With plenty of great value accommodation, including camping and caravan sites and YHA lodges, Lee Valley Regional Park is the perfect place to enjoy a day, a weekend or a longer break. Our sports and leisure venues, heritage sites, gardens and riverside trails follow 26 miles of the route of the River Lee and we’re easy to reach on foot, bicycle, bus, train or car. Whether you want to walk, run, jog, ice skate, ride a horse, visit our farms or simply a relaxing day out or want to experience the adrenalin rush of white water, we’ve a huge range of activities for you.

Lee Valley Regional Park is an ideal place to get hooked on angling. It’s renowned for excellent Carp, Chub, Bream, Tench and Barbel fishing. At North Met Pits record Carp weighed in at 47lbs 9oz!

Extraordinary, exhilarating and memorable days out are guaranteed in Lee Valley Regional Park. With an astonishing range of activities to choose from you’ll never be bored and there are many opportunities to discover something new. If you’re looking for the adrenalin rush of white water rafting, cycling around a London 2012 venue or maybe something more sedate like a round of golf or a day’s fishing the park has a venue that can fulfil your wish. There is also a huge selection of family friendly activities with an open farm to look around, an ice

skating rink to cool off in and the chance to learn to horse ride or go on a scenic pony trek. There is even the option of enjoying a cruise on the river or paddling under your own steam. With miles of green open spaces to enjoy Lee Valley Regional Park is the perfect destination to enjoy the great outdoors for a variety of activities such as walking, cycling, running and bird watching.

The Fisheries Team directly manage 13 angling venues throughout the park and have an active re-stocking programme from their Carp rearing facility. With diverse water areas available and large fish specimens waiting to get hooked, there’s a challenge lying just below the surface for you.

Season permits These are available on nine of our angling venues and price reductions are available for senior citizens, under 16s, unemployed, students in full time education and the registered disabled. Day and day/night tickets There are currently two angling venues at Stanstead Innings where tickets need to be purchased from the authorised Bailiff on the bank. Athletics Academy and courses To encourage children aged 6 to 12 years old to try athletics, the centre runs tailor made after school sessions on a Tuesday, Thursday and Friday along with an extensive programme of holiday courses using the UK Athletics model and a series of Minithon events. Take on the challenge or the 250m Siberian Pine indoor track with a taster session. Once accredited our skill sessions will help you work on different aspects of track cycling.

Five miles of brand new, off-road trails are ready to be explored and conquered. Graded like ski runs, from gentle to difficult they feature bumps, hills and sharp turns that will make you fall in love with this fast and furious sport.

The iconic velodrome at Lee Valley VeloPark dominates the skyline and is worth a visit just to experience the views, make a full day of it by visiting the other attractions on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Enjoy the one mile floodlit road circuit. This six metre wide circuit is the ideal place for children to learn the essential skills to cycle safely on the road or the more competitive rider can join one of the clubs that regularly ride here. Pay and ride session are also available.

With so many different animals to meet from cuddly sheep, rare breed pigs and cows to llamas, reindeer and the loveable meerkat family, there’s never a dull moment.

As well as the animals, there's a toboggan run, outdoor adventure play areas including a play combine harvester and sandpit and an indoor soft play barn where the kids can let off steam. For the older children there’s a Giant Bouncing Pillow to jump on and a Spider Tower to climb.

If after all that excitement you’re looking for somewhere to refuel, the Orchard Café offers freshly cooked food throughout the day. Enjoy fresh bean coffee, homemade cakes, scones, cookies and a range of freshly prepared hot dishes.

Take a stroll to the working dairy farm or enjoy a tractor and trailer ride. Here you can visit the milking barn and parlour, watch the calves being fed or learn about how the dairy cows live, feed and sleep. This unique venue offers premier facilities for hockey and tennis. At the heart of the venue you’ll also find a great clubhouse where you can relax with your team mates or opponents after training sessions and matches.

This 18 hole parkland course is renowned for always being in great condition with all year round playability. It offers a challenge to players of all handicaps, with several holes moulded around a lake. The course is open to all standards of players, members and non-members alike. It’s an interesting and cleverly designed course with water in play on ten holes using the natural features of a large lake and the River Lee Navigation which is home to many birds. For those who enjoy nature there’s even a specially designed bird hide so you can watch the wildlife on the lake.

The large rolling greens have earned a well respected reputation for their all year round consistency and lightning pace.

Working closely with England Hockey and local hockey clubs the venue will provide great opportunities for anyone interested in the sport to become involved. The two water based pitches will provide a premier training base for anyone who would like to try the sport for the first time, improve their existing skills, squad training or play matches at the venue. Quicksticks and Rush Hockey programmes will provide the opportunity for non-club members to get involved in the sport. Lee Valley Riding Centre is set in 25 acres of wonderful open space in the heart of East London. It's British Horse Society accredited and provides accessible, affordable riding for the local community and across the region.

School and youth groups can book fun lessons or courses with us and during school holidays we provide children’s activities such as 'Own a Pony' mornings and pony trekking. You can also book a children’s riding party or buy gift vouchers for lessons.

Public skating sessions are available to suit all ages and abilities. There’s seating for up to 800 spectators where you can sit back and watch the fun if you don’t fancy skating. The Ice House Café offers a wide range of drinks and freshly prepared food – enjoy great food whilst warming up or just watching the skaters glide by. Cool parties are a breeze – come along with your friends and receive coaching, time on the ice to practice your new skills and party food. Learn to skate You can learn to skate by joining our National Learn to Skate Programme, receiving tuition from our fully qualified coaches. For the more adventurous youngsters there’s even a junior ice hockey club (once they reach Level 5 Learn to Skate). Lee Valley Ice Centre can also be hired for corporate events, filming and private hire as well as offering special discount rates for groups, schools and non-profit organisations.

A fantastic clubhouse forms the heart of the venue where you can relax with your team mates or opponents after training sessions and matches. The venue also offers a series of LTA training courses to suit all levels with a strong emphasis on inclusive sport for all. Where better to explore the great outdoors than Lee Valley Regional Park. The park offers many riverside trails, country parks, nature reserves and urban oases. We make being more active easy and enjoyable. You can go for a bike ride, a run or simply stroll in any one of our numerous open spaces – it’s free and we’re open 365 days a year. Surfaced pathways crisscross many of our sites making them accessible whatever the weather and provide good access for wheelchairs and pushchairs. For the dedicated runner, the park offers some fantastic flat, ‘personal best’ routes including our 10k course in River Lee Country Park (pages 12 & 13) and our athletics centre (pages 22 & 23) offers not only a state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor track but an all weather Trim Trail route. Our ‘Get Active in the Lee Valley Regional Park’ booklet highlights 40 routes of various lengths throughout the park suitable for walking, running and cycling. If you want more of a challenge, why not try the Lee Valley Pathway or the Lea Valley Walk which offers a 50 mile route following the River Lea from its source in Luton down to the Thames in East London. We also offer an extensive programme of guided walks and bike rides along with sports events including 10k runs and charity bike rides. At Lee Valley Boat Centre you can hire rowing boats and pedalos to explore the gently flowing River Lee, or cruise at your leisure in an electric boat. All are available to hire from 30 minutes up to an hour; a boat to suit everyone.

Scheduled cruises Experience life at a leisurely pace and relax on these circular cruises along the River Lee marvelling at the views from the river. Jump aboard either the Lady of Lee Valley or the Pride of the Lee where you can choose from a short one hour cruise or the longer themed cream tea or lunch cruises. White water rafting

Canoeing and kayaking

This half day experience will see you take on the rapids with our highly skilled raft guides putting you to the test as you navigate the obstacles and drops on the 300m Olympic course whilst mastering the art of spinning and nose dunking! All the kit is provided so all you need to do is bring your swimmers.

If you’re looking for that next paddling challenge you could put your skills to the test on either of our 160m or 300m courses. If you’re a competent paddler you can take a short assessment and become a member allowing you to paddle either course. If you’re looking for a more relaxing paddling session or to practice your technique you can paddle on the flat water lake.

Hydrospeeding and Hot Dog sessions A great physical white water challenge which will see you use your own power to navigate the 160m Legacy Loop. The hydrospeed, a cross between a bodyboard and a float, will see you carve, turn and surf the course as you follow the instructions from the qualified coaches. Amwell is a reserve not to be missed, where you'll discover a very important place for wildlife. A former gravel pit, now flooded, Amwell forms a vital link in a chain of wetland sites that stretch through the park.

Lee Valley Regional Park offers an impressive variety of places to visit which are easily accessible and have a wide range of habitats and wildlife to see throughout the year. Whether you’re on the look out for somewhere to walk, run or cycle or to gain closeup views of wildlife, there's something for everyone. The landscape of the Lee Valley has been dramatically altered during the last century. The traditional hay meadows of the valley floor have been replaced by new wetland habitats, created by the extraction of sand and gravel and the construction of water supply reservoirs. This mosaic of wetlands has created internationally important areas for birds and much of it has been designated as a Special Protection Area. The modern Lee Valley contains a diverse mix of wildlife habitats, supporting over 500 species 22

of flowering plant. In recent times the valley has attracted over 200 species of birds, with around 150 occurring annually. 35 species of mammal and over half the UK’s dragonfly species have also been recorded in the park. Conservation is important to us and this doesn’t only mean protecting rare and endangered wildlife but also identifying what needs to be done to ensure that our most common and familiar wildlife remains abundant. Working with partners across Hertfordshire, Essex and London we help to ensure that the Lee Valley becomes an even better place for wildlife in the future. E xplore Lee Valley Regional Park

Nationally significant numbers of birds use the nature reserve as a safe haven and in summer, dragonflies and damselflies are abundant around the lake. The three hides and viewing areas around the nature reserve have been created to give you the best possible chance of seeing wildlife.

The nearest train station is St Margarets on the Liverpool Street line (20 minute walk). Buses 351 and 524 stop at Stanstead Abbotts (20 minute walk). Bus C3 and L3 also travels near to the site. Price Free.

The lakes and their habitats attract breeding birds such as Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Little Ringed Plover, Common Tern, Kingfisher, Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler and Reed Bunting. Wintering birds such as Gadwall, Shoveler, Smew and Bittern can also be found. The reserve is one of the most important sites in Hertfordshire for Otters, following their reintroduction in 1991. Reptiles and amphibians such as Grass Snake, Common Newt and Common Frog can be found here and it’s also the richest site in the county for water beetles and water bugs. With picnic areas, bird hides and viewing areas this is an ideal site for a little foray with nature. Amwell Nature Reserve is owned and managed by the Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust.

These two sites are hidden gems in inner London. You can walk, birdwatch, pond dip or just sit and relax at these surprisingly peaceful spots. Bow Creek Ecology Park

Bow Creek – the nearest train station is Canning Town (5 minute walk).

Once used for iron works, shipbuilding and as a coal wharf, we’ve gradually redeveloped the site to provide tranquillity in an urban landscape.

Buses 115 and 309 stop on East India Dock Road.

The site is a bloom of flowers and buzzing insects during the summer months. Interconnecting ponds teem with life such as newts and Water Scorpion. The surrounding tidal river attracts flocks of waders such as Redshank when the mud is exposed at low tide.

East India – the nearest train stations are East India DLR (5 minute walk) or Canary Wharf underground station (20 minute walk).

The site boasts an outdoor classroom that can be used by groups throughout the year and holds a prestigious Green Flag Award. East India Dock Basin

The most southerly point and gateway of Lee Valley Regional Park, this site is steeped in history associated with the import and export of goods via ship in the 1800's. The basin is the only remaining part of the docks.

Glen Faba These two manmade lakes are the result of the once thriving sand and gravel extraction industry that existed in the Lee Valley. The largest of the lakes, Glen Faba is a mature gravel pit, the other to the north west of the site is known locally as Stort Pit. The site is known for its waterbirds in winter with excellent views of Gadwall and Wigeon, as well as occasional visitors such as Black-necked Grebe. Angling on Glen Faba is by season permit only, see the angling section on page 21 or visit our website.

With a mixture of open water, wildflower meadows, woodland scrub and Lee Valley’s only area of saltmarsh, it’s a haven for many birds such as Kingfisher, occasional Black Redstart and nesting Common Tern. Offering fantastic views of the O2 and Canary Wharf, the site is an ideal place to relax from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Dobbs Weir This collection of green space areas adjacent to the River Lee Navigation are ideal for walking, cycling and picnicking. Why not take a relaxing stroll along the tow path to see what wildlife can be found locally? The remains of the historically important manual gated weir that used to control water levels in the navigation, especially at the time of heavy rains, can still be seen. Gunpowder Park is a 222 acre country park south of Waltham Abbey, which has a host of important wildlife and provides a wonderful day out for family and friends. Formerly part of the Royal Gunpowder Mills it was used for the research and development of explosives. This land has now been regenerated into a great place for walkers, runners and cyclists with a network of pathways making the site fantastically accessible. From gazing at the birds overhead to listening for the insects shrouded by the undergrowth, this site is ideal to spend time in the great outdoors. This Green Flag accredited site has wide open spaces making it perfect for picnics and play.

For the wildlife enthusiast there’s always something to be spotted, from dragonflies and butterflies, to Skylark, Tawny Owl and farmland birds such as Linnet and Yellowhammer. The diverse habitats include marsh, wildflower meadows, native trees, ditches and grass field margins providing a wonderful setting to nurture native wildlife. Next to Gunpowder Park is the 36 acre Sewardstone Marsh. Take a wander and explore the differing habitats. The sister site to the WaterWorks Centre (page 20) this ten acre haven for wildlife has seen many improvements since the park took over in 1988. Habitats ranging from open water, marsh reedbed, swampy scrub and woodland ensures a diverse mix of plants and wildlife. More than 200 species of plants have been recorded including Purple Loosestrife, Shining Crane’s-bill and Lady’s Smock (also known as Cuckoo Flower).

Marvel at the renovated Peach House, Kitchen Garden, Potting Shed and the Victorian Glasshouse. The Visitor Centre boasts a tea room serving a wide variety of cakes and snacks as well as refreshments. The Bowles Museum helps bring the gardens’ history alive with information and artefacts. An impressive range of flora and fauna can be discovered within the gardens. Formerly the ancestral home of the Parker Bowles family, these unique gardens are an enchanting place to visit at any time of year. Throughout the changing seasons there’s always something new and wondrous to catch your eye. Highlights to look out for include: Spring daffodils, tulips and a national collection of award winning Bearded Irises.

Rammey Marsh This small open space is just south of the M25. Initially created by gravel extraction and subsequent back filling from projects such as the M25 motorway has resulted in grassland that now forms part of the park’s Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation in London. 225 different plant species have been recorded including large colonies of the beautiful Bee and Pyramidal Orchid.

The nearest train station is Enfield Lock on the Liverpool Street line (15 minute walk). Bus 491 (Mollison Avenue) travels near to the sites. Price Free.

If you’re very lucky you may be able to see Water Vole which live in the ditch that runs across the site. On summer evenings look out for bats flying along the line of large willow trees.

The site comprises of two areas, Railway Spur and Turning Pool and is a good location for a relaxing picnic. Plus it's part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network - Route 1 and Section 18 of the London Loop Walk passes through the site. The large network of pathways makes it an ideal place for walkers, runners and cyclists to explore and enjoy. We have themed trails within the country park, from orchids to Otters. Most of the pathways are well surfaced and suitable for wheelchair users and buggies. With areas of green open space the family can enjoy the outdoors in safe, well managed surroundings.

Then give our Disc Golf course a try, located between Windmill Lane entrance and Lee Valley White Water Centre. On the southern edge of the country park you'll find Lee Valley White Water Centre, host venue for the London 2012 Olympic Canoe Slalom events, which offers adrenalin fuelled white water activities (pages 16 & 17). If all this wandering makes you thirsty, refreshments are available at Broxbourne Old Mill & Meadows, Lee Valley Park Farms (pages 10 & 11), Lee Valley White Water Centre (pages 16 & 17) and at YHA London Lee Valley (page 43).

Nearly 11 miles of pathways have been designated shared-use paths which are ideal for cycling and include part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network – Route 1. Cycle hire is available from Lee Valley Cycle Hire (Old Mill & Meadows, Broxbourne).

Walking, running and cycling

The great outdoors This wonderful 1,000 acre country park stretches on either side of the River Lee between Waltham Abbey (Essex) and Broxbourne (Hertfordshire) and has been transformed from old gravel pits. The area teems with wildlife and is one of the premier places in the country for birdwatching. There are four main access points to the country park at: 1. Old Mill & Meadows, Broxbourne (EN10 6QT) 2. Lee Valley Park Farms/Fishers Green, Waltham Abbey (EN9 2EF) 3. Pindar and Cheshunt Country Walk, Cheshunt (EN8 9AJ) 4. Waltham Abbey Gardens, Waltham Abbey (EN9 1XQ) It’s a great open space for all the family to enjoy whether it’s for an hour, a day or longer.

Whether you're just exploring this wonderful area or discovering what could lurk in the undergrowth, this country park is the ideal area for getting out and about. Our Dog Agility Course provides a challenge for more active dogs, our Poetry Trail offers some classic poems for you to read, or let the kids enjoy the great outdoors with our natural play areas which are located near to the Pindar entrance.

Angling and boating The country park is also home to many fantastic angling sites for which season permits can be purchased, see the angling section on page 5 or visit our website. You can also hire electric boats, pedalos or day boats from Lee Valley Boat Centre (pages 20 & 21) if you fancy having fun on the river. Rye House Gatehouse is all that remains of a once fantastic fortified manor house constructed by Sir Andrew Ogard in 1443. It was one of the first brick built buildings in the country and one of the finest medieval moated sites in Hertfordshire. The gatehouse is a Grade I listed building. The site has a vibrant history from the Rye House Plot – an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate King Charles II, to being a workhouse and a place where the Victorians came to enjoy landscaped gardens, banquets and the delights of the countryside. The gatehouse boasts a winding staircase which leads to an outside viewing platform where you can take a close look at a fine example of a “Barley Sugar Twist” chimney, along with views over the Lee and Stort Valleys. Nearby on the River Lee Navigation is Rye House Quay. Once a chandler’s yard, it has been redeveloped to provide daytime mooring for boats and an area for picnics.

E xplore Lee Valley Regional Park

The reedbeds, open water and floodplain meadows of Rye Meads offer some fantastic opportunities for watching a range of wildlife whatever time of year you visit. There’s a network of pathways which lead to a number of wildlife hides overlooking these different habitats. A real highlight is the Kingfisher Hide which in the summer can offer fantastic views of Kingfisher nesting in the artificial bank. In summer it’s also hard to miss the noisy Common Tern colony that nest on the rafts in front of the Tern Hide. Rye Meads is not only good for birds, take time to look out for numerous butterflies and dragonflies as you meander round the reserve.

Transport Parking is available at the visitor centre off Rye Road. The nearest train station is Rye House on the Liverpool Street Line (15 minute walk). Buses 392 and C3 stop in Old Highway (15 minute walk). Price Entrance to the reserve is free, parking for non-RSPB members is £3.

Look across the meadows from the Lapwing Hide to see if you can spot the Water Buffalo and Konik Ponies that help graze the grasslands, helping provide nesting habitat for wading birds such as Lapwing. In winter the lakes provide superb habitat for wildfowl including Tufted Duck, Gadwall and Shoveler whilst the wet scrapes are perfect for foraging Green Sandpiper. This 122 acre site has at its heart old gravel pits which now form Abbotts Lake and two smaller fishing lakes, Banjo Lake and Stock Pit. Surrounding the lakes are a mix of meadow, marshland, reedbed and scrub. Close by, during the summer months you can see our cattle grazing at Ryegate Farm. A circular walk of just less than two miles encompasses Abbotts Lake going beneath the A414 to Rye Meads Nature Reserve, managed by the RSPB and Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust. The walk includes two bird hides, the Shoveler and Sandpiper Hides overlook part of Abbotts Lake where birds including Tufted Duck, Gadwall, Shoveler, Kingfisher and Great Crested Grebe can be seen. Wet woodland, fen habitat, ditches and ponds provide a diverse home for many different species of dragonfly and damselfly. Large numbers of Bee Orchids can be seen flowering in June in the meadows. Located just six miles from the centre of London, this large public open space is a mosaic of trees, shrubs, rough grassland and waterways making it an important wildlife area. The network of pathways are ideal for walking, running and cycling as well as watching wildlife. The marshes have a varied history, from Lammas meadows in the 19th century providing local people with food for their animals, to helping with food shortages during the First World War and the 'Tottenham Outrage' in 1909 when a dramatic pursuit chased two robbers across the marshes and over Chalk Bridge. Channel restoration on site has provided artificial nest sites for Sand Martin and Kingfisher. Other birds that can be spotted at the site include Great Spotted Woodpecker and Kestrel.

The glorious grassland provides a home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Look out for Field Vole, Speckled Wood Butterfly, Wasp Spider and Bee Orchid. In the pond, see if you can spot the Smooth Newt which can be found during its breeding season in early spring. In the winter they hibernate under logs and stones.

Waltham Abbey Gardens is a site steeped in history and set in the grounds of the abbey, the last to be dissolved by Henry VIII and thought to be the site of King Harold’s grave. The remains of some of the abbey buildings can still be seen today, including the gatehouse and the passage from the cloisters to the sleeping quarters. Come and enjoy a relaxing day with a family picnic and take in the sights and sounds of the wider countryside with wonderful walks along Cornmill Stream. Why not explore the old orchard which is home to traditional varieties of apples. In the autumn as the apples ripen, visitors are encouraged to sample the delights of this community space.

Tucked behind Lee Valley Ice Centre is a wonderful riverside nature reserve which has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is very important for certain rare plants and other wildlife. The pathways that interlace Walthamstow Marshes make this an ideal place to take a stroll and get away from it all. Bridleways and cycle paths cross the site to allow access for horses and cyclists.

As the name suggests this site, along with its sister site Middlesex Filter Beds (page 9), was once used for water purification, but it’s now a unique wildlife haven and fantastic area for all the family.

The SSSI is a fragment of once extensive marshes and traces of Ice Age river channels can still be seen when the water table is high. After a gap of nearly 100 years cows can now be seen grazing the marshes again, restoring an ancient tradition.

Here you’ll find one of the largest bird hides in London which provides a fantastic close up experience for all our visitors. Nine of the original water filter beds remain and each radial bed is managed throughout the year to show the different stages of natural succession, ranging from open water to floodplain grassland through to dense reed and willow woodland. There’s also a wildlife garden and a willow canopy boardwalk.

A diverse wildlife population is supported by the marshes. At the water’s edge look out for Mute Swan, Grey Heron, Cormorant and Little Grebe. In the grasslands you may see Reed Bunting, Linnet, Kestrel, Green Woodpecker and Mistle Thrush to name a few. In spring, Reed, Sedge and other warblers arrive. In winter, look out for the thrushes, Redwing and Fieldfare. The site boasts flora such as Creeping Marshwort (one of Britain’s rarest plants), Purple and Yellow Loosestrife, Yellow Iris and Meadowsweet whilst elsewhere Bee Orchid, Penny-royal and Slender Thistle can be seen.

As one of three nature reserves along Lea Bridge Road, there’s lots to explore for the wildlife enthusiasts and family alike. With ice skating and horse riding all on the doorstep of this nature reserve it’s a great place to spend the day. 38

On site there are over 500 species of plants and animals such as Grass Snake, Common Lizard and toad, as well as the enigmatic Edible Frog. Over 25 species of breeding Nearby things to do... birds, including Song Thrush, Sand Martin, Linnet, Pochard and Reed Bunting have colonised the site. Kingfisher breed nearby and winter offers good views of Gadwall, Snipe and Teal. It’s also a great spot to see many of Britain’s butterflies and dragonflies, over the meadows and waterways.

Or for a more relaxed day in the great outdoors join our Volunteers Team for a range of conservation tasks and orienteering challenges (page 49).
