Dear Friend, As you may be aware, Ken Gill, former General Secretary of TASS and TUC President, is well known not only for his work on behalf of working people, but also for his incisive and witty caricatures, drawn over a lifetime of working for the trade union movement.
“We all knew Ken was good at drawing and there were certain trade union leaders who would have loved to see Ken drawn too, but only after he’d been hung and quartered!” Rodney Bickerstaffe
A group of his friends intend publishing a small volume of his best caricatures of trade union leaders, politicians and personalities, completed over a lifetime. It would provide a historical overview of trade unionism from a different perspective to that of mainstream journalism or academic historiography. Under the auspices of Artery Publications we will be publishing this book of his caricatures, including appropriate anecdotes about the figures portrayed. However, to do this we need to raise a small amount of cash to cover publication and are appealing to you and the wider trade union movement for support. We are requesting that people pre-purchase a copy of the book, for the nominal price of £12, and, if they wish, make a donation towards costs. It is not a profit-making venture, but any income generated will go to the Morning Star, our only socialist daily paper; we hope it will be a fitting commemoration of Ken’s work as a trade unionist and caricaturist, as well as a unique historical record. We urge you to support this project. We would be grateful if you could also pass this information on to anyone else who may be interested. 12 February 2009
