Ted Danson Shares Tips for Healthy Aging In his distinguished career, actor Ted Danson has played many iconic roles, including a cantankerous but caring doctor. In real life, the 70-year-old says good relationships with health care providers are critical for healthy aging. “I like the personal relationship with a fellow human being who has compassion, and offers a solid plan to fix whatever is going on with both body and mind,” says Danson. “If something is going on with me, or I’m afraid something is, usually just knowing the facts not only relaxes me, but empowers me, because the doctor will tell me what to do to make it better.” Danson is currently promoting whole person health with Cigna, which serves older adults in 16 states through its Medicare Advantage (MA) plans. He’s encouraging people to talk to their health care providers about emotional and physical health, including preventive care, as well as common issues like stress, anxiety, loneliness and sleeplessness, which can impact overall health, according to experts. “Preventive care plays an important role in long-term wellness. Issues like stress can lead to serious health conditions such as diabetes and heart
for colorectal cancer, the secondleading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country. When caught early, the disease is curable. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends starting screening at age 50. MA plans, like those offered by Cigna, cover screening costs at various intervals depending on risk.

disease. That’s why it’s so important to have annual wellness exams, and make that time meaningful by being open about everything you’re feeling,” says Dr. Dirk Wales, chief medical director with Cigna Medicare. For healthy aging, Dr. Wales recommends the following preventive measures: • Annual health risk assessment

(HRA). Your physician or insurer will likely ask you to take an annual HRA -- a quick series of questions designed to help flag issues early, so you can access the right benefits and resources for you. • Colorectal cancer screenings. Too few older adults get screened
• Breast cancer screenings. Breast cancer, the most common cancer in American women outside of skin cancer, affects one in eight women in their lifetimes. USPSTF recommends women ages 50 to 74 years old with average risk get a mammogram every two years. Screenings can help detect breast cancer early, when it’s easier to treat. • Eye exams, if you have diabetes. People with diabetes have a higher risk of blindness, but early detection and treatment can help proAGING

5 Simple Ways to Make Healthy Choices at Summer BBQs While fun, all those barbecues and cookouts of summer can present a challenge when you’re trying to lose weight and stay healthy. However, there’s no need to ditch these fun get-togethers for fear of derailing your healthy lifestyle. Instead, you can employ some simple tricks to help you stay on track. According to Courtney McCormick, manager of clinical research and nutrition at Nutrisystem, here are several ways to keep winning at weight loss without missing out on the fun. • Volunteer to Bring the Appetizers: If you don’t want your only snacking choice to be chips and highcalorie onion dip or a cheese and meat tray, offer to bring a chopped veggie plate along with low-fat dip, or baked chips with salsa or hummus. “I’m a big fan of making my own chips to bring to barbecues. I’ll make kale chips or apple chips -- they’re always a crowd-pleaser,” says Genie Francis, soap opera television star and Nutrisystem ambassador. • Take a Small Scoop of Coleslaw: Even if it’s made with high-fat mayonnaise, one serving (around three ounces) is only about 172 calories and has two grams of fiber (thank you cabbage!), according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Better yet, make your own and bring it with you -- just swap in low-calorie mayo for the regular variety or do a vinegar-based dress-
ing to cut the calories by as much as two-thirds. • Enjoy Those Baked Beans (in Moderation): We all love baked beans at a BBQ. Feel free to eat them, just try to stick to half a cup or less, as one cup could have more than 300 calories, depending on the brand. The good news is that this side is also high in hunger-satisfying fiber -- half a cup has about five grams. • Load Up on Green Salad:

tect against vision loss. Getting an annual eye exam -- which Medicare covers if you have diabetes -- is critical. Certain MA plans may offer additional coverage. • Annual flu shots. Between 70 and 90 percent of seasonal flu-related deaths occur in people 65 years old and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The best defense, an annual flu shot, is covered fully by Medicare and MA plans when you visit a participating provider. • Discuss mind and body. Depression isn’t a normal part of aging and it’s treatable. Be open with your health care provider about everything you’re feeling -- body and mind. of life. To help him grow. At Thrive, we honor residents by treating them with the same respect they’ve shown over a lifetime. So for all that Dad has given to you, give him a small token of your love and schedule a tour of our community. We can’t guarantee it’ll make up for your rebellious years, but it’s a great place to start.
Produce is abundant this time of year. Bring a green salad to the party. Don’t forget to add lots of low-calorie veggies and pair it with a bottle of low-calorie dressing. Or, opt for grilled veggie kebabs, which are full of fiber and flavor and light on calories. • For Dessert, Think Fresh or Frozen: End your meal with a slice of watermelon, a scoop of fruit salad or fruity sorbet, or a healthful frozen fruit bar. You’ll be able to indulge without all
the guilt, and your taste buds will thank you. For more great tips on how to lose weight and live healthier, visit leaf.nutrisystem.com. When you’re faced with those tough weight-loss “make-or-break” moments this summer, remember, BBQs have nothing on you. You can make healthier choices and still enjoy the company of family and friends. -StatePoint

How Patients Can Ensure They're Considering Every Cancer Treatment Option elanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, is one of the most common types of cancer in the U.S. M and rates are on the rise. Choosing a course of treat-
ment is one of the biggest decisions one makes while battling cancer, but experts say that many patients aren’t being told about a critical option: clinical trials. Only one in four people know anything about clinical trials, according to the National Institutes of Health, and only 15 percent of patients report ever having been asked to participate. But clinical trials are not only a way to gain access to new, potentially lifesaving treatments that may prove more beneficial than drugs on the market, they are also what’s made every single FDA-approved drug that exists today possible. While melanoma therapies have improved dramatically over the past decade, there’s still no cure. “We have made enormous strides in treating melanoma, but too many people still aren't benefiting from even the newest approaches,” says Marc Hurlbert, Ph.D., Melanoma Research Alliance, chief science officer. “Lack of awareness about treatment opportunities, particularly for patients seen outside of premier cancer centers, along with myths associated with research studies, continue to present obstacles for patient participation.” Patients should understand all of their options to make the best possible decisions about their care. “I would not be alive today, I mean hands down, without clinical trials. Stage IV melanoma had a 14 percent five-year survival rate when I was diagnosed in 2012,” says Jamie Troil Goldfarb, a stage IV mela-
standard or investigational therapy, by participating in a clinical trial, you’ll receive close monitoring of your condition. 3) MYTH: Clinical trials cost more than standard treatment. REALITY: The trial sponsor usually pays for the experimental therapy. They may also pay for any additional tests or visits required for the study. Patients, or their insurance, are responsible for the usual costs of care needed regardless of being in a clinical trial. 4) MYTH: If clinical trials were right for me, my doctor would say something. REALITY: Not all doctors are aware of all options. Patients should be their own advocate and research what’s available. 5) MYTH: If I change my mind, or the treatment isn’t working, I’m stuck. REALITY: Clinical trial participation is voluntary and you can quit any time for any reason. Currently, there are over 400 melanoma-focused trials actively enrolling patients. These trials will help develop new and improve existing treatments, and offer patients an opportunity to access cutting edge therapies. To learn more and be matched to clinical trials in your area, visit curemelanoma.org/clinicaltrials. If you are battling melanoma, or any cancer, remember to ask about clinical trials. You haven’t considered all of your options until you do. -StatePoint
noma survivor. Choosing a treatment direction, including whether or not to enter into a clinical trial, is a big decision. To help people make informed decisions and understand just how important clinical trials are to everyone, the Melanoma Research Alliance created resources and tools about clinical trials, and is dispelling these five common myths: 1) MYTH: Clinical trials are a last resort. REALITY: Joining a clinical trial is a viable treatment option from day one of your diagnosis. 2) MYTH: I might get a sugar pill (placebo) without any real treatment. REALITY: In melanoma clinical trials, patients may receive a placebo in addition to an FDA-approved standard of care treatment. Whether you’re getting a
