ALFALFA PLANTING TIPS Seeding Rates: 12-20 lbs/acre • Seeding Depth: Heavy Soils- ¼-½”/ Sandy Soils-½-¾”
Fertility: • Phosphorus: 12#/P2O5 per ton crop removal. • Recommend applying 50-100#/P2O5/acre depending on production history and soil test levels.
• Boron: If soil test levels are below 1 ppm or soil texture is fairly course (sandy), highly recommend a boron fertilizer application. • Typically apply 1-2#/actual boron to the acre for alfalfa production.
• Potassium: 58#/K20 per ton crop removal. • Typically if soil test levels are below 200 ppm, recommend applying a potassium fertilizer source at 40-120#/acre of actual K2O.
• Calcium: 30#/actual calcium removed per ton. If soil test levels for calcium are deficient, a calcium fertilizer source is highly recommended. • Gypsum (CaSO) or Lime (CaCO) are wonderful calcium sources.
• Sulfur: If organic matter levels are below 2.5% or the soil texture is fairly light, a sulfur application is highly recommended. • Recommend applying 10-20#/acre of actual sulfur.

SILAGE CORN
LEGEND NEXT GENERATION CORN LNG hybrids are built to increase milk production through quality feed value and increased tons per acre. LNG hybrids are the newest silage specific hybrids to hit the market since the introduction of BMR genetics in 1994 and are exclusive to Legend Seeds. Starch supplied from corn silage is an important source of dietary energy for lactating dairy cows. Leafy hybrids have always been selected specifically for softer kernel types and slower drying rates. Leafy floury hybrids feature the same leafy silage characteristics with even more available starch.

SILAGE CORN
LEAFY SILAGE CORN Legend has responded to the requests of our customers and we are now offering highly digestible silage specific products that are fully traited for the growers that need silage specific products for fields that are continuous corn. These products have excelled in Legend Seeds silage testing and are a significant step up in yield and quality over dual purpose hybrids and are well adapted to the yield environments in the Legend Seeds marketing area. The most important management tip to follow is not to over plant leafy products, these products need the interplant space to maximize yield and quality which is why we recommend planting populations up to 30,000 plants per acre.

WHEAT PLANTING TIPS SEEDING • Plant Population: Must have a drop of 1,800,000 dropped seeds per acre… NO LESS! • Seed Treatments: • A seed applied fungicide for the many soil born fungal diseases absolutely is a MUST!!! Do not “skip” this process!!! • Recommend the application of Quickroots™ to the seed for larger root mass and enhanced nutrient uptake • Planting Depth: • Spring wheat planting depth: 1 ¼-1 ½” • Winter Wheat: 1 ½-1 ¾” • Row width: 7 ½” or less FERTILITY • Applied through air seeder with wheat seed: • 75#/11-52-0 (Map) per acre…Do not use DAP! • 25#/0-0-60 (Potash) • Broadcast: (Dry) • Nitrogen • Low productive soils: 90-100# actual nitrogen applied • High productive soils: 110-120# actual nitrogen applied •Sulfur • Need 50# acre 21-0-0-24S (Ammonium Sulfate) • Copper • Less than 1 ppm soil test levels of copper will require 2# per acre 23% Copper Sulfate (Dry product), broadcasted.
8 | 2017 Specialty Product Guide
HERBICIDE, EARLY FUNGICIDE & INSECTICIDE • Herbicide options: • Many options are available based on weed species and rotational restrictions so read and follow label directions. • Fungicide: • Consider one in the early vegetative stage read and follow the label directions • Insecticide • Many options are available depending on species and timing. Read and follow label directions *Make sure that you apply herbicide, early fungicide and insecticide before first visible joint (feeks 6 wheat). Step 4: (Head-set application of fungicide and insecticide) • Once you’ve reached 95% or greater head emergence: • Fungicide + Insecticide: Read and follow label directions *Must have full head emergence before applying, but don’t wait too long!!!
SPECIALTY FORAGES
Annual specialty forage crops often times are thought of as a great supplemental crop or emergency crop for many livestock producers. Annual forages play an important role by providing high quality hay, silage and even grazing capabilities. They should be considered when growers need or want supplemental forage, to make up for winter kill on perennial crops, or if producers are looking to extend the growing/grazing season after small grain harvest or early season corn silage.
TRIPPER MAXX
SPRINT MAXX
Tripper Maxx is a high value pea/triticale mixture consisting of 50% LC6040 Peas and 50% Elevator Triticale. Tripper Maxx produces high quality forages for dairy and beef herds throughout northern US and Eastern Canada and is commonly used to establish other forages such as alfalfa.
Sprint Maxx is a high value pea/oat mixture consisting of 50% LC6040 Peas and 50% Purebred Oats. Sprint Maxx is an ideal forage to seed after Winter Wheat or Sweet Corn in the first two weeks of August. Sprint Maxx is known to produce excellent volumes of good quality forage in approximately 60 days making it ideal for quick forage production in the northern US and Eastern Canada.
SILOBUSTER Pea Mixes
Red Carpet® XL 3-YR Red Clover
Silobuster Mixtures offer an elite combination of quality forage peas and forage oats/barley/triticale. These proprietary mixtures are ideal as nurse crops or for straight forage. Silobuster mixtures can be planted in early spring to serve as a nurse crop or early fall to fulfill forage needs.
Red Carpet® Brand Red Clover is a dual purpose blend of improved red clover varieties fit for both haying and grazing. It has demonstrated increased yields over Arlington, Marathon and Kenland red clovers.
Silobuster (Pea/Oat) 60% LC6040 Forage Peas & 40% Calibre Forage Oats Silobuster (Pea/Triticale) 60% LC6040 Forage Peas & 40% Galaxy Triticale
• Rapid spring growth
• May produce three cuttings on second-year stands
• Works well in rotational grazing programs
• Increased disease resistance
Silobuster (Pea/Barley) 60% LC6040 Forage Peas & 40% Trident Barley
FEED VALUES Many producers plant forage peas with small grains as a great annual forage. The forage that is harvested is often times higher in quality and more palatable to animals than small grains planted alone. A great deal of research has been done showing small grains planted with forage peas can provide excellent tonnage and high quality feed. The peas in the mixture generally increased crude protein up to 3-4 percentage points just planted alone. As with any annual or perennial forage, there is a tradeoff between yield and quality. To have high quality forage available from annual forages, small grains/peas should be
harvested when the small grain is at the late boot to early heading stage of maturity, and the peas are beginning to blossom. Harvesting at this time is ideal for the producer that is looking for dairy quality hay or silage. Dry matter yields will generally range from 2-4 tons / acre and the crude protein levels will generally be at its highest points with 15-20% crude protein possible. Delaying harvest of specialty forages until the small grain is at or beyond the soft dough stage and the peas are at pod development will increase the dry matter tons per acre but also decrease forage values and protein levels. At this stage of development, yields can generally range from 3-5 tons per acre and protein levels from 10-15%.

SORGHUM
SORGHUM SUDANGRASS LSS 410
LSS 430 BMR
LSS 410 has an outstanding forage production feature, and is sweet and palatable. It has finer stalks, fast emergence, good early vigor and quick re-growth. For maximum tonnage and palatability cut in the pre boot stage. Cut approximately six inches from the ground for quick re-growth. It is disease resistant to Downy Mildew and other foliar diseases.
LSS 430 BMR sorghum sudangrass can be used for direct grazing, haying and haylage. It is a premium hybrid that has the BMR characteristics which significantly increases digestibility and palatability. The stems feel and look softer and will appear more limber with distinct brownish color. Increased gains can be expected when animals are fed equal quantities compared to other forages. This hybrid has long narrow leaves, excellent standability and re-growth capabilities. Disease and drought performance are very good and green leaf retention at harvest is excellent.
Plant Height Usage
6-8 Feet Grazing & Haying
Plant Height Usage
6-8 Feet Grazing & Haying
GRAIN SORGHUM PLANTING TIPS Grain Sorghum (Milo) • 70-90,000 dropped plants per acre • Approximately 5-6.4# per acre (figuring an average of 14,000 seeds per pound)
FORAGE SORGHUM PLANTING TIPS Silage or Green Chop : 10-12 # per acre planted in 20-30” rows. Recommend forage sorghum be used for silage or greenchop purposes
Haying: 12-15# per acre planted with a drill Seeding Depth and Soil Temperature • Planting depth: 1-2” planting depth. • Soil Temperature at planting: 60-65 degrees at planting. Harvesting: Silage: Chop when moisture content is 60-72% moisture, which is typically in the medium dough-hard dough stage. Greenchop: Harvest at 3 ft. to early boot. Greenchop only what you can feed in one day.
Hay - Put up for hay from 36” or taller in plant height.
SORGHUM SUDAN PLANTING TIPS Grazing: 15-18# / acre planted in 20-30” rows (rows decrease livestock trampling) Haylage or Green Chop : 15-18 # / acre planted in 20-30” rows Haying: 20 - 25” / acre seeded with a drill. Planting Depth & Soil Temperature • Planting Depth: 1-1.5” planting depth. • Soil Temperatures during seeding: Soil Temperatures should reach 60-65 degrees before planting. Harvesting: Grazing: Have livestock “filled up” before turning cattle into and make sure sorghum sudangrass is 24” in height. If sorghum sudangrass gets ahead of livestock and heads out. Remove livestock immediately and mow back to 8-10” and allow to grow back to 24” before returning livestock. Hay: Bale when sorghum sudangrass is 36-48” in height. Greenchop or Haylage: Harvest at 3 feet to early boot. Only greenchop what you can feed in one day.

SORGHUM
FORAGE SORGHUM LFS 501
LFS 701 BMR
LFS 501 offers farmers and stockmen many options. It can be used for summer grazing or haying or it can be left for winter grazing. LFS 501 produces very sweet forage when left to maturity. Emergence is good in cool soils and is predominately sterile if not pollinated from an outside source. LFS 501 is much sweeter and softer stalked than sudangrass hybrids.
LFS 701 BMR is a full season brown midrib forage sorghum for direct pasture, silage or hay usage. It has good re-growth after pasturing. This is a cattleman’s premier sorghum hybrid. IT has exceptional sweetness plus it has a brown midrib. LFS 701 BMR has larger stems than sorghum sudangrass hybrids, resulting in excellent resistance to lodging. It also retains its large dark green leaves throughout the growing season. It is partially sterile, thus not producing significant amounts of grain. This causes a substantial build-up of non-structural carbohydrates (sugars) in the stem and leaves. The entire plant is more palatable to cattle than many other conventional hybrids. Significant animal gain should be seen over conventional sorghum.
Haying practices: Sugar content reaches its peak at boot stage to heading. Swathing at this point achieves high tonnage of leafy forage with extremely sweet and soft stalks.
LFS 901 BMR
All forage and grain sorghums are treated with
LFS 901 BMR is a dual purpose forage used for silage, grazing or green chopping. LFS 901 BMR is a brown midrib that has a very sweet stem with excellent green leaf retention. The brown midrib characteristic increases digestibility. It has excellent foliar disease resistance and maintains a healthy canopy until harvest. This hybrid has an exceptional level of sugars in the stem thus making palatability very high. These sugars also provide additional energy and nutrition. Large heads of tannin-free grain add to the nutrition level of silage produced. It is approximately 85 days to bloom. This hybrid is designed to be a one-time harvest hybrid; however it does have good re-growth capabilities which can be utilized for fall grazing after it has been cut for silage. Yield is good.

COVER CROPS
Planning for Success - Procure Seed With cover crops and most other small seeded crops, seed production usually doesn’t match up with the same as traditional cash crops. That means supplies are not guaranteed and inventories can be hard to forecast. It is imperative to plan early, contacting a reputable seed dealer to ensure that a good inventory of quality, clean seed supply is available.

Vivant Hybrid Brassica
Fria Annual Ryegrass
Vivant Hybrid Brassica is a quick-growing brassica (upright and spreading cool-season annual) with very little bulb development. Vivant is best suited for multiple grazing cycle situations because of its excellent regrowth. It can be used to extend the grazing season in the fall or planted alongside warm season annuals for multiple grazings in the summer. With proper management (first grazing in 40-45 days AND subsequent grazing cycles every 25 - 30 days when grazed no less than 4”), it has the potential to yield over 5 tons of dry matter an acre
Fria Annual Ryegrass has long been offered by La Crosse Seed as a formidable ryegrass option for the Midwest, both for cover cropping and late season forage. Fria was developed at the University of Florida for cold tolerance, improved crown rust resistance and resistance to gray leaf spot. Fria is a late maturing diploid variety. Research from 2013 at Ohio State University showed Fria #1 in combination of winter-tolerance and fall biomass production
• Known for its quick regrowth, even under close grazing • Different than turnips, all the energy of the plant is contained in the leaves • Highly digestibility - suitable for dairy, beef and sheep • When fed, brassicas need to be combined with other forages (no more than 1/3 of the total animal diet) to prevent potential livestock disorders)
• Fria is a “diploid” annual ryegrass - meaning greater tolerance to grazing and typically greater carbohydrate storage for improved cold tolerance • Quick producer of high levels of biomass • Later maturity - more flexibility in spring for mangement and termination
