Dissection Boards Dissection Board The Dissection Board is constructed of a heavy duty, hard acrylic plastic material that makes it ideal for supporting soft tissues that are subjected to the cutting and dissection process. The shiny white or blue surface provides an excellent background contrast for visualizing specimens. They can easily be positioned on the board without slippage or moving around on the surface. The board is supported by five rubber feet that are positioned on each of the four corners and in the center to raise the board off the table or grossing station base. CODE

Feather Blades Feather Disposable Microtome Blades The Feather Autopsy, Trimming and Dissection range is internationally renowned for its sharpness and versatility. Made from stainless steel, each blade is heat treated and finely ground in three stages to produce a precise cutting edge. The blades are then specially coated to minimize friction and maximize blade longevity. A variety of blades are available, each suited to a particular application or tissue type: Feather S35 – A low profile blade for all routine sectioning. Feather R35 – Enables easier ribboning. Ideal for hard fibrous tissue. Feather N35 – Suitable for hard tissue and for thin sectioning. Feather A35 – For routine sectioning of soft and hard tissue. Also suited for thinner sections. Feather S22 – For cutting soft tissue and obtaining extremely thin sections. Ideal for skin, lymph node and renal biopsies. Feather S35L – A longer 120 mm version of the Feather S35 to facilitate the cutting of larger blocks normally on a sledge or sliding microtome. Feather S35LL – A longer 180 mm version of the Feather S35 to facilitate the cutting of very large blocks. A sliding microtome is required to use this blade. Feather C35 – A disposable carbon steel blade ideally suited for sectioning in a cryostat. Able to shear very thin frozen sections. Feather S35 High Profile – Twice the depth of the Feather S35 (requiring a specific High Profile blade holder). Suitable for all routine sectioning. With the exception of the C35 Blade, it is recommended to trim in all Feather microtome blades to improve blade longevity. During trimming‑in of the blade, care must be taken not to damage the surface coating, as this can cause scoring. Available in packs of 50. CODE

Biopsy Pads Biopsy Pads are made from open‑celled foam, which allows fluids to transfer safely and thoroughly around tissue while holding the specimen securely. To prevent floating and avoid artifacts, Biopsy Pads should be presaturated in fixative. The thin design helps eliminate excess pressure from being applied to unfixed specimens, reducing the risk of tissue sticking to the pads or fibers coming apart during embedding. Available in white or blue foam, circular or rectangular. The thinner pads also allow for less fluid carry‑over during processing. CODE

06 – Paraffin

Paraffin Paraplast® Paraplast is recommended for general tissue embedding. It is composed of a refined mixture of highly purified paraffin containing plastic polymers of regulated molecular weights. This supports improved tissue infiltration and superior quality sections with minimal compression. Paraplast gives brittle, difficult to section tissue an innate elasticity, promoting wrinkle‑free sections. It has a melting point of 56° C. Paraplast Plus is suggested for large tissue or tissue that may normally present infiltration issues. Paraplast Plus contains a small percentage of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), allowing accelerated tissue penetration. It has a melting point of 56° C. Paraplast Xtra is recommended for lower temperature infiltration which aids in the prevention of tissue distortion. It is composed of a unique blend of low molecular weight polymers and highly purified paraffins for compression resistance and ribbon continuity. Low viscosity permits complete infiltration of dense tissue. It has a melting point of 52° C. Paraplast Highmelt embedding media is made from a combination of highly purified wax and plastic polymers of regulated molecular weights. Paraplast HM is most commonly used when sectioning with a sliding microtome and in exceedingly warmer climates where sectioning with conventional paraffins is difficult on rotary microtomes. It has a melting point of 60° C.

Chemical Control Airchek® Badges Airchek Badges provide an innovative, simple and effective system to monitor vapour levels. Standard badges are available for formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, xylene, toleune, and isopropanol. The Airchek badges provide continuous sampling for personal monitoring and can give the measurements required under Government regulations. The badges are simply clipped on to the technician’s clothing and a record is kept of name, location and time. One badge will provide continuous sampling over 8 hours and a second badge can be used to supply information to analyse a 15-minute period during peak exposure. Both badges are then sent to Leica Biosystems to be forwarded to an independent accredited laboratory for analysis. CODE

D-Formalizer® Pads D-Formalizer Pads reduce formaldehyde exposure by absorbing and neutralising any excess formalin. The durable blue surface of the pads provides an excellent contrast to even small pieces of tissue. The Pads are also useful for soaking up leakage and de-odourising vapours in other applications. They can be used to line shelves which hold specimen containers that may seep formaldehyde around the lid, or to line transport boxes where leaks may occur. D-Formalizer Pads are available in various sizes and also in a convenient roll so that lengths can be cut as required. For best results, the D-Formalizer Pad Roll should be used with the D-Formalizer Pad Dispenser. Pads come in packs of 25 and sizes include 203 x 254 mm, 280 x 356 mm, 406 x 508 mm. D-Formalizer速 Powder D-Formalizer is a safe chemical treatment for neutralizing spent formalin. It leaves a clear solution, free of solids and aldehyde odor, that can be disposed of without clogging the drains. Simply add one packet of D-Formalizer to a gallon of used formalin (or 4% glutaraldehyde) and agitate gently. After 15 minutes, the product can be safely poured down the drain in compliance with local ordinances. The resulting solution will have a pH between 6 and 9 and will be free of polymer by-product. An aldehyde kit is also available to test for residual aldehyde and includes 100 tests per box. D-Formalizer is available per package or in a case of 10 packages CODE

F.C.G.速 Unlike general absorption products, which soak up spillage, F.C.G.速 deactivates chemicals and converts formaldehyde into a solid slurry, inert mass of urea-formaldehyde which can be disposed of as a non-hazardous waste. It is effective on 37% formaldehyde and takes just 10-15 minutes to convert the liquid to a solid slurry. Vapors will be neutralized in around 7-10 minutes. F.C.G. comes in an easy-to-hold pack containing 680 gm - enough for even large spillages. One side of the container allows F.C.G. to be poured, the other side allows it to be sprinkled less liberally for smaller incidents. One container of F.C.G. treats approximately 500 mL of 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin. DESCRIPTION

Nitrile Glove The Nitrile Glove is made of 100% pure nitrile. It offers a higher level of resistance to nuisance nicks, cuts and abrasions and offers superior splash protection against irritating chemicals when compared to natural latex or vinyl equivalents. These gloves are just 4mls thin and provide excellent tactile sensitivity. After being worn for a short period of time, the glove conforms to your hand size for greater comfort and reduced perspiration. This special polymer formulation of nitrile does not allow adhesive label materials to stick to it. Thin nitrile exam gloves are three times more puncture resistant when tested against comparative natural latex and vinyl gloves. They are 91⁄2”

Alcohols/Acids Acid Alcohol Acid Alcohol is used in histology and cytology to remove excess staining and define nuclei following hematoxylin staining in the H&E and PAP methods. In order to produce a good H&E stain with crisp nuclear detail, it is critical that certain Hematoxylins are differentiated correctly, making Acid Alcohol a highly effective solution. Available with 1% or 0.5% hydrochloric acid in 70% reagent grade alcohol, this Acid Alcohol can greatly improve reproducibility of staining results and help achieve standardization. DESCRIPTION

Decalcifiers Decalcifier System Decalcifier I is a unique decalcifying solution that has the ability to fix and decalcify at the same time. Needle biopsies may be completely fixed and decalcified in one hour or less. Small bone specimens and calcified arteries may be completely fixed and decalcified in approximately 2‑4 hours. It is recommend to use 20 times the volume of the specimen. Following decalcification, the specimen is ready for processing without first having to wash. Tissues decalcified in this solution cut with ease and routine H&E techniques produce excellent stained sections. Larger specimens, 3 to 5 millimeters thick, can immediately be placed in Decalcifier I to fix and initiate decalcification overnight. The following morning, if the specimen is not yet decalcified, transfer it directly to Decalcifier II to complete demineralization that same day. The Surgipath Decalcifier I‑II combination can save valuable time and more importantly, valuable specimens. CODE

Solvents Clearene Clearene is a selected blend of terpenes formulated specifically to replace xylene and toluene in histology and cytology laboratory procedures. It is less oily than other solvent substitutes and therefore dries quickly and does not leave a residue. Clearene penetrates tissue rapidly without overhardening and is safe to use with all open and closed system tissue processors. It is miscible with alcohols, paraffins and mounting media. It contains an antioxidant to prevent stain fading. Clearene is biodegradable and offers the desirable characteristics of a good solvent but not the harmful drawbacks of aromatic hydrocarbons such as xylene and toluene‑based products. DESCRIPTION
