The Bluebird Tour Program
The Bluebird Tour Program was originally known as the Bluebird Bus Program. Anecdotally, it has been reported that it predates the Prince William Area Agency on Aging and has been in operation for about 40 years.
The original mission was to provide low-cost day-trip travel operations for older adults in Prince William County using a rented bus. There were few travel agencies in the county at the time.
When the Agency on Aging was formed in 1976, the Bluebird Bus Program was added to its duties. The mission then was to o er low-cost day-trip travel opportunities to meal participants and later to those who are at the senior centers, once the centers were built. Buses were rented.
The program evolved over the years to include overnight trips, some lasting 10 days to two weeks. A bus was first purchased in 1980. It was sold and replaced in 1990, and this bus was sold and replaced in 1999. In 2007, due to the recession and the need to reduce county general fund spending, by Board of County Supervisors resolution, the Bluebird Tour Program was changed. Some of the changes included:
• Selling the bus
• Contracting with a commercial carrier for operating and planning the trips
• Patrons paying the full cost of their trips
• Separating the Bluebird Travel Advisory Committee from the Prince William Commission on Aging, creating a voluntary, self-elected advisory committee to the agency
The Bluebird Tour Program remains a discretionary recreation program. There is no question that the Bluebirds benefit from the socialization and fun they have on the trips – this is something the agency supports.
No other jurisdiction in Northern Virginia has a program like this. There is no other Area Agency on Aging in Virginia with a program like this.

Virginia’s 43rd State Park Encompasses Historic Battlefield Lands
Culpeper Battlefields State Park was dedicated June 8, 2024, as Virginia’s 43rd state park. The new park will enable visitors to experience more than 2,200 acres of historic battlefield land, after a series of land transfers occurring between June 2024 and December 2027. These properties were preserved by the American Battlefield Trust and Brandy Station Foundation, in partnership with the commonwealth of Virginia, and include parts of the four major Civil War battles fought in Culpeper County: Brandy Station, Cedar Mountain, Kelly’s Ford and Rappahannock Station.
“Virginia’s 43rd state park stands as a powerful reminder of our nation’s history and the importance of preserving that history for future generations, because we can’t know where we’re going and unless we know where we’re coming from,” said Gov. Glenn Youngkin. “Culpeper Battlefields State Park connects us to our past and inspires us as we march together into our future. Visitors from all over will be able to appreciate the beauty of nature and reflect on the enduring spirit of resilience and unity that defines us.”
Visitors to the park can explore its history through interpretive walking and equestrian trails, along with guided tours available through local tour organizations and convenient mobile apps. Recreational activities may eventually include boating, camping and public programming.
Creation of the park in the heart of the Virginia Piedmont was approved by the Virginia General Assembly and signed into law by Youngkin in June 2022 as part of the commonwealth’s two-year budget plan. Virginia has set aside additional funds to acquire 800 more acres of historic land to augment the park.
Four significant Civil War battles took place on the land that will ultimately make up Culpeper Battlefields State Park:
Battle of Cedar Mountain, Aug. 9, 1862: In the summer of 1862, Major General John Pope was given command of the newly constituted Union Army of Virginia. His task was to defend Washington and Northern Virginia from Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s forces while Major Gen. George B. McClellan battled Lee outside of Richmond. Lee’s forces turned north after defeating McClellan at the Seven Days battles, eventually tangling with Pope’s forces at Cedar Mountain.
Battle of Kelly’s Ford, March 17, 1863: On March 16, 1863, 2,100 Union cavalrymen under Brigadier Gen. William Averell set out to “rout or destroy” Brigadier Gen. Fitzhugh Lee and his cavalry as the Confederates sheltered south of the river near Culpeper Courthouse.
On St. Patrick’s Day, Averell forced a crossing at Kelly’s Ford and pressed forward two miles into open ground. Averell repulsed several of Lee’s attacks, forcing the Confederate cavalry from the field with a counterattack. With victory in his grasp, Averell withdrew back across the river that evening.
Battle of Brandy Station, June 9, 1863: In June, General Robert E. Lee, emboldened by a victory at Chancellorsville, launched a second invasion of the North. As Lee made his move toward the Shenandoah Valley, he tasked Major Gen. J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry with screening his movements. The Confederate cavalry was detected by Union cavalry under Alfred Pleasonton and quickly escalated into the largest cavalry battle to ever take place in North America. The two sides locked in combat for 14 hours – much of it occurring on Fleetwood Hill, which changed hands multiple times during the battle.
Battle of Rappahannock Station, Nov. 7, 1863: The second of two battles that occurred at Rappahannock Station was fought on Nov. 7, 1863 when Union Gen. George G. Meade launched a two-pronged attack against Lee’s lines along the Rapidan River, resulting in a Union victory.

Yours in Christ, Stand Firm Christian Church
BY PASTOR TRAVIS PHILLIPS
Abig “howdy” to each of you reading this short missive. I greet you in the blessed name of Jesus Christ, whom I and those in my charge worship and follow as our Lord and Savior. Together we comprise a new local congregation – Stand Firm Christian Church. Let me tell you our story…
Stand Firm Christian Church began just over a year ago. We came together to better adhere to our Christian faith’s biblical roots and to learn from God: that is, to learn what God has revealed in the Bible about Himself, about people (that’s you and me, friend!), and about what it means to be in a living, personal relationship with Him – the God of the universe.
Our biblically-informed faith relationship with Jesus helps us individually and corporately to successfully navigate the often turbulent waters of our fast-paced and increasingly secular society with its many social, political and spiritual perils. Truly, learning about God’s plans and purposes for basic folks like you and me gives us encouragement, structure and comfort – even today!
While internalizing the Scriptures is the main focus of our church services and religious education programs, serving others is just as important to us. Obeying Jesus’ command to “love your neighbor” motivates us to reach beyond our church body and serve other people in the county, our nation and overseas.
Currently, we are actively supporting local single moms and foster care providers, visiting the homeless and lifting up persecuted Christians abroad. We also support missionaries in and short-term work trips to mission churches in Honduras and communist Cuba. Mission trip workers often report spiritual transformation via the Holy Spirit through serving on such an endeavor. Jesus was right: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)
God has given our church a vision of what He wants us to become in thought, word and deed:
We are
Stand Firm Christian Church
Bible-Based, Christ-Centered, Holy Spirit Led Becoming more like Jesus…
God’s humble servants in the world
If you, like us, desire to expand your knowledge and understanding of the Bible, and deepen your faith walk with Jesus, come and get involved. If you have any questions simply peruse our social media presence or drop by for worship on Sunday morning. Our doors are open to you and you are most welcome. I look forward to seeing you soon!
Stand Firm Christian Church worships weekly at the Reva Fire Hall, 18230 Birmingham Road, Culpeper.
Gray Ghost Pioneers
Wine Quality in Virginia
Gray Ghost Vineyards, one of Virginia’s most awarded wineries, celebrates 30 years in business this year.
Gray Ghost, in Amissville, is committed to bringing Virginia recognition as a quality wine producing region, winning over 3,000 awards in its three decades of existence. That commitment continues today with the 2023 Adieu awarded back-to-back “Best of Show” honors at the International Women’s Wine Competition in Sonoma, Calif., and the Mid-Atlantic Southeastern Wine Competition in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Gray Ghost’s 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon took “Best of Class” at the East Meets West Wine Competition in Santa Rosa, Calif., while the 2021 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon won “Best of Category” at the Atlantic Seaboard Competition.
“These recent announcements in international wine competitions solidify our belief that Gray Ghost is committed to quality wine production and also to illustrate how Virginia wines compare on an international stage,” said owner and winemaker Al Kellert.
A visit to Gray Ghost is not just about high-quality wine. The winery is also recognized for having an incredibly
friendly and knowledgeable sta .
Everyone feels like family when walking through the door. Gray Ghost’s winery events, including the annual volunteer harvest program, Christmas Cork and Cheese and Irresistible Chocolates and Cabernet, are some of the most popular in Virginia.
Did you know that Gray Ghost has the largest cork Christmas display in the world? Every year, Kellert adds a new item to the display. With over 300,000 corks used in the display, visitors have an opportunity to see a Christmas tree, 14-foot nutcracker, biplane and more all made from corks. The display is available for viewing from mid-November through New Year’s Eve.
Welcome to Victory Hearing Care
At Victory Hearing Care, we believe that every step toward better hearing is a victory worth celebrating. Mother and daughter team, Teresa Lough and Victoria Lough-Diehl, know firsthand how hearing loss a ects family and communication. Teresa, born with hearing loss, only got hearing aids when Victoria was a teenager, dramatically improving their lives. Inspired, Victoria joined Teresa in the hearing healthcare industry.
As a mother-daughter team of Hearing Instrument Specialists, they are dedicated to providing the highest quality hearing solutions, uniting families through better hearing and helping our community hear and be heard.
After serving the communities in Culpeper and Richmond respectively, Teresa and Victoria have opened an o ce in Warrenton, where they feel there is a need for additional hearing care services.
Their team is committed to o ering a comprehensive range of services to support your hearing health. Whether you suspect hearing loss or are experiencing symptoms of tinnitus, our knowledgeable sta is here to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Teresa and Victoria are passionate about educating the community on how early intervention is imperative. Untreated hearing loss also is linked to hastened cognitive decline in elderly persons living independently and with global brain atrophy. Teresa and Victoria have lived the struggle hearing loss has had on them and their family. Their desire is to help others implement e ective treatment options, prevent progression, improve communication and enhance quality of life.

Since its establishment, The Carver 4-County Museum has produced four commemorative calendars and 48 in-museum, traveling, virtual and special-event exhibits.
The museum is free and open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment. For more information, visit carver4cm.org or email carver4cm@gmail.com.
