Chief executive Andrea Pinchen reveals how the club is back out in the community.

The passing of the anniversary of the first phase of lockdown was a sobering moment for us all, especially as, back in March 2020, the predictions were that we would have to endure some hardship but probably only for a brief period.

There were several dates pencilled in for when lives could possibly return to ‘normal’ but none that stood the test of time against such a serious virus.

Now here we are a full year on, still living by measures which restrict social gathering and interaction, though now at least there is a roadmap to potentially come out the other end and resume all of the things we have missed most.

It has not just been the stadium at Mattioli Woods Welford Road that has remained closed for those 12 months, with most of the Tigers’ community activities also suspended.

The club is extremely proud of its place within the game of rugby and within our city, county and region, and not being allowed to go out and engage with people has been especially tough.

Now, however, we have seen the first shoots of Spring in our activities with our community team finally able to go back into schools.

They have been extremely well received too, assisting teachers in providing sessions to get young people active and engaged as they have returned to school after such a long time away from their own social circles.

We have all spent so long in isolation from friends and family that it is wonderful to finally get this far.

These are the first steps for the club in being face to face again with the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and beyond, and we hope they are the first of many in coming weeks and months.

Our community department are able to provide activities and advice for groups of all ages and abilities, and they are very keen to hear from any school or organisation who would like to link up with the Tigers, to share our expertise and resources and, above all, have some fun. We all deserve that after the last 12 months!
