tree becoming a toy. There are more attractive barriers you can purchase that look like picket fences or painted screens. Finally, provide and encourage the

use of better toys. Interactive toys that release food, catnip toys, things to chase, etc., may reduce the attraction of the tree. Pets often go for what gives the most fun. Wishing you a safe holiday season. Karen Peak is the developer of The Safe Kids/Safe Dogs Project and owner/operator of West Wind Dog Training in Prince William County.
