This sign indicates that the path is for shared use and pedestrians have right of way. Paths in the Regional Park which don’t have this sign are for pedestrians only. You can also cycle on paths and roads in the Regional Park which are owned by other organisations e.g. public highways and bridleways. In most cases towpaths are not public rights of way but routes that can be used by the public with the permission of the landowner. Permission to use the towpath is given to walkers and cyclists on a long-term basis by British Waterways. Lee Valley Regional Park has some of the best walking opportunities in the region. The Lea Valley Walk, which stretches 80kms (50 miles) from Luton to the River Thames, links all the facilities in the Regional Park using the towpath of the River Lee. The London Loop, which has been described as the M25 for walkers, crosses the Park between Cockfosters through to Enfield Lock and then to Chingford (Sections 17 and 18). Other paths in the Regional Park provide walks through fascinating areas, including Three Mills, Gunpowder Park and River Lee Country Park.

Access for all Lee Valley Regional Park has won awards for the high standard of accessibility for some of its trails including the Grasshopper and Water-Lily Walks in River Lee Country Park. These trails have been designed and improved so that disabled people, especially visitors who use wheelchairs can fully access these special areas of countryside. Much of the Regional Park is accessible to both buggies and wheelchairs.

Cycle hire There are currently two cycle hire venues in the Regional Park at Broxbourne Old Mill & Meadows and Tottenham Marshes. For further information please contact: Lee Valley Regional Park Information Service on 08456 770 600 or at www.leevalleypark.org.uk

Throughout the Lee Valley, historic fragments of its past can be found by the determined explorer using the Pathway. Just one of the fascinating heritage sites is the House Mill on Three Mills Island at Bromley-by-Bow. Built in 1776 in the Dutch style, it ground grain for gin distilling and is the largest tidal mill left standing in Britain.

Walking, cycling and other activities Many paths in Lee Valley Regional Park are ‘Shared Use’ paths for walkers, dog walkers, cyclists, anglers and joggers to enjoy. Most are well surfaced and suitable for wheelchair users and people pushing buggies. They’re also suitable for recreational cycling with family and friends but not suitable for fast journeys or for large groups of cyclists. Other paths in the Regional Park are not recommended for cyclists.

Monday to Friday Daytime Evenings

The Lee Valley Pathway The Lee Valley Pathway is a dual use pedectrian and cycle-way which runs for almost the entire length of the Regional Park. It will form part of Routes 1 and 61 of the National Cycle Network, a project championed by Sustrans. Stretching 45kms (28 miles) and threading its way from rural Hertfordshire down to the River Thames, the Pathway has a variety of uses. It’s a route for local access, providing safe, offroad recreational cycling and links many of the various facilities of the Regional Park. When it’s fully completed it’s envisaged that the Pathway will become a principal way into London for those who choose not to travel by car.

Volunteering We have a fantastic band of supporters who get involved in activities at a range of centres and open spaces within the Regional Park. These groups of people and individuals give up their free time to support the work of the Authority and undertake a variety of tasks. If you’d be interested in joining in contact our Volunteers Team on 01992 709 879

Lee Valley Regional Park From Ware in Hertfordshire through part of Essex, down to the Thames at East India Dock Basin, the Lee Valley Regional Park provides leisure activities which suit all ages, tastes and abilities. Stretching 42kms (26 miles) along the banks of the River Lee, this 4,000 hectare (10,000 acre) area has been shaped to provide a mosaic of countryside, urban green spaces, heritage sites, country parks, nature reserves and lake and riverside trails. It’s also home to a number of fantastic sports venues. So whatever you do in your leisure time, whether it’s golf, horse riding or ice skating, fishing, birdwatching or perhaps exploring countryside and historic sites, you’ll find it in Lee Valley Regional Park. There are also campsites and a Youth Hostel so you’ll have somewhere to stay too. Lee Valley Regional Park Authority is playing an active part in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The new Lee Valley White Water Centre, Lee Valley VeloPark, and Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centres will all be owned, funded and run by us following the Games. This guide provides information about how to get to all of the Regional Park’s facilities. You can drive, but we’re well served by public transport and connected by trains, tubes and buses. You can also choose to walk or use a bicycle to get around the Regional Park, using the many footpaths and cycle routes. National Express trains operate out of Liverpool Street station which allows easy access to the Regional Park. Bicycles are welcome on services where they can be accommodated safely. Bicycles aren’t permitted on some commuter trains, please check before you travel.
