1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

Three exercises have been taken to explore the relationship between above ground, ground surface and underground with frame&infill, point/line/plane and mass

7

8

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE Exploring contour of the ground and creates structure with point, line and plane. 1. Geometrical shapes are used and aligned to show the landscape of same contour. 2. Overlaying of shapes creating levels and slopes are used to show the ground condition. 3. Lines create structures and form point in intersection.

Oslo Opera House by Snohetta (Snohetta, 2007)

Institute of Engineering and Technology – Ahmedabad University by vir.mueller architects (Fanthome, 2015)

1.2 MASS Exploring underground condition by intruding lights into underground spaces. 1. Materiality is considered as exploration for gravity and heaviness of the building to show the mass. 2. Materiality changes from on the ground (lighter) to underground (heavier). 3. Symmetry is used to show the building more monumental.

1.3 FRAME & INFILL Different materials used for the infill create different senses and experiences in space., i.e. private space and open space. 1. Tranparent material infill shows the lightness that contrasts with mass, and create openness in enclosed space.

2.0 CONCEPTACLE MODEL

Generating ideas from mass, that explore the underground area more than surface on ground. Hence, taking ideas from previous pratices, using frame and intill to create private (for secret), semi-open and open place (as contrast), mass as exterior/materiality and point/line/plane as connection between the elements.

3.0 HERRING ISLAND. SOMETHING LIKE A PAVILION

17

18

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS

Herring Island is an isolated place where is suitable to keep secret. While approaching the island from access points, the journey begins from exploring interesting contour and sculptures in different spots in the island, as well as representing secrets on the island. Thick vegetations could be seen as maze that block a person’s view and require people to walk along the route, and facilitate circulation of the island.

3.2 CONCEPTACLE AND SKETCH DESIGN

Pyramid is seen as a open secret as it was a place for Egypt pharaoh to rest in peace, but now is opened for public to visit. Besides, this project intends for visitors to explore the secret within the island and project. The journey of exploring secret starts once visitiors step on the island as they need to explore the secret in the island before exploring the project. This project is extruded into the ground and divided into 3 levels which is showing above ground, on (in) the ground and underground. Above the ground is a glass and concrete pyramid that creates open spaces and anti-gravitiness that compare to other level. The level on (in) the ground is halfly engraved into the ground and three side covered and light is able to come in from one side. The underground is able for light to intrude through skylight and contrast to the level above ground with its heaviness. The whole pavilion is stressing on exploring secret underground. In this project, there will be several secret spots hidden in the underground level that require people to explore them themselves.

4.0 REFLECTION

In this subject, I have start to understand more about techtonics and the relationship between the ground and underground. Throughout these studies, I can understand how the techtonics can be applied to show the function and atmosphere of the space, experiencing different orders through space. Also, light and material are important elements for techtonics strategies for the experiences. Besides, I have also learnt how to potray different theme with different application of techtonics strategies. As a result for final design, I try to apply the 3 elements (Point/Line/Plane, Mass, Frame&Infill) into my project as well as create three different levels (above ground, on the ground and underground) to show contrast and elements within the spaces. While looking at more precedents for design development, I learnt more about the materiality (how can concrete/timber and glass uses at the same time to show the openness in an enclosed area) and atmosphere and functionality of a space (i.e. open space that can keep secret). In the end, my effort putting in researching and exploring is paid off as I am satisfied with the outcome of my project pavilion. Overall, I think that learning about atmosphere and experience in space does facilitate my designing skill by thinking about the function of a space in my future design as well as career. Besides, I do enjoy this subject and learn a lot of things, such as architecture languages as well as techniques for presentation. The most challenging part is the oral presentation within a few minutes and should communicate clearly with the tutor and I think more improvement I shall make in my next design studio.
