THE SWAKOPMUND NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH IS A GROUP OF DEDICATED MEN AND WOMEN OF SWAKOPMUND WHO ARE ON STANDBY DAY AND NIGHT TO KEEP SWAKOPMUND CRIME FREE. The organisation was established in June 2012 with approximately ten members. People who saw the importance of such an operation volunteered to join. Within 2 months there were ÄM[` TLTILYZ HUK I` +LJLTILY [OL` had over three hundred active patrollers.

LOCATION Swakopmund lies at the coast of north-western Namibia, 360 km (175 miles) west of Windhoek, Namibia’s capital. It is the capital of the Erongo administrative district. Swakopmund is a beach resort and an example of German colonial architecture. It was founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South-West Africa. The town lies on the B2 road and the Trans-Namib Railway line from Windhoek to Walvis Bay. It is also home to the Swakopmund Airport.

CLIMATE Surrounded by the Namib Desert on three sides and the cold Atlantic waters to the west, Swakopmund enjoys a temperate climate. The average temperature ranges between 15°C (59°F) to 25°C (77°F). Rainfall is less than 15 mm per year, making gutters and drainpipes on buildings a rarity. The cold Benguela current supplies moisture for the area in the form of fog that can reach as deep

HISTORY Swakopmund was founded in 1892, two years later than Windhoek, by Captain Curt von François. It was intended to be the main harbour of GerTHU :V\[O >LZ[ (MYPJH 0UJYLHZLK [YHMÄJ IL[^LLU Germany and its colony necessitated establishing a port of its own, as Walvis Bay, located 33 kilometres south, was in British possession. The choice was made to use a site north of the Swakop River, because water was readily available, and because other sites were unsuitable. The site did not offer any natural protection to ships lying off the coast, such places being very rare on Namibia’s coast.

On 4 August 1892 the crew of a gunboat named Hyäne (German for Hyena) erected two beacons on a large dune, probably in the vicinity of the present lighthouse. This is regarded as the founKPUN KH[L VM :^HRVWT\UK ;OL ÄYZ[ ZL[[SLYZ ^LYL 120 Schutztruppen with equipment and 40 settlers ^OV VMÅVHKLK MYVT [OL 4HYPL >VLYTHUU ]LZZLS using four landing boats. The settlers had to build caves on the beach to protect themselves against hostile weather. Before a breakwater was built in 1898, which later became known as the Mole, all VMÅVHKPUN ^HZ KVUL ^P[O ZWLJPHS IVH[Z [OH[ JV\SK only be handled by crewmen from Liberia.

THE FIRST JETTY WAS OPENED IN 1905.

At that time, up to 600 crew tribesmen were employed by the Woermann Line. The number VM ]LZZLSZ VMÅVHKPUN PU :^HRVWT\UK ^HZ PUJYLHZing rapidly. In 1896 the Woermann Line introduced a bi-monthly service, and in 1899, a monthly service to Swakopmund. Due to a lack of building TH[LYPHSZ TVZ[ VM [OL ÄYZ[ ZL[[SLYZ» OV\ZLZ ^LYL constructed out of prefabricated wood. Swakopmund quickly became the main port for imports and exports for the whole territory, and was one of six towns which received municipal status in 1909. Many government of-

ÄJLZ MVY .LYTHU :V\[O >LZ[ (MYPJH OHK VMÄJLZ PU Swakopmund. Soon, the harbour created by the Mole silted up, and in 1905 work was started on a wooden jetty, but in the long run this was inadequate. In 1914 construction of an iron jetty was therefore commenced, the remains of which can still be seen today. After World War I it became a pedestrian walkway. It was declared structurally unsound and was closed to the public for seven years and in 2006 renovations to the portion supported by concrete pillars were completed with the PROFILE OF SWAKOPMUND

remaining portion being alienated. It was reopened to the public in the late 2006 and has subsequently been upgraded even further with lighting and secure wooden walkways leading to a restaurant at the end of the jetty. Trading and shipping companies founded branches in Swakopmund. A number of these buildings still exist today. After German South-West Africa was taken over by the Union of South Africa in 1915, all harbour activities were transferred from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay. Many of the Central Government services ceased. Businesses closed down, the number of inhabitants diminished, and the town became less prosperous. However, the natural potential of Swakopmund as a holiday resort was recognised, and this potential has subsequently been developed. Today tourismrelated services form an important part of the town’s economy. The discovery of uranium at Rössing in 1928, 70 km (43 mi) outside the town, led to the development of the world’s largest opencast uranium mine. This had an enormous impact on all facets of life in Swakopmund which necessitated expansion of the infrastructure of the town to make it into one of the most modern in Namibia. The development of Arandis, which is recognized as a town of its own, owes its existence to the Rossing Mine and has undergone extensive development in the form of retail, housing and education. In October 2000 an agreement was signed between the Namibian and People’s Republic of China governments to build a satellite tracking station at Swakopmund. Construction was completed in July 2001 at a site north of Swakopmund to the east of the Henties Bay-Swakopmund road and opposite the Swakopmund Salt Works. The site was chosen as it was on the orbital track of a manned spacecraft during its re-entry phase. Costing N$12 million, the complex covers 150m x T 0[ PZ LX\PWWLK ^P[O Ä]L TL[LY HUK UPUL TL[LY satellite dishes.

In and around this desert town, development is booming. A new beach front 4 star hotel with conference facilities has been completed, while another hotel is due to open at the main beach in December 2015. In close proximity, at the main ILHJO H THQVY YL[HPS VMÄJL HUK HJJVTTVKH[PVU complex is due to start construction as soon as the old beachfront swimming pool complex is deTVSPZOLK ;OL PUKVVY ZWVY[Z JLU[YL PZ PU P[Z ÄUHS stages of completion, sporting the largest indoor sporting facility on the Southern African continent.

The Waterfront Breakwater Shopping and Hotel complex is due to be completed in 2016 and many more private ventures are being developed in town and along the river edge. Just outside Swakopmund, as one enters the desert town from the B1, an Arts and Crafts Centre has been developed, featuring many small and medium enterprise businesses, as well as VMMLYPUN ZRPSSZ [YHPUPUN PU [OL ÄLSKZ VM OVZWP[HSP[` welding and craft making.

SWAKOPMUND MASS HOUSING PROJECT IS UNDERWAY.

A new CBD Area in North Mondesa is being planned while in excess of 3000 new houses will have been built by December 2016 as part of a mass Housing Project. A new airport contingency and management plan is in place and Road Safety Awareness education programmes are being designed. Town entrances are being improved and an Industrial Park for Small and Medium Enterprises is being developed.

TOURISM & SHOPPING Swakopmund has become the tourism and shopping mecca of Namibia, boasting an array of well stocked bookshops and boutiques where a good cup of coffee forms part of the package. You can spend a good morning shopping at leisure with many boutiques to browse through, offering the latest in hip labels as well as a wide variety of your typical African Safari fashions. Banks are well represented with all the facilities you require from auto tellers to foreign exchange. The beauty of beach angling in Namibia lies in fact that you can take your 4x4 straight to the beach and the whole family joins in and makes a day of P[ ;OL ILZ[ ÄZOPUN ZWV[Z HYL VU [OL YVHK [V >HS]PZ Bay, which lies ±35km south from Swakopmund and also en route to Henties Bay to the north.

Kids have ample fun meeting at the Mole to swim, I\` PJL JYLHT HUK NV IVK` Z\YÄUN ( SP[[SL M\Y[OLY on, surfers and kite-surfers brave the wind and the waves, even if it’s only to support the annual regatta from Walvis Bay to Swakopmund, watching the boats coming in with its colorful display of sails – in a nutshell, Swakopmund has it all! Many visitors return annually to enjoy the oldworld charm of Swakopmund, with its palm-lined promenade. An oasis neatly nestled between the wild Atlantic Ocean and the world’s most ancient sea of sand, the Namib Desert.

PLACES TO VISIT AQUARIUM On the beachfront is the National Marine Aquarium, a favorite amongst children with its transparent, oval-shaped tank and glass walk-through tunnel. The Walvis Bay wetland and lagoon is recognised as one of Africa’s most important wetlands for migrating birds, the area was proclaimed as a RAMSAR site in 1995. A RAMSAR site is recognised as a wetland of international importance. RAMSAR is not an acronym, but refers to Ramsar the city in which the convention was originally signed, Ramsar is in Iran and the JVU]LU[PVU ^HZ ÄYZ[ KYHM[LK PU ;OL >HS]PZ )H` ^L[SHUK PZ VUL VM Ä]L 9(4:(9 ZP[LZ ^P[OPU Namibia. The cold Benguela current coming off the Antarctic brings in cold water from the south and

moves northwards along the Namibian coastline. This cold current upwelling provides nutrient rich waters which in turn provide the sea with a high production of phytoplankton, this then in turn feeds or fuels the food chain with many marine organisms, especially zooplankton which includes saline tolerant green algae and brine shrimp. This provides food for many thousands of birds especially for the Greater and Lesser Flamingos as well as many other marine organisms. Visiting birders and tourists come from all over the world to enjoy the sight of thousands of ÅHTPUNVZ NH[OLYPUN VU [OL SHNVVU HZ ^LSS HZ many other species of birds which gather in the summer months. Although thousands of birds are seen from the regular tourist areas, there are large prohibited areas with many more birds.

Black-winged Stilts with smaller numbers of Little Stints, Grey Plovers, Eurasian Curlews, Whimbrel and various terns and gulls. In the summer months large numbers of Black-necked Grebes, Common, Sandwich, Swift and Black ;LYUZ TH` IL LUJV\U[LYLK ;OLZL NH[OLY [V ÄZO PU the lagoon, these as well as small numbers of the rare and diminutive near-endemic Damara Tern. The Damara Tern is an Intra-African migrant which returns from the bulge of Africa to breed along our coast line. We have the largest population of these birds which breed here but unfortunately due to off-road driving, motorbikes, quads and people running their dogs, as well as other man-made disturbances, much of the birds previous breeding areas are being affected or have been destroyed. This is sad as the total world population is extremely small (7000 individuals plus minus).

Resident species found here are the White-fronted and Chestnut-banded Plovers, Cape Teal, Caspian and Swift Terns, Cape, Bank, Crowned and Whitebreasted Cormorants as well as the Kelp and Hartlaub’s Gulls may be encountered throughout the year. At the Walvis Bay and Swakopmund sewerage system there are often interesting species such as Hottentot Teal, Cape Shoveler, Red-knobbed Coot, Little Grebe, and Common Moorhen. There are also sometimes very rare and exciting records such as the only American Black Skimmer ever recorded in Namibia and in fact the southern part of Africa! Because of these rarities and vagrants the wetland has become a destination to both local and PU[LYUH[PVUHS IPYKLYZ" THU` VM [OLZL IPYKLYZ ^PSS Å` in to visit the lagoon just to see one of these rare species!

9HYL =HNYHU[Z Z\JO HZ (TLYPJHU HUK 7HJPÄJ Golden Plovers, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Gullbilled Tern, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Blackheaded and Franklin’s Gull, Wilson’s and Grey Phalaropes and several others occasionally make their appearance along the coast and these, in turn, cause a lot of interest within the birding communities and many South Africans book ÅPNO[Z ZWLJPÄJHSS` [V JVTL HUK ZLL ZVTL VM [OLZL species. Scattered along the coast from The Cape Cross area to Walvis Bay there are several man-made guano platforms which attract thousands of Cape Cormorants and smaller numbers of Whitebreasted Cormorants, Great White Pelicans and Kelp Gulls which breed on these islands. Outside the breeding period, these islands are harvested from time to time for the guano which is used as fertilizer and for explosives.

Most of the huge numbers of waders found along the coast are Palearctic migrants and therefore will only be seen in our summer months when they leave their breeding grounds to feed along the Namibian coastline and wetlands. The resident species such as the White-fronted Sandplover are found all along our coastline where they breed often close to the shoreline and in densely utilised areas along the beach, it is amazing how they THUHNL [OPZ I\[ [OLPY ^LSS JHTV\ÅHNLK LNNZ HUK sly manner gets them through! Besides all the waders and sea birds there are also several other passerines found along the coastal areas these include the Tractrac Chat, Red-capped, Gray’s and Dune larks, Common Waxbills and in the Urban gardens of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund several others such as Dusky and Scarlet-chested Sunbirds, Orange River White-eye, Laughing doves ,White-backed

and Red-faced Mousebirds, Familiar Chats, and Bokmakierie, some raptors often seen are Rock Kestrel, Peregrine Falcon and occasionally the migrant Osprey and larger species such as Jackal Buzzard, Black-chested Snake Eagle, Martial Eagle and Booted Eagle. With good rainfall, which does not happen very often, the adjacent desert ‘blooms’, seed banks that have laid dormant for ages germinate on [OL KLZLY[ ÅVVY HUK NYH]LS WSHPUZ HUK [OPZ PU [\YU attracts several birds which would otherwise not occur here: some of these include Ludwig’s Bustard, Namaqua Sandgrouse, Burchell’s Courser, Stark’s , Grey-backed Sparrow larks, Greater Kestrels and Pale Chanting Goshawks. Remember, these will not normally be found here except the Goshawk which lives and breeds in the ephemeral riverbeds as such as the Ugab, Omaruru, Swakop and Kuiseb rivers.

The main court is an international-sized rink of 54 x 29m with a new stilmat sports court. It is surrounded with original hockey court dasher boards and plexi-glass. The rink was bought and shipped from the USA and installation was completed on the 1st March 2014. The second court is a 40 x 22m custom-made YPUR ^P[O WSH[L PJL ISPUR WSHZ[PJ ÅVVYPUN ZWVY[Z court. It was moved to the Swakopmund Indoor Sport Centre mid 2014, after a long duration at the SFC Sports Club from late 1995. ;OL ZWVY[ ^HZ ÄYZ[ PU[YVK\JLK [V :^HRVWmund in 1995 – however, this was more like street hockey on roller-blades, on a rough PU[LYSVJRZ Z\YMHJL ÄYZ[S` PU [OL YVHKZ V\[ZPKL enthusiasts’ residences and then moving to the parking lot at the Mole.

EVENTS

MEMBERS We have a total of 133 active members, 28 Learn to Skate members who come to practice most weeks, and various students who join practices/play during their holidays, so over 170 players who are associated with our club. The members compete and practice in the following divisions. In the national tournaments we have A and B teams competingin almost all the junior categories, with a proposal to include a C team in the 8&U category this year. We will be entering two 10&U A teams this year. Last year, the Coastal Pirates club had teams through to the NIIHA Championship in every division, and their A teams won the 8&U, 10&U, 12&U, 14&U and Open divisions. Except for one loss by the U14’s, these teams remained unbeaten in the national league all year, winning 84 matches!
