WHY IS THE SHOPPING DAY CALLED ‘BLACK FRIDAY’? In our Q&As, historians and experts answer your historical conundrums. On the shopping day known as 'Black Friday', millions descend on the shops to spy out the best bargains. How did the day get its name?

Black Friday has been adopted as the unofficial opening to the Christmas shopping period. It all began in the United States as a day of ‘doorbuster’ sales the day after Thanksgiving but increasingly, Britain is getting into the swing of things – sometimes literally, as brawls and all-out fights are quite common among scrapping shoppers. Retailers love the day of discounts as billions are spent within a matter of hours, but there is one organisation for whom the day brings nothing but despair: the police. In 1966, the Philadelphia Police Department grew so frustrated by the congested streets, traffic jams and regular tussles that, it’s believed, they coined the name ‘Black Friday’ in the hope of dissuading people from heading to the shops. It completely failed, but the name stuck.

Understandably, retailers weren’t keen on the name – it had strong associations with the Great Depression of the 1930s, signalled by Black Thursday – so they tried to reinvent the image of the Black Friday frenzy. The ‘black’, it was argued, referred to the ledgers used by retailers. For the majority of the year, shops would be ‘in the red’ (losing money) but Black Friday indicated the moment when most retailers would start making a profit, or going ‘in the black’. So that is how Black Friday got its name. There is no evidence to the regularly espoused theory that it went back to a 19th century tradition when slave owners would sell their weak or elderly slaves at low prices. Fortunately, that story is purely apocryphal. 2

A laptop is a big investment, so you want to keep it in good shape for as long as possible. Start by avoiding this no-no that tech experts see all too often. You never compress your data Over time, the files on your laptop can become fragmented, meaning files that should be next to each other aren’t. If you have a Windows laptop, “defragging” your computer is a way of compressing and putting those files back together so that your computer doesn’t have to work so hard. “Basically, it organizes your data on your hard drive in a way that’s more efficient for the laptop,” says Eiland. “You can see the data being organized and the gaps being closed.” A defragmentation tool should already be built into your computer, so just type “defrag” in the search bar and it should pop up.

No, your feline friend isn't trying to sabotage your important work email. Cats can be mysterious creatures. You call their name to jump on your lap and they respond by walking in the other direction. They meow for food only to wander off as soon as you put it in their bowl. They curl up next to you for a good pet, purring with every stroke, when suddenly they decide it’s too much and run away. This may not describe all cats, but we can probably agree that feline behavior isn’t always easy to understand. Especially when it comes to computers. If you work on a laptop, you likely know that the joy of your cat’s company can easily turn into annoyance as he or she takes over your keyboard, sending emails accidentally, getting in the way of your video call, and even throwing off the balance of your device as it tumbles to the floor—cat and all. So, what’s the deal? Why is your cat so obsessed with a non-fuzzy, hardsurfaced piece of equipment that doesn’t dispense free food, offer love in return, or is even all that cozy to lay on? “Many cats sit on spots such as keyboards and laptops because they are near their favorite person and can be at the center of their attention,” explains Marilyn Krieger, Certified Cat Behavior Consultant and author of Naughty No More! Changing Unwanted Behaviors through Positive Reinforcement. “Usually people reinforce the behavior by petting the cat and/or talking with him. Cats quickly learn that when they sit on the keyboard they get what they want— attention.” If it’s becoming a real problem for you, and you find yourself locking your feline out of the room when you need to work—but dearly wish you could enjoy their affection, there are steps you can take. “You can break the habit by providing the cat a comfortable and a desirable place to settle that is next to you while simultaneously reinforcing and rewarding him with affection and attention when the cat is sitting or lying on it,” Krieger says. “At the same time, discourage him from hanging out on the keyboard by making it an uncomfortable place to sit and difficult to access.”

Hana Hong Superheroes may only exist in comics and movies, but some of these regular human abilities definitely qualify as superpowers. Advanced color vision The average eye has three cones, which means you can recognize colors in the red, green, and blue spectrums. This means you can distinguish roughly a million different shades, according to the BBC. However, there are so-called tetrachromats who walk among us and have four cones in their eyes. They can see ultraviolet shades, allowing them to appreciate 100 million distinct colors. The rare vision anomaly is more common in women than men, and a lot of people don’t even realize they have it. 10

If you were a kid in the 1970s, you might remember your first piece of Bubble Yum. So sweet! So soft! So‌ full of spider eggs?! What?! In some weird form of bubblegum backlash, rumors abounded that Bubble Yum was made from spider eggs, spider legs, or spider webs (depending on the source). It wasn’t true, and the company spent over $100,000 battling the rumor, which is still circulated to this day, thanks to repeated postings on the Internet.

Odds are, you’ll probably agree. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, which would it be?

A recent survey conducted by The Harris Poll posed this thought-provoking question to Americans across the country. More than 2,000 U.S. adults responded, and the results were enlightening. In an increasingly polarized country, where ideological differences result in shouting matches and pointed fingers, it’s heartening to know that Americans can agree on what really matters: pizza. Yes, the single food that most Americans would want to eat for the rest of their lives is pizza, which 21 percent of survey participants chose as their answer. It beat out steak (16 percent), tacos (11 percent), pasta (11 percent), and even the undeniably American hamburger (13 percent). This marks the third year in a row that pizza has received this honor through the California Pizza Kitchen’s National Pizza Survey. (It’s not biased, we swear.) The results also showed that pizza was the participants’ favorite cheat day food, and almost half feel less guilty about eating pizza if it includes vegetables, either as a topping or a veggie-based crust. Nearly all millennials surveyed said they would give up something for an entire year in order to have free pizza anytime; 43 percent would give up rosé wine, and 36 percent would give up avocados. And as pizza worked its way into the hearts of Americans, Americans made pizza a surprisingly significant part of their own matters of the heart. Of the participants who dated online, three in five said they would swipe right or match with someone who mentioned pizza in a dating profile. But the follow-through is just as important; 22 percent said if their date ate pizza with a knife and fork, they would not agree to a second date. Could pizza be the answer to our divided country? That remains to be seen. Until then, we should all raise a slice to the prospect of a better, cheesier tomorrow. Just don’t get us started on the thin crust vs. deep dish debate. 13

Honey is often referred to as “God’s medicine” and has tons of health benefits—and it’s great for your hair. “Honey has actually be used in wound care in some cultures and studies for its ability to naturally resist bacteria,” says Dr. Elizabeth Trattner A.P. DOM, doctor of Chinese and Integrative Medicine. The best part? It never expires! In fact, it’s not unusual for archaeologists to find thousandyear-old honeypots in ancient Egyptian tombs—these archaeologists found 3,000-yearold honey and it’s perfectly edible. So what’s the deal? According to Smithsonian, its sugar, low moisture levels, excessive acidity, natural gluconic acid, and natural hydrogen peroxide are the keys to its longevity. 18

ESHIMA OHASHI BRIDGE, JAPAN Feel like going on a rollercoaster ride in your car? That’s what it looks like you’ll be doing if you go for a cruise over this Japanese bridge. Although it only appears to be terrifyingly steep with a gradient of 6.1% and at a height of 144 feet tall, it sure does look scary. 21

HEUNING EN KANEEL DIEET MENGSEL • • • •

1 eetlepel Heuning 1 eetlepel Kaneel poeier 1 eetlepel Gemmer poeier 1 teelepel Kremetart (Cream of Tartar)

A dead female body lies at the bottom of a multistory building. It looks as though she committed suicide by jumping from one of the floors. When the detective arrives, he goes to the first floor of the building, opens the closed window, and flips a coin towards the floor. He goes to the second floor and does the exact same thing. He continues to do this until he gets to the top floor of the building. When he comes back down, he states that it was a murder and not a suicide. How does he know that? ANSWER: She couldn’t have jumped from any of the floors because when the detective went to each floor, all of the windows were closed 24
