Feather Disposable Microtome Blades The Feather Autopsy, Trimming and Dissection range is internationally renowned for its sharpness and versatility. Made from stainless steel, each blade is heat treated and finely ground in three stages to produce a precise cutting edge. The blades are then specially coated to minimize friction and maximize blade longevity. A variety of blades are available, each suited to a particular application or tissue type: Feather S35 – A low profile blade for all routine sectioning. Feather R35 – Enables easier ribboning. Ideal for hard fibrous tissue. Feather N35 – Suitable for hard tissue and for thin sectioning. Feather A35 – For routine sectioning of soft and hard tissue. Also suited for thinner sections. Feather S22 – For cutting soft tissue and obtaining extremely thin sections. Ideal for skin, lymph node and renal biopsies. Feather S35L – A longer 120 mm version of the Feather S35 to facilitate the cutting of larger blocks normally on a sledge or sliding microtome. Feather S35LL – A longer 180 mm version of the Feather S35 to facilitate the cutting of very large blocks. A sliding microtome is required to use this blade. Feather C35 – A disposable carbon steel blade ideally suited for sectioning in a cryostat. Able to shear very thin frozen sections. Feather S35 High Profile – Twice the depth of the Feather S35 (requiring a specific High Profile blade holder). Suitable for all routine sectioning. With the exception of the C35 Blade, it is recommended to trim in all Feather microtome blades to improve blade longevity. During trimming‑in of the blade, care must be taken not to damage the surface coating, as this can cause scoring. Available in packs of 50. CODE

Biopsy Pads Biopsy Pads are made from open‑celled foam, which allows fluids to transfer safely and thoroughly around tissue while holding the specimen securely. To prevent floating and avoid artifacts, Biopsy Pads should be presaturated in fixative. The thin design helps eliminate excess pressure from being applied to unfixed specimens, reducing the risk of tissue sticking to the pads or fibers coming apart during embedding. Available in white or blue foam, circular or rectangular. The thinner pads also allow for less fluid carry‑over during processing. CODE

06 – Paraffin

Paraffin Paraplast® Paraplast is recommended for general tissue embedding. It is composed of a refined mixture of highly purified paraffin containing plastic polymers of regulated molecular weights. This supports improved tissue infiltration and superior quality sections with minimal compression. Paraplast gives brittle, difficult to section tissue an innate elasticity, promoting wrinkle‑free sections. It has a melting point of 56° C. Paraplast Plus is suggested for large tissue or tissue that may normally present infiltration issues. Paraplast Plus contains a small percentage of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), allowing accelerated tissue penetration. It has a melting point of 56° C. Paraplast Xtra is recommended for lower temperature infiltration which aids in the prevention of tissue distortion. It is composed of a unique blend of low molecular weight polymers and highly purified paraffins for compression resistance and ribbon continuity. Low viscosity permits complete infiltration of dense tissue. It has a melting point of 52° C.

Chemical Control Airchek® Badges Airchek Badges provide an innovative, simple and effective system to monitor vapour levels. Standard badges are available for formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, xylene, toleune, and isopropanol. The Airchek badges provide continuous sampling for personal monitoring and can give the measurements required under Government regulations. The badges are simply clipped on to the technician’s clothing and a record is kept of name, location and time. One badge will provide continuous sampling over 8 hours and a second badge can be used to supply information to analyse a 15-minute period during peak exposure. Both badges are then sent to Leica Microsystems to be forwarded to an independent accredited laboratory for analysis. The analysis is performed using HPLC giving a formaldehyde sensitivity of 0.004 p.p.m. ± 19% at 2.00 p.p.m Once the results are determined, the laboratory receives a report specifying the exposure per individual technician for the appropriate chemical. It also indicates the results in a format which can be readily compared to the Workplace Exposure Limits. CODE

Decalcifiers Decalcifier System Decalcifier I is a unique decalcifying solution that has the ability to fix and decalcify at the same time. Needle biopsies may be completely fixed and decalcified in one hour or less. Small bone specimens and calcified arteries may be completely fixed and decalcified in approximately 2‑4 hours. It is recommend to use 20 times the volume of the specimen. Following decalcification, the specimen is ready for processing without first having to wash. Tissues decalcified in this solution cut with ease and routine H&E techniques produce excellent stained sections. Larger specimens, 3 to 5 millimeters thick, can immediately be placed in Decalcifier I to fix and initiate decalcification overnight. The following morning, if the specimen is not yet decalcified, transfer it directly to Decalcifier II to complete demineralization that same day. The Surgipath Decalcifier I‑II combination can save valuable time and more importantly, valuable specimens. CODE

Solvents Clearene Clearene is a selected blend of terpenes formulated specifically to replace xylene and toluene in histology and cytology laboratory procedures. It is less oily than other solvent substitutes and therefore dries quickly and does not leave a residue. Clearene penetrates tissue rapidly without overhardening and is safe to use with all open and closed system tissue processors. It is miscible with alcohols, paraffins and mounting media. It contains an antioxidant to prevent stain fading. Clearene is biodegradable and offers the desirable characteristics of a good solvent but not the harmful drawbacks of aromatic hydrocarbons such as xylene and toluene‑based products. CODE

FineFIX FineFIX has been formulated as a formalin‑free, water‑based fixative for conventional and microwave enhanced fixation. This alternative fixative is ideal for routine histological applications and molecular analysis. When diluted with ethanol, its patented formulation of low toxicity additives overcome the drawbacks usually associated with the use of ethanol‑based fixatives. FineFIX provides optimal preservation of tissue antigens, nuclear and cytoplasmic morphology and reduced lysis of red blood cells with preservation of the cytoplasmic membranes. By initiating earlier dehydration and fat extraction during fixation, FineFIX can reduce tissue processing times. Although formalin‑fixed tissues are a huge source of nucleic acids for molecular biological studies, the formation of crosslinkages by formalin makes extraction difficult. Recovery of RNA from tissue fixed in FineFIX has been shown to be greatly superior to that from snap frozen tissue as there is no cross‑linkage formation. The morphology of tissues fixed in FineFIX, processed conventionally or by microwaves, is of such high quality that it poses no difficulty for diagnosis. Shrinkage and vacuolisation are reduced to a fraction of that experienced with traditional ethanol fixation. Pyknotic nuclei are also absent. It is ideal for use with all routine and immunohistochemistry staining techniques and reduces the need for aggressive epitope retrieval. FineFIX provides a real alternative for tissue fixation without all the hazards associated with formalin. The Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) for FineFIX working solution is much higher than Formalin (see table), reducing the risks to laboratory staff from vapour exposure. As an added benefit, FineFIX is delivered as a non‑hazardous water‑based concentrate negating the need for costly hazardous goods transport requirements. FineFix must be diluted with ethanol to form the working solution. CODE
