Bristol denied Tigers a fourth John Player Cup win in five years with their 28-22 triumph in the Final at Twickenham. Described as the best Final in the tournament’s history, it also signalled a last appearance for skipper Steve Johnson while serious injury ended the career of wing Tim Barnwell who required surgery to remove a blood clot on the brain after a first-half collision.

On an emotional afternoon, Martin Johnson, Neil Back and head coach John Wells - with more than 1,000 Tigers appearances between them - said a fond farewell to Welford Road after a 45-10 victory over Wasps.
