CROCHET colorblock wrap

kids scarf & hat set

T

his wrap is a step up from a scarf, has color changes, and incorporates multiple stitches into a new stitch pattern. The new crocheter who is looking to challenge his or herself will find a challenge in this wrap.

T

est out your new found crochet skills with this very easy double crochet scarf. Use a striping yarn to achieve that color change look without having to actually make color changes. Now that you’ve made a scarf, why not take your skills up a notch and make this simple hat in the round with a fun pom-pom on top to match? This set is sure to be a favorite of any little one in your life.

The stitch pattern is simple enough but you will be working multiple stitches into a space. This can be a little confusing at first but once you get going, you will have no trouble at all. Especially since the stitch pattern is also a one row repeat. I made sure to choose a stitch pattern that would challenge your new crochet skills while still being something you could remember.

BODY

The stitch pattern does create a textural stitch pattern but I wanted a little bit more to the wrap so I included color changes. There are two big blocks of color then a large section with stripes.

Ch 22.

scarf

The contrast of the bold solid color sections and the stripes makes for a very visually impactful piece even with the muted colors I chose.

Baskets are made holding two strands together throughout.

BASE

Crocheted dishcloths are a great way to try out new stitches or practice the stitches you already know. These dishcloths are meant to do just that, have you practice the stitches you’ve learned. Made up of sc, hdc, and dc, you are sure to get a good feel for how these stitches are made and how they look when made next to one another. The resulting texture of these stitches makes for a wonderful scrubbie dishcloth.

KNITTING getting started

FIBER

nitting books are there to teach and inspire you. Begin your journey into this wonderful world of knitting. Take a moment to learn how to do basic stitches, then put your knowledge to work to make a simple piece in Garter Stitch or step up your game and try your hand at ribbing. Once you feel comfortable with that, you can begin to learn more intermediate stitches and then make a dishcloth or a shawl. By the time you have made the projects in this book, you will be ready to make any knitting pattern or project.

Choosing yarn for your project is an exciting part of the knitting process. The possibilities are endless! Here are some of the top things you should consider when picking out the yarn you want to use.

WEIGHT When following a pattern you often want to have a finished item that is similar to the sample. However, we know that there are times when you want to use a different yarn. Yes, you can do that. But, when you choose the new yarn, it is important that you pay attention

to the weight of the yarn used in the sample versus the weight of your new yarn choice. The Craft Yarn Council (CYC) has made it easy for us knitters to know the weights of yarn by assigning labels to them. We now have a standard to go by. On each of the patterns in this book, in the shopping list, you will find a symbol next to the yarn. That symbol indicates the CYC standard weight of the yarn used in the pattern. As long as you choose a yarn that has that same symbol or same weight, you should be good to go.

Just as the weight of the yarn is important, so too is the fiber content. Not all fibers are the same. Each type of fiber has unique characteristics that must be taken into account when considering substitution (which is pretty much a pattern-by-pattern process). Here are some examples: Machine Washability Mercerized merino, cotton and most acrylics are machine washable, but silk or pure wool are not.

If you change the weight of yarn for a project not only will the size of the project change (assuming you adjust the gauge to get what works best for the yarn you are using) but your yarn amounts will change. So be sure you have enough of the yarn you want to use.

Elasticity This is the fiber’s ability to stretch and contract, which affects an item’s ability to regain its original shape. Animal fibers and some synthetics are stretchy, while plant fibers are not.

In general, the closer you stick to the recommended fiber type, the more predictable the results will be.

wordofcaution When working seed stitch, it is easy to get off track and lose the pattern. Remember that when you work seed stitch you will always work a knit stitch in a purl stitch, and work a purl stitch in a knit stitch.

COLOR Color can be very intimidating and sometimes challenging for a crafter. It is a difficult thing for me as well. Here is a little tip I have to help you put colors together. When I am working on a new pattern that has multiple colors, I always take a look at the different fabrics that are available. I look for color combinations that I like or that are on-trend. When I find one, I then find a yarn with the same or similar colors and go from there. Not hard at all, right? I put together colors that speak to me for all the projects in this book. For the most part they are soft and soothing, but you will find a couple of brighter options like the yoga mat bag or the market bag. Here is the deal, these colors

work great for me but if a particular color doesn’t speak to you and you wish to change it, PLEASE, DO! You officially have my permission.

f you MUST make a scarf why not make it fun? Once again, garter stitch makes for a perfect stitch for this project as it is reversible and will not curl. I partnered garter stitch with bold stripes of Chic Sheep by Marly Bird™ yarn to create the perfect scarf.

The best way to go about choosing a new color for any project is to pick a color you love, choose a striping or variegated yarn with colors you love, or use the color wheel to help you choose complementary colors or different hues/ shades of a color.

Finished Size: 10" wide x 64" long (25.5 cm x 162.5 cm)

There are three types of colors—primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary colors are red, blue, and yellow. Secondary colors are created by mixing two primary colors to create orange, green, and purple. Tertiary colors are created by mixing adjacent primary and secondary colors creating yellow-orange, yellowgreen, blue-green, blue-purple, red-purple, and red-orange.

Modern Baby Judy Lamb

JUDY LAMB is a knit designer who learned how to knit at the age of 8, but didn't really get into knitting until her college years. She now loves to shower her grandchildren with her creations. She is inspired by the fascination of what can be created with just a pair of knitting neeedles and some string. Sweaters are her favorite projects, which she learned how to master over time. She also enjoys crocheting, playing the piano, reading, cooking, sewing, writing, tatting, and dabbling in bobbin lacework. For more of her designs, visit leisurearts.com and jaslamb.weebly.com. Modern Woodburning Dana Hoover

DANA HOOVER is a self-taught

woodburning artist born and raised in Northeast Ohio. Since childhood, she has felt the constant desire to create and took every high school art class she was able to, falling in love with many different mediums along the way. Dana’s love of the outdoors eventually led to her true passion, woodburning. She believes getting outside is good for the soul and seeks most of her inspiration from nature. She feels incredibly blessed to be living her dream making art while inspiring others along the way. CRAFT BURNING POINTS

2

While there are many other points that come with your woodburning kit, these 4 will be the most used. Some others include the tapered point, as well as stamping points. My best advice is take some time to get comfortable with the tool and experinment with each point. Dedicate a piece of scrap wood for trying different techiques and learn what works best for you!

UNIVERSAL POINT The universal point is the most important point to master because it performs many techniques. Use it to burn straight and curved lines by holding it upright and flat against the wood. Lay the point on its side and gently glide across the wood while lifting the point to achieve shading and add depth.

3

There are many ways to finish woodburned projects. It’s not always necessary to use a stain or sealer, but the piece will be protected and have a more completed look.

2. Turn the wood slice to a comfortable position and use quick downward strokes to burn the tree branches.

• Clear gloss spray sealer will protect the design, especially if color was used.

3. Mix the blue watercolor paint with water on your dish or palette until the color is thin and transparent. Paint the background of the design, using thin coats of paint to build up the color and create depth. Let dry, then use the white acrylic paint to add stars to the sky.

32

• Light-colored wood stains add depth and bring out the beautiful wood grain. • Cutting boards and kitchen utensils should be sealed with a food-safe oil. Cutting board oil is readily available in most stores, but coconut or beeswax oil are great natural options. These wood items should be protected with oil on a regular basis.

CRAFT PAINT STICK TABLE RUNNER Finished size: approx. 11⁄"w x 41"l

STYLE TIP

TO MAKE THE CANVAS

You can buy paint sticks in bulk online and at some home improvement stores.

1. Gather your supplies. 2. Lightly sketch out your design of overlapping and intersecting triangles and lineson the canvas. These lines will be covered with gold leaf sheets. Apply tape over the lines, using a ruler to keep the tape straight. Use the craft knife to trim the tape at the corners and points for crisp lines and angles.

SHOPPING LIST • 37 paint sticks (one side must be blank)

3. Paint the canvas; allow to dry and add a second coat of paint if desired.

• 5 ½" x 41" piece of naturalcolored burlap

4. Carefully remove the tape. Apply a smooth, thin layer of craft glue over the pencil lines; allow to dry until tacky. Carefully apply the gold leaf metal sheets, brushing away the excess with a soft, fluffy brush. Lightly buff the gold areas with the fluffy brush. Once the glue is dry, apply a coat of sealer to the canvas.

• white acrylic paint • 1" paintbrush • water-based sealer or varnish • painter’s tape • cardstock scrap • tracing paper • pencil • craft knife • scissors • hot glue gun and glue sticks

TO MAKE THE CANVAS

Finished size: 8"w x 12"l x 1⁄"d

1. Gather your supplies.

STYLE TIP

2. Place the circle template on the canvas in the upper right corner. Use the pencil to lightly draw around the circle. Use the pencil and ruler to lightly draw triangle “mountains” along the bottom of the canvas. Some should overlap, one should be tall (12"), one should be short (6"), and the others should fall somewhere in between.

If the washi tape doesn’t stick well to the canvas, add a bit of craft glue under the tape strip.

SHOPPING LIST

3. Adhere strips of metallic gold washi tape to the canvas for the sun and for the tallest tree. Use the paper you removed from the back of the washi tape to evenly space the gold stripes of washi tape.

• 8"w x 12"l x 1⁄"d unfinished wood tray • 2 1½" diameter unfinished wood ball knobs • acrylic paint (white, charcoal grey, blue & chartreuse)

4. Being careful to not cut the canvas, use the craft knife and ruler to trim the washi tape that extends beyond the drawn tree lines; trim along the sun lines as well.

• water-based sealer or varnish • 1" paintbrush • painter’s tape

5. Tape off the trees that you wish to paint pink. Use the craft knife to trim the tape to smooth points. Paint the trees pink. Mix white paint with the pink paint for a lighter pink color. Once the paint has dried, remove the tape. Tape off and paint the grey tree in the same manner. Erase any pencil marks.

• ruler • craft knife • hot glue gun and glue sticks

STYLE TIP Apply several coats of sealer to the tray if you will be using it to serve drinks.

Legend holds that bluebells are used by fairies to call one another to their gatherings. These whimsical flowers certainly bring to mind an enchanting woodland clearing after the chill of winter has passed.

START HERE: Try your first drawing by using this pattern at left to trace. Then in the available space below, draw a few more Bluebells freehand.

Bluebells come in every shade of blue imaginable, as well as purple, pink, and white. To add depth and realism to your art, experiment with shading and layering colors to capture all the hues represented in these flowers. Bluebells are lovely displayed on their own, but their gentle curved shape also makes them a lovely addition to other arrangements, spilling over the edges of a vase. Try pairing them with other flowers in shades of pink, blue, and purple for a simple springtime arrangement. Bluebells are a beautiful expression of love, representing ongoing faithfulness and steadfastness. They are perfect for Mother’s Day and other springtime events.

Why a Weighted Blanket?

 1 yd (91 cm) of blue print fabric for blocks

A weighted blanket molds to your body like a warm hug. Doctors and therapists believe that the pressure helps relax the nervous system and causes the brain to release neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine that improve moods and induce a calming effect. This helps many people relax naturally.

 17/8 yds (1.7 m) of fabric for backing

Weighted blankets are often used by people with autism, Asperger’s syndrome, restless leg syndrome, chronic pain, anxiety, stress, sensory processing disorders, and many other conditions. Many people use them just because they believe the weight of the blanket helps them sleep better.

Consult your doctor or occupational therapist regarding using a weighted blanket - the correct size, the correct weight, and the duration for use. Do not use a weighted blanket if you have respiratory, circulatory, or temperature regulation problems, or post surgery. We do not recommend weighted blankets for children younger than 6 years of age. Never leave a small child unattended when using a weighted blanket. Make sure the child is strong enough to push the blanket off, if necessary.

is essential. Presser feet that are 1/4" wide are available for most sewing machines.

• When piecing, always place pieces right sides together and match raw edges; pin if necessary.

Sewing Sharp Points

• Chain piecing saves time and will

To ensure sharp points when joining triangular or diagonal pieces, stitch across the center of the “X” (shown in pink) formed on wrong side by previous seams (Fig. 5).

• Trim away points of seam allowances that extend beyond edges of sewn pieces.

when pressing cotton fabrics.

• When piecing the blanket top, press after sewing each seam. Seam allowances are almost always pressed to one side, usually toward the darker fabric. However, to reduce bulk it may occasionally be necessary to press seam allowances toward the lighter fabric or even to press them open. To prevent the dark fabric seam allowance from showing through light fabric, trim darker seam allowance slightly narrower than lighter seam allowance.

SEWING

Round Rug

5. Continue in this manner until you have joined all the strips. Just keep feeding the strips through the machine one aer the other without cuing the threads between the strips.

Round and round and round she goes! Express your fun, funky, personal style with this fringed round rug. This fun rug can serve both a functional and decorative purpose in your home.

6. Cut the thread chains between the joined strips. Trim the ends of the strips ¼" from the stitching line. Press the seam allowances open.

FINISHED SIZE: 33" (84 cm) diameter, excluding fringe

7. Fan-fold the strips in approximately 16"–18" lengths. Using a scrap strip of fabric, loosely tie the folded strips near each end. This will help control the strip and keep it from geing tangled as you sew.

Joining the Strips SHOPPING LIST A jelly roll strip measures 2½" x approx. 40" (6 cm x 102 cm).  1 jelly roll® or 40 strips 2½" x approx. 40" (6 cm x 102 cm)  50 yd (46 m) roll of 2½" (6 cm) wide cotton batting  large spool of thread to coordinate with your strips  Size 90/14 universal needle  Size 100/16 jeans needle  walking foot to fit your machine  Mary Ellen’s Best Press™ Clear Starch Alternative

Insert a size 90/14 universal needle in your sewing machine. Set your stitch length on 11 stitches per inch or 2.0 to 2.5 mm. Fill 4-6 bobbins. Pay close aention to your bobbin thread as you sew. You’ll probably run out of bobbin thread while you’re sewing! 1. Unroll your jelly roll strips. You can rearrange the strips if desired but I typically leave the strips in the order they came.

1. Begin with the end of the fabric strip that you want to be on the outside edge of your basket. Matching raw edges, place the end of the baing strip ½" from the end on the wrong side of the jelly roll strip. Fold the strips in half lengthwise; pin. To taper the end, cut as shown in Fig. 3. 2. Open the folded strips and fold the tapered end of the fabric strip over the end of baing strip.

4. Place one end of the first strip right side up horizontally in front of you. Place one end of the second strip vertically across the first strip (Fig. 1). Sew a diagonal seam to join the strips (Fig. 2). This stitching line can be marked if desired. Don’t worry about trimming the selvages before sewing the strips together. Just overlap the ends enough that the selvage is not included in the joined strip. Do not cut your thread ends.

Insert a size 100/16 jeans needle in your sewing machine. Set your stitch length on 9 stitches per inch or 2.5 to 3 mm.

Cut Line

2. Use a rotary cuer to trim the selvage edge from one end of each strip. Cut 10" from the trimmed end of each strip. Set the 10" lengths aside for fringe. 3. Place the stack of strips to the le of your sewing machine with the strips you want on the outside of the rug on the top of the stack.

3. Fold each long edge to the center of the strips (Fig. 1); fold strips in half again (Fig. 2). Pin the double-folded edges together. Clover Wonder Clips® can also be used to hold the strips closed as you sew.

Making the Table Runner

4. Sew about ¼" from the double-folded edge; trim threads. It is important to have the folded edges even and to catch all the layers when sewing.

1. Arrange strips side by side in pairs of matching strips to make a flag paern.

Decorate your table in style with this set of place mats. Perfect for guests or every day, these place mats are machine washable. FINISHED SIZE: 15" x 14½" (38 cm x 37 cm)

2. Holding the tube edges close together, stitch tubes together in pairs. To ensure that the seamed red/blue and white/ blue strips match, begin sewing at the seam. Stitch from the seam to the end in one direction. Then turn the pieces and stitch from the seam to the opposite end in the other direction. Make sure pairs are straight and do not curve. Use Best Press™ to press each pair.

5. Repeat Steps 3-4 for all strips.

Place Mats

Set your stitch width on 5mm and your stitch length on 9 stitches per inch or 2.5 to 3 mm. Aach the walking foot to your machine.

Making the Tubes SHOPPING LIST A jelly roll strip measures 2½" x approx. 40" (6 cm x 102 cm). Supplies and instructions are for making 4 place mats.  1 jelly roll® or 40 strips approx. 2½" x 40" (6 cm x 102 cm)

3. Sew pairs into sets of 4. Press each set to eliminate any curves. Sew sets of 4 into sets of 8; press. (Note: There will be 1 set of 2 strips remaining. These will be the last set added.)

4. Pressing as you go, sew sets of 8 strips together, ending with the set of 2 strips.

TIPS: • Fill a few bobbins. Pay close aention to your bobbin thread as you sew. You’ll probably run out of bobbin thread while you’re sewing!

 Size 100/16 jeans needle

5. Place a long ruler across the end of the table runner. Trim each end of the flag even.

 walking foot to fit your machine  Mary Ellen’s Best Press™ Clear Starch Alternative

• Before you start joining your tube edges, test your zigzag stitch. Every sewing machine is slightly different. You want a zigzag stitch that is wide enough to catch all the thick layers and short enough to secure the layers of the table runner. Also check your tension to assure you are geing a nice stitch.

1. Cut 40 baing strips same length as jelly roll strips. 2. Matching long raw edges, place one baing strip on the wrong side of the jelly roll strip. 3. Fold each long edge to the center of the strips (Fig. 1); fold strips in half again (Fig. 2). Pin the double-folded edges together. Clover Wonder Clips® can also be used to hold the strips closed as you sew. 4. Sew about ¼" from the double-folded edge; trim threads. It is important to have the folded edges even and to catch all the layers when sewing.

Fabric: Wrong Side Fabric: Right Side

• Let the walking foot do the work! Gently guide the tube with your hands. You may find a machine quilting grip glove helpful.

Insert a size 100/16 jeans needle in your sewing machine. Set your stitch length on 9 stitches per inch or 2.5 to 3 mm. Fill a few bobbins. Pay close aention to your bobbin thread as you sew. You’ll probably run out of bobbin thread while you’re sewing!

5. Repeat Steps 2–4 for all strips.

White Batting

• Sew slowly; sewing rapidly may cause your thread to break. • Keep the tubes straight as you sew; don’t let them curve. FIG. 1 15
