Welcome

A very warm welcome to The Television Workshop’s 2020 play season.

This is the end of a gruelling process that begins in September of each year, when the over16 group all perform monologues, which they have chosen and prepared, to a panel of tutors and directors. From here they are split into four casts to start work on the productions.

It’s an enormous learning curve and a crucial part of their Workshop training; to get to grips with the journey from page to stage, to adapt to new styles and new people, and to take on complex characters to tell fascinating stories. Here is the result of that work, finally being put in front of the people it was meant for… you.

It’s another diverse and challenging season for us, and one I’m thrilled to share with you. First up is the tender naturalism of Simon Stephen’s family drama On The Shore Of The Wide World, somewhat unbelievably the first time Workshop has tackled a Stephens play.

This is followed by a roaring fireball of a history lesson in the shape of Emilia by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, a production we

are proud to say is one of the first since its premiere at The Globe in 2018 and acclaimed West-End run in 2019. Just a week off to catch your breath before Roald Dahl’s The Witches takes to our stage in this year’s epic family show of terror and trickery, directed by Terry Haywood making a welcome debut as a fully-fledged Workshop director.

The season comes to a powerful climax (and more witches) with our twist on Shakespeare’s infamous tragedy Macbeth, for which we are excited to be working alongside Confetti and Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art & Design. The stunning efforts of the cast and creative team will transform the incredible Metronome venue into a battleground for the murder and madness to come.

Thank you for supporting local live theatre, and the work we do as a charity to offer quality acting training to young talent, no matter what their background or financial situation. But I know I speak for most Workshoppers when I say it’s about more than acting and exploring a career in the industry; It’s about exploring humans and their stories, making inspiring creative work as a team, and sharing it with our community with pride.

Coming back to Workshop last year after fifteen years away was a joy, so when Nic asked if I’d do it again there was no hesitation this time. The opportunity to work with such incredibly talented young people is a gift to any director.

To then be surrounded by such a hard-working backstage team too is amazing. Special thanks to Hannah Jeffery who has come back to design for me again, to Jim Tomlinson who builds the sets for us, and to Cameron Foster who is assistant directing this year and has done a fantastic job. them enough. I’m pleased that the hard work of my fabulous cast had matched them hour for hour, which is the best way to say thank you.

On The Shore of the Wide World is a whole wide world away from Posh that I directed last year. 2019 was personally a very tough year for me but I learnt a huge amount about family, love, and not always getting everything right. This is a play about all of those things, about sometimes feeling alone even when you’re surrounded by others, but most of all about hope and positivity for what’s to come.

Director’s Notes

“We are only as powerful as the stories we tell.”

- Emilia.

Early in the rehearsal process members of our all female cast began to recount experiences that were similar to those of Emilia Bassano’s. They could all very much relate to her struggle. Emilia lived over 400 years ago. Women had very few rights and were not allowed to publish in 16th England. Some things have changed but the extent to which Emilia’s struggles resonated with the cast highlights how much further we still have to go.

thought of being able to tell this urgent story. It was intoxicating. And it was quickly joined by a huge sense of responsibility. Not only to the legacy of Emilia and to the countless women throughout history who have had to fight to be heard and to whom we are indebted for the openings they chiseled out, but to those who still find their voices ignored and silenced, their bodies demeaned, used and scarred, their talents disregarded, their ideas mocked and their whole selves diminished and abandoned.

I hope we go some way to living up to that responsibility and that we persuade you to take some more of it on for yourselves.

Director’s Notes

After being a lifetime member of the workshop and then becoming a teacher here, I have now been given the opportunity to direct my first Workshop play season production.

The Witches was the one that ticked all the boxes. It’s funny, scary and full of character, making it an exciting prospect and a great challenge to pull off.

The Witches started off as the famous book written by the magnificent Roald Dahl it has also been adapted into a film as well as stage versions.

It’s been six years since Workshop’s last Shakespearean adventure for play season, when we presented (Queen) Lear at the old Vintage Warehouse. Now, just across the road, a different incredible and challenging venue plays host to Workshop’s first Macbeth.

I have said to my cast that if you can pull off a Shakespeare, you’re ready for anything as an actor; the skills you need in clarity of storytelling

Joe Dempsie

Vicky McClure

A BAFTA winner for Best Actress in 2011. Vicky made her screen debut as Ladine in Shane Meadows’ A Room For Romeo Brass (1999), before career-defining roles as Lol in This Is England and DI Kate Fleming in Line of Duty. Other credits include Broadchurch, True Love and Svengali. She also starred alongside our workshoppers in recent Radio 4 drama Roots.

One of the big stars of Game of Thrones in his role as Gendry (he even survived until the end). Joe first found success starring in award-winning teen comedy-drama Skins (2007), and triple-BAFTA winner This is England ‘90 (2015). He has also featured in Doctor Who, Deep State and Blitz.

Samantha Morton

Greatorex

After recent turns in The Last Post, Safe and The Bay, Louis will reprise his breakthrough role as the perennially popular Last Tango In Halifax returns to our screens. Louis is also set to release comedy web series Shepherd’s Delight this year, alongside fellow Workshop alumni co-creators Harpal Hayer and Charles Evans.

Star of The Walking Dead, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) and Minority Report (2002). Samantha has starred alongside Tom Cruise and been directed by Woody Allen and Steven Spielberg. She made her own directorial debut in 2009 with The Unloved and won a BAFTA for Best Single Drama.

Marcus Rutherford

Currently filming major new fantasy series The Wheel Of Time, Marcus caps off a highly successful couple of years, receiving great praise and a British Independent Film Award nomination for his role in feature film Obey

Jack O’Connell

Lauren Carse

A breakthrough star in the new season of ITV’s Grantchester, where she plays Ellie Harding. Lauren has also landed TV roles in The Mallorca Files (2019), Vera (2018), People Just Do Nothing (2017), Electric Dreams (2017) and Humans (2016). She’s definitely one to look out for over the next year or two.

Jack debuted as Pukey in This is England (2006) and further made a name for himself for his role as Cook in Skins. He has since found great success in TV and Film, including leading roles in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken (2014) and Jodie Foster’s Money Monster (2016). Jack won a series of accolades for this performance including the BAFTA for Best Rising Star. He’s also starred in Godless (2017), ‘71 (2014) and 300: Rise of an Empire (2014).

Anjli Mohindra

Summaya Mughal

Summaya won the BBC Radio Nottingham open auditions in 2018 and presented their evening show, before taking over BBC Leicester’s breakfast show. In 2020 she won BBC’s Newcomer of the Year and made her Radio One debut. She’s now presenting documentaries for BBC One as well as her regular radio work.

Anjli is best known for her portrayals of Queen Skithra in Doctor Who and as Nadia in the hit television series Bodyguard. She was also a regular in Dark Heart, the British television crime drama series. She first gained attention after her role as Rani, a regular character in The Sarah Jane Adventures, which aired on on CBBC over a five-year period.

Eve Austin

Making big waves across the industry, Eve is racking up a CV including Our Ladies, Print, The Athena and the ABC Murders. In 2019 she starred in the highly-acclaimed stage play LIT, written by Workshop alumni Sophie Ellerby, for which she earned a Broadway World award nomination for Best Actress.

Bella Ramsey

A star of Game Of Thrones (Lyanna Mormont) and The Worst Witch (Mildred Hubble). Bella also voiced the title character in the award-winning Netflix animation Hilda, and has starred alongside Samantha Morton (Two For Joy), Jesse Eisenberg (Resistance) and Will Ferrell (Holmes and Watson).

Shaneigha-Monik Greyson

Starring in a new comedy pilot Newark, from the producers of Skins. Travelled to the Toronto Film Festival and the London BFI Festival with the feature film Rocks in which she stars, which will be released in UK cinemas in April.

Ciaran Stow

Currently filming a key guest role in BBC’s Doctors for 9 episodes, to be broadcast later in the year.

Lydia Page

Filling the enormous shoes of Bella Ramsey by taking on the title role in the continuing Worst Witch series, screening now. Will also appear in Casualty later in the year.

Shea-Michael Shaw

Seen last year playing Stephen Graham’s son in Shane Meadows’ latest critically-acclaimed series The Virtues on Channel 4.

Justine Moore

Justine has been nominated for two awards for her incredible performance in short film Bellmouth, available on Vimeo and also starring Workshopper Lance O’Reilly. Justine also appeared in BBC Arts short Birdcage.

Mica Ricketts

Last year Mica had roles in Vera and Noel Clarke’s Bulletproof. She is currently filming the lead role in a top secret local feature film alongside a host of Workshop talent. Watch this space.

Joelle Bromidge

Currently available on Netflix in a collaboration with CBBC, new TV series Get Even stars Joelle Bromidge and alumni Jake Dunn.

Oliver Huntingdon

A supporting role in the second series of The End Of The F***ing World is quickly followed by a much bigger gig, starring in Sky Atlantic’s major new Roman Empire series Domia, due for release next year.

Katy Byrne

A new face at Workshop making her TV debut later in the year, playing Katherine Ryan’s daughter in new Netflix comedy Duchess.

Roots

Radio 4 commissioned a pilot episode of this comedy drama, devised by a large cast of Workshop talent past an present. The show was broadcast in January and featured Vicky McClure alongside current talent Ella O’Brien and Spike Fearn, and alumni including Jorden Myrie, Narisha Lawson, Harpal Hayer, Rochelle Simpson and Ben Welch.
