GWI spotlights wellness design

The Global Wellness Institute’s (GWI) Wellness Architecture and Design Initiative (WADI) has released an in-depth white paper exploring the principles, strategies and benefits of incorporating wellness into the built environment.

Titled Pathways to Wellness Architecture and Design, the comprehensive 174-page publication aims to guide investors, developers, architects and stakeholders in adopting holistic, evidencebased design practices that positively impact individuals, communities and the planet.

“Planning, designing and building to enhance our immune systems, mental health and community wellbeing are essential for future generations and the planet,” said Lahra Tatriele, chair

of the WADI. Tatriele is also co-founder and chief wellness strategist of Alchemy Concepts and co-founder of Fivelements.

She added: “This paper presents a new paradigm, emphasising that wellness architecture and design is not merely a movement but a shift in

attitudes, behaviours and practices,

Supported by global case studies and evidence, the publication is the result of a collaborative two-year effort by an interdisciplinary team of architects, designers and developers.

Jeremy McCarthy

McCarthy: Wellness had watershed moment in 2024

For three decades, the wellness trend in hospitality has been gradually gaining momentum. Yet, according to Jeremy McCarthy – group director of leisure, spa and wellness at Mandarin Oriental – the industry shattered an “atmospheric ceiling” in 2024, reaching new heights of innovation and integration.

In his latest column for Spa Business, McCarthy reflects on a transformative year that has embedded wellness at the heart of hospitality. He describes 2024 as a pivotal moment that has set the stage for even greater advancements in 2025.

“While wellness has been a simmering macro trend for over a decade, I’ve never witnessed such a tangible leap forward in a single year,” McCarthy explains. “It’s as if the hospitality industry is reinventing itself in a virtual explosion of new wellness concepts and innovations.”

A new research study exploring how noticing nature can boost mental wellbeing will launch in Canada this month

■ There is a wealth of research which shows the physical benefits of spending time in nature

Concordia University of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada is kicking o a study that will measure the impact of noticing nature on mental health.

Professor and researcher, Dr Holli-Anne Passmore, is leading the research. This is the fourth time she has undertaken this type of research, but the first time during winter.

Passmore told Spa Business' sister-magazine HCM she wants to see if noticing nature can boost the low moods which often creep in during the dark days of winter.

In the middle of winter in Alberta there are only seven hours of daylight and temperatures can drop to -35C. Although, unlike the UK, the days are mostly clear and sunny.

In previous studies – undertaken in the US, Canada and China – the research has come back with the same results, showing that nature boosts positive emotions and life satisfaction.

“Noticing nature brings about transcendent connectedness – a feeling of being connected to nature and other people,” says Passmore.

“It also inspires elevation – a beautiful composite emotion made up of gratitude, wonder, awe and a sense of feeling uplifted.

■ Spas and wellness facilities immersed in nature remain a popular choice for global wellness consumers

What is really important is that we don’t ask people to spend more time outside in order to get the benefits

“We will be focusing on these two variables in the research, as well as hope.”

Passmore first carried out the Noticing Nature Intervention in 2016 and her paper was later published in The Journal of Positive Psychology.

“We have always done the research in cities and people are always surprised about how much nature is around and how noticing it impacts their mood,” she explained.

“Nature is everywhere and noticing it boosts wellbeing.”

Finer details

The study is starting in January and will continue throughout February and March, with approximately 150 students.

Divided into two groups, one group will carry on as usual while the other group of participants will be asked

to notice nature in their everyday lives and how it makes them feel.

All participants will be questioned before and after the research period and each day will need to log in to report their experience.

“What is really important is that we don’t ask people to spend more time outside in order to get the benefits," Passmore explained.

“It’s about how engaged they are with it and what they observe: even looking out of the window while they’re working, noticing the colour of the sky, the clouds, birds in a tree, the tree at the bus stop, or flowers at the store all have benefits. Nature is accessible to everyone."

While this study only measures mental health benefits, there is a wealth of research which shows the physical benefits of spending time in nature.●

I don’t think anyone in the UK has yet fully captured the communal aspect of wellness
Chris Miller, CEO and founder of White Rabbit Projects

Creating community

In a Spa Business exclusive, the founder behind London’s hot new communal contrast therapy club talks blending wellness with connection

The social wellness club movement that has taken the US East Coast by storm looks set to reshape London’s wellness scene in early 2025. ARC, an all-new urban wellness brand, is due to launch in January, bringing a fresh concept that blends connection, community and evidence-based wellness practices to the UK.

The brand’s flagship location will open in London’s bustling Canary Wharf business district, specifically chosen so that ARC can serve as a sanctuary for professionals prioritising peak performance and wellbeing.

Facilities will include the UK’s largest sauna (created by Finnmark Sauna and big enough for up to 65 people), eight two-person Brass Monkey ice baths, an amphitheatre-style lounge area

■ ARC's philosophy is built on the foundational pillars of contrast bathing, community and connection

■ The brand seeks to provide a vibrant, health-focused alternative to traditional social spaces

We want to keep things democratic – the benefits are so profound I want to make them available to al

– complete with a striking central art installation – and mixed changing rooms.

The vision

The new social bathhouse brand is the brainchild of Chris Miller, CEO and founder of White Rabbit Projects, a hospitality incubator that designs, develops and operates hospitality concepts.

With a background as the commercial director for Soho House Group, Miller was inspired to create ARC after experiencing leading US wellness clubs including Remedy Place, Othership and Bathhouse.

"I visited these places alone, and by the time I'd completed my cycles of extreme heat and cold, not only did I feel physically incredible, but I’d also met amazing people and felt a genuine sense of community," Miller told Spa Business in an exclusive interview.

Recognising a gap in the UK for a similar concept he saw an opportunity to create a space where connection and wellness intersect.

Having observed the lack of community focus first-hand in many boutique fitness and wellness o erings in London, Miller was motivated to design a space where people could come together as part of their wellness journey.

"I don’t think anyone in the UK has yet fully captured the communal aspect of wellness," he says. "At ARC, we’ve crafted a large, community-focused space with class-based, science-backed programming to enhance connection."

Miller's personal experience further shaped his vision. After an autoimmune diagnosis, he explored various wellness practices including contrast therapy alongside a range of nutritional approaches. After an

18-month journey, Miller's case was ruled a misdiagnosis which he says only deepened his appreciation for the power of holistic health. Through his own transformation, Miller recognised the growing demand for a wellness environment that fosters both personal health and a strong sense of belonging.

Democratic wellness

Unlike most other social wellness club businesses, ARC is breaking from the traditional membership model to ensure accessibility. Visitors will be able to choose between multi-class packages or one-o drop-in sessions.

“We want to keep things democratic, the benefits are so profound I want to make them available to all,” Miller explains.
