Woodhouse Spa GAINESVILLE

Woodhouse SpaGainesville was established in 2020 and is owned and operated by Colleen Quintana and Walt Kuhn.

The 7,000-square-foot building consists of 14 treatment rooms, one main relaxation room, two private suites, and his-and-her lounges, making for a very welcoming, relaxing and calming space.

Colleen and Walt’s philosophy is “You have to do what you love.” Woodhouse Spa-Gainesville employs about 27 team members and treats all team members and guests as family. There is no age restriction on those who can receive a service; however, younger guests do require an adult consent.

Guests who come to the spa for the first time may already know what services they desire as they have already visited the website, woodhousegainesville. com, where location-specific services, pictures, videos and a blog waits for discovery.

Many guests have a goal they want to reach, and the highly skilled licensed massage therapists and master estheticians discuss treatment options. The spa concierge is an intricate part of the team, ensuring that each guest who walks through the door receives a five-star experience from the small details of the personalized touches to a

luxurious experience. A claw-foot bathtub and active halotherapy salt chamber are onsite as treatment options as well.

Upon arriving, each guest changes into a comfy spa robe and reflexology sandals and is provided a locker for their personal belongings while visiting. Athletes from all levels and individuals from young to old visit. Spa parties from bridal parties to birthdays to “just because” are offered onsite. Spa parties have the option of all-day packages that include custom catering or a simple glass of champagne.

Along with providing their guests with treatments, an onsite boutique is great for gift-giving as each purchase is wrapped and placed in a Woodhouse Spa gift bag. The boutique offers unique products from items that give back to farm animals to planting a tree for each item sold, and it supports artisans from around the United States by carrying their products. Gift cards are available for purchase in any dollar amount, all of which makes gift-giving easy, affordable and something that everyone will love.

Woodhouse Spa-Gainesville is open daily and offers tours to all who stop by and is in the Wegmans Shopping Center off Route 29. Colleen and Walt live in Haymarket and have two sons, one daughter and two dogs.

The Bluebird Tour Program

The Bluebird Tour Program was originally known as the Bluebird Bus Program. Anecdotally, it has been reported that it predates the Prince William Area Agency on Aging and has been in operation for about 40 years.

The original mission was to provide low-cost day-trip travel operations for older adults in Prince William County using a rented bus. There were few travel agencies in the county at the time.

When the Agency on Aging was formed in 1976, the Bluebird Bus Program was added to its duties. The mission then was to offer low-cost day-trip travel opportunities to meal participants and later to those who are at the senior centers, once the centers were built. Buses were rented.

The program evolved over the years to include overnight trips, some lasting 10 days to two weeks. A bus was first purchased in 1980. It was sold and replaced in 1990, and this bus was sold and replaced in 1999. In 2007, due to the recession and the need to reduce county general fund spending, by Board of County Supervisors resolution, the Bluebird Tour Program was changed. Some of the changes included:

• Selling the bus

• Contracting with a commercial carrier for operating and planning the trips

• Patrons paying the full cost of their trips

• Separating the Bluebird Travel Advisory Committee from the Prince William Commission on Aging, creating a voluntary, self-elected advisory committee to the agency

The Bluebird Tour Program remains a discretionary recreation program. There is no question that the Bluebirds benefit from the socialization and fun they have on the trips – this is something the agency supports.

No other jurisdiction in Northern Virginia has a program like this. There is no other Area Agency on Aging in Virginia with a program like this.

Barrel Oak Winery & Brewery

Have you heard about the amazing fine wines and brews at Barrel Oak Winery & Brewery in Delaplane?

It’s quickly becoming the most talked about spot for delicious reds, refreshing whites and top-notch beer. When the Bajaj family took over the winery in 2022, they set out to make the best wine in Virginia and have been working toward that goal ever since.

Located in the beautiful Piedmont region of Virginia, this 30-acre vineyard offers a wide variety of traditional Vitis vinifera and American French hybrid grapes.

Winemaker Jeremy Ligon crafts 10 vegan varietals, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Manseng, Petit Verdot, Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, Traminette and Chambourcin, as well as Virginia’s premier native grape, Norton. They use oak barrels from France to ensure the quality of their wines.

Barrel Oak isn't just known for their fine wine, but also for the inventive flavors crafted at their brewery. Led by John Bowman, they offer a range of unique and award-winning beers. From smoky Chocolate Lab Porter Ale to El Jefe Mango with a spicy kick, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Garnering national recognition, Barrel Oak has been honored with dozens of awards, including a Gold medal in the prestigious Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition – the largest wine competition for East Coast Wines – for their new release, 2022 Sauvignon Blanc. They received Gold for the 2022 Bowhaus White at the 2023 San Francisco International Wine Competition (SFIWC), and a Best in Class Award for the 2021 Seyval Blanc, among countless others.

The brewery has also made its mark, earning the Best of the Southeast Region 2024 for three beers from the United States Beer Tasting Championship. Experience quality and craftsmanship at your next visit to Barrel Oak. Sample popular new releases and enjoy guided tastings, fresh hot pizza and food trucks on your visit. Private cellar tours are hosted on Fridays and Sundays, exploring the process from vineyard to bottle. Enjoy the Forest for the Trees

Conway Robinson State

Forest

is a hidden jewel in Prince William County

If you have driven Interstate 66 or Route 29 in Gainesville, you may recall passing a big sign announcing, “Conway Robinson State Forest.”

Although the state forest sits across from a commuter lot, it offers a treed oasis that can seem miles from the hubbub of daily commuters, weekend shoppers and busy suburban life.

And while the Manassas Battlefield Park to the northeast offers open fields, Conway Robinson is really a forest, a serene and wooded sanctuary with 440 acres of trails, trees and wildlife. It is a nature preserve close to home.

Entering the parking lot, one is immediately greeted by tall trees and the sounds of birds chirping. It feels cool in the shade, and everything is verdant. It looks like summer camp, and you feel like an explorer.

It’s time to select your path. Visitors can choose from five well-marked multi-use trails of varying distances and terrain that traverse several intermittent and perennial streams. Most trails are ideal for easy-tomoderate hikes. Some are also ideal for trail running, mountain biking or horseback riding. The trails overlook each other, so a map or trail guide app is useful.

Along the way, you will encounter an array of greenery, hardwoods and pines, as well as attractive wildflowers. The forest also hosts mature oaks dating back to colonial times of early settlements and small farms.

Like the Manassas Battlefield, the property is living history. Little Bull Run bounds the forest to the north. One can also find remnants of the abandoned railroad bed, part of the uncompleted Manassas Gap Railroad, originally planned as a route from Gainesville to Alexandria.

Today, we feel fortunate to have the peaceful parcel existing where so many trees are being cut down to make way for development. Ironically, the Virginia Department of Forestry hesitated to accept the property as a gift in the 1930s when Gainesville was mainly farms.

“The belief [was] that no one would ever use it,” said Jack Kauffman, northern state forests manager for the department. “At the time of the gift, Lee Highway [Route 29] was a singletrack dirt road that was difficult to traverse, particularly in wet weather. Now, the area is one of the highest populated areas in Virginia.”

The property officially became a

state forest in 1938, deeded by the Conway Robinson Memorial Park Association in memory of the late Conway Robinson. He was a renowned Virginia lawmaker, attorney and historian in the 19th century.

After acquiring the property from Robinson’s daughter, the forest department planted white pines and loblolly pines to fill land that had been farmed or harvested for its wood.

Conway Robinson is often overshadowed by the battlefield and Prince William Forest Park, but Kauffman said the park is “a very popular recreation area for walkers, runners, bikers and horseback riding.”

The small forest is ideal for a short getaway. Visitors can enjoy a quick hike or bike after work, and often still make it home before dark. They can take the kids, their friends or their dog.

Haymarket resident Lea Pagliuca has frequented the park for about 14 years and recommends it to her neighbors.

“It is close. It’s convenient. It is a nice walk for the dogs; the trail we do is about 3.25 miles,” she said. “We usually try to get there by 9 [a.m.], and it is not too crowded, so it is quiet and sometimes you can see

some deer. We have also seen foxes. It is a really nice walk.”

Other local residents visit the park to walk, run or spend time in nature.

“I walk my dog Muffin there several times a week,” said Randy Pitts of Bristow. “We love the trails. It’s nice to have a genuine forest so close to home.”

WANT TO GO?

Parking is available at the main entrance on the north side of Route 29, slightly more than a mile west of the Manassas National Battlefield Park, and 1,500 feet east of the intersection of Route 29 and Interstate Route 66. There are no restrooms or running water on site, and visitors are reminded to “leave no trace.”

Virginia Scenic Railway in Staunton a hit with riders

Ask 87-year-old Jimmy Baird of Bealeton when he first fell in love with trains, and you may not get a straight answer.

“I can’t remember when I wasn’t,” he said.

As director of the Piedmont Railroader, a Warrenton-based group of railroad enthusiasts, Baird loves to talk about railroads big and small. He and his son even operate a scenic railroad that carries tourists on twiceweekly excursions through picturesque farmland outside of Frederick, Md.

“Scenic trains are good for the local economy,” Baird said. “Tourists stay in local hotels. They buy things in local shops… and eat at local restaurants.”

Baird has ridden more than a dozen scenic railways across the country, but, unfortunately, they are almost like an endangered species. “We’ve seen so many come and go,” he said. “The truth is it’s a very difficult thing to do right.”

So, father and son were delighted to hear about the opening of the state’s newest scenic railroad in 2022 – the Virginia Scenic Railway, which operates from the Staunton Amtrak station.

“It’s absolutely wonderful, the best thing that could happen, that we have one close by,” Baird said.

THE MASTERMIND

Down in Staunton, Steve Powell, president of the 275-mile Buckingham Branch Railroad, a freight line based in Dillwyn in southern Virginia, is living his dream.

Not terribly thrilled with the model trains his dad built for him as a child, he preferred to accompany him to work. “My Dad worked for CSX. I got to ride up front with the engineer. It was a whole different world,” he recalled.

Now, with a Virginia Tech degree in mechanical engineering, Powell says he has “real trains to play with.” Aside

from Buckingham Branch, Powell is also the entrepreneur behind the Virginia Scenic Railway.

Powell’s goal was to create a unique experience combining the thrill of a train ride with breathtaking scenery of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains and an upscale dining experience – all in a cozy, nostalgic railway passenger car departing from the historic mid-19th century Amtrak station.

“It all goes back to the view,” Powell said. “When you’re on a train, you go over bridges. You go through tunnels. Sometimes you have to go on a siding and wait for another train to pass you, and that train comes so close to you can’t believe the trains aren’t touching. You get to appreciate the incredible engineering that has gone into building the railroad.”

It took two years to restore a 1940 Budd Company stainless steel 34-seat dining car with cherry and maple wood trim. “I wanted American wood.

I wanted the inside to feel comforting,” he said. He found a General Motors GP38 Norfolk Southern diesel locomotive to pull the car.

The passenger rail cars are historic, but they have been retrofitted and modernized with all the 21st-century conveniences visitors are used to. Expect ultra-comfortable seats, exceptional service, modern restrooms and Wi-Fi.

Above all else, Powell did not want anyone on the three-hour trip to be bored. The staff is trained to tell stories, not only about the railroad but also about the towns and places they pass.

And there would be no pokey train rides on Powell’s watch. After riding other scenic trains for comparison, he said, “They went too slow. There is a unique feeling of motion when you’re on a train. Ten miles, 15 miles an hour is boring. Any train on my line would have to go at least 25 miles per hour.”

And considering that eating on a train is part of the entertainment, he

wanted the food and service to be as good as possible. Visitors choose from sandwiches, salads and soups as well as classic desserts and non-alcoholic beverages.

THE PASSENGERS

From the day conductor Travis Carter called out his first “All aboard!,” tickets sold fast.

The train does two different excursions each day, with the train passing so close to cliffs and rock cuts that you feel you could almost touch them. The westbound Goshen excursion is the more restful, showing off the rural splendor of the Shenandoah Valley. The eastbound trip to Ivy swoops through the Little Rock Tunnel and the nearly-mile-long Blue Ridge Tunnel built by Claudius Crozet.

The excursions are fun for any age. “We’ve had folks celebrate anniversaries and birthdays. We’ve celebrated with toddlers all the way up to one fellow who was over 100,” Carter said.

And people are thrilled with the experience. “We were blown away,” said Linda Trainum of Waynesboro, who took an excursion with her husband. “Everything was spotless and shiny.

26 SUMMER 2024 •

The service was excellent. The food was delicious, and the scenery was gorgeous. Virginia Scenic Railway hit it out of the park in every single way.”

Powell has his eye on additional routes and scenic railways throughout Virginia. “This train has been more successful than we believed,” he said. “I can’t wait to see where it’s going to take us.”

All aboard!
