SALUTE TO VETERANS
Editor’s Note: This section, published every year on or around Veterans Day, is our annual effort to provide a small measure of thanks to the tens of thousands of active-duty service members and veterans who have given so much so we can be free. The write-ups and photos published on this page and the pages that follow were submitted to InsideNoVa online by friends, family members and colleagues over the past month. We salute you.

• Orange Park, Fla. • Age: 88 • Branch: Navy • Highest rank achieved: Commander • Years of Service: 27 • Details of service: Cmdr. Hubbard deployed all over the world from Korea to three deployments to Vietnam and even the Baltic Sea on the Soviet Union’s front porch. Cmdr. Hubbard is my dad, but more than that, he has been a mentor, coach and encourager as I embarked on my Navy journey. He gave me valuable advice like, “Stay away from people who have nothing to lose, if they don’t care about their own lives or yours.” He was at sea much of his career beating back the Koreans, the North Vietnamese and the Soviet Union. I found a Super 8 movie of his ship in the Baltic Sea and asked why they were there. With a wry grin, he said, “Because we could.” He is a wonderful man and role model.
