01 ALICE IN 21TH VICTORIA PERIOD ARCHITECTURAL STORYTELLING Iowa State University Independent Study Advisor: Bosuk Hur Spring 2018

Renzo Piano said, "The World keeps changing, and architecture is mirroring it. Architecture is a mirror reflecting its society, community as well as individuals". Our society has innovated in its structure of society and economy by technology developments for a long time. Such social changes also result in certain types of hierarchy in authority. Some ancient architectures used to reflect the invisible structure of power in the space. It raises a question: how space can show the invisible authority especially in this 4th industrial revolution period. This project presents the relationship between space and authority controlling others easily. This project borrows a fairy tale, 'Alice in Wonderland', to satirize the contemporary society. Original characters in the world famous story represented the zeitgeist of the first industrial revolution period. This parody reveals that a similar hierarchy still exists even though the society structure has changed several times. The most fundamental idea of the project is the power embodied in the space. This wonderland is designed in a radial shape that every road is connected to arterial highways and those highways gather to a castle in the center. The castle is the highest place that dominates every information and technology in the wonderland. Interior of the castle is designed with one-way circulation system of a heart under control. In this world, space has power by creating panoptic surveillance, thorough security and crowds control.

Vertical Circulation System This system is designed with principle of steam engine. Linear motion by steam is converted into rotational motion by the crankshafts. Then, conveyor belt with elevator works by using two pulleys that rotate by the crankshafts.

Banishment System This system also has same priniple. It is designed to send someone away and not allow the person to come back. After closing door, injected steam pushes the box away. When the box stops upon exit of the tunnel, steam spreads to sky from the side chimneys. Then, door of box opens outward to throw away inside person.

02 TRANSITIONAL DENSITY ERASING BOUNDARY

Iowa State University Core Studio Advisor: Bosuk Hur Fall 2017 Site: Seattle Team: Youeun Lee, Van Ly, Jordan Washington

Boundary is the line discriminating between two spaces with opposing characteristics, which in our case, refers to the density of people in a hectic and busy program vs a calm thermal bath. The high density program in Seattle is associated with routinely busy spaces whereas the low density represents a relaxing atmosphere. Erasing boundary in our definition, means harmoniously arranging the two kinds of program within one structure so that the structure may not be very monochromatic, and each program can have both low and high density spaces. In this project, Erasing Boundary is represented with transitional density reflected by grid column system. The grid line is extended from an existing city pattern in the downtown Seattle. The columns are extruded from the nodes in the grid. The two types of density program blocks are inserted within a three-dimensional grid structure to control the density of the space and human’s behavior. A calm thermal bath has few columns, while a hectic program such as a gymnasium has more columns structure. This design makes visitors passing by the columns feel speed.

Chicago River

03 Co-GREEN URBAN DESIGN Iowa State University Optional Studio Advisor: Sungduk, Lee Spring 2017 Team: Chicago Team: Youeun Lee, Ilaria Mattioli, Yuqi Song

The riverside including our site has been changed since 1970s. Nowadays, the land of the riverside is developing as a mixed used area, while the main land-use was just for manufacturing in the past. As real estate developers expect that Goose Island will be an industrial hub within next 10 years(CURBED), our site in close proximity to the Goose Island would be a key point to connect both the riverside and Goose Island. Co-Green is a proposal of mixed use development for surrounding cultural districts such as Ranch Triangle, Wicker Park, Goose Island, Cabrini Green and so on. There are several programs: office, workshop place, market and commercial space, green house, hotel and square. Co-Green is designed in human scale in order to create 'walkable streets'. The primary buildings are designed with unit structure for commercial and public use. Engaging urban farm policy in Chicago, moreover, Co-Green project makes it possible for the residents to grow plants and do economic activities in markets and commercial places by renting the units. Thus, customers can enjoy the fresh vegetables in the local restaurants in Co-Green as well as just buy the produce. The units also can be used as their studios and galleries of local artists. This idea makes visitors experience various events, buy many products and enjoy green spaces while walking through the units.

River Front This area is adjacent to commercial and small garden place as well as leisure area. The Image shows people who is enjoying food, green space and water sports.

Central Square This is the largest place which can accommodate large number of people. It can be used for various purposes such as festival, concert, fair and so on.

04 TWO AXIES MIXED USE Iowa State University Core Studio Advisor: Jungwoo, Ji Spring 2016 Team: Forthworth, Texas Team: Youeun Lee, Boram Kim

One of the unique compositional characteristics of the site is Camp Bowie Blvd, which runs diagonally in the city. The Blvd causes this area to have two kinds of grid. One is a horizontal and vertical grid following most of the blocks and buildings, and the other is a diagonal grid following the camp Bowie. The area is divided into two parts based on the Blvd. The lower blocks are mostly museums and art spaces while the upper blocks are for mixed use and commercial areas. Main concept of this project is to create smaller version of cultural district of Fort Worth and Camp Bowie pass way in our site, considering such local characteristics. The first key point of our design is two kinds of grids or axes in order to guarantee fine views. Following x-y grid on the ground level, the building has direct views of the beautiful landscape of Modern Art Museum. The upper residential levels follow the diagonal axe in accordance with Camp Bowie Blvd, which allows a direct view of the Kimbell Art Museum. The second design idea is to make a part of the ground floor tightly tied up to the cultural environment of the area. By having public art studios for art activities and educations, the building comes to attract those who are interested in art, contributing to the local culture.
