EDUCATION OFFICER SHAKEELA ISLAM Employability What is your degree worth to you? Is it the £27,000 you’re paying for? Stressed about your post-Uni prospects? You’re not alone. Too many students overcome mental fatigue, months of exam anxiety and Shabangovers, leaving University unable to compete with apprentices gaining relevant experience. Many people want that extra something that completes their CV. I will promote collaborations with local businesses enabling students the opportunity to experience and network in a professional establishment. If elected, your employability will be my priority. Accessibility Wouldn’t it be easier for all critical information to be found in one place? Sick of opening ten tabs just to compare modules? Vote for me and I will lobby to centralise all critical information you need to make important decisions at university. Increasing awareness for the facilities provided by the university; the careers service should no longer be a ghost department in the Charles Wilson building for all you future graduates. Education What’s the point of assigning personal tutors? Most students have little contact time with their personal tutors, becoming a mere formality forgotten about after the introductory week. If elected, students will see more valuable and helpful interactions with their personal tutor.

MARCO SOLDO

Hello, I am Marco Soldo and I am a 2nd year Human Resource Management student! I am a distance learner, and I am already a BSc HRM SSLC Student Representative. All of students, on-campus and distance learning students need to treated equally. No distinction! The Year in Industry scheme should be available for each undergraduate student in good academic standing. Brexit is a consequence that should not affect international students! Funds equally distributed among academic staff. No more useless strikes! University of Leicester must be a student driven institution by ensuring their total satisfaction throughout the academic year. Democratic values, individualist culture and equality of opportunity to better share students' view. Linkedin profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marco-soldo-33aa03128/

ADNAN RAHMAN 'Hi! My name is Adnan, I am a third year Politics and International Relations student. I am standing to be your Education Officer because I believe our educational experience can be better, it can be more representative and we can ensure that it involves everyone in our democracy, especially the most marginalised. Marketisation is eating away at higher education with an increase in fees & the cost of living, our lecturers seeing their pay stagnate and our departments & mental health services being starved of resources, all whilst our vice chancellors see a healthy rise in their six figure salaries. Below is a brief overview of what I am standing for: Reforming the personal tutor system and culturally competent mental health services Work together with student reps to decolonise our curriculum(s) Support international and low income students Revamp and enhance student representation From prioritising mental health in education, decolonising the curriculum and supporting international & low income students to enhancing and equipping our student reps, I believe we can push for a re-imagined university experience without any barriers to participation. For a transformative and empowering education back #Ad4Ed!

PRESIDENT ELSIE WHITE Our university system is in control of people that value profit over education, vote Elsie for president to Reclaim your university, reclaim your union and reclaim your space.

I will pledge to: Pay Part time officers for their work- Labour of minority groups must be valued if we’re to truly decolonise our university. Hold the university leadership team accountable - I will press the University leadership team for greater transparency and student representation. Pledge to pay the living wage on campus- If our university can afford extortionate VC salary they can afford a fair salary for workers. Decolonising our curriculum through addressing power balances continue to work towards creating a classroom where honest dialogue can be had. Support for student workers- Improve access to unions on campus. Students that work are often exploited without knowing it. Why trust me? I have a history of standing up to management, I lead the student involvement in strike action in second year, and have experience of successfully negotiating with the senior leadership team. I am passionate about liberation, I am co-chair of the feminist society, an ELC and have been campaigning for justice for the Stanstead 15.

BECCA HULL I’m Becca, your current Postgraduate Officer, and I am running to be your President! If I am elected as your Union President, I will focus on 5 key areas. Here are just a few examples of the way I will transform your experience at the University of Leicester: Your Wellbeing Implement wellbeing ambassadors and a designated ‘safe space’ on O2 nights out - for those who are concerned about sexual harassment, need advice, or some quiet time away from the crowds. Your Education A more transparent and university-wide mitigating circumstances system that puts your wellbeing at the forefront of the process – no more hidden form requirements or added stress. Equality and Liberation Facilitate the Students’ Union to provide full inclusivity training for all SU staff – working in collaboration with the LGBT, Trans, Equality and Liberation and BAME Officers. Your Future More part-time jobs available in the University and Students’ Union – particularly admin jobs to get valuable practical office experience within academic departments. Your Union Increased community outreach – set up a permanent collection box for bedding, blankets and essentials in the SU and Halls of Residence for local homeless shelters and charities. Find me on Facebook: @Becca4President

OGE OBIOHA As your current Union Wellbeing Officer I have done a lot in my role to support students and their wellbeing, and now I want to support students through all aspects of their university life. As your Wellbeing Officer I have: Started mid-term destress Launched the safety campaign, with research into student safety Implemented a £1 safety bus for late nights on campus Advocated for mental health funding Led Hanukkah with Jewish Society Supported Equality & Liberation Champions Delivered Rent Right campaign AND MUCH MORE! As your Union President I will: Diversify food on campus, lobbying for cheaper options. Continue to lobby for students to eat in the library. Offer more non-alcoholic SU events. Represent the student voice to the local council, ensuring SU inclusion in the wider Leicester City community. Represent students on a national level, championing the SU’s stance on free education. Work to tackle the mental health crisis, identifying how best to support students. Work to eradicate the BME attainment gap. Zero tolerance stance on anti-Semitism and islamophobia on campus. Campaign against sexual violence and harassment. Champion the voices of marginalised groups such as mature and postgraduate students, LGBT+ students, students with disabilities and distance learner students

IMAN SHALLAL

I am a hardworking, passionate and approachable individual who has the dream of tackling big and small issues, not just locally or nationally but, globally. I am currently a second year BSc Economics student, running to be the SU president for 2019/2020. I began as the Democratic Procedures Representative in my first academic year, 2017/2018. I am currently the Students' Union Ambassador, Peer Mentor and a Scrutiny Panel member. Hence, I have obtained a great understanding of the SU structures and how it functions. I also have a strong base of networks and relationships with the SU staff. Being the Scrutiny Panel member allowed me to assess the manifesto points of the executive officers, including the president, and track their progress. Amy, who has been the SU president for the last 2 years has done very well. I plan to improve upon some of her great achievements and continue upon some of her unfinished projects like the Working Class at Leicester Campaign. Also, there are new projects that I believe can be carried out that will cater students' needs and wants. I am here to hear you and work with you to make the changes. Many thanks, Iman

JACK TERRY Some of you may remember me from last year’s election, but now I’m back, and this time I have policies. For example: Amend the SU constitution to make the presidency a hereditary position which shall be held for life. I will have no children so that a war of succession is triggered upon my death. Close the university’s borders and surround campus with a large barbed wire fence. Nobody will gain access to campus unless they can tell an entirely original joke. Erect a large statue of myself in front of the physics department. Replace the library with a waxwork museum where all the waxworks are myself. Employ privateers to hunt down the pirates threatening our shipping. Employ a team of zookeepers to investigate reports of an escaped gorilla. The extension to the Percy Gee building will house a menagerie. I will stand on the roof of the SU every morning and watch a parade of all current students. All student’s grades will be totalled and then divided equally, so everybody gets the same grade. The colour green will be banned. Restore the old manifesto format – I can’t fit enough stupid stuff in 200 words.

KING KONG Hi my name is King Kong and I am running for CHAMPION. The main issue that we are facing on campus is NO FREE BANANAS. I will fix this. Also, I will fix everything else when I am champion.

My polices: I am a gorilla so I am good at fighting so I should be champion In future, the champion should not be chosen in a electron. They should fight the current champion to the death on Mortal Combat. All dispute will be resolved by fighting to DEATH in The Pit. Change the word 'manifesto' to 'personfesto'. Free bananas. Sign a deal with Eddy Haarn and Matchroom boxing to show any fights on campus. The o2 will become the gladiator arena. Every varsity match will become a fight. Hunger games style entrance examination to select students. When I am elected as the champion I will climb up to the top of the Attenborough tower and fight some planes.

ACTIVITIES OFFICER CHLOE BROWN There are four sections that I would like to work on as Activities Officer:

Environmental Strategy and Sustainability Support environment and sustainability groups Support the Community Fridge project and ensure that all surplus food is donated to homeless charities Continue to improve the vegetarian, vegan and dietary options available across campus Increase the provision of recycling bins & improve signage Student Groups Bring more transparency to the role of Activities Officer More support for Committees (& Committee Members), including adding additional sections to the Committee Hub Work with the Equality & Liberation and the Wellbeing Officers to improve diversity and inclusion in student groups Celebrate National, Cultural, and Faith groups through 'The World Fair' Volunteering Continue to promote volunteering opportunities Increase range & diversity of opportunities available Create guides for the Accreditation Scheme, volunteering hours, and HEAR Redevelopment Support the development of new food outlets to suit the demographic of students Create a plan for moving Student Groups back into the SU to make the most out of the new space, and support them with regards to storage space and room bookings Support the implementation of a pub on campus to promote a welcoming space for students to socialise in

HAMZA REHMAN Hi guys! My name is Hamza and I am a third year Politics and International Relations student. I want to stand as your Activities Officer because I passionately believe that every student society should be recognised and supported for their immense hard work. Unfortunately, student groups often feel disengaged with the Student Union and have little accessible routes of communications which not only hinders their progress, but it also alienates new and smaller societies who need support. I will tackle this bureaucracy by bridging a gap between the Student Union and Societies so that every student group has the reassurance that their voices will be recognised, and their concerns tackled. Below is a brief overview of what I am standing for: Revamping booking forms so student groups can focus on their events as oppose to the paperwork. Establishing Online Forums. More inclusive student groups and socials. Advocating environmental and sustainable lifestyle choices. Recognising the hard-work of every society through end of month awards as well as easier access to employability routes. Creating a bigger activities funds. I will ensure that the Student Union is less bureaucratic and accessible for all. ACT WITH HAMZA and let’s make a change!

BILAAL TAKOLIYA Societies Boost inter-society networking via: World Week and Faith Week campaigns to foster intercultural and interfaith understanding Creating Facebook groups for societies with similar agendas Ensure your needs are considered by: Ensuring accessible spaces for international students, mature students and faith societies in campus renovations. Promote the growth and facilitation of society activities via: Handover and event-planning training Once-per-semester feedback sessions where you tell us what we can do better and how to adapt our policy to make things easier for you Relaxed society food regulations Careers Expand career prospects of students on campus by: Diversifying employers attending Careers Week Developing Careers Service to offer more specific coaching for your field Widening opportunities offered by your department for placements, internships and graduate jobs Promote volunteering involvement and recognition by: Establishing rewards for volunteering Connecting you to local volunteering opportunities Sustainability Increase sustainability on campus by: Working towards a Passivhaus rating for the Charles Wilson renovation Lobbying the university to provide more bursaries for students in financial difficulty Creating collection facilities for electronic waste Setting water footprint & food miles quotas for food sold on campus Widening participation in the working group that make sustainability recommendations to influence university policy

SAM WHARVELL My name is Sam Wharvell. I am currently studying for a MSc in Biological Chemistry and I am running for activities officer. I am a hardworking, very organised person who just wants to help people in anyway I can. I have been on 3 different committees, as well as 2 team Leicester sports teams, and been a key part of organising several successful events including ones with multiple societies. I have a drive to make sure as many students enjoy university to the fullest and I feel I can do this by working with societies to improve everyone’s experience. I want to create a sense of community between societies and work on communication between the SU and Societies. Continue working to help societies through the redevelopment of the SU Work to make the SU more sustainable by reducing food waste and the use of non-renewable resources. I really care for the students, the SU and the University and hope to make a difference.

TOBY MEADOWS

Helping Students Safe Space in the O2 Increase the sexual harassment policy in the O2 and bars in town Hold an Octoberfest event and other cultural events to celebrate unity A new Saturday night event bisemesterly in the theme of 70s Competition on the Halloween Fancy dress Bar Crawl Give a voice to the students on how we want nights out to be run! Helping Societies Institute a 2 day email reply policy, have a response sent by 2 days so that no one falls through the cracks Rule out paper voting across the board Increase the knowledge about room changes and alert societies of changes with more time Continue to give support to societies especially through their second year Helping the environment Reduce the use of paper tickets at rock star events and recycle the waste of current tickets Increase the number of recycled VKs at O2 events Reduce waste of food by send excess food to the local food bank

WELLBEING OFFICER SANA ALI My name is Sana; I’m a 3rd year Psychology student and I’m running to be your Wellbeing Officer, because every student deserves to feel safe and supported at University and there is so much more the Union and University can do to ensure this. If elected as Wellbeing Officer, I will: Reform the counselling services by hiring qualified CBT therapists Destigmatise mental health through campaigns and talks, particularly in liberation groups and men Make mitigating circumstances more mental health conscious Create pamphlets detailing how to help if someone has a panic attack Start a campus-wide body positivity campaign Implement mandatory consent workshops to combat sexual harassment and rape Rally for more lighting in surrounding areas of University, such as New Walk and Victoria Park More sexual health support, particularly for LGBT+ people Housing support through cut the rent protests, house-hunting advice and housemate finder events I have experience working with both the Union as an Equality Liberation Champion for my department, as well as Publicity Officer for Amnesty International Society and with the University as a member of the Race Equality Action Group. From this, I have developed the confidence, event-planning and organisational skills required to make positive, impactful change.

EMILY BENNETT

I will bring awareness of support structures into induction lectures at the start of each term and give new students a Wellbeing pack on collecting their ID. I will implement a "kindness first" attitude in mitigating circumstances, where the health of the student is put first. I will introduce a "safeguarding procedure" to help students struggling with the transition to university. This would be an opt-in service with regular check in emails and if any concerns are raised, Residential Advisers would be sent to check on the student. I will introduce and increase drop-in sessions for everything from drugs and alcohol to homesickness, as well as ensuring general relaxation spaces as part of the redevelopment. I will implement more practical Wellbeing training workshops for students on a more regular basis, and provide continued support to society Wellbeing and Inclusion Ambassadors. I would look to extend the number of sessions offered by Union Counselling as changing therapies can impact already vulnerable students' wellbeing. I will see gender neutral toilets installed across campus. I will provide greater aid for disadvantaged students, with signposting to institutions that offer positions to people with little or no work experience. Find my full manifesto here: https://fb.me/Emily4Wellbeing

JAY CAVANAGH I have worked tirelessly as your LGBT+ Officer across this year, learning the processes of the Union and working proactively with the various members of staff that I need to have solid relationships with to deliver on my manifesto points. I can offer an intersectional, committed and well-planned approach. Vote Jay for Wellbeing if you agree we need the following: An on-campus Psychologist working with and supporting the counselling service A mass sexual assault campaign and mandatory consent and sexual assault workshops during matriculation The adoption of 'Ask Angela’ as an official and recognised system of sexual assault prevention at the O2; To support our welfare societies and society wellbeing officers Removal of the six sessions cap on the counselling service, which is turning people away and dropping people from the service unnecessarily A review of the Attendance Monitoring System to stop it being used to harass students unnecessarily Drug testing kits readily available to promote safe drug use and as a preventative measure for spiking A cross-Midlands Mental Health Conference to tackle mental health, what we’re doing, what we’re not, why, and what resources are available goingforward, attempting to find a solid solution. #JWELL2019

FADWA QADAN

I always found it important to assure the well-being of all individuals in society. From young age, it always stood out to me to be good to other people and make sure that they are always satisfied, even if it meant that I would have to lower myself for their happiness. I prioritize the people. It has been a dream of mine to always be able to help all people, in every way I can, because there is no way I'd ever let anyone ever go through any difficult times, because I've been in these positions. There is no human being I'd ever want to see fall apart or feel like they couldn't be safe, whether on campus or off campus. I love to hear people out and I can definitely promise to always provide those in need of support my 100% attention, and to always be honest in the support given and purely from my heart. I care about everyone, because we are all human. We all deserve to be happy and to be able to live in this world knowing that there's nothing that should ever bring us down. Nobody should ever feel alone in any situation.

EQUALITY AND

LIBERATION OFFICER

TONY MAGAIA My experience: Welfare Officer for the LGBT+ Society (previously BAME and Social Secretary) Student Ambassador for the Biological Sciences Department Social Secretary for Street Dance Society; Equality and Liberation Champion; Member of Leicester Citizens Peer Mentor I intend to celebrate diversity within the university. The intersectionality of this role must be explored in order to represent for every student. I want to empower all liberation groups not limited to Women, BAME, LGBT+, and Disabled students as well as people of faith to thrive, providing them the tools to doing so, and aiding at every step, increasing their inclusivity in academia as well. I plan on tackling any form of hate crime and harassment, as this should never go unnoticed Be the voice for less represented students such as postgraduate, parent/carer, commuters, part-time and aid with their issues Provide more support for international students Raise awareness of mental and sexual health in liberation groups, as well as signposting of services!

SANDRA TETTEH My name is Sandra and I am a 3rd year BA International Relations Student. I currently sit as the BAME Officer for the University of Leicester Student Union. And I am running for the position of the first ever Equality and Liberation Officer. My BAME Officer position highlighted the need for an extension of my role which would be a full-time position. I am running because I believe that the university has a long way to go in ensuring that the student experience is the best value for money one can get. Now what am I running for? International Students - Better integration into University life. BAME Students #ReadatLeicester BAME Speakers Networking Events Better equipping students for world of work Ensuring that all liberation groups are equally celebrated. Student Involvement in University Encourage opening of opportunities within the establishment to penultimate years Careers Extend the Leicester Award to alumni and work with the Careers Team Previous Experience: BAME Officer 2018/19. Ghanaian Society Secretary 2017/18. Union Council Member. Peer Mentor 2018/2019. Society Member – Leicester University Voices. Delegate – NUS Black Students Conference March 2018 and November 2018. Higher Education Conference Summer 2018 – University of Leicester Delegate

LEONIE WILLIAMS My experience: My name is Leonie but you can call me LEO I’m running for Equality and Liberation Officer because these principles grow deep within me. I have so far demonstrated this by co-founding the West Indian Society which was due to feeling as though we needed to raise awareness for all the West Indian islands as well as the culture that stands behind them. One of my main aims is to give more exposure to events that honour minorities such as Black History Month and International Women’s Day. In terms of planning events, I want to collaborate with a range of societies and other universities, meanwhile ensuring that a selection of these events are made accessible to Oadby residents. Being discriminated against is something that most people have/are suffering from and not being able to liberate yourself freely is an ideology that I can’t believe takes place to this day. Therefore, I want to hold focus groups that students can have amongst each other which can range from, islamophobia too homophobia to ableism to racism to sexism to discrimination against gender reassignment. I want every minority to be accounted for.

MOHAMED FATHY GHARIB KOHLA I am Mohamed, 2019 MSc. Management Course Rep winner with accomplished role key records. I am doing the second major now (First was MBA with honour, Leicester University 2017). Former three successive years student union president in Egypt. Throughout my entire personal and academic life, I gained sufficient experience in raising, handling and solving issues dedicated to peers well-being and Human Rights. Regarding this role, it is imperative for everyone to gain he/she own rights under only one reason that is 'Human Nature', as an E & L officer this is the time to support and encourage people to elaborate, stand, open their mindsets and hearts to the others at first whatever your gender, ethnicity, and even with no identification. LGBT+, women and disabled should recognise their privilege, should be well listened for and communicated. In my country, I have been attacked for defending those 'privileged humans'. I can make a change, speak to raise the voices of our peers, encourage the talk instead of silence, introduce LGBT role models to participate in every aspect of our life, halt the anti-LGBT legislation, fight the bullying, support the Equality Act upon illegalising discrimination. Exhibitions, conferences, roundtable discussions, and public talk are crucial and I professional in doing so.

SULEIMAN SULEIMAN It is okay not to be ‘Normal’; It is not real, what is real though is different human beings with different complex experiences which makes us the same. There is no need for anyone to feel alone. The world would be so much better if we no longer focused on trivialities and were more inclined to what makes us human, what makes us the same. I intend to represent the groups who feel their experiences are not understood, to create a bridge between all the unnecessary gaps that society has created. Love Liberates Five goals I intend to achieve; 1. Art around campus Beautify campus with modern art contributed by students Concepts and ideas provided by students 2. Talent and empowerment scheme Cultivating students talents (Music, visual art, producing, cooking e.t.c) Using your talents to gain financial independence 3. Minority empowerment Ensuring specific mental health assessment relating to each group New ways of communicating stories that have impacted change 4. Abuse and international support/advice (Family issues, LGBTQ, traumatic experiences, Anxiety and depression) Therapy and consultation for abuse victims Panels to discuss experiences and success stories 5. Community/Cultural weeks across session Ensures students are taught about multiple cultures Each culture presents food, attire, articles and events

STUART TALIESIN OWAIN HUGHES Do not put the word equality in the title of this position if it is not equal and open to EVERYONE.

SPORTS OFFICER MIA NEMBHARD Hi, I’m running to be your next Sports Officer. I’m currently club captain of the largest club on campus (Netball). My goal is to push for as much inclusion and access to sport as possible. As part of the current SU’s Sport Council, I’ve carried out my own projects and worked directly with Sport and Active Life. Most recently, I’ve held focus groups on diversity in sport on campus. I’ll use this feedback to provision sport programmes and facilities for a wide range of students including those that have not felt prioritised. Sport isn’t solely recreational but contributes greatly to mental and physical health. So regardless if you compete nationally or do a ‘Let’s Do Leicester’ session once a month, I’m passionate about reducing barriers to sport. My manifesto focusses around these areas: Culture, Facilities, Participation and Access. Initiatives targeting gym membership, women’s only training areas, transforming the campus gym, free sport sessions, free transport to training and much more. I’ve gained specific experience within the department and received awards including Sports Personality OTY 2018. I want to modernise the way we use and see university sport and am confident I would be able to deliver as your Sports Officer.
