Chanel Presents

Kaia Gerber

IN THEIR LATEST ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN PHOTOGRAPHED BY KARL LAGERFELD Kaia Gerber made her debut on the couture scene earlier this year on Chanel’s Paris runway. The model definitely made an impression as Karl Lagerfeld called her back to shoot the advertising campaign for the brand’s latest handbag collection. For the location, Karl Lagerfeld chose Coco Chanel’s immaculately preserved apartment, which is perched atop the label’s flagship shop in Paris. Surrounded by elegant bookcases and plush sofa cushions, Kaia shows off three of Chanel’s signature handbags. The campaign was captured by Kagerfeld himself and portrays the young beauty carelessly lounging just as Coco may have done in her time. Kaia wears outfits in housesignature: black and white, accessorized with the streetstyle catnip slingbacks, tweeds and a chic party dress. Chanel’s Couture Show for this season was a gardening extravaganza with a bubbling fountain, elaborate trellises, sandy pathways and over 10,000 English roses that decorated the Grand Palais. The runways were decked with tweed separates in sweet and delicate colors. Kaia was one

of the models that waltzed along the runway in shimmering gowns in sequins, chiffon, tulle, feathers and iridescent pink from this collection. A closer look at the collection reveals nearly 1,000 hours of work and approximately 123,670 embellishments. A single garment from the couture collection includes 40,000 beads, 5,650 stones and Swarovski pearls, and 74,300 sequins and required 820 hours of meticulous work by Chanel’s petites mains. The embellishments are so tightly embroidered that they are only noticeable with careful observation. Spring was everywhere and this included atop headbands, along waistlines and especially adorning transparent ankle boots with Lucite heels that were hand-embellished with 11,880 beads and 122,500 sequins. Lagerfeld transported viewers to secret garden with a most fashionable collection. The advertising campaign in black and white photography is a sharp contrast to the spring flair of the Haute Couture Show. However it best illustrates the special and timeless relationship between a woman and her bags. Lagerfeld 41

PHOTOGRAPHY

visually tells this story in a way that transcends generations, styles and eras by bringing the future face of fashion into the heart of its past: “Chanel’s residence is a historic relic — one that serves as a sanctuary to the iconic designer’s creative processes and influences.” The space is signature Chanel, complete with plush sofas, quilted cushions and ornate gold accent pieces. But beyond opulence, it’s also a setting filled with objects that bear memories and tell stories of a life lived by a woman many decades ago. The handbags featured in the campaign each have a history of their own but are forever linked to the brand as iconic pieces. The Gabrielle handbag, envisioned by Lagerfeld as a bag befitting the label’s founder, has a contrasting structure being both strict and supple. The double metallic chain allows the wearer multiple ways to carry it. Chanel’s Classic 11.2 and 2.55 Handbags are immediately identifiable by their silhouette. With the rectangular shape and boyish 42

allure, the Boy, was created by Lagerfeld inspired by Gabrielle Chanel’s first love. The Vanity Case is a miniature version of the timeless accessory. It comes in an elegant shape with a handle and shoulder strap and secret padlock and key perfect for all you travel necessities. This season these handbags are reminiscent of the garden theme that featured heavily on the runways, display soft greens and blues along soft shades of pink. There are some clear and colored PVC bags, as well as an abundance of sequins and beading. Some of the handbags are in calfskin, lambskin, goatskin, patent leather and denim. The combination of colors and textures provides for some straightforwardly pretty bags that will almost undoubtedly attract attention. Though its not everyday that a young model may get a call from Karl Lagerfeld to meet him in Paris for a photo shoot for a brand like Chanel, it is quite easy to understand why this fresh new face attracted Lagerfeld’s attention.

Baxter Cinema. Design Capital

Emotion and design take center stage at Baxter Cinema with the theatrical presentation of their latest collection, which demonstrates a passion for materials and expert craftsmanship. Baxter’s magic lies in choosing the most pristine leather, work it to preserve its natural quality with the imperfections that render it unique and using it in unusual ways.

THE STORY OF

BAXTER

IS A FAMILY ONE,

OF PASSION AND DESIGN MADE IN ITALY Luigi and Paolo Bestetti

Baxter’s new collection was presented at the Milano Design Week earlier this year with a theatrical installation in their Milan showroom.

Baxter tells the story of Italian excellence. Since 1990, it has become synonymous with expert craftsmanship and impeccable selection of materials. Its unique furniture elements feature quality leathers, furs and fabrics reinterpreted with English taste and Italian expertise. The story of Baxter is one of passion and design made in Italy. It is a story of a family, of entrepreneurs Luigi and Paolo Bestetti, who have passionately crafted genuine materials into unique furniture creations. Baxter opened the doors to their showroom, Baxter Cinema, in 2015 after a painstaking restoration of Milan’s famed President Cinema. Extensive work was done to preserve the original structure while rendering the space dynamic and elegant for a furniture showroom. Baxter Cinema occupies a space of 1,200 square-meters and is complete with a bookshop, a club bar and a projection room.

MOOD IS

TRAVEL

FOR BAXTER,

“IT IS EXPRESSED IN AN UNPREDICTABLE MIX OF MATERIALS, COLOR AND TEXTURES”

Baxter’s new collection was unveiled earlier this year during the Milan Design Week at Baxter Cinema. Reminiscent of a theatrical performance, rich velvet curtains opened to reveal each installation of the new collection. Different settings took the stage showcasing décor elements of the collection in domestic scenarios. Key furniture elements were superbly incorporated to elegantly complete each scene. enveloping visitors into a welcoming atmosphere of relaxation and refinement. Living rooms come to life with sumptuously soft sofas, linear coffee tables and decorative yet formal armchairs. Every element has been incorporated into each setting blending a remarkable alchemy of colors, materials and styles. Each environment is the result of a combination of heterogeneous pieces that as a whole create a unique attitude of design rather than a particular style.

LANDO SIMONETTI interview FOUNDER & CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT LA MARTINA

Lando Simonetti, born in Rome, Italy in 1942, moved to Argentina when you were only six years old. You started your professional life in Buenos Aires and you came up with the idea to launch a brand linked to the sport of polo, traditional sport in Argentina. How did everything start? The story of La Martina began in Buenos Aires in 1985 with the idea of creating a brand that would define polo and in particular Argentinean polo, which is the best in the world. The first La Martina brand products were obviously technical products for the game (boots, saddles, bags, tack). Clothing arrived some years later when I decided to create a polo team. The first items were jerseys for the ‘La Martina’ polo team. It was a great success! Other teams followed, wanting personalised jerseys and, over time, we wound up supplying the polo world championships. After this start, the textile sector of the business began to expand even more, and not only in Argentina. We began to sell products outside the country, opening the first stores in Europe and the United States.

We began to open stores in Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia, which led us to expand our product range. Today, La Martina is the only brand that represents polo players and their families in this incredible, glamorous world of polo.

La Martina has become one of the leading casual brands in the fashion arena. What is the full story and are you satisfied with the results till now? The story can be summarised by the evolution of the company, which began by following polo players and their families in the international polo circuit, providing them not only with technical equipment, but also, little by little, with casual wear. Since polo is international, our clothing began to appear in many cities where the sport is played, where most of the tournaments take place, and where the best Argentinean players –masters in the sport – moved around. Yes, I am very satisfied with the path taken and the results we have achieved, even if there is still a lot of work to be done.

Do you play polo? I played when I was young.

Identity behind the brand. Polo equipment but much more… What is La Martina today? We began with technical products and in our international growth the products most requested were obviously accessories and textiles.

84

La Martina is sure to be a hit for its stylish sports and casual wear.Who wears La Martina, can you draft the Identity Card of La Martina aficionado? Polo players and their families share our values (passion, spontaneity, fair play, perfection), which are recognised in an international brand that is both loyal to its origins and innovative at the same time. You first started by positioning the brand in Argentina through polo equipment products. Then you started to open a few stores in polo community areas such as Palm Beach, Florida and London, UK. Can you tell me the brand strategy for the forthcoming future? The strategy in the medium-term is to position the La Martina brand among younger people. We want to rejuvenate our products and services to appeal to millennials.

3 words that best describe yourself. Don’t ever … ever … ever give up!! If you could change something in the fashion world, what would it be? I wouldn’t change a thing. Even ugly fashion is necessary. How is the business of La Martina developing? Considering the international economic and political crisis, we’re doing great. I am very happy - we have a great future ahead of us. Where are the significant growth areas? Geographically: south-east Asia, China, Japan and Korea, areas that are still new for us, where polo is still relatively unknown. Demographically: millennials are the new clients we are trying to focus on.We began 30 years ago and we are now experiencing and addressing the new generation among La Martina consumers.

The best way to reach these new consumers is through e-commerce. For more than a year we have had a new e-commerce platform, directly managed by us, and the positive results we have seen are incredible. What about media. Chief and Washington post owner Jeff Bezos recently said that “Newspapers will be a luxury item like horses are”. I’ve never heard Bezos’ statement, but I certainly agree with him. Printed newspapers will not disappear with the advent of digital papers, but will be viewed as a luxury product. Have you ever thought of creating lines dedicated to other elite sports? No, I’m convinced that success is achieved by focusing on only one sport, in our case polo, and constantly improving in this sector. The perfect testimonial for La Martina would be…? Steve McQueen. Not only was he a great actor who represented what was ‘cool’ at the time, but he awas also a biker and a sports car pilot and in addition he played polo very well. Who’s or Whom are your style icon? Steve McQueen is still a current style icon, even if he is from an older generation. More recently, I would say Prince Harry. A free spirit, sometimes a rebel, very modern, he has never tried to impress anyone, and he also plays polo very well!

La Martina is one of a growing number of emerging-market companies to develop a successful global brand. It has done so via its passion for polo, its strong Argentine roots, exclusivity, distinctive stores and prestige, highquality authentic products. About 20 per cent of materials continue to be locally sourced; those for the technical equipment – such as saddles, kneepads, mallets – are 100 per cent from Argentina. At present La Martina is sold in 56 countries through an exclusive distribution network that counts multi-brand channels and more than 85 mono-brand boutiques, and is present at more than 100 polo events every year throughout the world.

ELEGANCE

“La Martina is a family business with family values. We have a passion for the sport of polo and for supplying polo equipment and clothing. Polo is fascinating, fast and dynamic. It sends adrenaline through your veins, but it is also dangerous, especially in Argentina where the speed of the game is much faster. La Martina started out making polo equipments bearing in mind the technical and design aspects, and above all, the safety of the sport. Today, this is still our philosophy... “ 85

ELEGANCE This season, the Hackett gentleman has three options to choose: City Shades, The Great British Stripe and Devon Air. Featuring Hackett Mayfair’s renown tailoring, City Shades juxtaposes a depth of texture with simple lines in a color palette of soft spring colors like sand, stone, grey with a splash of aqua and blue.

The Great British Stripe offers a more relaxed yet elegant approach. Colors are mostly red, white and navy paired with hints of mint and sky blue. Blazers for any occasion are mixed with chinos and shorts in mint and sky blue, complete the look with accessories from the Hurlingham collection. The Devon Air is best described as poolside elegance with nostalgic patterns and washed out colors.

The Fleurier Amadeo by Bovet www.bovet.com

The Fleurier Amadeo 7-Day Skeleton Tourbillon is the first skeletonized Tourbillon from Bovet’s Fleurier collection. This tourbillon watch manufactured by Dimier 1738, Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie Artisanale, is a new anthem to the decorative arts. This tourbillon watch gives a clear idea of the efforts that must have been expended by the watchmakers in achieving such a result without making too many technical concessions. This is especially true considering the vulnerable and delicate nature of open-worked movements, and their escapement. For this model, Pascal Raffy and his teams took a different approach in order for it to achieve aesthetic excellence in this watch without reducing reliability and precisiontiming performances. By using three-quarter plates a great deal of light pours through the tourbillon carriage, thus increasing the mechanical density in the upper section of the movement. This is important since the latter contains the two traditional barrels that supply sufficient energy to ensure a 7-day power reserve. The skeleton Amadeo Tourbillon watch represents the ultimate expression of the use of volumes that in make it more a sculptural masterpiece than a decorated mechanism. The cut-out shapes, the engravings and the contrasts between the different surfaces accentuate the complexity of the mechanism and magnify all the details.

TAILORED STORIES The suiting street. A significant place to be for those that are into high-end, impeccably made bespoke clothing. From the late 18th century tailors began moving into the Savile Row. It became synonymous with high quality tailoring serving the rich and powerful. A World-Famous Clientele It’s been the go-to destination for fashion-conscious men for centuries. The following are just a few of the most notable. The late, great Winston Churchill frequented many of the Row’s top designers on a regular basis, including his very favorite, Henry Poole & Co. In fact, it was this particular tailor that was responsible for Churchill’s now iconic pin-striped suits, as well as other staples. To this day, Henry Poole & Co. still gets ongoing requests from high-end customers for custom-made suits just like the ones Churchill made so famous. Mr. Charlie Chaplin’s legendary portrayals of the “little tramp” on the silver screen, baggy suits and all. However, in his off-screen life, Chaplin was just as well known for being a well-dressed, dapper man of impeccable taste, so naturally he was a Savile Row customer as well. He is well known for wearing classic designs from the likes of Gieves & Hawkes in some of Old Hollywood’s most famous photographs of him. Horatio Nelson. also wore gorgeous uniforms made by well-known tailors in the Row. In fact, he was killed wearing one of them at the Battle of Trafalgar. Of course, these are just a few of the many famous folks that have visited the Row in search of the best custom-tailored clothing money can buy. Others have included the likes of Frank Sinatra, Jude Law and the Beatles to touch on just a few noteworthy names.

Savile Row is today modern and superb then ever, with a range of tailors providing bespoke tailoring to customers in suit styles ranging traditional to modern cutting edge. Illustration by Paula Jáuregui

La Martina’s new collection shows a new direction, which incorporates contemporar y expressive codes that epitomize the lifestyle of the polo champion. La Martina encompasses the spirit of the inexhaustible globetrotter, playing particular emphasis on three very important polo nations: Argentina, England and the United States. A novelty in this collection is a structural revolution. We embark on a journey between the wild plains and the euphoria of the city in Argentina, La Martina’s motherland. The Argentine polo player demonstrates a natural balance, on one side the natural wonders, impetuous waterfalls,

Details in tassels and fringe are an expression of the wild landscape of deserts and the countryside. This part of the collection features the lightness of linen and cotton in maxi dresses, voluminous shirts and knitwear for daywear. Decorative elements and graphics include the Argentine flag and embroidery of one of La Martina’s hallmarks the Porteña Firulete. Our next stop takes us to England and the romanticism of the Royals. Polo was imported from India following a British military expedition. The rules and codes of the game have been transformed from their once recreational nature to an actual discipline. Details draw inspiration from London’s cosmopolitan character. It is the city of contrasts. It is an equilibrium of the solemnity of the Royal Family and the many subcultures like Mod and Punk that have inhabited it. The collection features three distinct lines that aim to suffuse the frail line between active wear and casualwear without, of course, forgoing elegance. The formality of the Lifestyle line has been dramatically reduced in favor of a more versatile approach for everyday and sporting contexts maintaining La Martina’s refined distinctiveness. The Guards line, a tribute to the Royal Family guards, also undergoes a change where the serious features of the garments have been revisited for a lighter and more spontaneous style. Lastly, the brand introduces for the first time the Crossover line. The line is a combination of iconic and traditional models enriched with or iginal graphic designs that offer ample space for individuality and personalization. La Martina continues its co-branding collaboration with Maserati with a line of versatile active wear. The line is a celebration of the passion for sports and high quality standards that these two brands embody.

To its owner, however, it is simply “moving art. The collection comprises racecars and rare limited edition models. The 1958 Ferrari 259 TR with its sexy silhouette and signature color. Forbes estimates Ralph Lauren’s collection to be worth at least $300 million. The cars have been showcased in select museums and shows and have won twice at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The 1929 4.5-liter Bentley ‘Blower’ is a fitting addition. It is one of 55 Bentley’s with a supercharged Blower engine with a horsepower of 175. It is one of the most coveted vehicles of the automotive ‘Belle Époque,’ having participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1930, 1932 and again in 1933. 133

AUTOMOTIVE The collection features a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder with its aluminum 1.5-liter boxer engine designed by Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann. Ralph Lauren owns the 61st of a total of 90 550 Spyders built. This same model gained notoriety having claimed the life of James Dean. Lauren’s passion goes beyond merely collection; in fact he painstakingly has restored some of the models, such as the 1955 Mercedes Gullwing. According to Lauren, “I wanted to restore them as I thought they should ideally be.”

In 1986 Lauren acquired the 1960 Ferrari 250 GT. This is a variant of the 250 with a shorter chassis, Pinifarina body by Scaglietti and a V12 engine with 275 horsepower. With its revolutionary design by William Heynes, the 1955 Jaguar XKD offered aerodynamic stability and competitive advantage on the track. “I somehow felt that the real beauty of owning a rare and magnificently designed car was the fact that you can use it,” stated Lauren. “You can look at it, enjoy its visual qualities, as with a painting, but you can also get inside and drive it - which means both enjoying the drive itself and going somewhere with it.”

All vehicles are kept in working condition in a secret garage. The 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 MM with its 225 horsepower engine is reputed to be ‘best pre-war sports car.’

Many consider the 1938 Bugatti 57S Atlantic the most prized inclusion of the collection. With only 2 in existence (the other was sold in 2010 a California museum for $40 million), this model was exhibited and won the 2012 Concorso d’Eleganza in Villa d’Este.

DRIVING DYNAMICS

AUTOMOTIVE

The optional sport differential further optimizes handling by actively distributing torque between the rear wheels. It sends more torque to the outside rear wheel when accelerating for added agility.

Audi SQ5 3.0 TFSI www.audi.com

Powerful performance and improved efficiency combine in the new Audi SQ5 3.0 TFSI to incarnate now more than ever the concept of a practical SUV. The Audi SQ5 has a turbocharged 3.0 TFSI engine with an output of 354 hp. This means that it can go from zero to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and has a maximum speed that is electronically governed of 250 km/h. The new Audi SQ5 comes with a smooth, eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission that can also be manually operated. The model is particularly efficient, featuring a new combustion process developed by Audi that is based on the “B-cycle” process in combination with high-pressure injectors centrally located in the combustion chambers for a shortened compression phase. This allows for more efficient combustion and increased engine efficiency. The 3.0 TFSI engine consumes 8.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.

136

Audi’s famed quattro permanent all-wheel drive contributes to the sporty handling of the new SQ5. During normal driving, it distributes the engine power with a slight rear-axle bias. When necessary, power is sent to the axle with the better traction.Wheel-selective torque control is active on all types of surfaces allowing enhanced traction especially when cornering. The new electromechanical power steering of the SQ5 with S-specific tuning greatly contributes to the model’s handling. It can be further enhanced with dynamic steering for situations of increased speed and steering angle. Driver assistance systems are in place from Audi’s broad portfolio such as predictive efficiency assistant, which provides specific driving tips to help the driver save fuel; the adaptive cruise control (ACC) with traffic jam assist and Audi active lane assist to name a few.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

The rear contoured bumper houses the S-specific twin exhaust tailpipes of the dual-branch exhaust system and an aluminum diffuser clasp. The panther black color is only available for the new Audi SQ5. The exterior design highlights the car’s sportive nature. The body is comprised of a combination of aluminum and extremely high-tensilestrength steels. Contoured front and rear bumpers highlight the dynamic feel with S-specific air inlets and honeycomb grille. The standard model comes with 255/45-series tires mounted on 20-inch cast aluminum wheels (21-inch wheels are available as an option). The interiors are elegantly furnished in dark tones with seats in Alcantara or Napa leather with a diamond pattern, leather steering wheel with contrast stitching and stainless steel pedals and footrest. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 550 liters that can be increased to 1,550 liters. The SQ5 includes MMI navigation plus with all-in-touch and an 8.3-inch display. Audi connect enables the vehicle to connect with the Internet via LTE. The optional Audi Virtual Cockpit displays key information in sharp graphics on a 12.3-inch monitor for added style.

AUTOMOTIVE THE POWER

UNMISTAKABLE SOUNDTRACK

Like every engine to come out of Maranello, the GTC4Lusso T’s V8 turbo has all the classic Ferrari power unit qualities: razor-sharp throttle response, blistering performance, continuous and powerful acceleration at all speeds, an exhilarating soundtrack and compact dimensions. Mounted low down in the chassis, it helps sharpen driving dynamics.

In line with the finest Ferrari tradition, the GTC4Lusso T has been given its own unique and utterly unmistakable soundtrack. In addition to the flat-plane crankshaft, which synchronises engine firing, and equal-length exhaust headers which equalise the sound, the exhaust line now features a new central section along with a largerdiameter silencer.

THE GEARS VARIABLE BOOST MANAGEMENT One of most innovative features of the GTC4Lusso T’s V8 is Variable Boost Management, a control software that adjusts torque delivery to suit the gear selected, delivering increasingly powerful pick-up as revs rise, whilst optimising fuel consumption. And all without impinging on driving pleasure.

The Power of Evolution

As the car goes up through the gears (from 3rd to 7th), the amount of torque delivered by the engine increases all the way up to 760 Nm in 7th gear. This has allowed Ferrari to adopt longer gear ratios in the higher gears to the benefit of fuel consumption (the car’s range is, in fact 30 per cent more than the V12-engined model).

Unleash the Power

The car’s V8 is the latest evolution to emerge from the engine family that was named the 2016 International Engine of the Year. The 3,855 cc power unit is both compact and efficient, developing 610 cv at 7,500 rpm, resulting in a specific power output of 158 cv/l, the highest in its category. It is also responds instantaneously to the throttle delivering increasingly powerful acceleration (760 Nm of maximum torque between 3,000 and 5,250 rpm) while optimising fuel consumption. The instant throttle response typical of Ferrari V8 engines is guaranteed by a flat-plane crankshaft, compact turbines featuring

138

twin-scroll technology and a three-piece cast exhaust manifold and turbo housing, the former with equal-length pipes to optimise pressure waves in the turbine. The car’s excellent performance across the entire rev range, on the other hand, is the result of intensive research into maximising combustion efficiency. The solutions adopted include high-tumble intake manifolds, specifically shaped to improve air entry to the combustion chamber, an ion-sensing system with adaptive ignition and multi-spark functionality which optimises combustion both under high and partial loads across the engine’s rev range.

CLASSIC

Kessel Classic is the place where the owners of important vintage cars seek the best care. But it is also motorsport because our historic cars must continue to perform, even in races.

KESSEL IS ... CAR AUTO

Ferrari, Maserati, Bentley and Pagani: only the most exhilarating brands to offer unparalleled, complete driving pleasure. Sportiness, elegance, comfort, exclusivity and the highest standards of service for motorcar enthusiasts.

RACING

Kessel’s DNA is in motorsport and, as such, we offer gentlemen drivers the opportunity to compete in the most important GT championships; the Ferrari Challenge and Blancpain GT Series.

IN LUGANO, THE SWISS CAPITAL FOR VINTAGE CARS 161

KESSEL RACING NEWS by LE GRAND MAG

The Unique Flavour of the Past Above: the Ferrari 275 GTS is one of the most recent complete Kessel Classic restorations. This spider was born in 1964, as an open top variant of the 275 GTB, and inherited the legacy of the legendary 250 GT California. It is fitted with a 260hp V12 engine that allowed it to exceed 240 km/h. The body, signed by Pininfarina, was completely different to the GTB and more similar to the previous California. Even today, to drive, it is a source of enormous pleasure, especially when you can make those twelve cylinders sing in unison.

162

Young-timer, old-timer, classic or historic cars: different names depicting the same driving pleasure, the authentic pleasure of driving cars from yesteryear, far from modern assistance systems, from electronic aids, from regulations that limit the genuine sound of the engines. But it also means the pleasure of touching simple materials: the aluminium hand-crafted body or the leather of the interior, cut by skilled hands. The classic car is all this, a slower pleasure, which takes you back to times gone by, a pleasure to be savoured in every detail, both from the car and from the scenery that surrounds you. It is easy, therefore, to understand why vintage cars are increasingly sought after, have more and more value and are fought over by passionate collectors. For many there is certainly the knowledge that these motorcars represent a safe form of investment, but just as many want them for the joy of fighting with the gear lever in an interior that smells of gasoline. For these vintage driving enthusiasts, Kessel

KESSEL RACING NEWS by LE GRAND MAG

Classic was born in 2012, maintaining, restoring, and perfecting these cars, to return to the race track. Today it is a complete infrastructure, composed of craftsmen, panel beaters and leatherworkers. The mechanics are professionals of the old school, who understand exactly how the engine is running just by listening, who make millimetric adjustments with a screwdriver, to achieve the exact set-up to make them run perfectly, just as the testers of the time would have wanted. The body-shop of Kessel Classic is prepared to bring the car to its former glory, but, just as importantly, also to respect and privilege its originality. Better to restore than to replace, better to repair than to change. The other key professionals in the restoration process are the consultants for the various brands. If, for the Ferrari world, Kessel is a reference, for the other car manufacturers, the restorations are carried out under the supervision of people who know every last detail of the models, who know where to find original parts at the best possible prices, who can certify the cars once completed. Everything dedicated to keep the history of the motorcar alive, thanks to Kessel clients who choose to maintain unaltered our four-wheeled heritage that the most renowned brands have created over the decades. (to name but two in Switzerland), are perfect contexts to enjoy the drive and the scenery in which they are held. Then there are also the races, in which Kessel customers participate with the support of the motorsport team. The Monte-Carlo Historique Rally, for example, won by an Alpine A110 by Kessel in 2016. Whereas at the Bernina Granturismo 2017, Ronnie Kessel took the Alfa Romeo GTA, once owned by his father Loris, through the bends of one of the most beautiful alpine passes. Or, again, the F1 Historique in Monaco, won in 2016 by the Ensign of the Lugano team, driven by Alex Caffi. The commitment of Kessel Classic does not create frivolous, display objects, but brings the most intriguing cars of all time to their maximum splendour to see them again on the bends, on the road or on the track.

CLASSIC ART

The hands of the Kessel artisans and beaters are never idle. Once a car is finished, the inspiration is born to create furnishing objects which express the passion for vintage cars either at home or in the office. The minibar fridge with the appearance of the Lancia Aurelia B24 America, the shelf that recalls the face of the Ferrari 312B driven by Clay Regazzoni, the champagne holder with the appearance of the legendary “Sharknose, the hall table that accurately reproduces the front form of the Ferrari 275 GTS or the Maserati style umbrella stand: the imagination of our clients and the craftsmanship of the Kessel Classic professionals give life to true works of art. 164

Prelude Gigayacht

YACHT

www.larakiyachtdesign.com

Abdeslam Laraki, a designer and founder of the US-based yacht design firm Laraki Yacht Design studio, has created the impressive, nine-deck 163m motor ‘”gigayacht” Prelude with waterslides, fish ponds, an indoor tropical forest and the de rigueur helipad. With the essence as well as the potential to challenge any other yacht design, Prelude superyacht is a visual overview of the level of creativity and esthetics to expect from the new studio.

© Laraki Yacht Design

Laraki is a luxury sports car manufacturer. Its owner is Laraki Abdeslam, a designer who started the creation of luxury yachts, before devoting himself to producing cars. He took some time off from the ongoing design projects to create Prelude, a nine deck, 163 metre superyacht that has the essence and the potential to challenge any other yacht design.

Entirely made of carbon fibre, with an aluminium chassis, the Laraki would be built around a 7.0-litre, quadturbocharged V8 engine producing anywhere from 1001 to 1750 horsepower - or 746kW to 1305kW. That automatically puts it in the same league as a Bugatti Veyron.

His challenge is to invent and create an innovative and true one of a kind yacht. A yacht with its own character, style and looks, as far as possible from the rest. He allowed himself to take risks proposing new shapes that he hopes are still in harmony with the yacht’s natural environment, the ocean. It’s currently a design concept, but the company is working on a smaller 89-metre Privilege model.

The VIRTUS is a powerful and striking 102m vessel which makes careful and sparing use of curves to achieve a design which will look just as stunning in 10 years’ time as she does today. Oceanco has worked with the world’s most renowned designers to create a yacht with a timeless appeal. More than ever before, the complexity of design, exotic materials and superior standards, stretch the boundaries of what Oceanco can build. The goals for this DP062 Virtus Yacht design were to develop a vessel of under 3000 GT on a 105m long platform. Immediately the images of Frigates and Corvettes came to mind, long and thin with sparing use of graceful curves. The look of VIRTUS combines some striking hard edges and single curvature surfaces reminiscent of naval vessels,

The Radiant Return of Louis Vuitton to Place Vendôme After exhaustive renovation work, Louis Vuitton opens the doors of its Parisian flagship in Place Vendôme, just a stone’s throw from where the brand’s history actually began. The 18th century Parisian townhouses, originally designed by Versailles architect, Jules-Hardouin Mansart, have returned to their former splendor. The façade is adorned by a radiating sun, a creation of the brand’s visual creative director Faye Mcleod. Inside, visitors enter the world of Louis Vuitton Maison, or as architect Peter Marino says, “the House of Vuitton.” Marino expertly designed the flagship in which the label’s rich history permeates throughout the building.

On a first visit, clients are invited to an elevator ride to the shop’s high jewelry workshops, which fittingly oversee Place Vendôme. From there clients embark on a journey of the brand amidst couture and ready-towear collections, shoes, accessories, jewelry, watchmaking, and of course leather goods including historic pieces that have become synonymous with the Maison. Among these unique pieces are the Library Trunk commissioned by Hollywood screenwriter Mrs. W and the Steamer Trunk owned by Parisian jeweler Mr. O. More discerning visitors can enjoy a shopping in privacy in the store’s private salon located in the upper floor. Light features as an essential element in the interior design of the boutique. To decorate the space, Marino has also incorporated over 30 artworks by artists such as Philippe Anthonioz, Stephen Sprouse, Laurent Grasso and Gregor Hildebrandt. The flagship also houses the first Louis Vuitton’s Objets Nomades collection. 2 Place Vendôme, 75001, Paris

WINE

The wine growing cooperative of Cantine San Marzano lies in the southern Italian province of Puglia where the grape of choice, the Primitivo, thrives on the fine textured, red earth that gives its vintages distinctive and robust flavours. Temperatures in Puglia are high throughout the summer and the climate is generally dry with little rain. These hot, dusty days and cold nights provide ideal growing conditions, enhancing the quality of the grapes and delivering balanced, rich, smooth and intense ripe dark berry flavours, ideally paired with meat, game or pasta.

Cantine San Marzano offers a wide variety of wines as diverse as the dry red Primitivo from the Manduria DOC to sweet dessert wines that wear their Manduria DOCG designation with pride.

Cantine San Marzano Interpreters of the Puglian Renaissance www.cantinesanmarzano.com

Cantine San Marzano epitomises a unique manner of interpreting wine in Puglia, which finds its roots in two main values: respect for tradition and modernity. Cantine San Marzano has always played a central role in understanding and enhancing the value and profile of Primitivo di Manduria. Over the years it has been able to produce word-class wines by combining the respect for a thousand-year long tradition with a drive for continuous research. Long-sighted in creating “icon labels”, Cantine San Marzano is committed to reinterpreting indigenous grape varieties with a contemporary approach, to deliver a clean, elegant and unique taste. As a result, it has achieved a status of innovator and leader recognized by competitors, press and consumers. According to the words of one of the most famous Italian wine-writers, Luca Maroni, “San Marzano is the new classical among this strong movement of renaissance of Italian wines, having believed in wines with a strong focus on fruit and cleanliness, with a magnificent body, brilliant colors and, more than anything else, outstanding perfumes”.

Culinary take over of Milan’s Galleria www.ristorantecracco.it

Carlo Cracco opens the doors of his new restaurant in Milan’s exclusive Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II. According to the chef this is a culinary temple, “We no longer speak of a bare and raw restaurant, but of the ability to accommodate a large number of people in a privileged lounge in the city.”

Chef Carlo Cracco has a new venue for his restaurant in Milan’s iconic Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II. Here visitors will enjoy refined dishes with traditional flair in an elegant location. The restaurant occupies five stories each with a special purpose, including the Sala Mengoni and private dining rooms.

The restaurant occupies 1,118 square meters that are spread over five floors and 4 kitchens. The new venue has concession of 18 years and a hefty rent of 1 million a year. At the restaurant, visitors follow chef Cracco in a culinary journey. The Cellar located on the basement or as the chef prefers, “under the feet of thousands of people who walk every day” features a collection of almost 2,000 wine labels. Located on the street level is Caffeteria Bistrot, with windows overlooking the Galleria, this is the most accessible environment and proposes breakfasts, light lunches and aperitifs. There is also a chocolate corner that has inspired much curiosity. As the weather improves this season, visitors will be able to take advantage of the elegant and spacious terrace. The main floor, which runs along the Gallery’s octagon, houses the real Ristorante Cracco. Marking a sharp contrast from his previous venue, light predominates the scene. “Finally we will have eight windows, counting that I have not seen the light of the sun for 17 years. Here everything is different, classic, in line with the Galleria. “ The restaurant accommodates 50 guests and offers a choice of a-la-carte or tasting menu. The menu is faithful to the chef’s passion for tradition featuring some of his signature dishes along with a few innovative proposals. The second floor houses the “Salone Particolare,” and area reserved for receptions and special events with incredible views of the Galleria. This floor also features the “Fumoir” a space dedicated for smokers that would like a pre-dinner aperitif or a liqueur after their meal. The chef reassures those worried about smoking and related smells as stateof-the-art aspirators are installed to remove fumes and provide fresh air. This is also the location of the two new privée rooms for 4 or 8 eight guests. The Pastry Laboratory is located on the next floor. This area is not accessible to the public and dedicated to the production of pastry and chocolate, by pastry chef Luca Sacchi, one of Cracco’s longtime collaborators. Ristorante Cracco finds the perfect home in Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II, the perfect place to superbly combine food and design. The wait had been long, but as the chef explains, “We could not be in a hurry, the spaces are important, there were stuccos and frescoes to be recovered and five floors, one different from the other to be fixed. We have chosen to proceed with care, to enhance a unique context.” The main entrance to Ristorante Cracco is though Galleria; there is an additional entrance for private events along Via Silvio Pellico 6.
