The Friends’ School Work Experience H2o Architects, Collingwood Design Directors: Tim Hurburgh & Mark O’Dwyer Professional Collaboration As a Student Architect and Office Intern in H2o architects, I have been working on office administration takes and project works to the instruction of the Project Architects. I have gained valuable practical experience and understand design stages by assisting the team in visualisation and documentation for different projects. I have also been enhancing my CAD and Adobe skills while working intensely on different projects at the same time.
The Friends’ School is located in Hobart and the firm is required to design based on its existing building. In this project, I was instructed to create virtual models and visualisation at the schematic stage. My roles include: - Building virtual (existing and designed) models in Rhino 5 - Export perspective view and visualise in Adobe Photoshop - Discuss with the architects and interior designer to choose the material The 2 images below are the examples of my work for this project.

Bi-learning High School Third Year Final Project Tutor: Sarah Song Individual Work This project is located at the University High School in Parkville. The school values students’ individuality, diversity and excellence. The agenda is to design a high school using reflective thinking as a type of future pedagogy. The design mimics the duality of the brains as an organ as well as a thinking tool. Hence, the building was separated into two parts while making connections in between to represent the relationship between the left and the right brain. The interiors of the building are also designed to suit each theme and facilitate student’s learning and reflective thinking.

The design cuts through the building by movements (as in site analysis) to create the effect of “left-brain” and “right-brain”. Then, create elevation by transiting from the public at a lower level to private in the upper level to differentiate the usage of the building between students and the public. Building functions are integrated with the concept (as in design matrix) and create circulation for the process of reflection.

The facades are also designed to mimic the form of a brain. In the final design, the ‘left-brain’ is represented with grid panels for logical thinking while the ‘right-brain’ is designed in parametric to present creativity. The ‘two brains’ collide and merge where the ramps are located.

Event Space: Shadow Electric Third Year Project 1 Tutor: Matthew McDonnell Individual Work The project is for the Shadow Electric event, holding annually at the Abbotsford Convent. The design specified on contrasting the experiences between past and future; between open space and secured. This includes contemporary structures to suit the ‘Shadow Electric’ event within the courtyard such as outdoor theatre and stages for the music festival which can be occupied by 250 peoples. In this case, the proposal includes a permanent open-air theatre structure (which connects two buildings on the site), a music stage, a minibar and designated area for socialisation.

ANALYSIS & CONSIDERATIONS
FORM FINDING
In order to create seats and staircase-like structure for the open-air theatre as well as blending into the landscape, the surface was sectioned. This creates an upper level and increases the surface areas for motions.

MOVEMENT, CIRCULATION & SPACE PLANNING
In terms of form-finding, the structure was outlined in the convex slope as mentioned previously. Hence, users can experience contrast and hierarchy while walking around the structure.

TECTONICS & PROTOTYPES Top plates without holes
Column that goes through panels
EXPERIENCES Designated holes in panels for columns
Zig zag to match panels together
Due to the massive structure, it was hard to process large panels (about 40m). Hence, the better way is to connect each panel and lock them together horizontally to meet the quality of a massive panel. In order to provide a structured system to carry loads, columns are used to hold the panels.

Final Model
Final Model
The panels were proposed as timber while the columns are hollow steel. As steel gives an impression of light but rigid, it is able to hold the structure in place and also create a ‘forest of steel’ underneath the staircaselike theatre.

‘Secret’ Pavilion Second Year Project 2 Tutor: Pham Tuan Viet Individual Work This project is to create a place to experience ‘secret’ with different expressions of tectonics. The sire is located at the Northest of Herring Island. This project intends for patrons to explore the secret within the site (Herring Island) and project (the secret of life which was presented as a tree for visitors to discover). The journey of exploring secret starts once visitors step on the island. Visitors have to explore the secrets of the island (identified as hidden aboriginals’ sculptures) before exploring the project. The project has taken ‘Pyramid’ as a form of the secret as Pyramid is seen as an open secret. The pyramid is extruded into the ground and divided into 3 levels, showing the above ground, (on) in the ground and underground. The whole pavilion is stressing on exploring secret spots hidden in the underground level that require people to find out themselves.

CONCEPTACLE MODEL

Conceptacle Model
Generating model from the idea of mass and light to explore the underground area more, than the surface on the ground. Hence, taking ideas from previous practices, using frame and infill to create private space (as ‘secret’), semi-open and open place (to contrast), mass as exterior/materiality and point/line/plane as a connection between the elements.
DESIGN CONCEPT
Pyramid
Deformed Pyramid
Bird Eye View
Above the ground is a glass and concrete pyramid that creates open spaces and antigravitiness that compare to other levels. The level on (in) the ground is half engraved into the ground and three sides covered and light can come in from one side. The underground is able for light to intrude through skylight and contrast to the level above ground with its heaviness. 15

Site Tectonics & Landscaping Second Year Project 1 Tutors: Phil Edwards & Patricia Robles Individual Work This studio is looking at the modification of landscape and ways to improve the quality of the land. Using the Farnsworth House as an example and located it in the Yarra to be modified into an accessible landscape. Ramps were designed to facilitate the movements of people along the landscape.

DRAWING TITLE: CONTOUR PLAN
Upon modifying the landscape, it shows a significant reduction in the volume of up to 5788m3. This leads to a distinguishable increase in surface area of topography at 670m2.
