REVERED AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHER

PETER COULSON

CAPTURES A STORY, MOVEMENT OR AN EMOTION IN A SINGLE FRAME. 45

PHOTOGRAPHY

Peter Coulson, an award winning Australian fashion photographer, known as the modern age black-and-white master of photography, specialises in the genres of beauty, fashion and fetish. His work has been published as covers and editorials in magazines worldwide, as well as winning multiple prestigious awards. Coulson mixes a range of styles, fusing the fashion trends with his personal conceptual reflections. His images, strong, sensual, and mysteriously elegant always with a twist of his of his weird sense of humour, are recognised and well known. He uses a simple lighting to enhance the tonality

BORN TO BE AN ARTIST + There is a profound simplicity to Coulson’s images, but an even more profound depth that is clearly not created by simply great equipment. Like any of the greatest artists in history, Coulson crafts his images in such a way that it transcends any gear.

46

in the artwork. Peter says that he believes every good photographer should be using high end quality lights. The biggest benefit is the actually quality of the light, consistency of power, and ability to freeze action. Constantly searching for new models to portray, he looks for women with inner beauty as he believes it can be seen through the eye of the camera. When Peter Coulson takes a photo he looks for negative space, shadows, and the opportunity to tell a story within the one image. His work is often characterised by humour as well as a strong connection with the model.

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR STEVEN AN IMAGE SHOULD STAND ON ITS OWN. IT HAS TO BE A MOVIE FRAME. ‘’I WANT A PHOTO TO BE RIPPED OUT OF THE MAGAZINE AND PUT ON THE REFRIGERATOR’’.

Photographer Steven Lyon goes where the wild things are

All images © Steven Lyon

www.stevenlyon.com

Steven is respected and adored by all who know him because of his intense passion and zest for life, his curious nature, creativity, good looks, and sense of humor. He admits that in his job what he loves most are to travel, the whole set and production. We are agree, as Steven’s productions are more like a movie sets then a photo shoots. He’s passionate about photography, extreme sports, fast toys, and all things mechanical. “Faster, further, higher” is his motto, and it f its this man who lives his life on the edge. In his work he portrays a strong and conf ident not famose women. ‘’To much politics today with models and i want people to look at my images because of the image not because the girl on it is famous’’, Steven admits to Le Grand Mag.

PHOTOGRAPHER STEVEN LYON IS PROBABLY BEST KNOWN FOR HIS CINEMATIC, BLACKAND-WHITE PORTRAITS OF SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST EXQUISITE WOMEN Describing himself as an old school artist who loves the purity of creating a moment and i strive to capture just that, Steven Lyon is an enigma, hailing from Los Angeles, California. For over three decades, Steven has engineered a creative legacy both in front and behind the camera. As a lensman for top magazines and fashion campaigns, he’s seen enough exotic locations to f ill several lifetimes. He also happens to be ridiculously good-looking that makes it easier to swallow that he was also once a top male model. His career forged by Andy Warhol’s lens on Sunset Blvd in 1982 and he went on to become the face of Versace and Trussardi. Life was good. But it wasn’t until he picked up a camera that things got really interesting: Over the past 20 years, Lyons has traveled the world from his home base in Paris-with supermodel girlfriends like Lara Stone and Edita Vilkeviciute-adding adventurer, documentarian, and now activist to his résumé.

BEAUTY

Inspired by Moorish art, architecture and the splendor of their dynasties, Cindy Guillemant - the founder of the brand - created four different lines: the determinated and audacious Black, the ethereal and refined White, the creative and sophisticated Art and, launched in 2016, the Gold Collection, the epitome of style and aesthetics to wear on your skin, four olfactory jewels captured in bottles painted with pure gold. To preserve quality and authenticity, this niche perfume brand makes everything in Italy, from the scents - created by the nose Andrea Thero Casotti - to packaging with the help of expert craftsmen that they employ. It’s decisively a luxury fragrance of high standing and prestige.

PERFUME AS AN ART FORM www.moresqueparfum.com

Perfume has been cherished and seen as a luxury for centuries. Ancient Greeks, Persians and Egyptians were among the first to distill flowers, oils and plants to scent themselves and their surroundings. The fact that ancient civilizations kept records of how their perfumes were made suggests that subtle distinctions were made between different concoctions, and that some ingredients were prized more than others. Speaking about exclusive ingredients, we must mention Moresque Parfum, born from a marriage of Italian Style and Arabic Charm – a boutique artisanal brand with exclusive collections destined to people who choose to wear exclusive and original scents that are available in limited quantity. It is a relatively new Italian niche brand that was launched in 2015. The company is very strict in using higher concentrations of perfume extracts and more natural ingredients to create an awesome sensation and one of a kind experience each time the fragrance bottle is opened. Handcrafted from beautiful, complex scents that tantalise, entice, and intrigue your senses, it offers unique combinations of varying undertones and overtones to complement your personal preferences. A real treasure conceived around the concept of splendor which echoes an ideal: one’s accomplishment and breakthrough in life. Every collection is comprised in several fragrances, each in eau de parfum concentration. Three of them also come in matching attar (concentrated perfume oils) strength with Moresque label as “Esprit de Parfum”.

GRETEL ZANOTTI, ART AND FASHION WELL MIXED www.gretelz.com

Despite her young age, 22 years old Gretel Zanotti, has talent and creativity like no others. Having always been attracted by all artistic forms and representations, understood as an expression of one’s most intimate and hidden “Self ”, despite her young age Gretel Zanotti approaches the study of art history with a particular interest in the Renaissance. Creative and talented, thanks to her artistic training, she approached the fashion world early and at just 20 years of age decided to undertake a path aimed at the material representation of her vision of art through sophisticated creations and haute couture. Positive and determined but with a sensitive soul she decided to bare her soul, transferring her personality, simultaneously strong and fragile, to her creations, a mirror for her idea of femininity and sensuality which are far from being vulgar. Eclectic and a lover of what is objectively beautiful, she is always fascinated by the details of a painting, a photograph, a sculpture, an architectural work and turns them into sources of inspiration. Thus Gretel’s creative process originates in her interest in a specific artist/ designer or an art movement, the study and research of the dominant leitmotifs and the various forms of expression, which are then re-interpreted by her creativity and transferred, adding her personality and identity, to the women’s fashion world. The lines and cuts of her garments, produced entirely in Italy, are tailored with quality fabrics and materials and experiment with new artistic techniques. They are clean and free of excess, simple and minimal. This is how Gretel Zanotti’s Woman is created. A woman with personality, self-confident but also aware of her timidity and weaknesses, which she conquers with elegance and sensual determination. A classy woman who knows how to seduce without having to show too

much, genuine, practical, in continuous movement, and who pays careful attention to details. In the F/W 2017 collection, Gretel Zanotti explores the concept of the love of Aphrodite; an instinctive and purely erotic love, detached from any personal identification towards the subject of that love. Gretel is fascinated by this sense of pure love because it is unconditional and free, liberated from doubts and preconceptions, and abstract rather than personal. The purely sexual experience of loving and being loved. The Designer identifies this form of love in the pagan figure of the Nymph, whose body represents the essence of eroticism; the archetype of timeless beauty. Dazzled by the nymph like figures portrayed in William Bourgerau’s paintings, Gretel explores their refined sensuality and positivity; their way of loving, poised half way between good and evil, the sacred and the profane. Exploring this Universe, she adopts these concepts and shapes them into her creations. The colours and shapes are undeniably influenced by these nymphs; their Eden, and the natural elements of air, water and vegetation that surround them.Through the Designer’s technique of painting on fabric, she celebrates this unequivocal feeling of the moment of the embrace, taken from a work by the same artist, and understood by the Designer as the purest and most sincere manifestation of this love. Gretel Zanotti is already available in high level boutiques and through the e-commerce platform. The brand is about to open a boutique in via Bigli 24, just in the fashion district of Milan.

POSITIVE AND DETERMINED

BUT WITH A SENSITIVE SOUL GRETEL ZANOTTI DECIDES TO TRANSFER HER PERSONALITY, SIMULTANEOUSLY STRONG AND FRAGILE, TO HER CREATIONS, A MIRROR FOR HER IDEA OF FEMININITY AND SENSUALITY WHICH ARE FAR FROM BEING VULGAR. 63

Gieves supplied the uniform Lord Nelson died in. During the Crimean War it had a ship stationed in Crimean waters to outfit British naval officers on deck. Gieves’s eight-button naval double-breasted reefer jacket can be seen as the 19th-century precursor to the blazer. Hawkes made a lifesaving waistcoat in World War I and even spy suits made with buttons to hide microfilm.

It’s another big year of anniversaries in the luxury watch world. While Omega marks 60 years of the Speedmaster and Patek Philippe, 40 years of the Aquanaut, Rolex celebrated the half-century mark for its extreme divers’ watch, the Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller, by launching an all-new model, with a larger case and modern caliber, at Baselworld 2017. The new Rolex Sea-Dweller, a niche in the collection, has created some debates, raised some questions and shown a stronger evolution than what we’ve seen in the past. This watch, alongside the provocative Air-King or the much-hyped Daytona Steel / Ceramic, shows a new strategy – nothing brutal, still relying on the DNA of the brand, but more in line with the expectations of the market.

4. The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal over the dial is equipped, for the first time on this model, with a Cyclops lens over the date window at 3 o’clock.

WATCH JACOB & CO OPERA MUSICAL - THE MECHANICAL MUSICAL BOX AND THE HIGH-END WATCH MOVEMENT

World premiere combination of two traditional Swiss crafts is used in a timepiece: a mechanical music box basting 2 cylinders and combs and an exclusive Jacob & Co. JCFM02 manual-winding caliber. Jacob & Co. once again demonstrates its irrepressible ability to surprise as it launches the new Opera Musical Watch. Two cylinders and combs are mounted on the movement and rotate around the dial each time they play their melody, together with a triple-axis tourbillon and the subsidiary hour and minute dial. Using a one-piece sapphire crystal that encircles the whole timepiece, the entire workings of the Opera are put on display and it also allows the movement to deliver the purest sound.

THE OPPENHEIMER BLUE

A ‘LEGENDARY’ DIAMOND

The world’s most expensive diamond has set a new record after it was sold at auction - for more than £39 million. At 14.62 carats, the ‘Oppenheimer Blue’ was the largest Vivid Blue diamond ever to go under the hammer. The diamond got its name from the late Sir Philip Oppenheimer, who long oversaw De Beers mining and had given the stone to his wife. The exceptional diamond is classified as a Vivid Blue, emphasised by its classical emerald cut. ‘The Oppenheimer Blue can only be described as one of the rarest gems in the world,’ says François Curiel, Chairman of Christie’s Asia Pacific. 128

CAR

According to team principal Andreas Seidl, 60-70 percent of the car is newly developed. “The basic concept of the 919 Hybrid still offers scope to optimize the finer details and further boost efficiency,” Seidl said. “The monocoque is unchanged since 2016, but the optimisation potential of all other components was analyzed and, in most cases, adjustments made accordingly.”

UNVARIED DRIVE SYSTEM

THE 2017 VERSION

BUT MODIFIED DRIVETRAIN

MECHANICAL ENHANCEMENTS

The basic principle behind the drive system is unchanged, but Porsche engineers have boosted the performance of the drivetrain – the transmission on the front and rear axle, the combustion engine, the electric motor and the energy recovery systems have all been optimised.

Porsche says the 2017 version of the 919 Hybrid is different from its 2016 counterpart. The changes are in the area of aerodynamics. A new front end, rear air intakes, and other tweaks are compensate for 2017 rule changes that put more restrictions on aerodynamic aids for the top LMP1-class race cars.

The hybrid system put the 919 in the 8MJ sub class of the LMP1 category. This means that the car can use 8 megajoules of recovered energy over the 13.629-kilometre track in Le Mans, subject to the restriction that it may only consume a maximum of 4.31 litres of fuel to do so. It also has an impact on the fuel flow limit.

2017 drool-worthy version of Porsche 919 Hybrid

The 2017 model of the Porsche 919 Hybrid is a heavily upgraded version of the car, introduces a range of new innovations, that swept the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships last season.

134

Porsche officially showed off the spaceship of a race car, better known as the 919 Hybrid. Besides being a technical marvel, this car is quite the looker. The smaller brakes and compact engine have given Porsche the ability to sculpt the body for better airflow into and around the car.

T

he essence of the 919’s drivetrain remains the same, with a 2.0-litre turbocharged V4 supplying 368kW and an electric motor capable of bringing another 294kW to the party. The result is a healthy 662kW pulling along a lightweight chassis and a monocoque made of carbon fibre and honeycomb aluminium, totalling a dry weight of 875kg. “For the 2017 season, 60 to 70 percent of the vehicle is newly developed. The basic concept of the 919 Hybrid still offers scope to optimise the finer details and further boost efficiency. The monocoque has remained unchanged since 2016, but the optimisation potential of all other components was analysed and, in most cases, adjustments made accordingly.” Porsche LMP Team Principal Andreas Seidl claims. The 919 Hybrid is powered by both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. Porsche have made this year’s combustion engine extremely compact and lightweight. They say it’s the most fuel efficient engine they have ever produced. It uses a smaller turbo and more efficient direct injection to send just shy of 500hp to the rear wheels. The electric motor drives the front wheels and produces more than 400hp. Porsche use some engineering

magic with these engines and their energy recovery systems run so efficiently. Not only do they recover a huge amount of energy during braking, but they are now recovering energy during acceleration. That acceleration energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery and can be used at the push of a button. Since endurance racing is all about efficiency, an average of 80% of the braking energy recovered from the front axle is immediately converted to drive energy. Porsche also notes that if the engine was required to supply this electrical power, it would to increase its output by over 100 hp (74 kW), which would increase the fuel consumption of the 919 by more than 20%, equating to an extra litre of fuel per lap. Alongside the mechanical enhancements, a number of software updates in terms of traction control and hybrid power management have helped to further improve the driving quality of the 919. LMP1 cars have three fewer sets of tyres in 2017, now required to last around double the driving time, the software updates are claimed to have a positive effect on the service life of the tyres, Porsche are even aiming for tyres to run quadruple stints in night time driving when track temperatures are cooler.

PORSCHE CELEBRATES

ANOTHER VICTORY

WIN AT LE MANS

WIN AT THE NÜRBURGRING

Porsche completed a fantastic race, finishing first with their 919 Hybrid #2 car. This is their 19th overall victory at Le Mans and the third victory in a row. No other manufacturer than Porsche has managed to win the world’s toughest endurance race so many times and is so closely connected to the myth of Le Mans.

CAR

After having achieved the third consecutive Le Mans victory, Porsche also managed a hattrick in the six-hour race at the Nürburgring: Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley climbed on to the top step of the podium. In 2017 the duo were joined for the first time by Earl Bamber in winning this race.

THE TIMELESS MERCEDES BENZ 300 SL ROADSTER www.rmsothebys.com

“There are around 900 million cars in the world,” Mercedes-Benz boss Dr Zetsche once remarked. “But there are only a handful of automotive icons. Our SL is one of them.” Today, the 1960 Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster is an icon of automotive engineering and design. Only 1,858 units would be produced, with only 249 of those being 1960 Mercedes Roadsters; making these some of the lowest production Mercedes classics available in the classic car marketplace today.

The immaculate 300 SL

To say that the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was ahead of its time would be an understatement. The 300 SL heralded a new era for Mercedes-Benz road cars; it utilised an innovative space-frame chassis coupled with a race-bred, fuel-injected engine, and was clothed in breathtaking bodywork.

KESSEL RACING: 7 A NEW SEASON AS PROTAGONISTS

201

Summer, time for racing as Kessel Racing asserts itself more and more in both the Ferrari Challenge Europa and Blancpain competitions, held every weekend on the tracks of the Old Continent. Tests, qualifications, races, are run at a Grand Prix rhythm. A daily commitment for every woman and man in the team, both on the track and at the workshop in Grancia (Lugano), the birthplace of Kessel Racing successes, as a logical consequence of passion and an unquenchable thirst for victory. The settings and actors change, but the storyline of the racing season remains unaltered, with Kessel Racing at the forefront of each category and the red of Ferrari passion behind each victory.

146

We’ve entered the hottest part racing season and not just because of the summer temperatures. The calendars of the various series overlap, giving GT enthusiasts high adrenaline weekends, with races in every corner of the globe, moving the passion and talent of the all involved. For Kessel Racing, the banner year of racing began in Misano Adriatico with the success of the 2016 champions, Broniszewski-Piccini, and the excellent placings of the new Bhirombhakdi-Van Dam team, immediately at ease in a series as competitive as the Sprint Cup. Podiums at Brands Hatch for both crews followed by a weekend of successes in Zolder: the two Broniszeski-Piccini and Bhirombhakdi-Van Dam crews chalked up

KESSEL RACING NEWS by LE GRAND MAG 2017, another year of great challenges for Kessel Racing.

wins in the two races, while the “newly arrived, Earle and Perel, in the Iron Cup, enjoyed success after success, guaranteeing victories in both competitions. On the eve of the third seasonal stage of the Endurance Series scheduled for Paul Ricard, just as this issue of Le Grand Mag is going to press, Kessel Racing counts two more hard-won podium finishes in Monza with Broniszewski-Rizzoli-Cressoni, while in Silverstone it was the turn of the crew formed by Duyver / Perel / Zanuttini to climb the podium for a second position in class, which relaunches the ranking ambitions for this crew. Successful and brilliance in the GT Sports Club where Earle, Scheltema and De Bernardi were on the track, combative and spectacular in every race. And if Kessel Racing has earned consensus and applause for its results in gran turismo races, the landscape has not changed much after the first meetings of the Ferrari Challenge Europa. Valencia saw the debut, in the European series, of the brand-new Ferrari 488 Challenge, the eight-cylinder turbocharged hard-top that this season is the star of the Prancing Horse series. New car, new successes, is the logic of Kessel Racing, who, on the occasion of the seasonal debut in Spain, showed their skill bringing Rick Lovat to success in the second race at Ricardo Tormo, following the second place achieved in race one. In addition to the success of Lovat in Valencia, excellent performances by all Kessel drivers also in Monza: from Scheltema to Cuhadaroglu, Goerke to Schiavoni and Deborah Mayer, winner of the Ladies Cup on the Italian

The Blancpain GT Series is certainly the most competitive and spectacular championship for cars and competitors, in the granturismo classes. Divided into two different series, Sprint and Endurance, competitors compete on the best European tracks in intense races, hard-fought from the first to the last lap. In Monza as in Brands Hatch, in Zolder as in Le Castellet, and finally in Spa-Francorchamps, the Blancpain races always attract large crowds and arouse enthusiasm for the beauty of the cars on the track, for the speed of the drivers, but above all for the paddock open to the public. Only here you can come in contact with your heroes and see close-up the dream cars that make up the starting grid, as well as live the excitement of high adrenaline races.

track and the first woman to secure a win in a Kessel Racing car. From the initial green light of the season in Misano Adriatico there have been many positives.Wins and good finishes alike, in great races which reflect the DNA of those who take to the track, with a passion that characterizes the Swiss team. Right now, the season is at its most complex, with overlapping commitments which see the team involved simultaneously on different tracks over the same weekend, ever committed to the pursuit of success. “Success breeds success”: for Kessel Racing and its people this is more than just a mere motto, it’s almost a style of life, a few words that express the will to win. Always give it everything, to claim victory or just for the pure pleasure of testing yourself in a ruthless environment such as motorsport, where the details very often make the difference. And victories, especially when they come one after the other, as happens to Kessel Racing, are never by chance, but come from attention to detail.

A WINNING TEAM ALSO AT LE MANS Again this year, the Kessel team would not have missed Le Mans for anything in the world. As the small French town was busy transforming itself into the world capital of motorsport, the Swiss team was preparing the Ferrari 458 GT3 of the Mayer-Schiavoni crew. The duo took part in the races of the “Road to Le Mans” trophy, in the first, over the classic 55-minute distance, they finished thirteenth while, in the second event the 458 climbed to seventh, in a battle between aggressive and competitive drivers. The Swiss team, in addition to having its own drivers - Deborah Mayer and Claudio Schiavoni - on the track, also provided technical support, for the third consecutive year, to the US team Scuderia Corsa, competing in the classic 24 hours AM class. The Ferrari 488 driven by the MacNeil-Sweedler-Bell crew finished the grueling endurance race on the podium in third place. Wonderful satisfaction for all those who contributed to this success.

The 1957 Johnny von Neumann and driver Richie Ginther declared, ‘it is the best handling and the easiest of Ferrari 625 all Ferraris to drive in a race.’ TRC Spider is an absolutely stunning automobile, one as dashing in the garage as it is at 120 mph.

Bidding was fierce with the car selling for way above its original £2.4 million estimate. This means you had better bring your big boy wallet if you’re planning on going home with this machine.

CAR F80 RAELI IDEA The F80 Concept was created and designed by Adriano Raeli. Similar to the LaFerrari and Enzo, it adapted many design cues from the previous models specifically the sharp nose and also an aggressive and long rear. And it will not only stand-out because of its stylish looks, it would boast with monstrous power too. Under its hood, Ferrari is going to drop the V12 engine of the LaFerrari, and use a hybrid twin-turbo V8 engine paired with KERS technology. The company stressed that even if it is basically a smaller engine, it doesn’t mean that it would provide less power.

THE GRADUATION

All images © Adriano Raeli

‘’I was in independent studies at ArtCenter and chose this to be my thesis project. I wanted to create something striking before graduation, and what better way than to come up with a hypercar concept. Enzo Ferrari had always been a great inspiration for me, and I wanted to pay tribute to this great idol of the automotive world. My goal was to design a car that would be up to his standards as well as those of Pininfarina, which I have also always admired. I truly wanted the project to express my inner passion for the automotive arts.’’

INSPIRATION Raeli was inspired by Ferrari F1 cars and futuristic Navy fighter jets, and the F80’s powertrain is inspiring as well: A 900-horse, twin-turbo V-8 would rev to 16,000 rpm, and a kinetic energy recovery (KERS) system similar to the ones on the LaFerrari and McLaren P1 would add an additional 300 horses. And because this 1,200-horse rocket would only weigh 1,763 pounds, Raeli claims a 2.2-second 0 to 60 sprint, and a theoretical top speed of 310 mph.

WILL IT BECOME A REALITY?

The heir to the LaFerrari

Raeli says that with his concept he wanted to bring the experience and performance of Formula 1 to the public roads, while not jeopardizing the elegance and distinctive appearance for Ferrari. While the car would have to be limited to make sure its tires can keep a contact patch earthbound, Ferrari puts the F80’s unlimited top speed at 310 – more than 20 mph faster than the current speed Champion Bugatti Chyron.

Raeli’s F80 is completely space-age, with extensive bodywork and an aggressively crouched stance. The appearance of super-sports cars was changing during history, but what is common to all eras is the avant-garde design of these models. For designers of cars, specifically the “artistic” people, Ferrari is the inexhaustible source of inspiration regardless if it’s retro or futuristic ideas, as in this case. With car concepts constantly being released from major marques, it is unlikely for one created as a college project to raise any eyebrows-unless it is for the next generation of Ferrari with looks that are nothing short of ferocious. What you see right here is the Ferrari F80 Raeli idea, created by Italian designerAdriano Raeli. Just like the Enzo and LaFerrari that it would follow, the F80 makes use of most of the identical design cues like a sharp nose and a long aggressive rear. A hypothetical 1,200 horsepower would come from this Prancing Pony, giving it a zero-sixty two mph

time of solely 2.2 seconds, and a high pace of 310 mph. While many of us would have liked to see this thing powered by a naturally aspirated V12 engine, it’s worth noting that the legendary Ferrari F40 was also powered by the same twin-turbocharged V8 power plant. Taking inspiration from Ferrari and Pininfarina, Adriano levels up the design to over 10,000 experience points. At a standstill, the F80 looks ready to take off.The massive inlets give a sense of down force equivalent to the weight of a building. The specifications are modest, but the visuals speak louder than words or conceptual numbers, to say the least. Of course, the car is just a concept at this point. But, Ferrari has the engine the car would uses already in service and the means to shape the car’s futuristic styling. It’s only up to Italy’s best to decide if the F80 or something very much like it will roll for real.

“Couture like never before” is how the venerable British car manufacturer is describing its latest iteration of the Rolls-Royce Dawn. In creating the latest version, design director Giles Taylor tapped Cherica Haye, a textile specialist from the Royal College of Art in London, and leather expert Michelle Lusby, who previously worked at Mulberry, to design one of Rolls-Royce’s most ambitious projects to date. Inside, there’s a white and black exterior scheme with accents of one of the three colours that match the roof. Embroidered headrests and contrasting hand-stitched leather trim also feature. The front and rear door pockets are also appointed in silk, with a Spirit of Ecstasy emblem on each door. ‘Our clients are the very arbiters of fashion, tastemakers who sit in the front row of the Couture shows, themselves influencing evolving trends,’ says Giles Taylor.

Dubbed the ‘racer’, this concept demonstrator will incorporate an array of innovative features and will be optimized for a cruise speed of more than 400 km/h, considering that a typical helicopter currently flies around 160 mph Jean-Brice Dumont, the company’s head of helicopter engineering says the design makes the Racer faster, more fuel efficient, and cheaper to operate. The Racer’s box-wing design, coupled with a light hybrid metallic-composite airframe, provides extra lift. Pusher propellers will increase speed while the helo is moving forward. The French aerial giant also plans to add an “eco mode” to the craft, showing the possibility of electrically powered “start and 180

stop” mechanics in an aircraft engine to save fuel and increase range. The Racer is based on Airbus Helicopters’ X3 prototype helicopter, which set a helicopter speed record at 255 knots in level flight in 2013. Like that model, it uses the main rotor for STOL take-off capabilities, but once the propellers start pushing forward, the main rotor slows down and the box wings take on some of the lifting chores. As such, it works a bit like a hybrid gyrocopter, though such aircraft use unpowered main rotors and powered pusher props. Airbus sees a market for its machine that could rival private planes for city to city transport among jet setters in a hurry. Airbus hopes to make the first flight in 2020. Commercial service could follow five to 10 years later.

While Gulfstream’s G650 private jet streaks along at north of 600 mph, conventional choppers like the police or your local traffic reporter might use maxes out around 160 mph. Quick, but not that quick when talking about flight. Airbus Helicopters unveiled at the Paris Air Show a high-speed helicopter concept, codenamed “Racer” (for Rapid And Cost-Effective Rotorcraft). It is being developed as part of the Clean Sky 2 European research program, which will provide more than €200 million to fund building a Racer demonstrator. “We want to offer high speed at the right cost, over a typical range of 400 nm,” said Guillaume Faury, Airbus Helicopters’s CEO. It combines fixed wings for energy efficient lift, propellers for energyefficient propulsion and a main rotor that provides energy-efficient VTOL

(vertical takeoff and landing) flight capabilities. These lateral rotors as well as the main rotor will be driven by two Safran RTM322 engines. (The RTM 322 was the result of a joint development between Safran Helicopter Engines and British manufacturer Rolls-Royce. In 2013, Safran Helicopter Engines acquired the entire RTM 322 program.) Although every futuristic aircraft seems to consist of electric engines these days, Airbus is sticking to a proven powertrain right here. Airbus is exploring a “stop-start” system that’ll power down one engine during low rates or light loads. Consider it as “eco” mode for the sky. The development of Racer will involve 38 partners from 13 countries. Final assembly of the demonstrator is expected to start in 2019, with a first flight the next year, and 2020 for the first flight.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

DESIGNED FOR JOHANN SCHMIDT

Simon was brought in to design a variety of vehicles for the fictitious Hydra division of the Nazi regime, including the jet-line submarine.

The V16-powered concept roadster featured ten wheels, a three-seat open cockpit and a design clearly inspired by the legendary Mercedes-Benz SSK.

Conceptual designer Daniel Simon for DSX

Daniel Simon is a designer’s God. He has an incredible ability to imagine and create vehicles in otherworldly environments. He’s only 41, but the strength of his vision has already contaminated the planetary imagination. His professional career begins in a formal way for a young talented German: he is recruited in Volkswagen and works on Seat and Lamborghini brands under the supervision of Walter de Silva. He then moved to the Design Center Europe in Sitges (Spain) where he participated in the Bugatti brand revival project. In 2005 he decided to go freelance, creating his own futuristic vision. His talent required sheets larger, whiter, with more dimensions. His first prototype book, Cosmic Motors (2007), has the preface of Syd Mead, the man who had always been Simon’s idol since childhood. Mead is the production designer who created the first Tron scenes of 1982 and cult films such as Blade Runner, Alien and the first Star 188

Trek. In 2019, following Mead’s trail, Daniel Simon is commissioned to draw all the vehicles of the Tron Legacy movie. Daniel Simon’s contribution to the film’s success is evident, his Light cycles and other vehicles light up the public’s imagination. In 2011, he participates in Capitan America’s production and in 2012 marks another masterpiece: he draws the vehicles of another film that will soon become a reference point in the collective vision of the future: Oblivion. Simon now works in Los Angeles on a variety of concept-design projects for Hollywood productions and clients. Simon restlessly fantasises about alternative worlds, and expresses his personal visions through the ever-expanding worlds of Cosmic Motors, The Timeless Racer, and DSX.

EIGHTY SEVEN PARK by RENZO PIANO BUILDING WORKSHOP Exciting things have been happening in the real estate market in South Florida, but they all pale in comparison to the latest project from world-renowned architect Renzo Piano. Eighty Seven Park is a selection of cutting edge private Miami Beach oceanfront residences designed to seamlessly embrace park and ocean in Miami Beach’s newest neighborhood. Renzo Piano is arguably one of the world’s most-famous modern day architects. His buildings include the London Shard, Japan’s Kansai Airport, the New York Times Building, and the Whitney Museum in New York. Renzo’s has another ongoing great project in Miami Beach, called Eighty Seven Park. Currently under constraction in a prime beachfront location next to the largest oceanfrontpark in Miami Beach - the 35-acre North Shore Open Space Park. Yet, with easy connections to South Beach and Bal Harbour, this coastal sanctuary offers all the benefits of life in one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Eighty Seven Park blurs the line between imagination and knowledge. Piano, interior designer RDAI, and landscape designer West 8 worked to bring the outside in. Materials outfitting each home were selected by RDAI to invoke an experience of nature, provided by light oak and Venetian terrazzo flooring, and an organic color palette. West 8 created an absolute botanical sanctuary with 70% of the base of the tower devoted to vegetation, like carefully selected sculptural sea grape trees. Is this the FUTURE of the super yacht?

Yachts have a reputation for being extravagant and excessive playthings. Predicting the future of yacht design is therefore a difficult challenge, with uncertainties about which concepts will make it to construction, and which will be thwarted by owner or classification society, but the signs of change are upon us. Sail into the future with these stunning super yachts: New designs revealed that feature hybrid power systems and luxury spas. From James Bond-style helipads on the bow, to ocean-facing penthouse suites and multiple swimming pools peppering the decks, these futuristic super yachts promise to take luxury sailing up a few knots. Moreover, in recent years, the classic demographic of the superyacht owner is changing. We have known the average age of a yacht owner to be around 63 years old in years gone by, however, with the recovery from the economic crash of 2008, we are seeing an increasing amount of young owners entering the market place. Also, there is an apparent focus on environmental and sustainability among those commissioning today’s new build yachts.

We’re used to seeing some monster, envelope-pushing concepts from superyacht designers, but the 190-metre L’Amage is one of the largest we’ve ever seen. The concept work of Hamid Bekradi was developed with Christoph Kuhnert to ensure the project has what the design house calls “concept plausibility and technical feasibility. Eco-friendly Komorebi features a pair of wing sails that project originator and famed French sailor Mark Pajot says will easily drive the yacht to 12 knots, reducing fuel burn by 30 per cent. Sails are controlled by three buttons. There are five cabins and an extensive entertainment space below. If you are searching for a sense of adventure: Project Norse, designed by Cornwall-based Oliver Stacey in collaboration with BMT Nigel Gee, is right for you: a sail-assisted exploration vessel, with a robust body making it capable of voyaging to both poles through thick ice and treacherous waters. Instead the latest design from Oceanco and Nauta Design, the 102m Project Spectrum, was conceived to encompass a broad range of possibilities, both in terms of her propulsion system and her living spaces. The renowned English designer, Ken Freivokh, has developed the concept of Argo, a 48-meter superyacht for the Rossini’s shipyards, which blends the explorer’s philosophy but at the same time overcomes it. Argo combines several features: from luxury yachts - that provide comfort and privacy beyond the canons - to explorers - reduced fuel consumption, high autonomy and the ability to sail in all areas of the globe.

THE NAME SAYS IT ALL: 120m and much space under the sky

OPEN 120 superyacht concept by Van Geest Design

Dutch design company Van Geest Design have released their Open 120m concept earlier this year. The name says it all: 120m and much space under the sky. This design of Open 120m leads to a simple, but stylish play of lines and surfaces, giving the yacht its distinctive and sleek appearance. Van Geest wanted to create a sleek design that would lead to an unobstructed environment from all guest areas on board. Large forward and aft exterior decks reveal an innovative use of space, ideal for outside entertaining. In the world of superyachts, anything seems possible. The splendid Phoenicia Yacht

lobanovdesign.com

The market for luxury super yachts have been somewhat saturated and had faced very tough times when the consumer spending was down due to the recession. But the market conditions are becoming positive and the overall outlook is good with a promise of a bright future. Some of the top designers in the field of yacht design and naval architecture have been working on some bold and dramatic design that will bring something new to the yachting world. Igor Lebanov is one of them. Only ten years after its foundation, Lobanov Design celebrates great successes this year. The studio has recently seen its 110m launched at Oceanco’s shipyard, with the great honour to be the largest ever built in the Netherlands. Project Jubilee has the exterior design signed by Lobanov Design, as the previous 85.6m Oceanco launched in 2013, known under the name Y708, which the same year won the award for “Best Yacht Design over 50 metres” at the World Yacht Trophies. For that project, Igor Lobanov also received the award for the “Best Designer of the Year.” If you give a look at his Instagram account, you can’t help but to be completely captivated by the magic atmosphere that surrounds some of his projects. Phoenicia is the sail yacht concept he describes as his dream. The concept yacht is a work-in-progess project and alterations and tweeks are continually being incorporated. Recent adjustments to his original design concept, include changes to the beam, the number of masts and the Venetian blinds. Commenting on the changes made to the design, Lobanov stated:

Phoenicia 100m superyacht blends historical influences with cuttingedge design. 203

“Our friends from Dykstra gave a hand on sails arrangement and checked some key parameters of naval architecture. We also decided that the beam had to be changed slightly.” The wide aft decks feature various living areas and room for a helipad. Another key concept is the open deck arranged as a gallery with a specially designed pattern with an Arabian influence, giving a play of shadow and light within. In addition to the unusual exterior styling, designer Igor Lobanov has given the yacht an unconventional bow, provided plenty of open deck space aft and included a helipad, which is more commonly seen on motoryachts. However, the Phoenicia is purely an exterior study, as the technical aspects have been put aside and focus has been given to creating a sailing yacht with both modern and historic design features. “We wanted to see how we could create a 100m plus sailing yacht with certain parameters,” explains Lobanov. “One of the key ideas was to have an all around open deck, arranged as a gallery, with specially designed patterns that would create a mixture of light and shadows.” Phoenicia Sailing Yacht design gives the feeling of thousands of years of history. An “ancient royal ship”. Phoenicians are believed to be the people who invented one of the first alphabets, which served as a basis for the Greek alphabet among others. From the Greeks it was then passed to Romans as Latin and to Slavs and Mongols as Cyrillic. Nowadays a wide range of nations all around the world are using letters that derived from those created in the small area of Phoenicia. For thousands of years, the earth has been explored by people traveling across seas and oceans, and the featured Igor Lobanov Phoenicia Superyacht embodies this history of sailing.

Faena Miami Beach is the new paradigm of the Miami lifestyle, one where design, refined hospitality and culture converge. 1941 architectural gem— is a project that works on many levels. At the urban level, the new tower harmonies with its neighbours to create a perfect synthesis between the gently undulating forms of the historic building, and the sculpted horizontal lines of the new Faena House, itself a contemporary response to its own historic neighbour the Saxony Hotel, also designed by Roy F. France and opened in 1948. The Versailles towers have been designed to maximise views both to the ocean and to the city, articulated by large sweeping terraces east and west that modulate down to a combination of large bay windows with window seats and smaller curved terraces that create a scale change and sensuous articulation—an abstraction of Roy F. France’s curved corners and rippling facades. The Faena Versailles Classic was built inside the historic façade of the Versailles Hotel. The design is stayed Art Deco with a grand lobby, terrazzo flooring and custom chandeliers, in addition to a garden and reflecting pool. On the contrary, Faena Versailles Contemporary is the a new structure next to the hotel and have a design that reflects the hotel’s architecture.Very much designed with proportion and scale in mind, the planning of the interior spaces dictated the rhythm of the expression found when looking at the building from the outside—an almost jazz like composition results.

PUROBEACH ILLETAS, THE NEWEST MEMBER OF THE PURO GROUP FAMILY, HELD ITS GRAND OPENING ON THE 12TH MAY 2017. IT IS THE GROUP’S SECOND BEACH CLUB IN MALLORCA, FOLLOWING ON FROM THE ENORMOUS SUCCESS OF PUROBEACH PALMA. IT IS LOCATED IN THE UPMARKET RESORT OF ILLETAS, NINE KILOMETRES SOUTH WEST OF THE ISLAND’S CAPITAL CITY, PALMA. It is Puro’s most ambitious project yet, with the existing location totally refurbished. It will literally become another piece of Mallorca, as the new building is merged into the natural rocks and vegetation of this beautiful zone. Nomads who want to discover a purely Mediterranean experience will find their oasis here, a merge between Mallorca’s natural landscape and history. The restaurant, sunbed area, wellness centre and beach zones combine wonderfully with Arabic influenced fountains and arches, Mallorcan olive trees, natural wood and the beguiling crystal blue water of the Mediterranean. There’s even a natural cave, which has been converted into an indoor space for events. Puro’s new experience seeks to recapture the 70’s heyday of Illetas, when it was one of Europe’s hotspots.

Amid Maine’s Victorian-style bed-and-breakfasts, the Camden Harbour Inn stands apart with its sleek interior furnishings and top-notch amenities. Overlooking the harbour in Camden has, no surprise, a maritime theme: the 20 rooms are each named after famous ports used by the Dutch East India Company. But instead of fishing nets and ship’s wheels, the highly-rated décor favours sleek contemporary aesthetics, created by a Dutch designer. You will never tire of the breathtaking 180-degree views of the village, harbour, mountains, Penobscot Bay, and the evergreen islands. Your hosts, Oscar Verest and Raymond Brunyanszki, are from the Netherlands, and they have updated this New England landmark with a refreshing European sensibility. After a complete makeover, the Camden Harbour Inn offers you a new standard of quality and service. Inn’s AAA four diamond award-winning restaurant, Natalie’s, is a uniquely stylish and welcoming place with a lively dash of Euro verve. The menu celebrates an entirely fresh approach to the very best ingredients - some familiar, some surprising - creatively paired, never over-worked, always brought together with extraordinary results. Award-winning Chef de Cuisine Lawrence Klang seeks out the harvest of Maine fishing boats, farms, and gardens and transforms these honest, unsullied ingredients into distinctively new presentations that reflect his imaginative interpretation of classic French cuisine with a modern twist.
