WRAP IT UP
WRAP IT UP Make your Christmas gifts extra special this year with these eco-friendly ideas from interior stylist, Helen Orrock.
WRAP IT UP
IT WAS REPORTED THAT US BRITS THREW OUT AN ESTIMATED 108 MILLION ROLLS OF CHRISTMAS WRAPPING PAPER LAST YEAR. Even the well-intentioned among us, are unaware that the wrapping paper we put in recycling isn’t actually recyclable if it contains plastic, dye, foil, glitter or leftover sticky tape. Thankfully there are lots of other options out there. With this in mind, we asked local interior stylist, Helen Orrock for her advice on keeping it eco-friendly as well as some ideas to give our gifts a unique edge.
“Decide on a colour scheme and stick to it,” advises Helen. “ I kept it
simple by wrapping my gifts in recycled brown paper from WHSmith (£3.99 for a 12m roll) before adding strips of silver kraft paper from Waterstones (£3.99 for a 3m roll) for a modern minimalist look.”
Here’s Helen’s top tips on recyclable Christmas wrapping: Kraft paper Use kraft paper instead of traditional wrapping paper - it’s recyclable and biodegradable. Biodegradable tape Consider using biodegradable paper tape for your wrapping as an alternative to sticky tape. Regular tape prevents the kraft paper being recycled because it doesn’t biodegrade.
“ I added lengths of black satin ribbon from John Lewis & Partners (prices from £2.15 for 5m) and tied my parcels up with black garden twine from Sostrene Grene (£1.08 for 55m).”
Twine For tying up your parcels, use natural jute twine. Not only does it look good, it’s also great for the environment and will biodegrade along with the kraft paper.
“Bring the outdoors in and add it to your gifts for a classy and fragrant twist. I headed out to the garden and picked some fresh sprigs of pine and snowberries to add to my presents. You could also use a sprig of Rosemary, which gives off a lovely smell or tie some sticks of cinnamon together.”
Natural decorations To decorate your gifts, think about using natural materials such as dried fruits, cinnamon sticks, bark stars and fresh greenery from the garden. Rosemary, pine or eucalyptus look great and smells amazing too! Follow Helen on Instagram @theinteriorslady for more style inspiration.
