From the Chair

Dear friends of the Herbert H. Lehman College Foundation,

The 2021-2022 academic year was one of awakening after the long transition from the global pandemic, and on the Lehman College campus this has meant a new beginning for the College as well as for the Foundation. While our entire community experienced unanticipated challenges, for Lehman students the challenges of the pandemic were exacerbated by time away from the classroom, by financial and food insecurity issues, and by the issues of connectivity.

As a Foundation Board member, I am grateful to so many of you in our extended community who responded to appeals for financial support for scholarships, the Food Bank, and micro-grants. I am ever so mindful and impressed by the enormous resilience of Lehman’s students, faculty, and staff – and by the entire community’s determination to pull together to ensure that every student has an even opportunity to complete his or her pathway to graduation. I cannot thank you enough for what you have done for Lehman during this unparalleled time.

As we move forward, I ask that you continue to partner with the Herbert H. Lehman College Foundation as it seeks to raise the sights of the College – amplifying the school’s ability to educate and serve its students by providing the best academic programs, student supports, and enhancements to education that can only happen through philanthropy. It is through our partnership with each of you that we will see Lehman College continue to provide exemplary educational opportunities for one of the most diverse student populations in the country, creating transformational results not just for our students, but for their families and their communities.

As a member of the Board of the Foundation, I believe in Lehman’s promise – and I am honored to collaborate with you to ensure that its promise continues to be fulfilled.

Sincerely yours, William Lash Chairman, Herbert H. Lehman College Foundation (2019-22)

Annual Report 2022 3
Herbert H. Lehman College Foundation

Dear friends and colleagues,

After 18 months at Lehman College, and having served a number of other institutions previously, I can unequivocally state my admiration for this exceptional institution. It is home to an extraordinary community: students, faculty, staff, and, sitting at the table with us as philanthropic partners, alumni, advisors, and friends. What Lehman accomplishes yearly is a testament to the collective efforts of this community and all of our partners listed in this publication.

In its 54 years, Lehman has inspired and educated close to 100,000 alumni who have impacted the Bronx, the City, and the world. An ethos of empowerment permeates the campus, impressing upon our students that each of them has the power to change the world for the better. And they do. Our alumni are the nurses, doctors, and health administrators who courageously fought the COVID pandemic over the past three years. Our alumni serve as legislative and city leaders in the Bronx and beyond.

H. Lehman College
From the President

Our alumni are the educators who propel new generations of K-12 students to excel and aim for their dreams. Our alumni are the young entrepreneurs who innovate business practices and create jobs. And they are artists, designers, actors, accountants, musicians, mathematicians, biologists, physicists, social workers, audiologists, nutritionists, philosophers, etc. In a word, they are changemakers.

Likewise, those of you in Lehman’s extended community should know that each of your philanthropic contributions, no matter the amount, has the power to change a young person’s life for the better. Your gifts provide scholarships, stock the food bank, fund educational and technological initiatives that ensure student success, and support many other mission-critical activities—and we are grateful.

It is your generosity—and what it has helped us achieve— that attracted the attention of MacKenzie Scott, whose transformational $30 million gift two years ago created the scaffolding for further investments in our students and mission. This year, Lehman reaped the rewards of these investments when U.S. News & World Report ranked it among the top performers for social mobility, and for a second time, it was named a leader among HispanicServing Institutions by the U.S. Department of State.

These accomplishments would not be possible without your generosity and partnership. In this season of light, we send you our most sincere thanks and gratitude.

With best wishes for the holiday season and New Year,

Duke of Gloucester Visits Lehman College

His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester visited Lehman College

on October 25.

He was welcomed by CUNY chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez and Lehman president Fernando Delgado, who both thanked him for his patronage of the St. George’s Society of New York (SGSNY) and support of the scholarships it provides to students at Lehman and other CUNY colleges.

His Royal Highness had an opportunity to speak with some of this year’s SGSNY Scholars at Lehman—14 in total—and was presented with the College’s highest honor in recognition of his sponsorship and charitable work on behalf of the Society.

“It was a great privilege today to award the Lehman College Presidential Medal of Honor to His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester for his support of our students and our institution through the St. George’s Society of New York,” President Delgado said. SGSNY was founded in 1770 with a mission to help British immigrants in New York. It now provides assistance to those who trace their heritage to Britain or one of the 56 Commonwealth nations—including Jamaica, Ghana, Nigeria and Trinidad. Lehman’s relationship with the organization originated in 2008; the partnership has since generated more than $1.2 million in scholarships to Lehman College seniors needing financial support to complete their degrees. Nearly 350 students—primarily first-generation students of color—have received the prestigious scholarships to date.

From the Executive Director

Dear Lehman College friends and family,

This past year has brought remarkable success to Lehman College thanks to your generosity, which afforded many students the experience of a Lehman College education. Tuition assistance, mentoring, contributions to the Lehman College Food Bank and to the student emergency fund—all supported by philanthropy—are just a few of the ways you have helped keep students in school during times of economic insecurity. Your gifts have immeasurable impact. When students persist and graduate, their achievements directly impact their families, their professions, their communities, and the world-at-large.

It is important to credit the guidance of the Herbert H. Lehman College Foundation’s Board of Directors, thoughtful volunteers who walk with the staff of the Division of Institutional Advancement daily to think through strategies that will enlarge the group of donors and philanthropists who are making the difference for our students and Lehman’s mission. Likewise, the staff of the Division of Institutional Advancement is focused on ways to sustain and grow initiatives that enhance the academic lives of our students and secure their futures.

Thank you again for all that you do each year to support Lehman College’s success.

With very best regards,

Susan E.
