Welcome O n behalf of the Mammoth Times staff, we welcome you to our home. We use the term “home” because the character of the Eastern Sierra’s restaurants has been built on the genuine hospitality you would receive in any one of our homes. Variety is the spice of dining in the Eastern Sierra. Restaurant owners are aware of the discerning nature of the modern vacationer, particularly when it comes to tastes and budgets. Thanks to the input of millions of winter and summer visitors (and to websites such as Yelp), the food and beverage businesses are prepared to serve you better than ever before, from continental cuisine to egalitarian burgers and fries. Our year-round resort offers countless adventures. Ski, ride, play golf, hike, and shop to your heart’s content, pop into a cozy café or pub to refresh yourself, then end your day with a visit to the spa, art gallery, or movie theater. Don’t miss the vibrant après scene, where it’s a prerequisite to socialize in your ski boots until the sun dips below the mountains. If you are a foodie, settle in for an unforgettable evening of sumptuous food and wine pairings, chat with your server about the local cuisine, and meet the chef who exquisitely prepared your meal. To start the day, several breakfast houses offer basic bacon and eggs, pancakes and omelets, or special treats like smoked pork chops and eggs Monterey. Hamburgers, sandwiches, French fries, onion rings, juicy charbroiled steaks, tender prime rib, fresh seafood, salads and potatoes prepared in a variety of ways are presented for lunch

and dinner in appealing and mouthwatering styles. After dinner, dancing and socializing at one of the friendly bars or lounges can top off a great day of winter or summer fun. Entertainment ranges from excellent live bands, to dynamic disco music or relaxing, easy-listening jazz. For sports buffs, there are several drinking establishments that have big-screen presentations of current athletic events and contemporary ski videos. Within the pages of this book you will find a guide to Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra’s hospitality and diverse dining establishments. After publishing Sierra Menus for the past 13 years, we’ve decided to take a different route this year. In addition to providing menus (or a sampling of a menu), we’ve also highlighted the restaurants themselves— their history, their specialties, their quirks, their chefs, and/or their owners. You don’t have to take our word, or the words from restaurant owners, either. This year, we received permission to print Yelp reviews from visitors and foodies who’ve wined and dined in the Eastern Sierra, offering yet another look inside each establishment. If you are a seasoned visitor to the Eastern Sierra, you will find that some of your favorite places are still here. While keeping their successful fare, these eateries have added new and exciting items for you to try. You also will find several new restaurants and bars listed in our Sierra Menus, an indication of the growing popularity of the Eastern Sierra as a vacationer’s paradise. Chefs from around the world have
settled in the area, bringing a variety of culinary creations to the discriminating vacationer. Skilled bakers, knowledgeable bartenders, enthusiastic waiters and waitresses and dedicated restaurant owners are prepared to make your dining and drinking experience comfortable and pleasurable. The goal of our Sierra Menus is to assist you in selecting and locating the eating and drinking establishments that best suit your budget and taste. Also new this year is our Sierra Menus website. We are excited and honored to provide the only website that offers updated year-round information of ALL the food and beverage establishment in the Eastern Sierra—from Bishop to Topaz. Visit www.sierra-menus.com and search restaurants by type of cuisine, price range, hours of operation, or nightlife, among many other options. Download menus right to your computer, smart phone or tablet, or visit the restaurants’ websites for more information. You can now find it all at www.sierra-menus.com. In a hurry? Check out the directory in the back of this publication for a list of restaurants up and down U.S. 395 organized by type of cuisine. Looking for a place with late dining or delivery on those stormy nights? Jump to page 65 for a quick look at where to order. While you’re out exploring the many options offered, be sure to take the time to speak with your host or server. Ask as many questions as you like and experience their passion firsthand. You will soon come to understand why we call the Eastern Sierra home.
Enjoy! 2013

Eagle’s Landing Restaurant
Double Eagle Resort 5587 Hwy 158 June Lake, CA 93529 (760) 648-7897 www.doubleeagle.com straight from
Specialties Melody B. San Juan Capistrano “We love the Eagle’s Landing and have been coming here for years. It has remained consistently enjoyable on several levels. Come during the daylight hours because the view from the dining room is amazing! The food was very good overall. The trout picatta was excellent as was the creamy basil ravioli. For a romantic dinner in a lovely setting, it’s hard to beat the Eagle’s Landing. We’ll definitely come back again!”
The Eagle’s Landing Restaurant offers the most spectacular views in the Eastern Sierra—waterfalls, jagged mountain peaks, and rushing streams—in addition to fine dining. It sits at the base of Carson Peak and looks directly at Horse-tail Falls. The grounds, rushing streams, towering pines, and overall resort ambience is unforgettable. Eagle’s Landing features a large, open rotisserie for many great offerings as well as a menu to please the most discerning appetite. The Eagle’s Nest Saloon, with its unique, hand-carved bar, offers a wide selection of fine wines, micro-brews, and a full bar. Appetizers and favorite TV sports programs can be enjoyed while “kicking back” in this cozy setting.
History
The resort lodging cabins and rooms, the restaurant, and the spa opened in 2000 and are often referred to as the “Little Awhanee.” The spa was listed as “one of the 10 best spas in the world” by Forbes. The restaurant offerings and lodging accommodations live up to this standard of excellence. In July of 2012, a major motion picture “Oblivion,” starring Tom Cruise and other notable stars, was filmed on owner Connie Black’s private property across the street from the resort. The multi-million dollar film is scheduled to be out in April 2013.
Meet the owners
Connie and Ron Black built the Double Eagle Resort after building a home in June Lake, where they planned to retire. When they decided to build the resort, their initial plan of retirement was forgotten. Guests always remark about the incredible beauty of the natural environment and the attention to detail the resort features. Ron passed away in 2010 and Connie and her son, Ralph, currently operate the resort on a day-to-day basis.

Historic Mono Inn
55620 Hwy 395 Lee Vining, CA 93541 (760) 647-6581 www.monoinn.com
History
Mono Inn was established in 1922 by Wally and Venita McFerson and has been a destination for locals and travelers for 90 years. As a destination resort, travelers would stay at the resort for the variety of local activities the region provided, including water skiing, fishing, and hiking. But what visitors appreciated most was its music entertainment. Venita was an accomplished pianist and would often entertain guests in the restaurant, a tradition that continues to present day. In 1996, the Ansel Adams family bought the establishment and operated it until 2007. The Mono Inn then closed for three years (from 2007 to 2010) and in 2011, the property—still owned by the Adams family—was leased to partners Jim O’Meally and Mario Aguilar. O’Meally and Aguilar re-opened the restaurant, now called The Historic Mono Inn.
Cuisine
Jim O’Meally is also the restaurant’s executive chef and describes the food as international peasant cuisine with the likes of paella, bolognaise, ceviche, and braised lamb shanks. When in season, he uses fresh herbs, fruits, and vegetables from a garden located on the premises for most of his dishes. O’Meally takes pride in running a kitchen

where nothing is pre-processed. In addition to its menu, the Historic Mono Inn offers a fine selection of wines and is the only place in the Eastern Sierra that offers wine tastings every day, either in the tasting room or tableside while customers are dining. As a certified sommelier, O’Meally also takes pride in pairing wines that will further compliment his dishes. Diners can enjoy a variety of wines from the restaurant’s wine bar as well. From white wines to red, sparking to dessert, the Historic Mono Inn offers wines for all palates. Additionally, the wine bar offers 20 beers from all over the world. Every year, The Historic Mono Inn features a different winery for its guests. In 2012, it featured wines from Cesar Toxqui Cellars from Mendocino.
Mark Twain Days Some time between 1870 and 1872, Samuel Clemens wrote a humorist travel memoir, titled “Roughing It,” reminiscing on his Wild West adventure days. Clemens, who became better known by his pen name, Mark Twain, spent two chapters of his semi-autobiographical novel detailing his experience in Mono County. Mark Twain Day was first staged by Venita in 1928 and it continued until 1944 to commemorate Twain’s stay at Mono Lake. The Mark Twain Day of the 1930s featured several swimming contests, including “horse swimming races,” a bathing suit beauty pageant, and power boat races. Liquor served: Beer & wine Takeout: Yes Delivery: No Children’s menu: No Wi-Fi: Yes
In September 2012, Mark Twain Days was brought back to the Mono Inn featuring eight bands, several vendors from California and Nevada, a BBQ, raffles, games, and a whole lot of fun! The inn will host the two-day festival again in 2013.
Music
Music is one of the underlining and ongoing features of the Historic Mono Inn. O’Meally, a former professor of music at Northern Arizona University, first worked at the Mono Inn as a pianist in 2001. He decided to continue the tradition of entertaining guests with music, just like Venita did. In addition to the piano, the inn features bands on one of its three stages (mostly Fridays and Saturdays). From classical to ska, rock to blues, the inn doesn’t discriminate music genres, and the public is always invited to join musicians on stage! With its entertainment and amazing views of Mono Lake, The Historic Mono Inn is the perfect place to sit back, taste a wide variety of wines, and eat some of the best food in the Eastern Sierra.

Feed your soul, feed your senses Come for the coffee, but stay for the food. sandwich and soy lime tri tip. Also worth nothing is every chicken cooked at Hot Chicks ’n Java Joint is hormone free. In addition, Hot Chicks ’n Java Joint has expanded its hours to include dinner, expanded its drink list to include beer and wine, and expanded its quality in customer service with offering delivery through the local delivering service, Doorstep Deliveries.

Rafters Restaurant & Lounge
202 Old Mammoth Rd Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546 (760) 934-9431 www.therafters.com straight from
Alan R. San Diego “Experienced three services here over Memorial Day weekend. We ate breakfast twice, which was excellent. The pulled pork “eggs Benedict” was topped with two huge, beautiful over-easy eggs. Slicing into them and seeing the hot, runny yolk fall into the perfectly seasoned pork was magic. The seasoning was spot on. I also sampled the briochestyle French toast which was absolutely beautiful. Everything that came with breakfast, from the fruit plates, to the potatoes, were freshly cooked and excellent. The excellent craft beer selections really made me excited to try lunch. I had the burger, which was cooked to a perfect medium rare, but the highlight by far, hands down, was the awesome Boston-style fish chowder. Delivered with fresh sweet shrimp, perfectly large potatoes, pancetta galore, and beautifully cooked muscles —this could be an entrée in any upscale fish joint. Bravo!”

Menu Highlights John R. Redondo Beach “Definitely make it a point to stop by Toomey’s. We ordered the CoconutMascarpone Pancakes and two coffees to go. The coffees were excellent, but the CoconutMascarpone Pancakes are why we come! They are so good and huge. The service was fast and efficient, like it always is. I was surprised that there was no line (this place should be packed) and only one couple was eating inside. The always friendly chef was chatting up the couple (he’s very friendly) and somebody else helped me. She was very efficient and I was in-and-out in two minutes. She was great in coming out from behind the counter, getting me utensils, napkins, explaining the dish to me, etc. Also, I was able to park right in front, which made the whole thing super easy.”

Toomey’s Catering and Carry-out is coined after Matt Toomey, the executive chef who worked at Whoa Nellie Deli (in the Tioga Gas Mart) for 16 years. In December 2011, Toomey decided to leave the seasonal restaurant and open his own catering service in Mammoth Lakes. Toomey’s started as just a catering and carry-out, but a few months after its grand opening, Toomey’s added some dine-in seating (both inside and outside). The restaurant is clean, warm, and quaint, and pleasant music adds to the inviting atmosphere. Meals are prepared for diners to see as Toomey and his team have nothing to hide. They’re proud to show off their work. They also provide curbside pickup, making take-away quick and easy. Toomey’s offers a wide variety of options, from breakfast to dessert. The menu has a list of “appetizers” that resemble meal-sized portions instead of small, snack-sized samplings. Breakfast goers can enjoy unique pairings such as the coconut mascarpone pancakes. If you want pancakes for dinner, that’s fine, too. Toomey’s even offers diners the option of ordering a half order (one pancake) if the portion seems too generous. For lunch or dinner, check out the carne asada tacos, angus beef sliders, or the black bean puree. Regardless of what you order, the food is bound to be exceptional. With his success and local reputation, and still wearing his Kansas City Royals cap, Toomey and his restaurant are an obvious “home run” for Mammoth Lakes. The restaurant is engulfed in baseball paraphernalia and décor. Toomey’s personal collectibles can be found lining the walls and there are references to his favorite field (Fenway Park) and his favorite team (Kansas City Royals). Toomey’s is proud to continue to share its food with Mono County visitors. Now customers don’t have to wait until the end of spring to quench their desire for lobster taquitos.
Meet the chef
Favorite local Chef Matt Toomey, most recently of Tioga Mobil Mart/ Whoa Nellie Deli fame, and crew are now serving up his signature style of fabulous fare at 80/50 next to The Village in Mammoth Lakes. Toomey went to the Tioga Mobil Mart off U.S. 395 in 2006 because he wanted to serve good food at fair prices. Toomey left the Whoa Nellie Deli to focus his attention full time at Toomey’s Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Hugh A. Mammoth Lakes “The friendliest pub/bar in Mammoth Lakes! Every time I go to the Clocktower, I meet friends that I never knew I had. The selection of real ale is topnotch, and if you’re a whiskey drinker, this is Nirvana. I met the owners and they are down-to-earth locals who are just as quick to roll up their sleeves and change a keg as they are to make sure that I’m having a good time, a good pint, and a good meal. Sitting down here is like sitting down in your local pub ... a Mammoth experience not to be missed.” Joanne B. New York “Excellent beer selection and friendly vibe. Get the tot-chos. Don’t debate it, just do it. They are awesome.”

Mammoth’s original beer and whiskey bar
Ask any local where to go for some brews after a day of skiing and more likely than not, they’ll say, “Go to the Clocktower.” A collegiate-style pub underneath the Alpenhof ’s clock tower, The Clocktower Cellar is considered Mammoth’s favorite local’s pub. With a pool table dominating a room in the back corner, and the hundreds of bottle caps decorating the ceiling, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. In 2011, owners Robert & Kirk Schaubmayer (who also own Petra’s Bistro & Wine Bar, see pg. 34) decided to expand and give The Clocktower a small facelift. They remodeled the bar in order to accommodate their new license that gave them the opportunity to serve over 150 whiskeys. The Clocktower features 26 different beers on tap, more than 50 bottled beers, and cocktails. Sound overwhelming? Don’t worry, the bartenders are knowledgeable and can help consumers choose wisely. Entertainment within the bar includes foosball, TVs, and music from its 100-disc jukebox. In 2012, Clocktower welcomed its own menu featuring “pub cuisine” with items such as tot-chos. It also features great sandwiches, fish tacos, and daily specials. The Clocktower also hosts various events throughout the year to celebrate special occasions. Check its website for announcements and updates. Stop by and experience Mammoth’s original and best multi-tap beer and whiskey bar. Good for: Dinner, late dining, nightlife

Christopher Y. Los Angeles “Good Life Cafe was pretty packed so it must be pretty good. Very extensive menu ranging from breakfast favorites to burgers and dinner entrees. Lots of choices to choose from. Good for large parties. We had a group of 13 and they split us into two tables and we didn’t have to wait very long at all. I had the crab cakes Benedict, which is a personal favorite of mine. The crab cakes were fluffy and delicious and the hollandaise light and airy. Very delicious. The wait staff is great here. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive.”

Words to live by: You are what you eat! Elizabeth R. San Juan Capistrano “This is my go-to spot for coffee, breakfast, lunch, and free wi-fi when I’m in Mammoth. The fancy coffee drinks are good if you are into ridiculously sweet coffee concoctions, but I prefer a cafe au lait. Their coffee is excellent and most of the employees know how to make good foam. The breakfast burritos are super tasty and not so ridiculously large that you feel like you weigh 900 pounds on the slopes after eating one. The sandwiches and wraps are also excellent (my fave is the Alpen Bale, even though I’m not vegan).”
Stellar Brew Natural Café strives to inspire community, health, and happiness through the service of good food and a positive atmosphere. Stellar Brew is locally grown, owned, and operated. It’s a place where your dreams begin. An epic day in the beautiful Sierra starts here with a good cup of organic brew, maybe some fresh-squeezed juice, and a home-cooked breakfast. They believe that what you put in your body is essential to your happiness, which in turn affects the happiness of those around you.
Owner spotlight Andrea Walker was born and raised in Mammoth Lakes. It is her goal to feed the community healthy food in order to create happiness and well-being. While growing up, she noticed the one thing Mammoth lacked was a good organic and nutrient-dense option at an affordable price. In school, she studied holistic nutrition and found that some people are naturally herbivores and some are naturally carnivores in order to maintain optimal health. Regardless, everyone needs the option to choose fresh, additive-free, and nutritious food. Stellar Brew is Andrea’s way of offering locals and visitors the option.

Quart Keyes Mammoth Lakes “Specializing in organic, vegan, vegetarian and glutenfree foods, The Green V has been boasted as being the first of its kind in Mammoth Lakes. In a society where everybody seems to be allergic to something this café offers a healthy and allergy conscious alternative. As for the food, if you can handle a little spice, I am totally digging (as in “digging your curry”) the Potato Spinach Curry. It is the perfect yellow curry flavor in a hearty meal. I found myself going back to eat this between bites of everything else I was trying. The Thai Noodle Salad was awesome. The sesame seeds pulls this dish together! Yummy. The Pearly Barley and Edamame Salad was also something to come back for. Although I am allergic to soy beans, this salad had an incredible texture with the perfect zingy flavor.”

It was fun talking to the chef and he sent us some tasty samples while we were waiting for our entrées. My boyfriend got the pork lo mein, which he loved. We split the pork dumplings made special for Chinese New Year and they were yummy. They were handmade and I wish we got more than five. I got the crispy tofu with soy, mirin and white truffle sauce. My friend got the shu mei and like the pork dumplings, which were also handmade and delicious! We were super happy with our experience at Red Lantern. History
Rafters Restaurant & Lounge owners Jim and Nancy Demetriades have an equal passion for two things: Mammoth Lakes and food. After purchasing and turning Rafters into a world-class restaurant (see pg. 14), the couple turned to the Mammoth community members and asked what they were craving. “Chinese,” said Jim. “The answer that came back over and over again was a Chinese restaurant.” But not just any old Chinese food was going to do. It was going to have to be affordable and delicious. “People underestimate the clientele here too often,” Jim said. “Mammoth is a demanding environment. It’s a sophisticated group of both locals and visitors and they know what good food is. And they deserve it.” The couple hired a staff and gave them a mission: To find the best, freshest ingredients possible, seafood brought in daily from the coast, fresh vegetables, olive oil whenever possible, no MSG, and for all the dishes to be made from scratch. “We wanted to introduce something that hasn’t existed here before,” Jim said. “The community wanted it and we wanted to give the community a quality Asian experience. We don’t know of any high quality, Takeout: Yes Delivery: No Children’s menu: Yes Wi-Fi: No Happy Hour: Yes
made from scratch, reasonably priced Chinese restaurants. They’re unheard of. Even in big cities,” Jim said. “Restaurants with expensive plates? Sure. But we wanted to offer healthy, affordable Chinese food.” In addition to fine, sit-down dining, the Red Lantern also offers take out. “The goal is to have people order meals from their smart phones,” Jim said. “You can be on the mountain, place an order on your phone, and then pick it up after you’re done skiing.”

In the quest to provide an exceptional dining experience, the couple did not overlook the importance of effective ambiance. “The other thing I really believe in, besides really good food, is the importance of a beautiful environment,” Jim said. “People want to be in a place that is rich, textured, and that makes them feel comfortable.” Nancy took over the decoration of the interior, bringing in rich textiles and deep colors; a vivid reminder of a green lush world far from the sage and lofty granite spires of Mammoth. The result is truly beautiful—light, color, and shape melding together in elegant balance. Vegetarian/vegan: Yes Parking: Private lot Hours: Open daily from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

New chef, new menu, old idea Tammy B. Redondo Beach “Some friends and I had an unbelievable experience at The Lakefront Restaurant in Mammoth. The atmosphere is very quaint and romantic and the staff makes you feel right at home with outstanding service. They apparently have hired a new chef and just launched a new menu that is full of some very yummy food! We started with appetizers—the Baked Goat Cheese was to die for and the Negroni Cocktail (which was a smoked sturgeon with salmon gravlax) was melt in your mouth amazing! I had the Alper’s Smoked Trout Cake for my main entrée and I have to say, I’ve never tasted anything quite like it. One of my friends had the Sea Scallops and loved, loved, loved them. If you are in Mammoth and are looking for some exquisite food in a really charming place, The Lakefront Restaurant is the place to go. My husband and I are going back to Mammoth for Thanksgiving and I can’t wait to take him there!”

Casual Fine Dining
A delightful and friendly restaurant with a wine bar tucked on a busy street just across from the Village Gondola, Petra’s Bistro & Wine Bar offers up some of the finest dining in the area and an excellent wine selection. Petra’s has been part of Mammoth’s escalating dining experience since 2003, offering California style cuisine with European influences. It is the only restaurant in Mammoth Lakes with a seasonally evolving menu. A locals’ favorite, Petra’s offers 28 wines by the glass and over 350 wines by the bottle. Petra’s uses fresh regional and seasonal ingredients in every entrée. The wild mushroom soup and baked brie are house favorites; begin with them before following up with the scallops or prosciutto-wrapped pork, paired with a fine vino by the knowledgeable staff. Owned by local brothers Kirk and Robert Schaubmayer (who also own The Clocktower, see pg. 20), the restaurant is casual fine dining at its best. With daily menu changes under the direction of Chef Jesse Romero, the stage is set for Wine Director Mitch Cahoon and the knowledgeable staff, including three certified sommeliers, to present the most progressive wine program in the area. Petra’s wines are offered by half and full glass from Mammoth’s only Cruvinet, a wine preservation system that keeps wines as fresh as the moment they are uncorked. When making reservations (which are highly recommended during weekends in the winter), ask for a table near the huge fireplace. Petra’s is Mammoth’s favorite hot spot where food, friends, and wine come together. Takeout: No Delivery: No Children’s menu: Yes Wi-Fi: No Happy Hour: Yes

Jimmy’s Taverna
248 Old Mammoth Rd Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546 (760) 934-9432 www.jimmystaverna.com
Menu highlights
Greek cuisine has a long tradition and its flavors change with the season and its geography. It has influences from the different cuisines the Greeks have interacted with over the centuries, as evidenced by several types of sweets and cooked foods. Greek cookery, historically a forerunner of Western cuisine, spread its culinary influence (via ancient Rome) throughout Europe and beyond—and it has finally reached Mammoth Lakes. Jimmy’s Taverna is Mammoth Lakes’ newest restaurant brought to you by Jim and Nancy Demetriades, owners of Sierra Nevada Lodge, Red Lantern (p. 28), and Rafters Restaurant & Lounge (pg. 14). The couple takes pride in utilizing the freshest premium ingredients and finest of foods available, while serving authentic Greek cuisine in the ambiance of an intimate and gorgeous Mediterranean setting. When dining at Jimmy’s Taverna, visitors can appreciate the sense of being in the Mediterranean, yet enjoy the incredible view of the Sherwins at the same time. The couple’s ambition is the educate customers on the delights of Greek cooking and therefore have comprised a menu of authentic Greek recipes. Hospitality is the centerpiece of traditional Greek culture, and at Jimmy’s Taverna, diners will enjoy a unique dining experience that encompasses Mediterranean flare with Eastern Sierra.
An intimate setting
What’s a taverna? A taverna refers to a small restaurant serving Greek cuisine. A taverna has a unique menu that focuses on certain specialties and are mostly for nighttime, long meals, lots of wine, and conversation. The taverna has become an integral part of Greek culture and has become familiar to people from other countries who visit Greece and through the establishment of tavernas overseas by expatriate Greeks. Jim and Nancy Demetriades wanted to offer Mammoth visitors and locals an intimate escape during stormy winter nights or a place to relax after a long summer’s day of hiking, kayaking, or biking. There’s no better place to go for fabulous food with a cozy and comfortable environment.

Molly D. Agoura Hills, CA “We were looking for some good food and found it at CJ’s. The rustic cabin feel of the restaurant makes you feel at home and the friendly staff is more than welcoming. Our picky 6-year-old enjoyed the home style mac ’n cheese, which says a lot! I really liked the pulled pork sandwich with a side of Amish coleslaw. It was not overly spicy or slathered in sauce, letting the flavors shine through.” Robert K. Los Angeles “I split the ‘catch of the day,’ which was red snapper with steamed veggies with my wife. We had a side caesar and split the flourless lava cake with mint-chip ice cream for dessert. I was impressed by the waiter’s knowledge and sensitivity to gluten intolerance. She reassured us of the purity of everything on the menu, and we were not disappointed.”

Menu highlights
The menu includes the type of food you wish you could cook at home: delicious, deceptively simple, and sensibly priced. Everything at CJ’s is made from scratch; you won’t find those gallon jars of pre-made sauces and dressings anywhere in their kitchen. In addition, if you are gluten sensitive or have food allergies, you’ll find you can safely dine here, and dine well. There’s an item on the menu called Cincinnati Chili that includes seasonings like cinnamon and chocolate. It is served three different ways: in a bowl, on top of spaghetti, or on a hot dog. Or try the Amish coleslaw. It is a sweet and tangy change to your normal mayonnaise smothered slaw. Even a simple burger and fries will leave your taste buds delighted and satisfied. Carrie and Jason, owners of CJ’s Grill, look to their son, Jason Jr., as their resident expert on the children’s menu, which includes mac ’n cheese and homemade apple sauce. If it passes muster with Jason Jr., it goes on the kids’ menu at CJ’s Grill—kid-approved and mom-friendly. Do not leave CJ’s without sampling Jason’s cheesecake. If you are an out-of-towner, come back in the fall when he makes his delicious pumpkin cheesecake. CJ’s brings a warm and welcoming ambience with a slightly rustic feel to Mammoth Lakes— reminiscent of the old Swiss Café. Carrie and Jason’s aim is to cater to the local population— their extended “Mammoth family”—as well as to welcome visitors. To them, good food and excellent service are paramount, so come and sit down, order a bottle or a glass from their extensive wine list and relax after a day of outdoor fun. Then savor one of their appetizers with an ice-cold draft beer—perhaps the famous hot soft pretzel bites? You’ll find yourself echoing the CJ’s Grill motto, “Tastes good to me.”
Meet the owners Jason graduated from Mammoth High School and attended college in Louisiana. Drawn by the lure of Florida’s weather and waters, he took a job working for Outback Steakhouse where he met Carrie, a native of Pittsburgh. She too heard Florida’s (and Jason’s) siren song and fell in love. But Florida isn’t Mammoth, and after a few vacations, Jason was homesick and Carrie was hooked. The couple decided to have their wedding in June Lake. For a few years, Carrie worked as department head of Mountainside Grill while both she and Jason held on to the dream of one day owning their own restaurant. When the location that formerly housed The Fireside Burgers & Tap became available, they jumped at the chance. The bartenders will put pretty much anything into hot cocoa for you (try butterscotch schnapps or peppermint schnapps), which is the perfect end to a day of skiing. The bar is also a fabulous place to relax and have a glass of wine while listening to some music and watching snow fall outside the windows.”
Located at the slope’s edge, inside the Mammoth Mountain Inn, the Mountainside Grill provides an alpine ambiance that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks. The menus are ALL NEW this season, so make a reservation to dine underneath the vaulted cabin ceiling, or cozy up on some of the leather-wrapped lounge seating in the Dry Creek Bar. Smokeyard BBQ and Chop Shop
The Village 1111 Forest Trail Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546 (760) 934-3300 www.smokeyard.com straight from
Kate P. Carlsbad “The smell coming out of the smokers back in the kitchen was mouth watering. We were seated and quickly attended by the now-famous waiter, Joey, who certainly lived up to his reviews. Beef Combo with the Smokeyard BBQ sauce and a side of mango-habanero Garlic Mash: the ribs were succulent and gigantic. This is seriously more meat than any person can expect to eat in one sitting. Safta’s Chicken Soup: nice homemade chicken soup. The parsnips are my favorite.”
Menu highlights Smokeyard BBQ and Chop Shop is known as Mammoth’s best BBQ and steakhouse. House favorites include crispy mozzarella sticks, the incredible Smokeyard Burger, delicious BBQ Ribs, and 16 oz. Double Cut Pork Chops. All ribs are spice rubbed and smoked until they’re tender with a choice of one of three uniquely made BBQ sauces: Smokeyard BBQ, Sweet Chili, or Mango-Habanero. The menu ranges from BBQ entrees and burgers, to thin crust pizzas and seafood. The owners, Alon and Guy Ravid, grew up in South Africa before moving to Mammoth Lakes and opening the restaurant in the Village. Far from being bland, South African delicacies can be traced to European and Asian roots and the brothers bring a lot of South African influences to their dishes. In addition to a variety of BBQ options found on Smokeyard’s menu, the Ravid brothers included other African specialties, such as Potjiekos. Potjiekos, which translates as small pot food, is a stew traditionally prepared outside in a cast iron cauldron with three legs. At Smokeyard, it’s made with tender Beef, Tomatoes, Onions, Carrots, Mushrooms, and Potatoes; and is served over a traditional yellow rice. Smokeyard prides itself in accommodating its guests and all dietary preferences. In addition to an eclectic, wide-ranging menu, Smokeyard offers various vegetarian dishes and gluten-free options. All of its BBQ sauces are made with distilled vinegar and all BBQ & Chop Shop items may be prepared gluten-free.

Fatn F. San Diego “I had an awesome experience here! After we promptly received our drinks, we were able to enjoy a salad bar right away. The bread was also very soft and warm. The waiter cooked our fish for us, which was unexpected but they knew exactly when it would come out. The grill was in our view but it wasn’t an eye sore. I actually liked it. As I took a bite of this moist, flaky Halibut, I could not believe how tender this fish was. It tasted so fresh like they had caught it an hour before we arrived. I would recommend this to anyone and I will be back the next time I travel to Mammoth.” Good for: Dinner Price Range: $$ Reservations: Yes Accepts credit cards: All Liquor served: Full bar

Menu highlights
The Mogul offers the largest variety of steaks in Mammoth Lakes. The restaurant offers prime rib, steaks, fresh fish, seafood, pork tenderloin, lamb, chicken, a salad bar, and a kid’s menu. The slow-cooked prime rib has become an all-time favorite over the years. Daily fresh fish specials are also very popular among restaurant goers, and the healthy and fresh salad bar is praised for its many options. The Mogul takes pride in accommodating any and all appetites—big or small. Smaller dinners are available for lighter eaters and diners may also make their own combinations. All of the steaks and fresh fish are grilled to perfection on the broiler located in the center of the restaurant. A full bar and fine wines are also available for customers to enjoy.
Celebrating 41 years
The Mogul is celebrating more than 41 years in Mammoth Lakes. The Mogul’s unique and memorable reputation is owed to a practice it offered to diners when the restaurant opened in 1971: Letting diners cook their own steak on the charbroilers in the dining room. Today—with a much expanded menu—the restaurant’s servers become your personal grill chef so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the warm mountain ambiance with great food and friendly service.
Meet the owner
Carey Sigmen, the third owner in 41 years, is no stranger to the food and beverage industry. He started his career bussing tables in 1983. Carey then worked as a server for many years, eventually becoming the manager. In 1998, he bought The Mogul from long-time owner Dan Haydon. Today, Carey can be seen greeting customers and making sure they have a quality experience. Be sure to stop by and say, “Hi,” the next time you’re in town! Specialties Editor’s note: Campo in Mammoth Lakes opened its doors to the public after this publication went to print. Since the Mammoth location hasn’t been reviewed yet, the following review is from the Campo located in Reno (same owner). Jessica P. Reno “This was my second visit to Campo, and after the last time I couldn’t stop thinking about their kale salad. Tonight we had the chef ’s tasting menu for $50 each. Amazing experience. We started with a roasted beet served on a bed of creme fraiche and topped with arugula. Second course was the unforgettable kale salad with a poached egg on top. The next course was my favorite; a plate of creamy polenta with delicious marinated mushrooms and two different cheese wedges. I think one was gorgonzola and the other might have been some kind of crouton? Anyway, it was delicious.”

The lunch special (small two-item pizza with soup or salad) has been a local tradition since nearly the beginning. “Our incredible staff has also progressed with us—offering great, friendly service,” John said. “More than 2/3 of our staff have been with us for more than five years, which is amazing for this industry and this town. We also have a few staff members more than 10 years, and one more than 20!” “We truly consider them family and do our best to take care of them so they can take great care of the guests.”

Others around me had the teriyaki chicken, and someone ordered the spicy albacore roll. Both were very tasty. Everyone in our group was happy with their food. Good job, Shogun!”

A touch of Japan
East meets west in the High Sierra as Shogun Japanese Restaurant and Yamatani Japanese Restaurant bring a touch of Japan to Mammoth Lakes and Bishop, respectively. Shogun and Yamatani offer an assortment of traditional Japanese foods such as tempura, chicken and beef teriyaki, sukiyaki and, of course, sushi. Shogun, established in 1980 and remodeled in November 2012, is Mammoth’s first sushi bar. After 25 years of success, the owners expanded and opened Yamatani in Bishop in 2005. A full-service cocktail lounge with imported beers, hot and cold sake compliment every meal at both locations.
Cultural history
Traditionally, Japanese food is fresh, healthy, and low in fat. The Japanese believe food should satisfy all the senses. Food is always prepared with great care using the freshest ingredients at both Shogun and Yamatani restaurants. In keeping with Japanese tradition, seasonings are generally very simple in order to enhance the natural flavors.

Sushi Rei + Noodle Bar
The Village At Mammoth 6201 Minaret Rd Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546 (760) 934-0774 straight from
Jeff C. South Lake Tahoe “Sushi is one of my favorite foods. This place was killer. Presentation of the food was excellent! Highly recommend this place. The servers are very friendly. A+” Lauren K. Gardena, CA “Maybe it was because we were famished after a full, fun day of snowboarding, but just about everything we ordered at Sushi Rei was mighty delicious! The hamachi (yellowtail), spicy tuna, and unagi (eel) rolls were too addicting for me. They all tasted so fresh! I also loved how quickly we were served and that the chefs made our rolls right in front of us. You could see how much care they put in to making them. I know that the next time I go to Mammoth, I’ll not only look forward to snowboarding, but I will definitely look forward to eating at Sushi Rei again, as well.”

Mammoth Brewing Tasting Room
94 Berner St., Unit B Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546 (760) 934-7141 www.mammothbrewingco.com straight from
Sheryce S. Rancho Cordova, CA “Had a great time tasting here. Two options for tasting: Traditional (9 tastings for $4) or the Seasonal (5 tastings for $5). Either is a great deal. Tastings are quite large. I opted for the traditional since I had never tried any of their offerings. My favorite was the Hefeweizen. I loved the innovative names, too—after the area and people of Mammoth. They have a lot of cool merchandise as well. You can buy bottled beer or bring your growler to fill up.” Dub M. San Diego “These guys have done a really nice job over the years and like a fine wine, get better with age. The current line-up is extensive and there always seems to be a fresh seasonal in the works. Big fan of the red they brew for Tahoe and 395 IPA of course. The newly expanded tasting room is top notch and the staff is always friendly and helpful.”

History
Mammoth Brewing Company was founded by Sam Walker in 1995 and is currently owned by Sean and Joyce Turner. What makes Mammoth Brewing Company beer unique is that at 8,000 feet, water boils at 198 degrees Fahrenheit, rather than 212 degrees at sea level, resulting in a softer flavor profile during the brewing process. Also at 8,000 feet, the mountain water the company uses is as pure as it gets. In order to accommodate visitors and beer enthusiasts, Mammoth Brewing Company expanded its tasting room in late 2011. The brewery invites the public to taste any (and all) of the beers it brews, and then encourages visitors to frequent local restaurants and bars where they could find Mammoth Brewery Company beers on tap. MBC does not offer any food, except for pretzels to cleanse the palate before trying another beer. Among the beers the MBC brews, it is best known for its Epic IPA, IPA 395, Double Nut Brown, and the quarterly seasonals the company regularly releases. Be sure to ask for the latest bourbon-barrel aged beers.
Awards
MBC has been winning awards since 1996. Its most recent and prestigious awards were at
the 2012 World Beer Cup, with a gold medal for its Double Nut Brown Porter in the Brown Porter Category and a bronze for its Real McCoy Amber Ale in German Style Brown/ Dusseldorf-Style Altbier Category.
Highlights
Mammoth Brewing Company has more than tripled in size since 2005 and produced 5,165 brewers barrels (“bbls”) in 2011. Plans are in progress to build a new production brewery in the Eastern Sierra to give MBC the ability to produce 150,000 bbls annually. Mammoth Brewing Company is a multiple award-winning brewery with current distribution only in the Eastern Sierra, Yosemite National Park and the Reno/Tahoe/ Truckee markets. MBC beers are not currently available in the Southern California markets.
Insider tips
The tasting room specializes in educating consumers about the craft beer industry in general. Plan on about a 30-minute tour of beers! Come before 3 p.m. to beat the crowds. Kids are welcome. They can taste-test the non-alcoholic Imperial Root Beer!
