Classic attractions return to county fair BY JAYA PATIL

he 2022 Prince William County Fair celebrates its 73rd year with classic fun Aug. 1220, but some acts and events are back after long hiatuses.

The Butterfly Encounter is back after more than five years away, it has been at least 15 years since a national performer filled the grandstand, and the Miss Prince William County Fair Pageant returns ATTRACTIONS

after a 34-year absence. Prince William County Fair Director Chrissy Taylor is excited for the reappearance of elements that made an impression on her when she attended the fair as a young girl. For one, country music artist Tracy Byrd will perform at the grandstand on Thursday, Aug. 18. “I came to country concerts here at the fair as a kid. I think the last one … was Joe Nichols,” Taylor reminisced. The concert is a separate ticket, costing up to $40. The grandstand will open at 5:30 p.m., with Spencer Hatcher playing at 7 and Byrd taking the stage around 8:30. The grandstand will also be home to familiar attractions such as the tractor pull, demolition derby, monster truck show and rodeo. Grandstand tickets are $5 unless otherwise noted on the schedule (see Page 6 of this section). General admission tickets for the fair at the gate are $12 for adults and $8 for seniors and children over 4 years old, and ride wristbands range from $20-30. However, tickets are half price on Monday, free on Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and free for children on Wednesday. In addition, tickets are discounted for ’90s night on Thursday to match 1997 fair ticket prices ($10 for adults, $4 for children). “We are back [with] more entertainment … and contests than ever,” Taylor said, “We’ve tried to get as much community involvement as we possibly could.” The Demolition Derby has a new local producer this year, and the celestial Space Adventure Thrill show is a different routine from the fair veteran 3 Ring Super Circus producers. The new Sea Lion Splash adds to the history of animal exhibits at the fair, like stingrays and bears. A frozen t-shirt contest will cool things down on

After a five-year hiatus, the Butterfly Encounter will return to the Prince William County Fair this year.

Monday at 6 p.m., and a mullet contest will light it back up on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the show barn. While mullets make a comeback, some things remain important throughout the years. The fair started with a group of veterans sponsoring a dairy show in 1949 and it was funded during tough times by harvesting 47 acres of corn. “The fair was founded on agriculture. As Prince William County increasingly urbanizes, it’s important for us to keep letting families and children know where your food comes from and where this county came from,” Taylor said. In addition, she added, “It’s a family tradition. [For]

families in Prince William County, it’s a part of their lives.” Taylor’s grandfather was one of the fair founders, her mom showed cows at the fair with her parents and is now the fair manager, and Taylor competed in the fair pageants as a baby. Newcomers to the county are welcome to experience the diversity that is the largest county fair in Virginia. “I feel like we’ve struck that balance of having something for everyone,” Taylor said – from monster truck rides to a petting zoo. The fun transcends the schedule, so “you just got to show up there at the right time.”

Pageants return to fair after 34-year absence BY JAYA PATIL

his year’s Miss Prince William County Fair Pageant marks the end of a 34-year royal recess, and the pageant returns where it started: with locals. Mom-and-daughter pageant directors Mary Cooper and Kim Updyke have years of experience in the county and in pageantry. Cooper grew up in the county with the Prince William County Fair as part of her childhood, and Updyke’s pageant career started when she was just 18 months old. Updyke won Miss Virginia State Fair in 2000. The two became volunteer directors of the Fredericksburg Fair Pageant in 2002, where they remained for 17 years. After they left the Fredericksburg Fair Pageant, Updyke said, “We always knew that we wanted to direct another pageant, we just didn’t know where.” They crossed paths with Prince William County Fair directors Diane Burke and Chrissy Taylor at the Virginia Association of MARY COOPER Fairs’ annual conference in January. The mother-daughter duo noticed Prince William didn’t have a fair queen representative. Burke and Taylor were considering bringing the pageant back for the 2022 fair when Cooper and Updyke reached out. Directors had discontinued the pageants in the late 1980s because of lack of revenue. With the fair back full-throttle this year, Burke and Taylor set their sights on the competition. Of the many pageant systems, Updyke said, “The fair system is … a lot of community service – what [contestants have] done, what they’ve given back. That’s why we fell in love with the fair system. … [It’s] a place where you can begin.” The queen becomes the face of the fair – an archetype of community values, Updyke added. “It creates a representative for the fair. … I think having that representative is going to bring a fresh, new

Over $2,250 was donated for the 2022 Miss Prince William County Fair scholarships. The competition goes beyond a crown. “What we instill in these young ladies is something you can’t take away,” Cooper said. The event involves six to seven month of planning, Updyke said. “A lot of hours are dedicated to seeing this young lady excel and KIM UPDYKE bring her best self to a state competition.” Updyke and Cooper support the girls at every level – hair, makeup, interviews, communication, modeling. “We help each and every girl have the best experience they can possibly have,” Cooper said. The same girls often return each year, becoming family to Cooper and Updyke. “We have attended bridal showers [and] baby showers,” Updyke added. She is matron of honor in a former contestant’s upcoming wedding. Miss Prince William County Fair 1987 Queen Stephanie Streat will be among those returning to attend the pageant – properly ending the 34-year hiatus. This year’s Miss and Teen Miss Pageant contestants will introduce themselves and answer a question onstage. “That lets the judges and audience get to know them more, see how they think on their feet, how they communicate, [and] how they express their views,” Updyke said.

hen Jimmy Earhart’s family is on the road, they need their wallet, keys, thousands of gallons of water and plenty of fish. Earhart is used to traveling during his career in the circus, but what’s new is taking sea lions with him. When the circus wasn’t sustaining him, Earhart connected with Sea Lion Splash founder Marco Peters. Earhart began working with Peters, learned the ropes and eventually branched off to grow his own sea lion setup. Earhart joined the list of people who are qualified and willing to receive sea lions that can’t successfully be released into their natural habitat. They now have 10 sea lion rescues from the government.

for traveling to shows. They built a facility on 25 acres with a large barn and six inground pools – half of them indoor. They have three air-conditioned travel units rigged with a pool and a deck. The sea lions can rest in the water while traveling. “They’re a pretty lazy animal,” Earhart said. “They’ll lie up on the deck and let the air-conditioner hit them.” Sharing the personality of sea lions is part of Earhart’s Sea Lion Splash show. Earhart and his family sneak educational material in during the 25-minute entertaining, humorous show. They discuss the differences between sea lions and seals (hint: external ears and flipper length). The sea lions do the conga and handstands, wave and stick their tongues out, among other tricks. Sometimes the most surprising thing for audiences is the natural behaviors the sea lions exhibit. “It’s cool for some of these people who have never seen [one] that we’re able to bring sea lions to them,” Earhart said. “People don’t realize what a versatile animal it is,” he added – such as how well sea lions travel on land. While versatile, some of the sea lions are less performative on command – Syra is one of the comedic troublemakers. Some of the sea lions can’t perform because of impairments, so they remain in Texas and can serve as animal ambassadors. The Earharts built modifications so

they can accept any sea lions, including a handicap-accessible pool that’s easier to enter with a ramp. “It’s part of giving back to them as well,” Earhart said. Sometimes human behavior resulted in the impairments of the sea lions, so they serve as an example of the damage humans can do. Part of the Sea Lion Splash show is about teaching people “how they can help sea lions and marine mammals by doing simple, little things,” Earhart said. One of the most important: “Recycle your trash because a lot of it ends up in the ocean and they love to play with it,” he added. When the Earharts aren’t traveling to fairs and festivals, they’re training the sea lions at home and doing local school shows. They’ve even done some corporate and private events. It takes multiple people to feed their sea lion family. They realized they needed five walk-in freezers to keep up with fish storage. “[I’m] still learning every day. … I call it painful college,” Earhart laughed. Although he hasn’t had a vacation from the full-time responsibility in more than a decade, Earhart shares the life with his wife and six kids. His oldest son will be onsite with his team at the Prince William County Fair. Almost all of the kids help to care for their sea lion siblings – “The 1-year-old not so much, but she sees them every single day,” Earhart chuckled.
