Welcome We have a range of courses for all age groups and are confident that you will find something of interest at one of Swindon Borough Council’s sports, leisure, golf or tennis centres. Courses are listed alphabetically by topic and are broken down into age groups. We look forward to welcoming you onto one of our courses soon.

How to Enrol New Course Enrolments

Moving up a Course Level

Please contact the specific course venue (detailed on the back page) to find out availability, pricing and enrolment dates for any of our courses. New enrolments will be processed on a first come, first served basis. Please contact the site for the days and times of new enrolments.

We cannot guarantee spaces on a higher level course as demand may outweigh availability.

Priority Booking for Courses If you are currently on a course, contact reception during priority week to pay for your next course. You must pay by mail, in person or by telephone during priority week to retain your place.

Payment All courses must be paid for in advance. Switch, Delta, Solo, Electron, EDC, Maestro, Visa and Mastercard are accepted at all sites. Swimming courses can now be paid by Direct Debit to save you time and money. Ask for details.

Late Bookings

Late bookings may be accepted subject to availability.

Cancellations When a course attracts insufficient enrolments and is cancelled, an alternative course may be offered or you will be provided with a full refund. This is the only circumstance where refunds will be given.

Indoor Climbing Available at: Link Centre

Climbing for Juniors Rock Hugger Sessions (5 - 7 years) This is the perfect way for young children to get involved in climbing. Supervised and managed by friendly, experienced instructors.

Junior Foundation Course (8 – 15 years)The Junior Foundation

Course is the perfect way for kids under the age of 16 to get involved in rock climbing during term time. With the help of our highly experienced instructors, juniors will learn the basics of becoming a safe, competent and confident climber. Junior Foundation Camps are available during school holidays.

NICAS The Ridge is a primary centre for the delivery of the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

The Ridge is an access organisation for this scheme.


Adult Lead Climbing Course If you are already a competent top rope climber and you’re looking to take the next step, the Adult Lead Course is for you. With the tuition of our highly experienced instructors you will learn all the skills needed to become a safe and competent lead climber.

Climbing for Adults (16+) Adult Beginners Course If you have no experience of climbing and are keen to learn, the Adult Beginners course is for you. Delivered by our highly experienced and qualified instructors you will learn the skills necessary to become a safe, competent and confident top rope climber.

Group Bookings & Corporate Events Whether you want a session for you and your family, your friends, your school pupils or your business team, group & corporate sessions can be structured to suit your needs.

Private Tuition (5+ years) With a maximum ratio of 2 people to 1 instructor, brush up on your skills quickly in a structured environment.

The BMC recognises that climbing is an activity with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions.


Dance & Pilates

Ballet (2+ years) Beginners and those who have been to classes previously work in ability groups to build confidence and experience through listening to instructions and practising improvisation skills. Warm ups, basic positioning of feet and arms and even some French words are learnt in an atmosphere of freedom and creativity.

This fun based activity offers the opportunity to work with Chelsea Ballet, a professional dance company, at least once a year, as well as working with guest teachers. Enrol now and enjoy making new friends whilst keeping fit and healthy. Available at: The Rec


Tap (5 – 15 years)

Body Control Pilates (16+ years)

Contemporary, pop and jazz music bring this dance form right up to date in group based courses which major on techniques and choreography, teaching basic steps and co-ordination skills.

Improve your postural strength and alignment. Benefits include better sports and everyday performance, a tighter, trimmer waist and relief from back/ postural pain.

Football

Football in the Community Soccer Centres (age varies 4 – 11 years) For boys and girls of all abilities. The Centres are run by qualified FA coaches who work to a structured coaching programme designed for everyone’s involvement and enjoyment. They cover all aspects of football; dribbling, shooting, skills, small sided games and much more! Children need playing kit, trainers, shin pads and a drinks bottle to join in the fun. Tiny Tots Football (3 – 4 years) These basic courses are a fun introduction to football. Learn basic ball skills. For more information, contact 01793 421303. Available at: : Croft Sports Centre, Haydon Centre & Link Centre

Mini Soccer (4 – 5 years at Dorcan, 5 – 8 years at Croft) These sessions are a progression from Tiny Tots to help prepare your child for the soccer centres. For more information, contact 01793 465406. Available at: Croft Sports Centre and Dorcan Recreation Complex

DS Active (5 – 16+ years) These sessions are specifically aimed at those with Downs Syndrome. This is a funded session. For more information, contact Adam Greaney on 01793 421303. Available at: Haydon Centre


Golf - Swindon Golf Academy Available at: Broome Manor Golf Complex The foundation of any golf academy is its instructors. At Swindon Premier Golf Academy our team of fully qualified PGA professionals have over 60 years experience between them and use innovative teaching techniques with the latest video and computer technology. All coaches are CRB checked. If you are looking for a beginner’s course or something to enhance your game up to plus handicap, children from 4 years old to a master’s class, the Swindon Premier Golf Academy offers it all and delivers first class tuition. All lessons include use of clubs if required, reserved bays on the driving range & driving range balls.

One to One Lessons Ideal for individuals or small groups, one to one lessons are booked with one of our P.G.A. affiliated professionals. From initial swing check, to fine tuning to reduce your handicap, lessons can be held on the range, practise areas or on the course. 1 hour lessons can also be booked for on course playing.

Golf Group Lessons Available at: Broome Manor Golf Complex Courses All courses are 6 x 60 minute sessions in a maximum group of 8. P.G.A. affiliated professionals coach each session and all balls, clubs and equipment are included.

Adult Courses Learn all of the key skills to enjoy the game using irons and woods. Learn basic rules and etiquette. Beginners (16+ years) Please enquire for details

Junior Courses An ideal starting place for children. These courses teach basic golfing skills in an environment of encouragement and praise. These courses follow the Golf Foundation Passport Award Scheme. Tiny Tigers Programme (4 – 10 years) Monday – Friday 4.00pm – 5.00pm Tigers Junior Programme (11 – 14 years) Monday – Friday 4.00pm – 5.00pm Saturdays available


Junior Taster Sessions (4 – 16 years) A great way for children to try golf. Open to all ages and abilities. A perfect introduction to Tiny Tigers or Tiger courses. Saturday 10.15am – 11.00am

Recreation Sessions (pay as you go sessions) Covers different aspects of the game each week. For all levels of player. Ideal if you cannot attend regularly and to meet new people. Ladies and senior sessions include tea or coffee afterwards. Adults (16+ years) Monday 7.30pm – 8.30pm Ladies (16+ years) Friday 9.30am – 11.00am Seniors (55+ years) Friday 11.30am – 1.00pm


Gymnastics

Gymnastics (age varies 4 – 14 years) Make new friends and work as a team. Have fun and also improve your flexibility, stamina and strength through activities involving stretching, tumbling, balance and poise. The participants use equipment such as beams, vaults and mats to progress through the preliminary levels of the British Gymnastics badge scheme. Available at: The Rec


Ice Skating Available at: Link Centre

Ice Skating Courses - All ages (5+ years to Adult) Whether you aim to become a top skater or want to skate for fun, the best way to improve is to join one of our courses. At Link Centres Ice Academy we have a structured lesson plan where skating techniques progress from complete beginner to intermediate stages under the National Skate UK Awards scheme.

Ice Skating - Grades 1 to 10 Broad skating techniques progress from beginner to intermediate stages under the ten level National Skate UK Awards scheme. Learn to fall without injury, get up safely and enjoy a wide range of broad skating, moves, manoeuvres and techniques. Proficiency badges are awarded for each level.


Free Skating – Bronze, Silver and Gold (5 – 16+ years) For those who have completed the Skate UK grades 1 – 10 and want to be more adventurous. Our coaches can help you gain proficiency in jumps, spins, steps and so on, which can lead to competition level or national medal assessments.

Ice Dance – (16+ years) Incorporating music and movement for more experienced skaters who have completed Skate UK grades 1 – 10. Our qualified dance teachers who specialise in ice dance will soon have you gliding through dance moves and routines. By invitation only.

Ice Hockey and Figure Skating Club Our courses will teach you the disciplines required to feed into these elements. Please ask for further information at reception.


Swimming

Parent & Baby (2 months – 18 months)

Parent & Toddler (6 months – 4 years) (18 months – 4 years at The Rec) (6 months – 3 years at Dorcan)

From an early age, babies will instinctively move arms and legs when immersed in water. These teacher led sessions will help develop water confidence in both yourself and your baby.

Tots gain water confidence and parents learn how to handle their children in water, with everyone enjoying the bonding experience. Qualified instructors advise on techniques.

National Plan for Teaching Swimming Stages 1 – 10 We have adopted this comprehensive, progressive scheme, developed by the Amateur Swimming Association, which is designed to be incorporated into all learn to swim schemes throughout the UK. The plan concentrates largely on developing water confidence and producing technically accurate swimmers with a solid foundation to move on to participation across the range of swimming disciplines. All lessons include a registration period.

Junior Stages 1 – 10 (4 – 15 years) (4 – 10 years at The Rec) (5 – 15 years at Link) This is the first stage where children gain water confidence and develop movement skills. Rookie Lifeguard (8+ years)

Adult Learn to Swim (16+ years)

Self rescue, rescue of others, response to emergencies and water safety are the main elements of this valuable grounding in personal water safety.

for absolute beginners and ends with advanced courses for experienced swimmers. It’s all about building strength and confidence and encouraging swimmers at every level to improve their technique.

This can be a great start to obtaining formal lifesaving qualifications later on. Available at: Link & The Rec

Teenage Learn to Swim (11 – 16 years)

Flip N Fun Diving (6+ years)

A beginners learn to swim programme designed exclusively for young people.

This course offers children and young people the chance to experience something new and challenging. The aim is to have fun!

Tennis Available at: Delta Tennis Centre

Mini Tennis Awards Scheme There are three stages, Red, Orange and Green. Within each of these there are three levels, progressing from an easy start, via a longer second phase, to getting better and preparing to move on to the next stage. Parents are encouraged to help with off court tasks throughout. The ages stated for courses are for guidance only. New participants will be assessed prior to enrolment. To arrange assessment, contact 465490. All courses are run in school term time from 4pm onwards.

Mini Tennis Skills (3 – 5 years) An ideal starting place for children, this course teaches basic tennis skills in an environment of fun, with encouragement and praise.


Mini Tennis Red (5 – 8years) This first stage of Mini Tennis emphasises basic movement and ball skills. As children progress, they are introduced to rallying and playing in fun competitions.

Mini Tennis Orange (8 – 10years) Children are introduced to playing on a three quarter sized court with a low bounce ball which slows the game down to a speed which allows them time to play good shots and have fun.

Mini Tennis Green (10 – 11 years) A full sized court is now used but

with a light, low bounce ball which encourages good technique. There is a little more emphasis on playing and scoring in competitions, moving toward full tennis playing and scoring. Delta Tennis Centre – home of the Wilson shop with tennis rackets, shoes, clothing, bags, rucksacks, water bottles and accessories. For all of your tennis needs.


Teen Beginners (12+ years) Complete beginners or those who have hardly held a racket before can learn the forehand and backhand shots, the art of serving as well as tactics and fitness needed to play the game of tennis.

Teen Improvers (11 – 13 & 13+ years) Pupils with moderate tennis experience (i.e. The ability to maintain a rally). There will be coaching on physical movement and footwork to and from the ball, and lots of emphasis on developing the service action and the returning of serve.

Adult Beginners (16+ years)

Cardio Tennis A fun group activity with plenty of drills to give players of all ages the ultimate, high energy workout. Each session includes a warm up, cardio workout and cool down phase. The programmes and drills are geared towards existing players who will benefit from a workout whilst improving their skill. A great new way to get in shape and burn calories.

For those who have played little or no tennis, or have not played for a long time. Courses will cover basic stroke production, rules and fun match play.

Adult Improvers (16+ years) For those who have progressed from the beginners course, or already have reasonable playing experience. Courses will reinforce the basic stroke production, the use of spin and enhanced tactical play.


Sessions for Deaf Users (5+ years) The cost of these courses are subsidised by the Swindon Borough Council Ability Sports Project. These sessions are for any ability and consist of drills and tennis play. The sessions are run in blocks but you can join in at any time! The deaf sessions have a sign interpreter.

Sessions for Wheelchair Users (5 – 12 years and 13+ years) The cost of these courses are subsidised by the Swindon Borough Council Ability Sports Project. These sessions are for any ability and consist of wheelchair drills and tennis play. The sessions are run in blocks but you can join in at any time!


Trampolining Toddler Bounce (2 – 5 years) (2 – 4 years at The Rec) In groups of not more than five, tots will have fun learning disciplines such as waiting and taking turns. They will learn jumping skills, seat drops and front drops, twists and tucks – in a safety conscious environment. Each child must be accompanied by an adult and a qualified trampoline coach will always be with you. Socks must be worn on the trampoline. Available at: Haydon Centre & The Rec.

Junior Trampolining (5 – 12 years) (4 – 16 years at The Rec) Youngsters can enjoy serious trampolining from age 5, progressing at their own pace through the British Gymnastics Trampoline Awards Scheme. Complex skills such as somersaults can be learnt during these sessions. Socks must be worn on the trampoline. Available at: Haydon, Link & The Rec

Adult Trampolining (16+ years) Most adult trampolining is pure recreation, so you won’t feel out of place if you are a novice. Learn trampolining safety, basic skills and jumps. Our coaches can help you progress through the British Gymnastics Trampoline Awards Scheme.
