Centennial’s team of powerlifters – Wayne Knock, Ron Simeon and Stephen Exil – swept the 3rd Annual College/ University Open hosted by Seneca College on Feb. 8th. The team won first place on the podium and won all three awards (best bench press, squat, and deadlift) in their session.

PARDIS GRAS The CCSAI brought the heat in the middle of a cold winter. Students were welcomed to the Main Events Hall at the Progress Student Centre for a night of fun and celebration.

P

ardis Gras was a big success. Students filled the Student Centre at Progress Campus to celebrate with a Mardis Gras-style party. Dj’s pumped up the crowd with a mix of top-40, hip hop, pop, Bhangra and much more. There were lots of prizes for students including iPads and tickets. The prizes went to students who managed to collect the most beads. Before you get too offended, the beads were given away at random and shared among friends. There was nothing inappropriate done to win. More pictures can be found on the CCSAI Facebook.

he CCSAI held two casino nights this semester. The first on Feb. 3 at Morningside Campus and the second March 18 at the Progress Student Centre. Students were invited to play a variety of casino games at various tables for chips that could be redeemed for tickets, that would win them prizes including an iPad, Raptors and Maple Leafs tickets, movie tickets and other smaller items. Some of the lucky Raptors ticket winners include Janvi Thaker, Amandeer Kaur and Natasha O’Neil. Ben Emery was the lucky student who received tickets to see the Toronto Maple Leafs. He traveled all the way from the Story Arts Campus to participate in the event and had a blast. Look for more great events coming up throughout the Summer and when you return in September. Interview-ready makeup tips Fourth-semester Graphic Design student By: Leigh Cavanaugh

W

ith the end of the semester in sight, many of us have begun to plan our summers - where we’re going to go, who we’re going to see and when. But for those who are gearing up for a summer of work or even interning, those first few moments of interaction can be critical in gaining the position you want. It’s important to ensure you are appropriately presented.

APPLICATION

1

Here are some general tips to help you out with your interviewready look:

1

2

3

Be natural with colour choices (unless the environment of the job displays otherwise). Employers want to see you (and your personality), not to be distracted by appearances. An excessive amount of makeup can lead to the misconception of high maintenance.

2

Follow the natural shape of your eyes and face. Don’t just try to create something you saw on a celebrity or another person. Most of the time it will look different. Use your natural features to enhance your choices.

3

This tidbit is more for those who don’t wear makeup: take a chance and try it. Makeup is a visual expression and part of first impressions. Even a small amount can go a long way.

Graphics courtesy// Leigh Cavanaugh

pg 15

Does your makeup fit your outfit? You may have an everyday look that you feel suits the place you are being interviewed at, but does it also fit that fancy, business outfit you found at the back of your closet? The best way to look most natural is to have everything harmonized. Does your makeup fit the job environment? Honestly, use your discretion. Be cognizant of where you are, but also try to inject your personality into the look you are going for. Employers like this, and it can also help you stand out. Does your makeup fit the audience? It’s not enough to just know a little bit about the company you are applying at, it’s also worth knowing who may be interviewing you. Look up the company, does anyone have LinkedIn, is it possible to get a face-to-face with the hiring committee or potential coworkers beforehand? All of this will help inform you of how you should dress and present yourself. Also good to keep in mind: when in doubt, just ask.

Sound Body, Sound Mind AWC Wellness Coach By: Dylan Wong

T

his is the last stretch of the school year, where all your focus goes into studying and succeeding in your exams. This is a time where your schedule will be full trying to catch up on missed classes and studying. It might be to the point where you may not have time for to take care of yourself. Many people may think that nutrition and exercise can be put on hold during the last couple of week of exams because it is not as important as passing your exams and getting your dream job. Coming from experience, I can definitely say that it should not be something to avoid during exams. When speaking of nutrition during exams, many people either stress eat or do not eat at all. This is very important to consider because it can go two ways. Not eating will deprive you of nutrients and energy therefore takes away from your focus and your ability to retain what you are trying to memorize. While on the other end, eating junk food such as pizza, and fast foods will leave you feeling sluggish and will also affect how you study in a negative way.

SUGGESTIONS This is why I suggest you take 15-minute breaks in between study sessions to get a healthy and nutritious meal or snack to give your body and especially your brain some energy to function. This will allow you to retain information more efficiently instead of forgetting what you are reading ten minutes later and having to do it again.

EXERCISE As for exercise, another very important factor in maintaining health, I suggest doing any form of exercise even if it is just stretching. Try to take 5-minute breaks to stretch out any stiff muscles especially the neck and back, which tend to be very stiff from sitting in a chair for prolonged amounts of time. This will allow good circulation and relieve stress by releasing feel good hormones and will greatly give you positive results. These little breaks may be the defining factors that will help you maintain good health while feeling comfortable during exam times.

N

ow that the school semester is winding down, students are finally able to focus on things other than school... like hobbies, remember those? For any who enjoy creating stories, here are some tips on how to get ahead. And while there is no easy Band-aid solution, author Richard Scarsbrook has some useful advice to share.

1

3 - Revise with others: While it may be stressful to share work that is near and dear, getting a beta reader can make all the difference. Have others (who you trust) read it. Getting distance from the piece also helps greatly to catch things the writer glosses over.

Here’s a scary fact: writing is 10 per cent creation and 90 per cent revision. Try reading your piece out loud or getting distance by not looking at it for a week. This helps to catch mistakes you have overlooked, and maybe you’ll see it in a new light.

1 - Just do it!: A lot of first-time writers have issues even getting to the stage where something is publishable. Scarbsbrook’s first tip is to just get it done, no matter what. Get the first draft out and let the polishing come later. NaNoWriMo is a great tool for this. A good tip to realize when it comes to revising, is to ensure you focus on one aspect of your story per pass-through. So instead of trying to edit grammar, plot, character development all at once, do a read through that focuses solely on spelling, then another on character. This way you can spot errors accurately.

4 2

2 - Revise - by yourself: Probably the most arduous task in the process, but it’s just as crucial as anything else. When you feel you can’t revise anymore, do it again and then again - just to be safe. pg 17

4 - Get published: Obviously this is easier said than done, but for many who don’t bother to even try to put their work out there nothing will come of it. Rejection is a part of the game, don’t get discouraged. Just keep at it! 1) Ensure you have a professional query letter. 2) Make sure your manuscript is in the correct format - there are books out there that can help with this. 3) Find the market that is looking for what you have created.
