Lotus began his career with a bridal assignment; according to him he was mostly ‘self-taught’ acquiring skills along the way from shooting test shots for models to more important

projects. As his career picked up he turned to advertising campaigns for top labels and now is the man behind the camera snapping away shots of Hollywood’s biggest stars. In fact, his book features a foreword by Eva Longoria a regular in his photographs. “I’ve been able to train my eyes to see only black and white,” he explains in the book’s preface. “I know it sounds strange, but I can isolate all other elements, seeing only the patterns. I can see the photograph, while others only see the outside.”

1. W agon Wheel:

One of Lotus’ most celebrated images with its elegant geometric play of light and shadows is also featured on the cover of his book.

2. L otus’ work is often seen in the

pages of Vogue Italia, Vanity Fair, GQ and W Magazine. He is also known for campaigns for Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier and Escada.

3. L otus is able to capture

moments against contrasting settings like wild surroundings creating a bridge between the world of fashion and nature.

3. “ Art gives me the freedom to

share images I love that were never selected for editorial purposes and also some which were shot only for my personal pleasure.”

Hollywood photographer Bob Willoughby is known for his timeless photographs of Hollywood’s leading ladies, his favorite however remains Audrey Hepburn. Willoughby first became acquainted with the actress on assignment in 1953 when she first arrived in Hollywood. His book, Audrey Hepburn, Photographs 1953-1966 is an exquisite collection of the actress’s beauty and elegance both on the set, behind the scenes and in her private life from her Hollywood debut to her career peak that included My Fair Lady and her Oscar-winning performance in Roman Holidays. The book is an unrivalled record of one of the 20th century’s touchstone beauties.

“She exuded some magic warmth that was hers alone.”

The t wopiece swimsuit had been first proposed by Jacques Heim back in 1946 however, it was Louis Réard’s risqué design that attracted attention that same year. His new swimwear model was made of 194 cm of printed fabric and consisted of four triangles connected with string revealing the wearer’s navel and much of her rear. Dancer Micheline Bernardini bravely modeled his daring design when it was presented at Paris’ Piscine Molitor, and like the Bikini Atoll from where it took its name, this garment exploded onto the fashion scene. Although it did attract attention, some considered it scandalous and the bikini was banned in beauty contests around the globe and was even declared

sinf u l by the Va t i c a n . Over the years it became a favorite item for the likes of Brigitte Bardot who never hesitated to flaunt one along the French Riviera. Ursula Andress was another to popularize the item; her famous bikini from Dr. No was auctioned back in 2001 and fetched an impressive $60,500. Many other leading ladies have donned the bikini both onscreen and during their holidays including Rita Hayworth, Elizabeth Taylor, Carrie Fisher adding to the popularity of the garment. UK Magazine editor Dominic Smith referred to the bikini as “possibly the greatest enjoyment-giving invention of the 20th century.” Now, 72 years after this fashion piece first hit the runways it continues to

Latest trends for this summertime staple with a scandalous past

Bikini Fashion

Since its first appearance on the fashion scene the bikini has always turned heads, this season is no exception ranging from sophisticated designs to sportier models perfect for any holiday set trends every summer season. In recent years the Réard swimwear label has been re-launched by entrepreneur Richard Emanuel intent “to carry on that spirit of innovation across the business, from fabric technology and sustainability to social media and content.” The brand’s new collection made from high tech fabric Lycra Xtra Life features a revival of Réard’s original ITB newsprint bikini by designer Celine Adler. Other pieces in the collection like the Jane or Marilyn models are inspired from Réard’s days and archive photographs from the 1940s. Réard swimwear is available online and comprises a selection of beachwear items. Newcomer to swimwear fashion, Ann-Marie Buckley CEO of Ava Verdú aims to “create swimwear that was timeless and would last.” She brings an architectural approach to designs with lightweight Italian fabrics that have UV40+ SPF protection. Items have excellent shape retention and rapid dry technology. Ava Verdú’s collection features bikinis in elegant styles like the Aloha, Bon Bon and Bravo in exquisite colors adorned with the label’s stingray accessory.

Although Louis Réard has been credited as the ‘inventor’ of the bikini this may in fact be attributed to the Romans. Mosaics in Sicily’s Villa Romana del Casale depict young women in bandeaulike bikinis participating in athletics dating to 300AD. However it was really in the 1960s that the bikini hit mainstream with hits like Beach Party and One Million Years BC. Playboy Magazine made a toast to bikinis featuring one on the cover of their June 1962 issue. While Babette March became immortalized with her white bikini in the January 1964 issue of Sports Illustrated.

Made in Brazil swimwear label Adriana Degreas is known for luxurious ‘Bain Couture’ garments preferred by today’s most fashionable ladies like Naomi Campbell. Degreas’ creations prove that sexy can be classy. Her swimwear collections feature innovative shaping techniques to ensure the perfect fit. Her latest collection is an ode to Brazil with vintagelike drawings of tropical birds adorning garments in solid bold colors. Bikinis are featured in bandeau, triangle top and halter-neck variations with low or high-waisted bottoms. Elegant cover-ups, sarongs and dresses complete this collection for a glamorous summer. Eres’ swimwear collection is a tribute to Italian artisanship in timeless styles suitable for all body shapes. Featuring bandeau, small triangle, halter-neck triangle and one-shoulder bikini tops with matching bottoms in high-waisted or bikini briefs in brilliant colors ideal for a Cinecittà leading lady or a jetsetter cruising along the Mediterranean waters of the Italian Riviera. Cover-ups are available in cotton satin and lightweight Zéphyr cotton in matching vibrant tones as well as Wild leopard print. The Piano line presents colorful silk options for stylish beach looks. This season, Spanish designer Andrés Sardá presents a collection infused with color and energy. The Barcelona-based label presents a mix of colors and patterns available in a different styles ranging from one-piece suits, to bikinis and trikinis with matching accessories and cover-ups. Bikini tops and bottoms are separate and can be chosen according to preferred shapes and styles. The collection features retro-inspired pieces like the Heron series in white on navy polka dots, the mini bikini tops and low waist bottoms in microfiber of the Roller series or stripped bikinis of the Pitta series with plunging neckline and shape defining piqué fabric.

CHRISTOPHE GILBERT

A detail-maniac fanatic

Belgian photographer Christophe Gilbert is renown in the advertising world, but his portfolio tells another story, one of amazing images that have been digitally enhanced to mesmerize audiences.

57

PHOTOGRAPHY

Brussels-based Christophe Gilbert was born to a photographer mother and advertising turned artist father. While art was definitely in his genes, he was first introduced to photography with a Kodak Instamatic at the age of nine. He considers himself a ‘self-made photographer’ although vividly recalls working as an assistant to a celebrated automobile photographer in the 1980s which served as an educational stepping-stone. Working closely with cars he noticed that they reflect everything around them. These metallic surfaces taught him how light gives life even to a piece of metal. “I soon realized,” he states, “that photography had not that much to do with techniques. It looked to me quite simple: all you really needed was an eye, preferably related to a brain. Once framed, anything could make an interesting picture.” Early in his career her turned to advertising photography, which greatly impacted his work. “It wasn’t about what you see,” explains Gilbert, “or even how you see things anymore, but about how you wanted things to be seen.” These “pictures with a goal” as he refers to them, allowed him to unleash his creative genius. For Gilbert, the task at hand was not one of a mere translation of a concept. Instead “I try to capture the idea,” he says,“then look for the best way to improve it into an image.” He has incorporated his observations and

“IT WASN’T ABOUT WHAT YOU SEE, OR EVEN HOW YOU SEE THINGS ANYMORE, BUT ABOUT HOW YOU WANTED THINGS TO BE SEEN. PICTURES WITH A GOAL.”

experience to create his own distinctive style. “A truly good idea,” according to Gilbert, can always be transcended by its formalization.” His creative process begins with an idea. “What you have to do is get the whole picture in your head before starting to work,” he explains. Then it gets interesting. According to Gilbert, “here is where it really starts; you perceive other opportunities.” His keen eye, allows him not only to take in the world around him, but also to imagine a concept and transcend onto a new idea, or as he prefers, “you can’t resist to experiment new ways.” Gilbert has been dubbed the ‘master of visual manipulation’ thanks to his awe-inspiring photographs and mastery of digitally enhancing water, paint and chocolate to his own will. He describes himself as a ‘detail-maniac fanatic’ absolutely believing that the smallest of details can make a huge difference. Gilbert has an amazing portfolio that combines elements from photography and advertising in a distinct vision resulting in pictures that express his passion, humor and unique perspective. He has worked for industry giants like Volkswagen, Ikea, Ogilvy and LG Electronics to mention a few. His future projects? “To re-invent your job every time,” he adds. “That’s probably why you can spend an entire life doing it without being bored.”

A look at artisan work in Milan’s Brera district www.giosamilano.com

Nestled in Milan’s artistic Brera district, you’ll find Giòsa, la Bottega del Coccodrillo, the artisanal crocodile workshop. Alongside art galleries, antique dealers and design boutiques Giòsa brings to life artisanal masterpieces made of the most precious crocodile skins. These handcrafted items comprise a full range of products of longlasting quality. Giòsa is the brainchild of Giorgio Santamaria, who followed his family’s craftsmanship heritage and combined it with his creative flair. The Santamaria family owned a small workshop in the outskirts of Milan in the 1950s that specialized in the manufacture of products made with precious skins. Giorgio grew up surrounded by this devotion to craftsmanship. He has worked with crocodile skins for over 30 years with leading Italian and International labels side by side with designers sharing their style and his know-how. Internationalization of the “Made in Italy,” which flourished in the 1980s, pushed Giorgio to travel across the globe exploring various locations that appreciated and treasured this recognition. In 2004, Giorgio launched Giòsa, combining his skills, trade secrets and creativity. The label was created with the aim of offering a wide selection of products exclusively in crocodile to a demanding clientele. Giorgio’s passion for working crocodile skins, his perfect knowledge of the material’s flexibility and his workmanship have allowed him to interpret it to create masterpieces characterized by quality, exclusivity and authenticity – the distinctive signs of luxury. The only limits for any Giòsa creation are the client’s desires.

Artisan workshops like Giòsa place uniqueness and client satisfaction at first place in their scale of values. Giòsa’s prized creations include iconic handbags, totes and clutches perfect for day or night. Business bags, briefcases and travel bags are also available. Their small leather goods items include wallets, agendas, iPad covers and cases, beauty cases and more. Giòsa also offers a ready to wear line, which features coats, jackets, gloves, footwear, hats and belts all in crocodile skin. Expert craftsmanship heritage working crocodile skins and the shop’s location in Milan’s coveted artistic center are the perfect combination for creating products that embody “Italian Heritage” and are a hallmark of bespoke items. This atelier allows visitors a glimpse of Giòsa’s philosophy, which embraces craftsmanship whilst creating an exclusive product. The possibility to see craftsmen at work in downtown Milan is absolutely unique. Not to mention that this provides clients the opportunity to learn about the meticulous process and work details. DOLCE & GABBANA DEVOTION www.dolcegabbana.com

Fashion Devotion, the name of Dolce & Gabbana’s latest collection is a homage to Sicilian Baroque, in particular to the Oratorio di Santa Cita in Palermo, very dear to Domenico Dolce. The fashion duo started their runway show swinging open the gates, similar to those of a church, and began with a technological procession of drones carrying handbags. On the technological note, the show incorporated live streaming and social media as well. As the first model hit the catwalk the words ‘fashion sinner’ were very visible on her black dress. The new collection includes superbly crafted brocades, luscious velvet and exquisite embroidery reminiscent of the vestments worn by the clergy of the Vatican City. These sumptuous fabrics are expertly paired with t-shirts and sweatshirts in sartorial profanity. Green pink and a deep Cardinal red added a spark of color to the black, white and gold that featured heavily throughout the collection. Cherubs, crosses and gems embellish dresses and jackets with sequins and velvet. Fashion Devotion is a beautifully tailored ode to Catholicism in our era.

ROLEX GMT MASTER II

The cosmopolitan watch par excellence: precise, reliable, robust and functional Introduced in 1955, the GMT-Master II has become one of Rolex’s iconic models. It was originally designed to aid pilots in navigation, the watch has a 24-hour bezel and a 24-hour hand making it possible to read the time in two different time zones. The marque unveiled the latest model at Baselworld 2018 featuring for the very first time the bezel with two-tone Cerachrom insert. Over the years Rolex has mastered the use of ceramic allowing the brand to equip their watches with cutting-edge ceramic bezel inserts and a varied color palette. This 1959 Porsche 356 A Carrera 1600 GS ‘Sunroof ’ Coupé was specifically requested for long-distance touring by its owner, Robert Blackwood. In 1948 Ferry Porsche had created the 356 automobile which is perhaps the most iconic shape in motoring. In fact, this model remained unchanged for over 65 years becoming a blueprint for future Porsche vehicles. The most potent variation was the 356 Carrera model. This featured the Fuhrmann-designed four-camshaft racing engine and was available in ‘GT’ race specification and ‘GS’ touring specification aimed for individuals who like Blackwood were interested in long-distance touring. This specific model was delivered to Blackwood in Atlanta Georgia, according to its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity with factory options that included: a Blaupunkt radio, two loudspeakers, a rear luggage rack, an electric clock, an 80-liter fuel tank, a roll bar, and a very desirable sunroof. The car also featured the Carrera 1600 GS-specification drivetrain making it one of the priciest and most desirable vehicles. After Blackwood, the car passed through two owners before becoming

property of H.D. Clark who used it frequently for almost 10 years until he fell ill and was unable to drive it. The car remained in storage until it was purchased by a Porsche enthusiast who requested a concoursquality restoration. Beginning in 2002, the car underwent a complete restoration by Porsche specialist Gary Kempton. At the same time, another Porsche specialist Vernon Crotts, was tasked with rebuilding the engine (number 93126, with transmission number 28925). The car was completely taken apart and expertly restored to concours standards. The restoration also included repainting it in the original Porsche Silver Metallic with interiors in dark blue leather highlighting the model’s subtle elegance and the flowing lines of the body. Although the current owner has driven the car scarcely he has however very successfully exhibited winning awards for the model’s condition and authenticity. The Carrera 1600 GS models that feature the Porsche 356 body are among the most valuable and most thrilling to drive. This expertly restored model with its rare sunroof, one of Porsche’s finest, is also beautiful to behold.

Sports and luxury cars, at 360 degrees, starting from production cars, to the classics, and on to racing. A “car lovers playground” as defined by Kessel, a company founded in the early seventies thanks to the passion of its founder, Loris Kessel, a former Formula 1 driver who returned to Ticino to open his business after his experiences in the top flight of racing. Since 2010, the year of Loris’s passing, his son Ronnie has lead the family business, today a point of reference throughout Europe. The “A stands for Auto, or rather, the activity linked to the sale of new cars. The brands represented by the Ticino company are the finest on the market: Ferrari, Pagani, Maserati, Bentley. The excellence of the first, the search for the perfection of the second, the day-to-day sportiness of the third and the luxurious elegance of the fourth offer every enthusiast an entire world in which to feel at ease, feel excited, feel pampered. Kessel Auto has

created an efficient environment where to find the best services for the entire range of these four manufacturers: the workshop and body shop boast the best professionals in the region, while, for the most demanding collectors there are structures designed ad hoc to accommodate and pamper the cars that are entrusted to Kessel. Finally, the “R” of Racing. The company’s DNA, impressed by the eclectic driver that was Loris, lives on in the races. The championships in which Kessel Racing takes part every season - only at the wheel of Ferrari GT - tell of the successes of the Swiss team. In the Blancpain GT Series, Ferrari Challenge or Le Mans Series, throughout Europe and beyond, the name Kessel Racing has always been synonymous with ability and victory. But that’s not all: the fundamental ingredient remains the passion, for racing, for driving, for cars. CAR, in fact.

CLASSIC ART The hands of the Kessel artisans and beaters are never idle. Once a car is finished, the inspiration is born to create furnishing objects which express the passion for vintage cars either at home or in the office. The minibar fridge with the appearance of the Lancia Aurelia B24 America, the shelf that recalls the face of the Ferrari 312B driven by Clay Regazzoni, the champagne holder with the appearance of the legendary “Sharknose”, the hall table that accurately reproduces the front form of the Ferrari 275 GTS or the Maserati style umbrella stand: the imagination of our clients and the craftsmanship of the Kessel Classic professionals give life to true works of art. 158

Airbus Corporate Jets, ACJ, presents their new cabin design concept called Harmony. This cabin design combines the comfort and space of a widebody cabin with the practicality to suit the longest of flights. “Long-haul flights provide time for productive work and socialising, as well as rest,” explains ACJ President Benoit Defforge, “and ACJ’s Harmony cabin concept is wonderfully well designed to enable all of these, while bringing the world within a single flight.” Comfort and space are combined to produce a consistently harmonious customer experience. Passengers are greeted by a holographic globe that shows the aircraft’s position. Initially proposed for the ACJ330neo Family, Harmony can be incorporated to other Airbus widebodies like the ACJ350 XWB.

80-meter Super Yacht www.vangeestdesign.com

Pieter and Tracey at Van Geest Design have over 35 years of combined experience in yacht and interior design. The VGD 80 meter yacht has a focus on pure design with an uncluttered image. Or, as the team at Van Geest Design explains, “we believe today’s yacht to be a personal journey focused on an unique experience and the emotional impact it delivers.” Both Pieter and Tracey have demonstrated their talent working on numerous projects that range from 10-meter to 95-meter vessels in Europe and beyond.Their knowledge of exterior and interior yacht design combined with their experience in shipyard production have given them an artistic and practical approach to design. Van Geest Design evolve with their creations which always feature something innovative and unique. This 80-meter vessel with its clean design and sleek lines gives the impression of straightforward engineering and simplicity. “The challenge is not to create something different, but to create something unique in its philosophy and execution.” The designers aimed to integrate the interaction between the external environment and the internal spaces of the yacht. It should create an enhanced sense of outside space and comfort by bringing the living and lounge areas towards the exterior decks allowing guests to truly relax ‘outside.’ VGD 80M has four superbly designed aft decks. The owner’s deck, connected to the upper deck, spreads over 320 square meters with

lateral private balconies. This area includes a saloon with panoramic windows overlooking the horizon. The helicopter landing area is located forward of the bridge. The rear section of the bridge deck contains the main salon and guest entertainment areas. The yacht features the signature VGD hell in an inverted position creating smooth lines that flow to the main deck cabin windows. The main deck includes guest lounge and cabins with a glass swimming pool that extends over the transom for a sensation of freedom. Each guest cabin features large seaside windows, these views are also available from the private bathrooms. The lower deck has been designed to accommodate the spa and wellness area at water level for an illusion of being at one with the surrounding sea. The lower deck will also accommodate tenders and toys, forward of the spa area, allowing for a user-friendly access. Van Geest Design is studying variations to this original plan for the 80-meter yacht in order to better accommodate specific requests. “We embrace innovation and integrate it in different forms within our design process.” The color split between the hull and the superstructure gives this yacht a sense of speed and performance while lowering its visual profile. This concept yacht was designed to include dual 2450 horsepower engines expected to power the vessel at a top speed of 17 knots with a range of 7000nm.

According to Wally President Luca Bassani, “a relevant technical attribute of Tango is to have the immersed volume of the hull more forward than the previous Wallycentos, and the aft lines are cleaner and more stretched: an hydrodynamic option that I much appreciate.” The yacht’s interiors are a perfect match to the vessel’s sporty personality. Three cabins accommodate up to six guests. The owner’s forward stateroom features a unique large sliding hatch to aid sail handling while racing and provides an under the sky effect during cruising. The main salon aft, engine room, service area and guest cabins have also been brought forward so the weight is concentrated over the boat center of gravity. “Tango is our largest project to date and also we believe the most innovative, the most stylish, and certainly one of the most satisfying to develop,” explains Mark Mills. “We owe our involvement to the vision of Luca Bassani who suggested us to bring a fresh mindset to the Wallycento design question.”

A richly carved fireplace is located on one side of the room, directly across this is the door to the Queen Elizabeth Room, another of the event rooms in the house. However the true, pièce de résistance of the room is the mahogany dining table in the center of the room. This exquisite three-pedestal dining table can accommodate up to 26 guests seated in plush red chairs in tone with the room’s wall coverings. However a spectacular setting is only part of hosting an event, the rest lies in service and catering, and in this aspect The Ritz London is second to none. As a matter of fact, The Ritz London was awarded in Royal Warrant by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales for Banquet and Catering Services in 2002 and has become the only hotel across the globe to receive such an honor. Whether you opt for an intimate dinner party or a lavish banquet, the William Kent Room is your choice combined with the expertise of The Ritz London’s impeccable service. Regardless the occasion, guests can enjoy the delectable dishes by Michelin-starred Chef John Williams MBE who draws inspiration from classic and traditional dishes of the last century with a flair of contemporaneity and fresh gourmet cooking. The menus feature the ‘Best of British’ season produce and will certainly delight even the most discerning of palates. The William Kent House is an exquisite setting for any event, whether you select the Queen Elizabeth Room for a cocktail party or afternoon tea or the Music Room with its pink hues and pastel color palette for a large reception, the William Kent Room is by far the most majestic of all. During your visit we recommend a view of the Grand Hall with its exquisite Victorian staircase in gilded wrought iron for another of the architectural wonders of this house.
