EDITOR’S LETTER

Create. Connect. Inspire.

D

o you know what LEFAIR means? No, it’s not a French food magazine. LEFAIR is an acronym. Every letter has a meaning and they come together to form the name of the magazine you’re reading right now. The first letter L is for love which is the reason we are all here! I believe that love inspires creativity. Creativity is a means of expression and connection, so it’s full circle back to love. Most artists understand and create their life around the saying, “do what you love.” We are here to promote that love and energy. My main objective with LEFAIR was to create a platform for artists, writers, brands and readers to create, connect and inspire each other. The fun thing about LEFAIR is that you can read interesting interviews and look at the beautiful fashion editorials, but at the same time, you can shop. If you see something you like, click on it, then buy it! Instant retail gratification! For those of you who LOVE shopping, it’s a beautiful thing.

have come together to create LEFAIR. I am blessed to have a core team of amazing and talented ladies working with me. The beauty of these pages were made possible because of their passionate devotion to their work. Riley Yahr, Madeline Rosene and Hayley Kirksey truly do what they love and it shows! I’ve worked with these incredible women for more than a year and their talents and abilities never cease to amaze me! Hayley Kirksey started as an intern more than two years ago. Now, she is one of the main components of our success and, for this issue, she wrote Spring Fever and Sing Into Spring. Madeline Rosene continues to blow my mind with all of her passion and excitement for the magazine. She’s an incredible writer and she wrote the witty and entertaining interviews with Bebe Rexha, Jeans Watts and DJ Havana Brown in this issue. Her level of commitment is above and beyond and she’s continuously coming up with game-changing strategies and ideas. Madeline and I have some exciting new ideas and we can’t wait to show you in the summer issue! When I was looking for an art director and saw Riley Yahr’s work, I knew for sure that she was the one that was going to help me make my dream into reality. Her design sense is gorgeous and she’s so easy to work with. We literally read each other’s minds. Her creativity and aesthetic are truly essential parts of what makes LEFAIR beautiful. I hope you all enjoy the spring issue of LEFAIR Magazine! But just remember, the best is yet to come!

And if you love to travel (who doesn’t?), check out our destinations articles in every issue! You can click on the links in our travel stories and book hotels. Music and videos are a strong passion for us! We love the interviews that we have done with Bebe Rexha, Jean Watts and Havana Brown. You can also checkout Bebe in concert in our Behind The Scenes video, shot by Ben Shani! Everyone loves video content and we’re taking it to the next level. We have exciting things coming up in our summer issue! Readers will be able to shop directly from videos — putting create connect and inspire into motion!

With love, energy, and gratitude,

I want to express my deep gratitude to all of the people that

BEBE REXHA Unwrapped T he way the sun seeped into the LEFAIR North Hollywood loft and bounced off of the white walls would get any light junkie high. Singer/songwriter and popstar, Bebe Rexha, known for hits such as “I Got You” and G-Eazy’s “Me, Myself, and I”, sat on the white leather couch after a five-hour shoot. “I like you. You’re like me, bossy,” Bebe Rexha said to our Editor in Chief, Tracy Kahn. “But that’s okay,” she said, “Because that’s how you get what you want.”

THE ONE THING THAT I REALLY LOVE IN CERTAIN ARTISTS IS WHEN THEY’RE VERY REAL, HONEST AND RAW WITH THEIR LYRICS. MR: I feel like “Me, Myself, and I” has become a sort of mantra for people lately. Can you tell me why this sentiment is so important for people?

which is kind of obvious: when you find someone you really like and you say, I have been through the exact same thing. I can see that you’re hurt. I’ve been hurt too.

BR: I originally wrote it with Lauren Christie. It was just she and I at a piano. I was going through an interesting time in my life. I was in a very toxic relationship and I felt like I was basing all of my self-love through this one person. I wanted to break away from that relationship. We wanted to write a song about having your own back and not needing anyone but yourself. But it’s also a love song to music. It’s always been a constant in my life. I think people in general can relate to that. It really had an energy behind it.

MR: So it’s about empathizing.

MR: We love the song “I Got You” and we love the video. Where was that filmed? BR: The video for "I Got You" was filmed at the Salt Flats in California. It was a two and a half hour drive. We got there super early in the morning, around 6 a.m. and then we were there until 12 a.m. It started out freezing cold and pitch-black and then it got so hot and freezing at night. It was fun.

MR: What was the inspiration behind that? BR: The inspiration behind the video was earth, wind, and fire, like all of the things I would go through for you, but with more of an editorial vibe and fashion-y. The idea behind that video came from the meaning of the song,

BR: Yeah, like this time it’s different: I don’t want to play games. I want to take this seriously. Will you let your walls down because I got you—it’s that kind of record.

MR: Who have been some of your biggest music inspirations throughout your life? BR: My greatest music inspirations have been Lauren Hill, Destiny’s Child, Kanye West, Alanis Morissette, Bob Marley, Imogen Heap and Coldplay. The one thing that I really love in certain artists is when they’re very real, honest and raw with their lyrics. They’re able to kind of mold themselves. I feel that all great artists have been able to do that and that’s what I aspire to do.

MR: Alanis Morissette in particular is just so raw, especially with her lyrics. BR: Absolutely. I mean Alanis Morissette wrote songs about her ex. About giving a blowjob in a movie theatre so I feel that it doesn’t get more real than that. If you write a song about going to the club and partying (and you write it to get people to buy the record — I think that’s kind of fake), but if I’m really going to the club, then I’m going to write about that and it’s based on a true story.

THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF ME WRITING THE SONG IS BEING ABLE TO PERFORM IT. WRITING THE SONG IS HALF THE BATTLE. MR: Do you feel more like you’re a writer first or a performer first? BR: It’s weird because in my career path I always looked at writing as artistry and I feel like for me, they’re both one. So I feel like when I write, the whole purpose of me writing the song is being able to perform it. Writing the song is half the battle. But being able to write the video treatment and perform it live goes hand in hand with the lighting, outfits, everything. It’s a marriage. So for me I think it’s 50/50—I’m 50% songwriter and 50% artist. When I’m in the studio, writing the song, I see the music video immediately and I have to write the treatment. It’s not like I just write the song and I’m like, “here we go!” I have to figure out the idea behind it. I see the forest for the trees and I think that’s what artists do.

MR: You’ve written a lot of songs for other people too, so when your songs are picked up by other artists that must be validating but at the same time, do you ever wish they had done something differently or that the music video looked another way for instance? BR: Absolutely. When I have given away songs in

4 0 | L E FA I R MAG AZI NE

the past, I’ve never regretted giving a song away to anyone because every song has led me to where I am today, including “The Monster” or “Me, Myself, and I” with G-Eazy. I feel like everything was a step to get to where I am right now. Especially in the music business it’s important for me to be respected by my peers and after writing those records it was hard giving it away.

MR: I’m sure—it’s like a child in that way. BR: I’ve heard my version and then when you hear Rihanna singing “The Monster” or Selena Gomez doing a song you’re like, oh man, damn—I wish they would’ve done it like this but I’m like they’re artists and I really respect them so I want them to do that. I’m proud of giving those songs away because people have respected me for them and they’ve allowed me to do what I want with my artistry now so I’m really proud of those songs.

MR: Thank you for being here with us— the shoot looked fantastic. BR: I had such an incredible time! I found a rack and we were able to try on different things and throw things on it, so it was very fluid. The photographer, John Russo, was incredible. ■

Sayulita, Mexico

THE TROPICAL ADVENTURE Mexico’s hidden gem of Sayulita is a charming little beach town surrounded by the jungle, just 25 miles north of the more popular city Puerto Vallarta. Often referred to as “the crown jewel” of the region Riviera Nayarit, Sayulita is home to expats and locals alike, with a vacation reputation spreading rapidly. Try to visit sooner than later, while the community maintains its small town charm. The town center combines a variety of authentic Mexican food, international cuisine, trendy boutiques and unique souvenir shops. The cobblestone streets are loaded with colorful murals and brightly painted doors, providing enviable photoshoot backdrops. Just a few miles off the coast lies the Marietas Islands, a must-do day trip excursion. The small volcanic islands are world-famous for the “hidden beach,” only accessible by a forty-foot swim tunnel. But don’t worry, you won’t have to hold your breath, as there’s several feet of air between the surface and the cave wall (beware, claustrophobes!). Charter one of the many sailboat tours to reach the islands (some offering lunch and drinks, others focused on eco-sports cruise). If you want to escape the crowds, venture down to the isolated but beautiful Playa Carricitos. This secluded beach is less than hour hike from downtown Sayulita along a jungle trail that leads you directly to the essentially untouched and rugged beach. Be sure to pack water and snacks, as there are not any facilities nearby. Swim with caution; Carricitos waves are notoriously powerful, and there are no lifeguards!

Turks and Caicos Islands

THE SCENIC CARIBBEAN PARADISE The Turks and Caicos islands comprised of an archipelago of forty islands, only nine of which are inhibited. This slice of Caribbean heaven is a popular vacation spot for Hollywood, with Kylie Jenner and clan celebrating her 19th birthday there along with Kendall and the Hadid sisters. The claim to fame for Turks and Caicos is Grace Bay Beach, routinely voted as the “World’s Best Beach.” This seven-mile long stretch of pristine white sands is sprinkled with luxury resorts on the island Providenciales. It’s the perfect place to soak up the sun and lounge peacefully. After admiring the incredible turquoise waters from land, it’s time to dive in and explore beneath the surface. The world’s third largest barrier reef in the world hugs the Turks and Caicos islands. The most accessible is Smith’s Reef (on the edge of Grace Bay Beach) for world-class snorkeling alongside tropical fish, rainbow colored coral and sea turtles. If you’re interested in a bit of history, the Turks & Caicos National Museum on Grand Turk Island is worth a pitstop. Notable exhibits include shipwrecks from the 16th century and a collection of genuine “messages in a bottle” that floated to shore. The gift shop includes local seaglass jewelry for the perfect souvenir to bring home a slice of the island life.

Miami, Florida

THE POSH NIGHTLIFE SCENE Miami is the place to party! Between the private beach cabanas, rooftop lounges and glitzy nightclubs, it’s no wonder “The Magic City” is a hotspot for celebrities and influencers. South Beach is the most popular neighborhood for world-class nightlife and the two-mile long white sand beach alongside five-star resorts. South Beach is also home to the Art Deco Historic District, a neighborhood of buildings from the 19201940’s with a variety of architectural styles. The pastel colors, sleek chrome and overall retro-fabulous style is sure to catch your eye during the day, and the illuminating neon signs by night. Admire the ultimate elegance at the exceptional Versace Mansion (former home to the late Gianni Versace) now known as “The Villa Casa Casuarina” in the heart of the Art Deco District. Miami is particularly unique for its juxtaposition of historical structures, side by side with cutting-edge design. The Miami Design District is a creative neighborhood devoted to innovative fashion, design, art, architecture and dining. Indulge in the range of high-end shops including Christian Louboutin, Dior, Givenchy, among many more. Revel in the fine art galleries and museums and get inspired at the numerous home design showrooms. Take a break at a yoga studio, cafe, salon or get pampered in a spa. The design district has all things lush to offer. Stop by on a Wednesday evening and discover “The Market” with over forty vendors and live entertainment.

Santa Barbara, California

THE CLASSIC CALIFORNIAN GETAWAY With it’s Mediterranean-style architecture, year-round pleasant weather and the luscious green hillside bordering the shoreline, Santa Barbara is aptly nicknamed the “American Riviera.” This central California city is extraordinarily scenic whether you’re on land or sea, upon the merging of the Santa Ynez mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Soak up the “vitamin sea” while kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding or taking a surf lesson. Join in the iconic beach volleyball on East Beach, or rent a beach cruiser and wander along the sidewalk promenade of Cabrillo Boulevard. Along State Street, downtown Santa Barbara has everything to offer and more: name brand shops, petite boutiques, locally-owned eateries, delicious cafes and entertaining bars. On the ocean-side edge of downtown lies “The Funk Zone,” and up-and-coming artistic neighborhood. The Funk Zone boasts over twenty tasting rooms (both wine and craft beer), fourteen art galleries, and a handful of distilleries in an eclectic mix of renovated warehouses and industrial buildings. Take a couple hours to admire the Santa Barbara Mission, a historical and cultural landmark just a few blocks above downtown, dating back to 1786. Donate a few dollars for a self-guided tour inside, or simply enjoy the exterior and plan a picnic in the incredibly photogenic lawn. It’s an official “California State Historical Landmark” and well worth a few photos!

DJ HAVANA C

asually decked out in all black, accented with gold chains and dangly earrings, DJ Havana Brown walked into Le Pain Quotidien on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. She was accompanied by her dog, Ba*Bing (@BaBing_Yorkie). “He goes everywhere with me,” she said. I’ve scarcely seen a tan as perfect as Havana’s and I’ve never seen someone pull off a trucker hat with such style and sophistication. We ordered the daily special, matcha green tea with almond milk and we highly recommend it.

THAT’S IT! I’M GOING TO BE MYSELF AND PLAY HOW I WANT TO PLAY!

MR: Is there a specific experience you try to create for your audience when you perform? HB: I really want people to have a good time and be entertained. I want to take them away from any problems they have in their lives, out of that reality and make them feel good and happy. That’s why I love what I do and it’s the reason I do what I do.

MR: How did you learn to DJ? HB: Years ago, it feels like another lifetime, I lived in London and I was part of a group. One of the guys in the group was a DJ. We were signed to a big label but it fell apart. After the group broke up, I started clubbing every night and I fell in love with the idea of DJing. I didn’t pay rent for three months. I bought a pair of decks and I just practiced. I learned the basics from the guy in the group and I taught myself the rest. Then I got out into the clubs and figured out what sounds I liked most.

MR: Are there any DJs you look up to or admire? HB: DJ AM was a huge inspiration to me. I love all kinds of music and I don’t want to play just one genre. He played everything. He always had surprises and would throw in something you wouldn’t expect to hear. He’d drop an AC/DC track after he’d been playing hip-hop for 15 minutes. He’d play EDM, hip-hop, trap, anything and everything. It sounded great in the club. He really changed me as a DJ. When I started DJing in Australia, you either played hip-hop or dance music.

For some reason you didn’t combine the two genres. But I really wanted to! It wasn’t until I discovered him that I built up the courage to mix the two. When I started to do it, my following grew and I developed a name for myself nationally and internationally. I had this mix that started with Lady GaGa's "Just Dance” and then mixed with Lenny Karvits & Daft Punk. Everyone was so shocked. It went down very well. That’s when I thought, “That’s it! I’m going to be myself and play how I want to play!”

MR: Who are some of your favorite brands and designers? HB: Sass and Bide, Manning Cartel, there are a lot of great Aussie designers. My favorite designer of all time is Balmain. I’ve been obsessed for the last eight years. Every collection has been incredible and they’re always different. If I could just dress in Balmain every day, all day, I’d be a happy girl. It’s sexy but it’s a little masculine. It’s very rock-star. I’m not a soft floral girl. I like strong lines.

MR: What are you wearing right now? HB: Hood by Air jacket, Fendi boots, and a Country Road Australian t-shirt. I wear black hats all the time and I lose them so I have a whole bunch of black trucker hats that are all the same. Any other hat doesn’t really suit me. My partner gave me this chain for Christmas and he gave me this Cartier ring for Valentines Day. I don’t like taking on and off jewelry so I wear the jewelry from the people I love every day.

...AS SOON AS I PLAYED THE FIRST SONG, THE CROWD WENT NUTS.

MR: Who have been some of your favorite artists to collaborate with and/or tour with?

back to the US and doing some club shows in Atlantic City, Boston and Arizona.

HB: They’ve all been incredible. Every single one was an experience. I’ve had the most fun with the Latinos, Pit Bull and Enrique Iglesias. Pit Bull is everything people expect him to be. He lives in the moment, works extremely hard and he’s one of my favorite people. I keep in touch with him.

MR: Where are some of your favorite venues to perform?

MR: You’ve collaborated with Tove Lo and Bebe Rexha? HB: Actually I interviewed Tove Lo at the ARIA Awards. They’re the Australian version of the Grammys. I hosted the red carpet and I got to meet Tove Lo. I like her style of writing. It’s all about female empowerment and sexuality and I adore that. The way she writes her songs is incredible. I got to interview Robbie Williams as well. He’s so much fun. I’d love to hang out with him one day. Bebe Rexha was on my song, Battle Cry. I came across a song with DJ Savi and it was a song written by Bebe. It was very acoustic sounding and we did some simple production on it. The whole idea was to re-produce it. Savi and I worked on re-producing the track. There wasn’t too much work because it was already written. I don’t think anyone has heard the original. I think she’s an awesome artist. We’ve tried to meet up but we’re never in the same town at the same time.

MR: Are you performing at any EDM festivals this year? HB: I’m going back to Australia and I’m doing shows for five to six weeks. Then I’m going to Asia and doing some festivals there. After that, I’m coming

8 6 | L E FA I R MAG AZI NE

HB: When I toured with Britney Spears, the very first performance I did with her was in Paris. It was the most nerve-racking thing I have ever been through. It was such a big opportunity to be on tour with her. Twenty-four hours prior to that day, I didn’t know I was going on tour with Britney Spears. I flew over, I was a nervous wreck and her father came into the dressing room before I went on stage. Mind you, I was already feeling pressure to entertain when he said, “Just so you know, the 50,000 people out there are very quiet. I mean, you can hear a pin drop. We really need you to get the energy up!” It was the Circus tour. I had to go under the stage and rise up on to it. I remember that moment in the Bercy Arena. I was that particular of mix of excited and scared as I rose up and thought, why did I do this to myself? But as soon as I played the first song, the crowd went nuts. It was a great crowd and atmosphere. They asked me to join them on their tour in Europe and Australia. I felt incredibly proud and satisfied. It couldn’t have gone any better. It’s one of my favorite moments in my life so far.

MR: What’s next for you? Are you releasing new music soon? HB: I’m making new music. I’m in the studio working on a new sound. I’m going to try something different. I’m playing less EDM. Right now, my set is fifty-fifty, hip-hop and EDM, but I want to try new sounds. I’m still in the early stages of working in the studio. I can’t say much more but I’m feeling good about it. ■

JH: How did you get discovered? SL: I was stopped in an airport with my family when I was 14. The agent had me come meet with the rest of the agency, and a year later I decided I wanted to give modeling a try and signed with them!

JH: Are there any models that you look up to? SL: I admire Victoria's Secret Angels because of how much self-discipline and hard work they go through to maintain their bodies and careers. Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepoel, and Rosie Huntington-Whitely are my favorites.

JH: You have over 1.6 million followers and such a great engagement rate. What’s your secret to a successful Instagram? SL: I don’t know what the secret to a successful Instagram is, but I think people follow you when they’re interested in your life! I try to post a variety of photos and not be too repetitive, as well as keeping it organic, natural, and being myself. I don’t really have a planned out feed. I pretty much just post what I like, and try not to post too much of the same thing.

camera, I love wearing men’s jackets, hoodies, t-shirts and even sweats.

JH: What are your favorite places to shop in your city of LA? SL: I’m more of an online shopper. I like seeing clothes on someone without having to try them on. Every now and then I’ll go shopping at the Third Street Promenade, Beverly Center, or Rodeo Drive if I feel like splurging.

JH: What’s your beauty regimen like? SL: My beauty routine is all about moisture. I moisturize constantly, usually after I wash my face with a gentle cleanser, before bed and when I wake up. I also try to use simple products like aloe, jojoba oil, and other natural moisturizers.

JH: Do you have any beauty secrets? SL: I put Vaseline on my eyelashes at night. It makes your lashes grow like crazy and they don’t get brittle after wearing mascara all day.

JY: What is your favorite way to stay fit?

JH: Which Instagram accounts do you love? SL: @Shitmodelmgmt @overheardla and more like that... I love funny accounts!

SL: I love taking exercise classes because it pushes me harder than disciplining myself at the gym. I love hot yoga and barre classes.

JH: Describe your personal style in 3 words.

JH: How do you treat yourself ?

SL: Easy, comfortable, versatile.

SL: I love to treat myself by ordering in Thai food and watching movies in bed!

JH: What’s one item in your closet you would never throw away? SL: A plain black body suit. It’s my go-to under jeans when I want something easy.

JH: Who are your favorite fashion designers? SL: Right now I love Vetements, Celine, and Tommy Hilfiger.

JH: What do you like to wear both on and off-camera? SL: Boy clothes! I’ve shot in men’s wear a couple of times and it looks really cool and high fashion. Off-

JH: What are your goals for your modeling career? SL: There are a few brands specifically that I aspire to work for, but my goal for my modeling career is to work as hard as I can and see how far it takes me. I want to start walking in more shows, shooting more editorials and large campaigns.

JH: What would be your advice for someone who wants to start modeling? SL: My advice is to work hard and take care of yourself! Health, happiness, and confidence are the most attractive traits to have and they will get you far. ■

The festival linked up with supermodels Alessandra Ambrosio, Kendall Jenner and Emily Ratajkowski (just to name a few) to officially announce the inaugural Fyre Festival on their Instagrams. Now, Fyre is trickling out their impressive headliners one-by-one, beginning with Kanye West’s group G.O.O.D. Music Family, and Diplo’s DJ trio Major Lazer. Expect a fabulous weekend alongside the festival elite.

At the event, you can keep fit with a variety of yoga classes known as “Yoga Roo” and the 5k race “Run Roo.” Bonnaroo also aspires to be the greenest festival to set the standard in sustainability and hosts “Planet Roo” where non-profits exhibit and share their mission to go green.

WHAT TO BRING

Driving out to the farm will no doubt be gridlock traffic, so fill up your tank before you start the trip. Rain is not uncommon for June in Tennessee, so pack rain gear just in case! Bring your favorite athleisure outfits if you’re planning to participate in Yoga Roo or Run Roo.

TICKETS

General 4-day passes go for $325, but $555 to include a shuttle service from Nashville. VIP Passes are available for $1030 and accommodate for VIP Lounges, preferred parking, exclusive viewing areas, free merch and yoga classes on-site as well as a VIP pre-party before the festival. ■

he’s electric: sparks were flying as Jean Watts, singer/songwriter and makeup vlogger, spoke with LEFAIR Magazine about her new up and coming makeup brand, Volt. Jean left all of our electric charges positive with her soulful voice and upbeat attitude.

MR: Jean, are you a Chicago girl or are you a California girl? JW: I would definitely say that I am both. Even before I knew what California was about, I was always very spiritual and very about energies—and there’s a lot of people in California that are like that. I’m definitely a Midwestern girl at heart though.

MR: You’re launching a new makeup brand called Volt. How did you come up with that name? JW: My last name is Watts and because of electricity I use lightning bolts in everything that I do. I thought that it would be very cool to use Volt. First it’s going to start as a makeup company. I have an entertainment group called Voltage Entertainment and I like to use electricity-based things.

MR: What products is Volt planning on coming out with? JW: First it’s going to be cosmetics. We’re going to start with lipstick and lip liners. Eventually, I really want to do a clothing line to keep making it a bigger and bigger thing. I want to keep branching and branching and make it bigger than that, so Volt becomes a huge entity.

MR: You’re really in to branding yourself and you’ve done an amazing job with that. How did you start getting in to makeup? JW: I’ve always been in to makeup! I used to wear glitter for lip liner in 4th grade and mascara just on the outside of my lashes. Mind you I was always a painter and a drawer and portraits were always my favorite thing. Actually, when I was a little girl, my mom had a make up girl called Making Faces. Every makeup person knows that book! It’s a very big 1990’s book and I used to retrace and draw all the faces in there and it’s a makeup book so I naturally developed a knowledge of how to do makeup at a very young age.

MR: Your parents were cool with you wearing that crazy glitter makeup to school? JW: No, no! My dad hated it—he was really mad and a lot of times I would sneak out the door and do it on the bus. My mom was like, “Let her be creative!” My dad was not having it.

MR: You’re also a musician. You recently did a cover of “Fake Love” by Drake. What inspired that? Why does that song resonate with you? JW: "Fake Love" is something, especially in LA, that you deal with. You deal with people who pretend to be your friends or pretend to be there for you and you realize that there’s always a secret agenda to those things and it wears you down after a while. You start feeling lonely after a while so when that song came out I was like, done, let’s do it! I love Drake.

MR: You play piano beautifully. How long have you been doing that for? JW: Thank you! My dad was a musician. He was a piano player so I was brought into it. I’ve been playing since I was three. I took time to finally start writing when I was ten. Coldplay released “Clocks” two years later. For some reason I really adapted to their music and their writing style. I really love it. Even though what I do now is pop music, a lot of things are accidently inspired by Coldplay.

MR: Are you going to any music festivals this year? JW: Yes! For the first time I’m finally going to Coachella, which I’ve been wanting to go to for three years. It’s finally happening! I just found out today that Beyoncé is not attending—she’s pregnant, understandable—but she’s going to be there next year. I’ve got to go next year again! I’m really stoked about this year though.

MR: What’s next in the works for you? You’ve got the makeup brand—what else music-wise? JW: We actually just got done filming the music video to my next single called “Blow”. It’s our first song that’s going to be on the EP. It’s my favorite song— one of them. A lot of people like the song. I’m very stoked about that. The EP is finally getting finalized on the mixing and mastering and we’re going to release the EP within a month! Finally. It’s been forever and it’s been a ton of work and it takes so much patience. It takes a long time to do this. We’re going to let it out and I’m going to start doing live shows. ■

FIND YOUR WHY AT

Wonderland Y Writer Madeline Rosene @madelinerosene

ou don’t have to travel down the rabbit hole to get to Wonderland Beauty Parlor. This unsuspecting beauty hot spot located in the heart of NYC’s Meat Packing District has a cult-like following of some of New York’s top social media influencers, models, and other creatives. The fiercely loyal clientele subscribe to owner Michael Angelo’s visionary approach to beauty— whimsical, smart, and fun. Speaking of whimsical and smart, Sarah Rappolt, stylist, educator and inspiration to the influencers, is Wonderland’s newest fulltime addition. Brought on to the creative team not only because of her talent and extensive list of influential clients but also to compose an education program for the salon and its stylists.

the products I use at my station. We just got this new line called Christophe Robin—they’re amazing. The hair care line is designed specifically for color treated hair, even their volumizing shampoo. You can use it on non-color treated hair too. They have this salt scrub that has actual chunks of salt in it. It’s very exfoliating. We’re going to use that on you today!

MR: Where did you did you go to beauty school?

My education began with Laura Denny (@ldizzzy) who applied a gloss to my then fine, greasy, knotted hair. LD: Normally, a gloss would be a really fast color but we do a gloss differently here. We use Framesi it’s an Italian brand. They have a demi-permanent line that has the same effect as a gloss but it’s better for your hair with its fatty acids, amino acids, and coconut oil. It’s like half treatment and half color. You’ll really feel the difference.

MR: Do you get to pick the products you use? LD: Yes. I get to pick

LD: I went to Paul Mitchell in Connecticut. As far as education goes, they’re one of the best. Their curriculum is more concerned with the whole person and the whole look rather than just hair.

MR: Wonderland works with a lot of social media influencers, models, and creatives. How did it get this kind of following? LD: Michael Angelo got the name “model whisperer”. I don’t really know who coined that or how he got the name, but he can visualize what someone’s overall look is and he can see it intrinsically. When styling models, you have to know who their audience is. It can’t just be, “Okay, this person needs to be blonde!” Their look has to be perfect right down to the tone and shade. We also have a knack for being able to do a turn around really quickly. But we don’t just work with models and bloggers. We see a lot of creative directors, film industry professionals, and artists. You can’t really live in New York City without interacting with loads of creative people on a daily basis.

MR: Does it get really busy during Fashion Week? LD: It’s actually busier the month leading up to fashion week. They fly girls in from all over the place—they want to get this girl in that show. The cut and color is a big deal during castings. Wonderland is a very small salon, so we don’t prep for shows. I used to think that being a session stylist is what it means to “make it,” but I don’t feel that way anymore. I like to have my clients that I know and build relationships with them. I like to do people’s hair because it’s how they want to look on a regular basis rather than just for a shoot that someone else envisioned for them, but I love working with models because a lot of them become clients and friends.

The agencies usually dictate the look before their models come in we work with Ford, Wilhelmina, Muse, and Silent. Usually we’ll have to completely change their look because they have a casting in two hours and I’ll have to be like, “Okay, what can I get done in this amount of time to make them look the best they can for this shoot?” The model world has so many different aspects with commercial models—bright, blonde, natural and beachy and then more high-end fashion models doing more creative stuff where it’s okay to have jet black, funky red, or white blonde hair. I did a mullet on this one girl recently. It was completely awesome.

After my gloss and salt scrub, Sarah Rappolt ushered me over to her station. You don’t just feel like you’re in good hands when you sit down in Sarah’s chair. You feel like you’re in an artist’s hands, transcending feelings of safety and comfort, to an absolute certainty that you will leave her chair a more beautiful version of yourself. “Choppy layers that frame your face, give you more volume and make your head feel lighter, right?” Sarah said.

MR: You recently changed salons, what have you brought with you to Wonderland? SR: A lot of what I bring to the company is education. I bring a formal way of teaching and training. Michael brought me on a year ago to develop their curriculum in house. Some salons focus around a set SARAH RAPPOLT of rules and standards— cut and shape this way and color that way. But when you think about it, the things that make a difference are not actually what you do but why you do them so then there are salons that are focus more on an idea. Our idea is “we want everyone to feel happy and beautiful

when they leave”. After working with them for about a year and meeting all of their staff, I realized the energy here is really great and people are really open to learning and developing so I decided to make a switch.

MR: How did you forecast that salons needed to incorporate social media in order to be successful? SR: Salon culture has always been very concerned with what’s going on with magazines and publishing because that’s how people find salons. With social media, it’s like that but it’s more immediate. Bloggers are sort of the new editors and I started realizing it when bloggers were sitting front row at fashion shows and a lot of the editors were in the back. So for me, that shows that they seem to be more influential. The market is so saturated with products and people, that when you find someone you can trust, (i.e. a blogger), it make a big difference. I want those people in my chair because first of all, they’re very influential within their communities and secondly, they’re mostly young girls who haven’t been through the wringer yet with figuring out what they want their look to be and they need someone to give it to them. MR: Can you look at someone and know how to craft her image? SR: Yes and no, what I do know is that being attractive is very important to people. I lived in East Africa for a while. I lived in a very small village. One of the things I noticed there was that even though they only ate once a day and their children were dying of malaria and they didn’t have electricity, the women still took time to color their hair. So to me, that shows that there is really something important about feeling attractive and that’s great. It’s a part of survival. That makes some feel good but I think there are a lot of different kinds of attractive so when I meet someone, I talk to them and get to know them. A super layered cut may look good on you but if you give it to someone who isn’t into it, what’s the point? You have to feel comfortable and get in touch with your definition of attractive and I help people figure out what that is for them. Hair is an accessory and it needs to have movement and versatility. It needs to say who you are.

It's the process. It's the heart. It's the soul of every action you take that makes the difference in life.

KAYLA SEAH

Photographer Erin Leydon @erinleydon

BLOGGER @NOTYOURSTANDARD NOTYOURSTANDARD.COM

MR: “…the things that make a difference are not actually what you do but why you do them…” How does this concept play into your life and work? SR: Especially in New York City, the result is what people tend to focus on. But I find that if the work put in has no meaning, neither does the result. The younger generations seem to know this instinctively these days. Your “why”, or the reason you do something, should be the most important. It's the process. It's the heart. It's the soul of every action you take that makes the difference in life. So how does that relate to my job? I feel that great hair makes people feel good. It let's people feel whole and confident. It let's people feel good about themselves and feel confident in loving in their why. My job is to make you look your best, so that the outside matches the inside. Good haircuts are cuts that accentuate the features you love about yourself. Is it your lips, eyes, cheekbones? Is it something super structured like your everyday life? Does it have texture and movement like your weekends? Does it remind you of your mom in the 70s? It’s whatever you want to feel. It's

creating energy. Everything flows from outside to inside and out again. There is a reason people say they don't feel like themselves when they get a bad cut or color. Think about it. Your image is what people see and decide if they want to know your “why.” For me, my “why” is to be of service to others. Together we make the world go round, especially in this political climate. I want everyone to express themselves passionately. To be able to do that and accept others doing it will bring us closer together as a species. Everyone has worth. Everyone has a why. I want to help them get there. ■ For more information, visit wonderlandbeautyparlor.com LE FA I R MA G A Z I NE | 1 1 3

Creativity is Connection

Writer Brooke Landon @mindartists

W

hen we are creative, we choose to connect to a larger part of ourselves that transcends the ego, labels, and physical world. We tap into this energy that creates magic and turns nothing into something that our senses can translate into a beautiful masterpiece. We were born to create. By neglecting our natural creative abilities and passions, we cut ourselves off from this connection. Furthermore, not using or finding a creative outlet, we cut ourselves off from happiness. If we want to find more fulfillment and happiness in our lives, we have to find a way to create and connect. To find the connections, there are a few questions to ask ourselves and reflect upon to get on track.

YOU ARE ALWAYS CREATING, BUT ARE YOU BEING CREATIVE? Are you consciously and creatively designing your life, or letting other people or circumstances create it for you? If we have been choosing the latter, and focusing and behaving in ways that cut us off from our connection based on what has already manifested, or worrying about something happening, we must find a creative outlet to change that momentum and energy. Life is an always-evolving masterpiece. Choose to be the artist, not the art consumer.

WHO'S TO SAY WRITING A GRATITUDE LIST, MEDITATION, OR TUNING UP YOUR CAR, IF YOU’RE INTO THAT KIND OF THING, ISN'T A FORM OF CREATIVITY? We don't have to be painters or musicians in order to be artists of life. Connecting through creativity is about producing or doing something that did not exist before, and in doing so, you make yourself feel better, and in turn, better the world.

“Creativity gives hope that there can be a worthwhile idea…gives the possibility of some sort of achievement to everyone…makes life more fun and more interesting.” -Edward de Bono

HOW CAN YOU RELEASE RESISTANCE? CREATIVITY IS A FORM OF RELEASING RESISTANCE. HOW IS THE HAPPIEST PERSON YOU KNOW LIVING THEIR LIFE? I think it’s safe to say they are creatively designing their life, not letting their life create them. Our happiness is a direct reflection of how creative and connected we are. If we cut ourselves off from that connection, we will feel a disconnect between who we are, or how we are living our lives, and how we truly wish to be. To find our place in the world, we must express ourselves creatively in ways that brings us as much joy as possible, so we can tap into our true potential, be the creators that we are intended to be, and find peace and fulfillment in our lives.

1 1 4 | L E FA I R MAG AZI NE

The more we release resistance, the more we connect and align with the energy which was involved in the creation of all of the beauty, success, and joy, that has ever existed. The more we tune into that energy, the more creativity, clarity, and joy we will attract into our lives. With so many ways to be creative and connect, why not start today? What can you do to add more happiness and connection into your life? If you're looking for more connection, follow your joy towards a path of creativity, and enjoy the creation of your connection to a more fulfilling life. ■
