Layering up Nordic influences Keeping up with the ever changing pace of trends is sometimes hard, especially when it comes to the home. But for this season the popular Scandi-look is still bang on trend. With 2019 seeing a move towards fresh, natural materials such as stone, copper, concrete and granite. This is perfect for this trend and easy to achieve with a few simple updates from the fantastic range of home stores that we have in the centre of Nottingham. Scale up the Nordic vibe by adding layers with different textures to give the look depth – helping to create a welcoming and relaxing space. Last year the look was filled with Bo-ho chic, global-inspired patterns. This year it’s more about simple, understated pattern.

Charity Shop Challenge
BEFORE
We challenged four local bloggers to hunt down a pre-loved treasure from one of the charity shops here in Nottingham city centre and upcycle it into a piece for today’s home. Giving them a budget of £50 each to buy and upcycle, here’s how they got on... Hi, I’m Mike a craft fanatic from Nottingham. I’ve been running my craft blog, The Crafty Gentleman, for five years now. Over this time, I’ve learnt that sometimes the very best projects start with what’s already there. I’m talking upcycling. I headed to Sue Ryder in Hockley, on the hunt for a unique piece of furniture in need of some TLC. I soon spotted the perfect piece: a small, squat 1970’s coffee table. It had a dark wooden base in an unusual shape, with a glass table top. You can find lots more free DIY tutorials on Mike’s blog thecraftygentleman.net, or on Instagram @thecraftygentleman.
HERE’S HOW I DID IT
THE TOOLS
1. Clean it. I gave the table a really good

2. Make a stencil. I cut a herringbone

scrub and then polished the top with glass cleaner.
pattern out of sticky-back vinyl; I stuck this directly onto the glass top, ready for the etching process.
3. Etch the glass. Quickly but carefully,
I applied etching cream to the uncovered sections of glass. After five minutes, I scraped the cream off (back into the pot for reuse) and gave the glass a good rinse in cold water. Then came the fun bit; peeling off the stencil to see the results!
Vinyl tape, £8.99, (Mike’s own) Etching cream, £6.57, (Mike’s own) Glue dots, £1.95, Poundland, Wheeler Gate
4. Remove the yellowed suckers. 5. Wax the base. Finally, I gave the base a
coat of wax. Not only did this help to bring out the colour of the wood, it also filled in the deeper scratches and scuffs.
AFTER Jenn is 34 and lives in Nottingham. She has been a selfconfessed shopaholic for as long as she can remember but likes to think that she is savvy with it, with a large proportion of her wardrobe and home interiors being vintage or second hand. I visited Sue Ryder Vintage and Retro in Hockley and within minutes of being in the store I found this black iron magazine rack. It’s so heavy and would have cost a lot more to buy first hand – it just needed a bit of TLC. You can follow Jenn on Instagram @trash_i_treasure
THE TOOLS Magazine rack, £10, Sue Ryder Vintage & Retro, Goose Gate, Hockley Spray paint, £7.99, Wilko, intu Broadmarsh Gold foil, £3, (Jenn's Own) 10
BEFORE
HERE’S HOW I DID IT 1. Clean it. I gave it a really good wash with warm soapy water. 2. Spray. I took the magazine rack outside and gave it two layers of pink spray paint.
3. Apply gold foil. Next I added a
thin layer of sizing solution with a brush to the areas of the magazine rack that I wanted to highlight with gold foil. I waited a few minutes until the sizing felt sticky and then I added the gold foil, using the tips of my fingers to lay it on top of the metal before using a clean, dry paintbrush to work in the gold foil.

I’m Mackenzie, a 25-year-old freelance copywriter and blogger based here in Nottingham who is openly addicted to Instagram, organisation and all things monochrome. Living in a one-bedroom flat means seating and storage are both pretty hard to come by so when I set eyes on this foldaway stool in Sue Ryder Vintage and Retro, it seemed like the perfect solution.
That meant I needed to style it so I headed to Søstrene Grene, where I picked up the tray, tea light holders and free- standing print to decorate it with. Inspired by their craft section I also came away with two balls of yarn and a pack of geometric beads which I used to make the tassels on the left-hand corner thanks to a few step-by-step YouTube tutorials.

Jess is a lifestyle blogger and freelance social media manager who lives in Nottingham. She regularly writes about fashion, interiors and the best brunch spots in the city! There was one thing that was definitely missing from our house when it came to entertaining and having guests around; a dedicated drinks trolley to really get the party started! Check out Jess’s blog at jesswho.co.uk and follow her on Instagram @jesswhoblog
HERE’S HOW I DID IT I decided to re-purpose the stool as a side table, making it a semi-permanent part of the furniture which could still be used for extra seating as and when we needed it.
AFTER
It just goes to show what a few pounds and a little bit of creativity can do.
HERE’S HOW I DID IT 1. Paint it. I applied two coats
using a furniture paintbrush directly onto the wood.
AFTER
2. The finishing touch. I added
a shaker style drawer pull from John Lewis which made the trolley look much more expensive and I removed the plastic wheels.
3. Style it.
To style the piece up I added some pretty glasses and bar essentials.

Make a splash for less than £100 You don’t need to spend a fortune to spruce up your bathroom this Easter as YouTube vlogger Holly of all Trades shows us. Hi! My name is Holly and I have a YouTube Channel called Holly of all Trades where, as the name suggests, I make videos about all sorts of things: DIY, crafts, lifestyle, fashion and everything in-between. I’m all about inspiring the average person to be creative and make cool stuff even if you feel a bit nervous about it. Life is a beautiful creative mess!
THE BATHROOM! The room everyone dreads making over! When we moved into our house in West Bridgford six months ago my only stipulation was we needed to get rid of the hideous peachy creamy tiles, the dodgy over the bath shower and cheap linoleum flooring in our bathroom. Cut to six months later… and the bathroom looks EXACTLY the same. You see one of the projects we have in mind for the house is a loft conversion, which we can’t quite afford to do yet, but in time the steps of the loft conversion will come down right to where the bathroom is, making it pointless to spend any money on a new bathroom. Instead, armed with a £100 budget, I headed into Nottingham city centre to find myself a few bits and pieces to spruce up the space and distract me from the horrendous tiles! My first thought was the colour scheme. The peachy tiles are not the nicest of colours but I thought a beautiful shade of sage green and some black would distract nicely from them but at the same time complement the colour.
hollyofalltrades.com 12
Luckily every shop I went to had a plethora of options to choose from. I also wanted to add in some textures. I went for a mixture of plant pots, vases, candles and a mirror that had interesting shapes and textures to add a bit of interest to a very bland bathroom! Before I knew it, my £100 was gone and I had bags and bags of beautiful products from a variety of shops in Nottingham. The first step when I got home was to DIY these hanging plant pots out of some 60p terracotta pots from Wilko at intu Broadmarsh and some black spray paint. I then made the macramé hangers out of some old string I had lying around (loads of tutorials available on You Tube) and I think they came out really well, with the plus side of disguising an ugly old extractor fan! All that was left to do was to style the room with the rest of the products and my £100 makeover was done in an afternoon! Quick, cost effective and beautiful, even if I do say so myself!

We asked local blogger and recipe creator Lucy from Lucy and Lentils to cook up some of her favourite dishes to show off some of the best designs we have here in Nottingham. Why not try making Lucy’s Sweet Potato Tagine for yourself and serving it up in one of the colourful pieces of crockery that we found on the high street. “With the weather warming up, I love having a tapas selection with friends. Where hands are dashing around the table, taking spoonfuls of this and that, plates clinking and the buzz of excitement hanging in the air. I’ve popped together a simple spread of sweet potato tagine, rice dishes and even a sneaky pre-cooked rice and lentils bag so you’re not spending the entire afternoon in the kitchen. I’ve used a Ras El Hanout blend from local business owner Freshly Spiced which works perfectly with this North African inspired recipe.”
INGREDIENTS
METHOD
2 large sweet potato
Dice the onion then add to a large pot (preferably with a lid) with a glug of olive oil and gently fry until softened
4 cloves garlic 1 large white onion 1 small bulb fennel 400g tin cooked lentils
While the onions are cooking, roughly dice the sweet potato into 5cm cubes, bite size chunks
250g passata
Mince the garlic cloves then add them to the onions, fry for a further 1 minute then add the diced sweet potato
1 heaped tbsp Ras El Hanout spice blend
Pour in the passata then refill the carton with water and add to the pot and bring to a simmer
Large pinch salt 1 tbsp olive oil Sprinkle 1 tbsp sesame seeds sprinkled Toss ¼ cup pomegranate seeds Slice the stalk of the fennel bulb
Add the Ras El Hanout spices followed by the lentils and allow to gently bubble for around 25 minutes until the sweet potato is softened Serve up, then garnish with the pomegranate seeds, sesame seeds and thinly sliced leftover fennel Enjoy served with fluffy rice, olives, artichokes and harissa.
