Savor the Day

Hi! I’m Shashu ] [Shay shoe

I

’m the Owner and Creative Director of Legacy Planners—the stationery design studio for purpose-led businesses that desire to impact their tribes’ daily lives. I obtained my Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Psychology from HBCU -Fayetteville State University. Psychology studies our mental processes—why we do what we do. I believe functional design coupled with soul, aesthetics, and psychology will help you create a deeper connection with your audience resulting in daily influence and a solid trustworthy community.

C

reating custom stationery and graphics is a work of art. My mother is an artist—she taught me vanishing point at the age of four. Art, writing, and creativity have been essential pieces of my life since childhood. In 2013, I explored a new medium and taught myself graphic design. Combining my love of art, psychology, and planning brought on the idea of Legacy Planners. In 2020, I experienced firsthand what chronic stress and to-do list burnout can do to your body. Legacy Planners went from an idea to a purpose. And that purpose is to eliminate to-do list burnout and reimagine what planners and to-do lists look like—especially for Black Women.

M

y mission is to provide the tools that bring daily fulfillment that liberates you & generations to come. I intend to change how we view planners and stationery— they’re a tool to bring flow and daily fulfillment into our lives—not anxiety.

I I

t’s important for my clients, tribe, and partnerships to know that I value wellness and integrity and am Spirit/purpose-lead. Details and intention are essential to my creative process. n a social media-driven society, where 15-second stories, 8-second clips, and 2-second website scans dominate, I created this lookbook/ guide for your review, to get to know me, Legacy Planner’s values, and processes. I intentionally designed each page and layout to look different yet flow in a manner that showcases Legacy Planners capabilities from design, strutcure, to impact. You will also find a section within the lookbook that delves into psychology, facts that support the importance of the work that I do. This information is meant to be utilized for the benefit of your company and your consumer. I don’t believe in conincidences, so if you’ve found yourself reading this, there’s something in here for you! I hope that you enjoy reading more about Legacy Planners, our processes, mission, values, and more along the way. If we are fortunate enough to work together, please know that you will help me to fulfill my mission and I’m grateful.

EXPERIENCE Before starting Legacy Planners, I was Director of Communications for a North Carolina education association—overseeing the concept, design, and print production of promotional and marketing materials, and stationery (rack cards, brochures, workbooks, etc.) on a mass scale. Legacy Planners’ primary focus is stationery. In addition to my work experience, I have been immersed in the planning community since I was a kid—I kept a diary in rotation and Lisa Frink was a hit for my generation! I use stationery daily and have a specific understanding of the stationery community and passion that shows in my work. Yes, those are all my planners pictured!

ESSENCE I am a firm believer that at the core of every business is the essence of its creator. From Facebook to the mom & pop bakery on the corner. My mission, values, and vision are woven into my process, style, and systems at Legacy Planners. Creating a beautiful symphony of art for you to build your tribe and uplift your community. Everything is energy. Quality, integrity, and creativity will be delivered in this specific way. I bring me. My methodology ensures a seemless magical flow from inception to completion.

P S YC H O LO G Y I have a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Psychology. Cognitive and consumer psychology are key factors in my design style. I go deep into color theory, motivation, functionality, and more. The effectiveness of your product goes beyond a trendy mood board and beautifully designed Pinterest board. With me, aesthetics meets functionality, soul, and psychology. Resulting in relatability with the consumer and building a strong, reliable community. The details matter at Legacy Planners. 16

P sychology of Writing Do you experience the euphoria of writing with a new pen, smoothly gliding across beautifully styled stationery? I know I do! I have used planners, stickers, and fancy writing pens since I was a young girl—I grew up in the Lisa Frank era, do you blame me! Stationery—pens, pencials, markets, stickers, notebooks, planners, scratchpads, journals, workbooks, and lists help bring structure and creative fun to the chaos of everyday life. These tools also have psychological benefits.

benefits

Using physical stationery to write on and with are helpful in memory retention, learning, and provide an unmatched sensory experience. It’s been said that opening and smelling a new book gives a euphoric feeling. A similar sensory response can found when seeing and using well-styled or fresh stationery pages. “The blank page effect” can give users a spark of inspiration. Stationery users are lifelong customers. Providing them with a system that works will keep them coming back again and again. An intentionally well-designed planner can increase productivity, memory, supports learning, inspires users to get organized, and be intentional. What are the correlation between physical stationery and writing; what are the benefits of writing on paper? Lets go deeper into the pyschology of writing.

When I was in college obtaining my Bachelor of Applied Science Psychology degree, my peers and I all were encouraged to have a notebook and writing materials to take notes during lectures. When I was in the boardroom as Director of Communications, executive portfolios, and pens were always provided to the board and c-suite. The psychology of writing is important to understand why stationery is such an important factor in everyday life. The psychology of writing tells us why we can’t stop buying and won’t stop buying and using stationery. Computers and social media use is at an all-time high— everyone has a phone glued to their hand. Yet stationery (writing materials and paper products) is still widely used and the trend continues to rise. Stationery is used by the mother making her grocery list, the CEO in the boardroom, the student in school, the business owner planning social content, and her cohorts sitting in her Zoom session. Why is this? It is my belief and understanding that psychologically speaking, writing is the physical application of the brain's active processing of information and ideas. Oxford Languages defines writing as the activity or skill of marking coherent words on paper and composing text. Writing benefits us socially, in the boardroom, classroom, home, and even in online e-courses. Writing via pen/pencil and paper garnishes beautiful benefits for the brain and nervous system. Let's go deeper. Why do we still use stationery at such a high rate? Why do people buy more and more paper products and writing utensils? Neurotransmitters enter the chat! Neurotransmitters are chemical responses that deliver messages within the body—how our body communi20

cates with itself! Yes, you talk to yourself every minute of the day! In the field of psychology, we know that in the first five years of a child’s life, they develop core thoughts, ideals, responses, traits, etc. Take this scenario for example, ‘Mom sits down with her son and begins teaching him how to write his letters around four years old. He follows her directions, and he sees the smile on her face when he writes the cutest backward S. He keeps going, his brain is processing not only what he’s learning, but that this activity is favorable to his mother (the person who takes care of him, loves him, time spent, etc.) His brain is now wiring itself to enjoy writing. He may even go on to write his own novel at 32 because he grew to love the act of writing so much. What psychological processes happened in this scenario? The release of serotonin—the happiness chemical response—he’s happy to spend time with his mother, he likes to see her happy. The physical application of writing signals that writing feels good to the body. Acetylcholine—the learning hormone—he’s actively learning, and these neurotransmitters are firing off as he writes and learns. Glutamate—the memory hormone—creates this memory in his brain, writing helps him remember what he’s learning. Additionally, writing develops fine and gross motor skills that directly correlate with the brain, spine, and entire body. The beautiful part about this effect in writing is that it doesn’t take childhood to produce these neurotransmitters with the same outcome. A therapist could suggest writing as a coping mechanism at 47 years old, and our neurotransmitters will still produce these messages within the body.

Writing is calming, it feels good to get these thoughts out of my mind and onto paper”, a sense of peace—GABA hormone. If you find writing pleasurable, Dopamine—the feel-good hormone is another neurotransmitter that is produced when we see stationery, buy it and use it. I cannot tell you how many people get very excited when they see new planners, buy new planners, and use the pens, markers, stickers, and other accessories that make the art of planning pleasurable. Holistically speaking, when we write, we make the invisible (thoughts), visible. Writing on paper is as trees dancing and swaying in the wind. You can’t see the air, yet it’s there. Writing is powerful as it makes the invisible visible and understandable to other—a form of communication. To move your will, thoughts, ideas, and goals, across a sheet of paper. The next time you have a blank piece of paper, check in with yourself and see what comes up; how do you feel about the clean sheet in front of you? This will tell you psychologically what you feel about writing and how you can improve your relationship with writing. The psychology of writing helps us to understand, learn, communicate processes, perceeptions, and imaginations of the brain. Writing produces results in our daily lives like optimum mental wellness, strong fine motor skills, daily fulfillment, memory retention, learning, stronger curiosity, calming effects in the body, and even pleasure to the mind and body.

Writing is a formalized form of thinking –Dr. Jordan Peterson

Now that we have a better understanding of the psychology of writing, how it benefits us a people, let’s jump into the benefits of using stationery—planners, scratchpads, journals, calendars, workbooks, and more! LOOKBOOK

PLANNER P SYCH O L O GY WHY PEOPLE USE & BUY PLANNERS Psychology studies mental processes and why people do what they do. Neurotransmitters released in the body create a chemical response with positive hormonal reactions in the body in the form of dopamine (pleasure), GABA (calming), Glutamate (memory), and Serotonin (mood-enhancing). These hormones can decrease the release and delay the release of Epinephrine (stress response hormone; flight or fight) and Cortisol (stress hormone) in the body because keeping a journal is a healthy coping mechanism to acknowledge feelings, examine them, and release them from the body. When a consumer utilizes their planner, they have a sense of calm (GABA) in their daily lives because they’re organized, prepared, and don’t have to worry. I’m sure we’ve all heard, “If I don’t write it down, I don’t remember it” or “It has to go in my planner or it doesn’t happen.” Some people see the latter about their processes of daily life, “My brain doesn’t work like it used to, old age, mom brain, etc.” So, people are trying to offset what they perceive about how their brain works. Utilizing pen and paper isn’t a sign of forgetfulness, it can be looked at as preventative medicine. Pen and paper are like a treadmill for the brain—it’s a helpful exercise to keep the brain active. The planner and diary industry CAGR of 4.1% post-pandemic and anticipated continuous CAGR rise to 19% by 2031—the planner and diary/journal industry is not slowing down. The reason this happens is that planners, diaries/journals are a part of consumers’ everyday lives. Planning is a lifestyle. Planner communities are strongly influenced by expression, creativity, and joy. Planners help users to design their days how they see fit and it’s an added cherry on top to use stickers, washi tape, markers, and fine liner pens—adding to the creativity in the sta-

tionery community. Users personalize their planners, they carry them with them everywhere with them. The demographics of planner users span many age groups, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. The senior citizen writing down their grandkid’s birthday to the middle school girl drawing balloons on top of her best friend’s birthday. The CEO in the boardroom and the mother making her grocery list and to-do list for the week ahead. Diaries/Journals are looked at as the most sacred place to share your innermost thoughts and feelings. A safe place to detail your day without judgment. No waiting for an appointment with your therapist, no looks of judgment—just you and that’s very comforting to many people. Daily impact that benefits the user. Planners are initially seen as a tool to help consumers get organized. Users look and write in their planners every day. They’re like the physical representation of “the cloud” if you’ll have it. You know how happy, relieved, and safe people feel when they know their photos are backed up in the cloud and they want more and more cloud space. Planners can be seen as a second brain, a place to get organized, explore our days, problem solve, and plan our days out in a physical way. In conclusion, people buy stationery, planners, and diaries because of the immediate benefits they provide. Instant gratification in mind, in thought, in goal setting, planning, and expressing themselves. People aimlessly scroll on social media, but they do not aimlessly write in their diaries and planners. If you’re looking to have daily influence and create daily impact—create a planner or diary/journal intentionally designed for your tribe—I can help!
