FROM THE CHAIRMAN Opening words from the chairman of Leicester Tigers… Welcome to matchday. It is great to be able to watch the team in action again, though it is very disappointing that we are not all able to share the occasion at Welford Road yet. Our last home game was the win over Worcester back in February and, although the stadium remains closed to supporters, a huge amount of work has been done behind the scenes and with all of the authorities to allow us to feel confident that we will be able to welcome some of you back as soon as we are given the green light. We all look forward to that day. This has been a tumultuous period and, while it is easy to focus purely on the rugby because that is why we are here, we are well aware that the pandemic has had a major impact on all walks of life and of the horrendous toll it has had on families all over the world. Ahead of kick-off today the teams will pay tribute to the fantastic work of everyone in the NHS, while also taking a moment to remember the lives lost in our communities. We will also use this time to acknowledge supporters who have lost family or friends and to pay our tribute to the past players we have lost since our last home game, including Richard Berry, Dickie Bird, Pete Clements, Dave Forfar, Graham Jackson, Ken Nicholas and Brian Small who totalled around 900 first-team games for the club. While paying tributes to others, I would also like to

thank you all for your continued support on behalf of everyone at the Tigers, particularly those of you who have sent me personal messages of support. This club has overcome many challenges in the past 140 years and I am extremely proud of the players, staff, supporters and sponsors who have played their part in helping us come through this period and face the future with some confidence. It is the strength of relationships with our people that will carry us through and it is good to know you are with us. There have, of course, been big changes since we were last here with Andrea becoming chief executive in May, Geordan moving to director of rugby and the arrival of Steve, Aled and Rob in the coaching team. Welcome to all of the new arrivals - I hope they enjoy many big days here. It was good to see Matt, Zack and Luke make their debuts at

Exeter, despite the result, and also for David Williams who came through the academy a few years ago. We have also seen the departure of a number of players and have had to say goodbye to colleagues as a result of the pandemic’s impact, and I would like to thank them all while wishing them well for the future. FROM THE TOUCHLINE Director of rugby Geordan Murphy gives his view from inside the Tigers camp ahead of the opening home game of the restarted season… Everyone I’ve spoken to in and around the county has been very excited about having rugby back in Leicester after a five-month gap. It’s a real shame we can’t have fans through the gate, but that’s where we are at the minute and we hope working this way will help to keep everyone safe and allow our supporters back in as soon as possible. Playing without a crowd here is a situation we have to adapt to and our preparations have reflected that. This is a first experience of Welford Road matchday for Steve, Aled and Rob since they joined us and I’m sure all of the players are also excited about getting out on home turf, especially as there are some new faces in the squad since we last ran out here back in February. The players have had a long period off playing, probably the longest they’ve had in their careers, and there are a lot of

much-improved areas in the performance. We started the game very, very well and I thought we put them under some good pressure in that period. But we were on the back of a 12-in-a-row penalty count halfway through the first half which saw a big momentum swing and they’re obviously a quality side who can capitalise on that, full credit to them. The guys fought really well and continued to work until the 80th minute, which gives us something to hang our hat on in regards to going forward. There were certainly steps in the right direction and it gave us some learning experiences to take into this week.

Watch at Welford Road

You can be one of the first supporters back at Welford Road and enjoy the closest thing to live rugby as we stream two of our crunch away games in the Premiership Suite. Tigers will show live big-screen coverage of visits to Gloucester and Wasps in the hospitality lounge, where you can enjoy tableserved food, a cash bar and a complimentary drink on arrival. There will also be exclusive matchday content from within the Tigers camp. Tigers go to Gloucester for a 4.30pm kick-off on Sunday, August 30, with doors opening at Welford Road from 2.30pm. The game at Wasps is on Wednesday, September 9 (kick-off 5.30pm) with doors opening here from 3.30pm. Tickets are now available to buy online. See page 37 for details. Social-distancing regulations will apply, with tables sold only to people from the same family group/bubble to a maximum of six supporters per table.

MATCHDAY AGAIN It’s matchday - finally - and although supporters are not permitted in the stadium, you can still get your Tigers fix with our Matchday Live service home and away, social media posts, LTTV interviews, website updates, ROAR newsletter, news and shop eshots, and the matchday programme. ORDER OF PLAY Ahead of kick-off this afternoon, the teams and officials will line up for a period of silence in remembrance of those who have died during the Covid-19 pandemic. We will remember the Tigers past players who have passed away since our last home game, including Richard Berry, David Bird, Pete Clements, Dave Forfar, Graham Jackson, Ken Nicholas and Brian Small. During the silence, which will begin and end on the referee’s whistle, we will also pay tribute to the incredible work done by our NHS and the country’s key workers. Referee Karl Dickson will then blow the whistle for Premiership Rugby to give clubs and players time to show respect for Black Lives and Racial Equality before the game starts. Tigers are proud to support Premiership Rugby’s 'Rugby Against Racism' campaign. Speaking about the competition-wide initiative, Geordan Murphy said: “We are honoured and proud to represent Leicester and each of the many cultures our diverse city is blessed with. “The club does not tolerate any form of racism or prejudice in our sport or our community. This is not a political statement, it is a small gesture which we believe will show that our club and our sport is united against racism.”

COACHING TEAM...

Steve Borthwick HEAD COACH

STEVE ON TIGERS... “The Tigers have such a long and successful history, and are one of the greatest clubs in the game. We must work to build upon that great history, and create our future to get this club to the top of European rugby. It is a brilliant challenge.” A familiar foe from his days as a second row with Bath and Saracens, Steve arrives as head coach intent on restoring the good times at Welford Road. Carlisle-born, Steve played his early rugby at Preston Grasshoppers before joining Bath in 1998. He won the first of 57 England caps in 2001 and had two years as national captain from 2008 under Tigers legend-turned-England-coach Martin Johnson. A Premiership finalist with both Bath - where he also won a European Challenge Cup and Saracens, Borthwick lifted

the trophy at Twickenham in 2011 after victory over Tigers and then launched his coaching career after retirement in 2014. After a successful spell as forwards coach of Japan, including the 2015 World Cup, he spent four-and-a-half years as a key part of the England set-up with Eddie Jones that reached the World Cup Final in 2019. TIGERS ON STEVE... “Steve is among the brightest and most astute young coaches in the game. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience at the very highest level and a clear vision of where he wants to take the team.”

Rob Taylor

ASSISTANT COACH ROB ON TIGERS... “It’s a privilege to get this chance to work with the players at Leicester. I am looking for the opportunities for people to best use their talents to create wins and get the supporters proud of their team.”

Rob joins Tigers to lead the attack after winning four Premiership titles in four seasons in the colts and senior programmes with Sydney University RFC. Born in New Zealand, he is the only coach to have won colts and 1st Grade Premierships in both Auckland and Sydney, after leading teams to six consecutive Grand Finals. He was also the head coach for NSW Country Eagles and then, as director of rugby at Auckland University, he worked closely with World Cup-winning coach Sir Graham Henry and won the Gallaher Shield in 2014, as well as making the final in 2015. TIGERS ON ROB... “Rob’s record at all levels is hugely impressive and we are confident his approach to the game will complement what we have in our coaching ranks.”

Aled Walters

HEAD OF PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE ALED ON TIGERS... “I have massive respect for Tigers. This is not a club I can come into without the expectation to deliver and something I will hold myself accountable to.” As head of physical performance, Aled joins Tigers after playing a prominent role in South Africa’s 2019 Rugby World Cup win. A Welshman, he first moved to Leicestershire to study Physical Education and Sports Science at Loughborough University in 2002, before gaining a Masters degree at Edinburgh.

He then spent four seasons with the Scarlets back in Wales before expanding his horizons as head of strength and conditioning at Taranaki in New Zealand and then as athletic performance coach with the ACT Brumbies in Super Rugby in Australia. In 2012, he joined Munster and had six campaigns there before being recruited to head up the Springboks programme.

Ryan Bower PROP / AGE 29

RYAN ON TIGERS... “There is a lot of experience in the front row, with Tom Youngs, Dan Cole and Ellis Genge, who will push all of us to stay at the highest standard.” Making his Tigers debut as a 19-year-old academy graduate back in 2010, Ryan also played for England at three age levels, including an Under-20s World Championship, and gained senior experience at Nottingham between 2011 and 2013. Initially a tighthead prop, he moved to loosehead and totalled 105 games in six seasons with Worcester Warriors from 2014 before his return to Welford Road. TIGERS ON RYAN... “Ryan understands what being a Leicester player is about and returns to the club after some impressive seasons away from Welford Road.”

Cyle Brink

BACK ROW / AGE 26 CYLE ON TIGERS... “I’ve been told that northern hemisphere rugby is more suited to my game. It is a very direct, hard game which will suit me.” A versatile back-rower who has featured at 6, 7 and 8 in his career, Cyle was part of the Springboks squad in 2018 and moves to Leicester after four seasons in Super Rugby with the Lions and six as a member of the Golden Lions squad in the Currie Cup. He attended the same school as Bryan Habana and Joe van Niekerk, gaining selection for the Springboks Under-20s squad that finished runners-up at the Junior World Championship in

2014, and is known for his powerful work on the ball and in defence. TIGERS ON CYLE... “Cyle has stood out for The Lions in Super Rugby and Currie Cup over recent seasons and adds valuable depth to our stocks.”

Blake Enever LOCK / AGE 28

BLAKE ON TIGERS... “I want to be a part of the group that get Tigers back to where they should be and know that will only come with hard work from everybody.” Blake made more than 50 Super Rugby appearances with the Queensland Reds and ACT Brumbies before heading north this summer.

After a string of consistent performances, he was called up to the national squad and made his Test debut for the Wallabies in 2017 against England at Twickenham. A hard-nosed, physical forward with experience at lock and flanker, in addition to gaining recognition at state level for Queensland Country and Canberra Vikings from 2014, he adds important depth to the pack and experience at the set-piece. TIGERS ON BLAKE... “Blake is a hard-working player, a line-out caller and really physical addition to the scrum who enjoys the hard stuff in attack and defence.”

Zack Henry

FLY-HALF / AGE 25 ZACK ON TIGERS... “I will be working hard to play my part and continuing to learn alongside the worldclass players and coaching team.” Rather than follow the traditional route from academy rugby to the professional game, Zack graduated from Bath University before moving to France. His first club on the continent was Rouen, where he was under the guidance of former Bath and England scrum-half Richard Hill, before he had two seasons with USO Nevers. He emerged as one of Pro D2’s most exciting players and a goal-kicking fly-half capable of playing across the backline.

Another string to Henry's bow is being a silver medallist with Team GB at the World University Sevens Games in 2015. Zack's brother Jake is a professional rugby player in the RFU Championship.

THE BIG MATCH Tigers host Bath Rugby in the first home game since the season’s restart...

Two of the oldest rivals in English rugby, Tigers and Bath, meet for the 200th time this afternoon. The overall record features 115 wins for Tigers and 71 for Bath, with 13 draws. Today’s visitors, though, have won the last three Premiership meetings. There have been several significant moves between the clubs in the professional era with the likes of Lewis Moody, George Ford and Freddie Burns wearing the colours of both teams, while Will Spencer moved to The Rec this summer and, of course, new Tigers head coach Steve Borthwick is a former Bath captain. Tigers scrum-half Ben White said: “Bath are a good side but we’ve had to look at what we do in the week and how we adapt to them and make sure that we’ve practised our game plan throughout the week. “Our focus is on us and how we want to play the game, and to dictate how we make Bath play.” The previous meeting this season went Bath’s way with a 13-10 verdict at The Rec in January when Tom Homer, now back at London Irish, scored twice.

FROM BOTH SIDES As an openside flanker, Julian Salvi had already captained Australia Schools and Under21s when he moved north for a season with Bath, between spells in Super Rugby with the Brumbies. He returned to England in 2011 to join Tigers and became a firm favourite, playing more than 100 times and in two Premiership Finals, before leaving to join Exeter, where he is now a coach.

ELSEWHERE IN ROUND 15 The AJ Bell Stadium hosts the opening action of the weekend with Sharks looking to bounce back from a defeat at Harlequins, which ended their run of three league wins. Sale’s only league defeat at home in the last year was against Gloucester in Round 1 this season. Exeter’s only defeat in the last five rounds was at Harlequins in February. It was also their first loss on the road in any tournament since October 2019. Sale beat Exeter 22-19 at Sandy Park in Round 9 but have never before achieved a Premiership double over the Devon club.

George Skivington walks out at Kingsholm for the first time as head coach, with the former Leicester forward celebrating a 44-15 victory at Worcester last Saturday to end the club’s run of six successive defeats in all competitions. Bristol are enjoying their best-ever Premiership run with six successive wins in the competition. The Bears have won their last two away games, at Northampton and Bath. They have also won their last four meetings with Gloucester, though all matches were played at Ashton Gate.

GALLAGHER PREMIERSHIP TABLE

Wasps were the big winners in Round 14, overcoming Northampton at Franklin’s Gardens to move into fourth place in the table. They have won their last four Gallagher Premiership matches, their best run since 2017, and are chasing three in a row at home for the first time since April 2018. Warriors have slipped to seven successive league defeats and have won just once away from home this season. They have also lost the last 11 meetings with Wasps in the Premiership since March 2013 and have yet to win in six visits to the Ricoh.

The lunchtime kick-off was due to be played at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, but Saracens revert to Allianz Park for the London derby with Quins behind closed doors. Sarries were beaten by Bristol last week and have not lost back-to-back in the Premiership since March 2018. Their only league defeat at the Allianz since February 2018 was against Northampton in Round 1 this season. Harlequins have won only once on the road in the league since March 2019 but did beat Saracens 4114 in Round 9.

After moving out of the Madejski Stadium, Irish appear for the first time at their temporary home at The Stoop as they await completion of a new groundshare project at Brentford FC. Irish, who are due at Welford Road on Wednesday, have lost three in a row in the league, their worst sequence since February 2018. Northampton’s only victory in their last six rounds was at Worcester in March, but they have won on three of their last four visits to The Stoop. Irish beat Saints 20-16 in Round 9 and have never achieved a Premiership double over the Midlanders.

MEET THE OPPOSITION BATH RUGBY Old rivals Bath arrive at Welford Road buoyed by a 34-17 bonus-point win over London Irish at the restart of the Gallagher Premiership season last weekend. It took only four minutes for Bath’s new scrum-half Ben Spencer to open the scoring and hooker Tom Dunn added a double before half-time. England centre Jonathan Joseph scored with a flying finish in the second half and Jack Walker delivered off the back of a driving maul. As we reach Round 15, Bath sit fifth in the Gallagher Premiership table, with their eyes firmly fixed on the top-four battle. Looking back to the start of the season, Bath faced a tough opener against West Country rivals Bristol Bears, who put in a hard-fought second-half performance to win 43-16. A first victory came a week later when a Dunn try sealed a famous 13-10 win over Exeter Chiefs in front of a raucous crowd at The Rec. Mixed performances on the road led to a difficult November, but a return home produced a resolute 22-13 win over Northampton Saints. A trio of tough games followed, with two agonisingly close defeats to Ulster and Harlequins in the Heineken Champions Cup,

and a first home Premiership defeat to a Saracens side bolstered by the return of their World Cup contingent. As 2019 drew to a close, winning form returned with a resounding 38-10 victory at London Irish, followed by a Rhys Priestland kicking masterclass in a win over in-form Sale Sharks. After opening 2020 with defeat at Gloucester, Bath bounced back with a home victory against today’s rivals Leicester Tigers. Back-to-back wins followed - a nail-biting 21-22 verdict over Worcester Warriors at Sixways and a 19-12 triumph over Harlequins - as a confidence boost ahead of a crucial derby against Bristol. Despite Bristol having their backs up against the wall for the majority of the encounter, Stuart Hooper’s men just couldn’t break down a stubborn defence in poor conditions and defeat ensued. Before the season was suspended, a trip to Sandy Park saw Bath punished for early errors as they were beaten 57-20 by Exeter Chiefs. With a determined performance at The Rec getting the Gallagher Premiership season back underway against Irish, today’s visitors will be full of confidence heading to the East Midlands.

The return of rugby to Welford Road is testament to EVERYONE associated with Leicester Tigers. Players, staff, supporters, sponsors. Everyone has gone beyond the call of duty and your support for the Club since the outbreak of this pandemic has been truly humbling, and I simply want to say THANK YOU. Back at the beginning of March, some thought we would be back playing in April or May after a short-term break in the season. But, as things developed and the full impact became apparent, you were called upon to make the decision to either donate, credit or refund your tickets. We respect every decision made regardless of the outcome - now more than ever you must look after yourselves and your families first - and we are grateful for your support in whatever guise. For fans who opted to credit or donate their match ticket fee, again, thank you. You have played your own unique part in steering our great club through this. I do need to mention the 31 members of staff that have left the Club due to the pandemic and restructure, and to also say thank you to them. You will

always be welcome at Welford Road and will always be a part of what we have achieved and will achieve. As we turn to matters on the pitch, I was lucky enough to attend Sandy Park last weekend and see our newlook Tigers take on top-of-thetable Exeter. No one wants to lose, in fact I hate losing more than I enjoy winning (that probably says more about me though!). What was apparent was the effort of the team for the full 80 minutes, with the first and fourth quarters showing we’re heading in the right direction. New faces, a pack mentality and a cheeky drop-goal from Fordy were just a few of the positives for Steve to mull over ahead of today. An empty stadium is a hard thing to get used to. But Chiefs did an excellent job hosting us last week and our Welford Road team are more than ready for a new kind of matchday for us all. Closed doors, temperature checks, PPE, restricted zones and social distancing will all form a new normal at Welford Road for the time being. Season ticket holders will be able to watch today’s game and remaining home games in the 2019/20 season via a BT Sport Match Pass. There are full details on the club website. Rugby is back. Not as we know it, but it is back and we hope that at some point in the not-so-distant future, you will be back at Welford Road too. You’ll be missed, send us your pics of supporting from home via our social channels so we can in some way ‘watch’ the game together. For now, however, we must follow procedures to ensure the safety of us all. We’re ready and raring to welcome you back with all of our risk assessments in place, but the pandemic is still out there, Leicester still has some restrictions in place and the world is still fighting this disease. As Leicester Tigers recorded victory over Worcester Warriors in our last home game back in February, there was another tight tussle on the Welford Road pitch in the Ultimate Big Boot. Young players from East Bergholt High School in Essex faced a group from London Porterhouse in testing conditions, and there was nothing to separate the two teams after 10 balls flung high into the Leicester sky as both made three catches. But, in front of more than 18,000 supporters, the contest went to a nerve-wracking three rounds of sudden death before Luke Scott claimed the final catch laying on the Tigers turf to seal victory for the Colchester school. “I could see the ball coming towards me and I thought ‘I’ve just got to catch this’,” Luke said. “The nerves must have got to me because my legs buckled and I fell on to my back, but I still managed to catch it! “What an amazing feeling. And it feels even nicer to do it and get the £100 for the boys. This is definitely the highlight of our season. Especially for me!” The Ultimate Big Boot is sponsored by De Montfort University and pits teams against each other on matchday for a £100 prize. Any team that can claim all 10 balls will scoop the £2,000 jackpot. Ben McCartney was part of the London Porterhouse group and, despite the tense finish, told LeicesterTigers.com how his team had ‘a brilliant time’. “Some of these guys have done it before, but I hadn’t,” he said. “I’m a football guy at heart, but thought I’d give it a go. “We’d seen the young lads get three first-up and thought we might be in with a chance. But this wind makes it much harder than it looks. “The whole experience seems to go so quickly, but we’ve had a brilliant time.”

CHA R I T Y

The last six months have been a tough time for all charities, with most of them missing out on their major fundraising events and opportunities as a direct result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Leicester Tigers Foundation is no different. Each year we rely heavily on the great support of the Tigers Family with funds generated over key weekends in the calendar and at numerous community activities and events. These funds enable the Foundation team to support local groups and individuals, some with the greatest of needs, across the Tigers region. Hardest hit have been the events targeted to raise funds to support those living with disabilities who otherwise would not get the opportunity to participate. Each year the Foundation needs to raise at least £50,000 to continue its work in delivering Disability Sports and raising awareness for those living with disability. This includes our outstanding Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Schools (SEND) outreach programme which sees Tigers coaches working in and supporting the SEND schools in Leicestershire and Rutland, as well as providing vital support to the inspirational Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby Club. Both of these core activities allow Tigers coaches and staff to work with partners to ensure those living with great challenges still have an opportunity to participate and enjoy the positive benefits of sport and physical activity. Scott Clarke, head of community and global partnerships at Leicester Tigers, said: “It’s a key focus of the Leicester Tigers Foundation to support individuals and groups who may otherwise miss out on opportunities to participate and enjoy the day-to-day mental, social and physical benefits that sport can offer.

“The Tigers Foundation’s priority is to ensure we focus on the ability of the individual at all times, to support them in maximising those benefits and it’s key for us to continue to resource this support. “Unfortunately, lockdown couldn’t have arrived at a worse time for our fundraising plans with most of our events targeting big community activities from spring through the summer. The cancellation of those events has meant the Foundation is about £80,000 short of where we need to be - £50,000 of which is key for the next 12 months’ operations.

COMMUNITY TEAM SUPPORTING TIGERS’ COMMUNITY PROGRAMME

BROOKSBY MELTON COLLEGE There’s still time to join the ground-breaking rugby programme at Brooksby Melton College, delivered in partnership with Leicester Tigers. This academic year will see a newly commissioned first-team pitch come into use, along with three further rugby pitches which are soon to be completed, and refurbished accommodation blocks for those looking to immerse themselves in the full college experience. With these improvements, the partnership with Tigers continues to go from strength to strength. BMC is now part of the SMB Group of colleges and is also Tigers’ key partner for the Academic, Colleges and Education (ACE) Scheme. This is a nationwide programme which feaures 14 Further Education College-based set-ups paired with a professional club and pitted against one another in a hotly-contested development tournament. While developing their rugby abilities under Tigers coaches with 8-10 hours of training per week, young players can also complete a BTEC Level 3 and Extended Diploma in a subject of their choice. Sport and Sport Science may be the usual choice, though the special arrangements at the college in Melton Mowbray enable some participants to study Agriculture and Countryside Management and still benefit from the bespoke Tigers environment. Although all has been quiet for a few months at BMC, like other schools or colleges during the lockdown period, the preparations for the upcoming academic year have not stopped.

The college is now gearing up to deliver a fully interactive education offer across all subjects, protecting the quality and safety of its students and staff despite the impact of Covid-19. The new first-team pitch and additional three new rugby pitches will allow the Brooksby campus to move forward as one of the best rugby facilities in the region, allowing BMC and Tigers to develop the wider sports education offer to Further and Higher Education students alike. On the rugby side, although there have been changes enforced by current circumstances, they are now at ‘Stage C’ under the RFU’s Coronavirus protocols, and the Tigers team are keen to ensure all students continue to benefit from the best coaching and development they can, with a focus on skill and physical development. Pre-season sessions have already started as the young players work their way back towards contact-based rugby, though it’s not too late to sign up for the next academic year. MATT HAMPSON FOUNDATION Update from one of the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s official charities...

GET BUSY LIVING

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, the work of the Matt Hampson Foundation has become even more essential in supporting both the physical and mental health of our beneficiaries. Having taken the early decision to temporarily close the Get Busy Living Centre to protect Matt and its regular users, the focus shifted to finding creative solutions to the provision of remote support. The Foundation delivered essential rehab kits and gym equipment to the homes of beneficiaries, launched a new App, posted workout sessions on Youtube and provided live one-to-one physio and PT sessions. It was great to see the community spirit created at the Centre continuing remotely to bring people together even when they were apart. Everyone supported each other and continue to do so. It has been wonderful to get our beneficiaries back on site during the last couple of weeks, as we have been able to offer outdoor personal training sessions and physiotherapy. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no doubt that there will be many challenges to face over the coming months, especially as all our fundraising events have been cancelled, so if you would like to support us email info@hambo.co.uk

Tigers were denied by a Saracens fightback at Allianz Park in the last quarter of the final game before the five-month Coronavirus lockdown. A converted try by Alex Lewington put Sarries in front but two kicks from Tom Hardwick - a replacement for the injured Johnny McPhillips in the opening 10 minutes - made it 7-6 at the interval. The second half began with Tigers tested in defence, where Nephi Leatigaga and Sione Kalamafoni proved valuable over the ball and Harry Wells stole lineout possession before the visitors took the lead with Ben White’s try. The attack began on the centre-spot with Joe Heyes popping ball for Will Spencer to carry and, when White arrived in support, the scrum-half sprinted to the line. Hardwick’s kick made it 13-7 in Tigers’ favour. Manu Vunipola chipped three points off the lead and, after Telusa Veainu was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on, Dom Morris scored for Sarries and the conversion made it 17-13 on 62 minutes. Tigers remained pinned back as Veainu returned, and wing Lewington wriggled free to score for a second time, though Sarries were denied a bonus point when Ali Crossdale had a late ‘score’ ruled out for a knock-on.

Tigers returned empty-handed from the opening game of the season’s restart, as Exeter Chiefs claimed four tries in a 25-minute period either side of half-time to take a bonus-point win. The visitors started and finished the game strongly, though, taking a six-point lead after some good early pressure as George Ford landed a 40-metre penalty and then a well-taken drop-goal while the forwards competed strongly at the breakdown. But Chiefs claimed the opening try when Dave Ewers provided the final push over the line from close-range pressure, before a sweeping move added a second for full-back Stuart Hogg to lead 12-6 at halftime. Luke Cowan-Dickie added an opportunist score at the start of the second half from a tap penalty and Chiefs secured the bonus point with a penalty try at an attacking maul, which also brought a yellow card for Jordan Taufua as they led 26-6. Tigers, though, were rewarded with an identical score soon afterwards as Harry Wells set up a lineout drive and this time Chiefs lock Jonny Hill went to the sin bin. The game ended with David Williams almost finding a gap on the right wing and Tigers in possession 20 metres out, but the league leaders kept them out to wrap up the win.
