Madison Lyublanovits, a fifth-grader at Covington-Harper Elementary School, wrote the book after her mother recovered from breast cancer.
Fifth-grader writes book about her mother having breast cancer BY GIANNA JIRAK For InsideNoVa
In May 2019, Shon Lyublanovits, a mother of three, was diagnosed with stage one invasive ductal carcinoma – a common form of breast cancer. After chemotherapy, radiation, and hair loss, she recovered, but entering remission didn’t remove all the pain from Lyublanovits’ life. Her youngest child, Madison, a fifth-grader at Covington-Harper Elementary School in Prince William County and a competitive dancer, still had pent-up feelings from the experience. “My daughter-in-law had quite a few conversations with Madison and said, ‘Hey Shon, I think you need to talk to her, she’s dealing with something,’” said Lyublanovits, who works as a senior advisor for cybersecurity for the General Services Administration. Their talks began as short conversations, with Lyublanovits asking about Madison’s feelings, and Madison not wanting to talk about the subject. But after a while, there was a breakthrough, and from those many emotional conversations a book was born. “Ok Mommy, I Will Help You: Oh No! My Mom Has Breast Cancer!” is a children’s picture book completely based off of Madison’s experiences, and written by her. According to Lyublanovits, writing the book was a form of therapy for Madison, aiding her in healing from the painful experience of her mother suffering from breast cancer. “Everything’s literally verbatim. I think she held a lot of that stuff in and wasn’t really sure how to process it all. So putting that book together helped with that,” Lyublanovits said. The book follows the pointof-view of Savannah, a stand-in character for Madison, accompanied by a stuffed monkey named

WHERE TO FIND THE BOOK
“Ok Mommy, I Will Help You: Oh No! My Mom Has Breast Cancer!” is available in paperback at verkallosmedia. com and Amazon for $18.99. It is also available in Kindle format on Amazon for $9.99. Mollie, as she finds out about her mother’s breast cancer, watches her go through chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and learns how to help her around the house. At the end of the book, Savannah talks directly to the reader about how to help their parents if they are ever diagnosed with breast cancer, telling them things like “Tell her you love her, a LOT” and “Don’t treat her differently.” Lyublanovits created a company, VerKallos Media Group, to publish the book, which was released Oct. 1. About 60 copies of the book have been sold. One reviewer on Amazon wrote, “The story was heartwarming and pulled you into the child's life. … I would highly recommend this book to children of family members that are going through difficult circumstances that are no one’s fault and others who have felt that they were alone in this battle.” Lyublanovits and Madison plan to expand past this one story. Lyublanovits plans to offer scholarships and is planning a national “I Dance for You Day,” in which dancers perform in support of those fighting breast cancer. Madison also has more stories in the works, with a new book, “Gracie and Gavin,” which follows two second-graders as they navigate things like virtual learning, being released in the upcoming months. But for now, Madison is content with being one of the youngest authors published to date. “I think it’s kind of a world record in my book,” she said.
What to expect during your first mammogram Demystifying the annual breast screening process One in eight women in the United States is at risk of developing breast cancer, according to the Society of Breast Imaging. The good news? Early screening with mammography detects breast cancer when it’s more likely curable. “Screening is used to detect changes in the breast in women who have no signs or symptoms or new breast abnormalities,” said Maria Pace, MD, a Novant Health UVA Health System breast radiologist. “The goal is to detect cancer before clinical signs are noticeable. Breast cancer is one of the most treatable and survivable cancers if detected early.” What is a mammogram? A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breast, and the best way doctors have to find breast cancer early. During a screening exam, the imaging machine moves over the breast tissue in an arc to produce pictures. A radiologist then examines the images for abnormalities. What about 3D mammograms? 3D mammograms have been shown to detect 40 percent more cancer cases than the standard mammogram, according to a study reported in the
Journal of the American Medical Association. The newer technology allows providers to have better visibility and more accurately detect breast cancer. Women who would most greatly benefit from 3D mammography are those with dense breasts and those who have an increased risk of breast cancer. Research has shown that having dense breast tissue can increase the risk for developing breast cancer. When to start? Current recommendations suggest starting yearly mammograms at age 40, which has helped cut breast cancer deaths by more than 40%. Some women are at higher risk for developing breast cancer, including those with a family history of breast cancer. They may benefit from additional or earlier screening and should discuss options with their primary care doctor, Dr. Pace said. What to wear. Do not use deodorant, powder or lotion under your arms or on your breast before your mammogram. Wear a top that is easy to remove. You will need to undress from the waist up for the exam.
Do not assume it’s covered. With today’s high-deductible plans, insurance companies often treat mammogram screenings as preventive care, but not always. “Do not let inability to pay for the mammogram deter you from getting it,” Dr. Pace said. “We have resources to help.” Prince William County residents who are uninsured or concerned about cost can call 703-369-8421 to learn more about Novant Health UVA Health System mobile mammography unit events. During the screening While you’re wearing a front-opening gown, a technologist will position your breast on the machine. The technician will then use a plastic paddle to gradually spread out the breast tissue. You may be asked to hold your breath to minimize motion during the few seconds it takes to capture each image. Should you ask to sit? The procedure is commonly performed while standing. If you have difficulty standing or are susceptible to fainting, tell your technologist. After your screening If you are called back for additional views or an abnormal mammogram, this does not always mean that there

is cancer. Novant Health UVA Health System’s UVA fellowship-trained breast radiologists provide earlier detection, more accurate readings and fewer callbacks, but recalls may happen, especially after first-time screenings. It can depend on the breast tissue: With denser tissue, abnormalities can be more difficult to detect. “Mammography screens are done once a year,” Dr. Pace said. “For the benefit of your personal health – and for your family – it’s such an important thing that we can do for ourselves.” For more information about Novant Health UVA Health System’s breast imaging services, visit NovantHealthUVA.org/3dmammo.
A mammogram can detect a lump 2 to 3 years before you can Advanced, 3D digital imaging for breast health Having a yearly mammogram is crucial. 3D technology makes a mammogram even more precise — but only in the right hands. At Novant Health UVA Health System, our UVA fellowship-trained breast radiologists are able to provide earlier detection, more accurate readings, fewer callbacks and rule out cancer with greater confidence. Make your 3D mammogram appointment today, and let our team bring the best of health to you.

Rims of Awareness BY MARTI MOORE For InsideNoVa
For the fourth consecutive year, Haymarket Police Lt. J. Shaver (left) and Chief Kevin Lands installed pink rims on their cruisers to help drive breast cancer awareness. Lands held fundraisers for this cause in three pre-
vious years. He started with a breast cancer 5K walk in 2017, which had 30 participants — leading up to last year’s event that saw nearly 200 participants and raised more than $5,000 for a mobile mammography vehicle the Novant Health UVA Health System uses in three counties, including Prince
William. Lands’ mother fought breast cancer for two years until she died in 2014. Although COVID-19 canceled the 2020 Haymarket Police 5K walk,
Lands and his officers believe their pink tire rims, uniform badges and handcuffs are worthwhile if just one lady gets a mammogram.
Real Men Wear Pink Representatives of four local businesses have joined the American Cancer Society’s national online fund-raising campaign, Real Men Wear Pink. This distinguished group of community leaders is determined to raise awareness and money to support the American Cancer Society's mission and save more lives than ever before from breast cancer. Every dollar raised helps the American Cancer Society save lives from breast cancer through early detection and prevention, innovative
breast cancer research, and patient support. Thanks to the passion of our Real Men Wear Pink supporters, we're able to make a huge impact on the mission to end breast cancer. Among the participating businesses and their representatives are: • Brad Hockenberry of Windows and Siding Unlimited • John Marquess of Handyman Cans • J.R. Shop smart this October to benefit breast cancer patients It is not always easy to tell how your charitable dollars are going to be used, especially during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Honored every October, this is a time of year when many companies use pink logos on product packaging to symbolize support for breast cancer-related charities. Unfortunately, these symbols are not always backed by a promise that proceeds will directly support research or those living with breast cancer. In the case of Susan G. Komen and its Live Pink program, the organization works closely with all its partners to ensure program details are transparent to consumers. And this year, 18 companies are donating a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of select products to Komen. Because many consumers are doing much of their shopping online these days, Komen has created a site that makes it easy and safe to shop for a cause. Visit livepink.org to shop and learn more. “It just takes a moment to get involved and make a difference in the fight against breast cancer,” said Sarah Rosales, vice president of corporate partnerships, Susan G.

Komen. “We’re honored to have so many partners giving consumers an opportunity to support breast cancer patients and fund lifesaving research.” Want to ensure you are mak-
ing the biggest impact possible? Before making any purchase you assume benefits the fight against breast cancer, Susan G. Komen recommends asking the following questions:
POWER OF PINK | SURVIVING BREAST CANCER | OCTOBER 2020 | INSIDENOVA.COM
1. Who is the program supporting? Is it clear what charity is benefiting from the program? Susan G. Komen, for example, requires all of its partners to clearly state that their program benefits the organization. In many cases, they will include Komen’s iconic logo on their packaging. 2. How will the charity use the donation? It should be clear where the proceeds go. Look for programs that support organizations that take a 360-degree approach to fighting the disease by funding breakthrough research, supporting compassionate public policy and providing patient support. 3. How is the program structured? Transparency is key. Is the company clearly stating how the money is raised and how much will be going to charity? For example, if it’s a donation per purchase structure, ask how much of the purchase price benefits the charity. Is there a minimum or maximum contribution? Is it a flat donation regardless of sale? By shopping savvy this National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, you can ensure your purchases are making the biggest impact possible. – StatePoint

CARE IN THE TIME OF COVID-19
With the novel coronavirus now a part of our daily lives, we are faced with a level of uncertainty that was previously unimaginable. As a result, healthcare providers across the nation have seen an increase in the number of individuals delaying care and putting off preventative screenings that are so critical to identifying health problems early. We want you to feel safe at Sentara so there is nothing in between you and getting the best care possible. We are screening and masking everyone who comes to our facilities, wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, ensuring social distance and have increased our already robust cleaning for infection prevention. We are committed to always keeping our patients, employees and community members safe. EARLY DETECTION MEANS BETTER OUTCOMES
“One out of every eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime,” shares Dr. Jeffrey Sinclair, general surgeon with Sentara Surgery Specialists. “The American Cancer Society recently published a troubling study estimating the impact of delayed preventative screenings as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Early detection means better outcomes, and so we are working hard to reassure the community and get the message out that they should not delay their annual mammogram. Cancer doesn’t wait.” The Sentara Cancer Network focuses on early screening and detection using innovative technologies like 3D Mammography to catch breast cancer early. If results are abnormal, we provide you with timely accurate results. That means you don’t have to wait to know if there’s a problem, and treatment can begin immediately if a breast disease or cancer diagnosis is confirmed. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER
Whether you’re interested in genetic counseling to assess your breast cancer risk, or you need help coordinating your appointments, Sentara is with you every step of the way. Our entire care
team is there to help and support you and your family with any challenges you may face. Cindy Allen, Vice President, Sentara Cancer
Network, adds, “For all of your breast health needs, we provide collaborative care that is focused on you.”
