Introductions this issue’s guest editor, Lee Stadler

Place To Be usually enjoys the opportunity to feature pioneers in the realm of architectue, design and the worlds they help imagine. This time around, we let the worlds speak for themselves. Issue 2 features visions of stone and water as captured in the environments they have made... or that have made them. Less talk. More show. Always a place to be.

After a short 3-mile hike, the trail in Mt. Rogers state park opens into a brilliant meadow that is home to a primitive campsite, a fast running stream, and some amazing views.

West of the campsite lies a rough horse trail extending far into the distance. The shot to the left was taken at around 5:45 a.m. from the top of the ridge after sloshing through the fern and dew-covered ground that also serves as a home for several hidden tributaries to the adjacent stream. For inquiring minds, they’re just as cold as the stream and were more effective at awakening a slumbering soul than 4 shots of espresso.

Shortly after snapping this panoramic we hiked down into the canopy of magnolias and happened across a troop of boyscouts. They had weathered a fierce storm the previous night in a three-walled shelter constructed for just such an occasion.

It’s quite a comfortable hammock. So much so that every time it’s been brought along, tied to a couple of relaxing trees and set to swaying, it is immediately invaded by several species of creatures - primarily humans. An important note about comfortable hammocks; they make lousy blankets. Also, don’t take lightly the sign at the bottom of the trail stating the weather’s propensity to shift drastically.

Skinks are a common occurance in many locales. They’re usually skitish, unlike this atypical specimen of the “stare-back-at-you” variety.

The scents that unravel in the air of the Blue Ridge Mountains are intoxicating. Far from asphalt vapors and fast food grease the senses come alive. An immense desire arises to run headlong into the underbrush and bound down the hillside to the ravines below.

We tend to think of mountains as immovable beacons of time. Things to be climbed and conquored. Quests to be had and told. Wishing to move the immovable we pass by the ever-changing beauty once thought stoic and pale. A slower trek causes pause. A faster gait fills the lungs. Anything but the common rate of human movement of body and mind hightens awareness of the fullness that surrounds us when in the midst of the cradle. A place to visit. A place to stay. A place to dream.

No, this isn’t the same bird from a few pages back. Though, that would be quite intriguing if it was. It’s just nice to see another early riser enjoying the waves. Amidst the crash and tumble of the foam is a serenity that escapes description.

Change itself is a constant. Knowing that the constancy of a place that is ever-changing, ever-growing and moving, gently held by the tether of time and always ready for visit is a reward in and of itself. So we move, from moment to moment and year to year, capturing the moments of existence we wish to preserve more firmly than what we feel the mind is able to retain. We hold them fast. Dreams to behold. Places to be.
