owever, I wasn’t. A caveat: do not implore me. It was my break-in climb after an 8-month hiatus, and hence, mine was a body out of shape. Bad mountaineer, you might say. Yet, the force of being in the middle of ascending slopes with trees hovering, and being able to breathe fresh air to detoxify the body regularly enveloped by frigid office air-conditioning was strong. This had to be done—I had to climb; I had to get away. So when my group, the Loyola Mountaineers, presented a rough itinerary of a 3-day climb in Mindanao for Mt. Lumot-Sumagaya, I had to grab the chance. It didn’t matter that I had to book a flight at the last minute and inform the other climbers that I’d be joining at the last minute as well. “Freedom, finally!” I thought. Obviously, I paid little attention to the itinerary, being too absorbed with the idea of flying away to a different place. When my climb buddies and I were in Cagayan de Oro to buy supplies for the trek, details started to clear up. Mt. LumotSumagaya was actually two mountains that we would traverse in the next three days. That’s Mt. Lumot and Mt. Sumagaya for you, smarty. All the while, I thought it was just a fancy, complicated name for a mountain. With a bit of moaning, and some self-blame (that’s what you get for being too spontaneous, hah), I told the other mountaineers, “Let’s go white-water rafting instead!” I hopped on the bus to Ginoog City, Misamis Oriental anyway. When in doubt... From Ginoog City, it takes an estimated half-hour habal-habal (Mindanaoan term for

motorcycle) ride to the foot of Mt. Lumot, depending on the mercy of the unpaved roads and the expertise of the habal-habal driver. It was an overcast morning, and the grounds told of a drizzly night. Good thing, my habal companion, Paco, chose an alpha-malelooking driver; thus, we had a semi-smooth journey to the jump-off point. Two of our friends, Pappy and Gyobs, weren’t as lucky, for their driver had legs that couldn’t touch the ground for balance, causing their motorcycle to tumble three times in the muddy areas. Gyobs had even burned his leg on the muffler. My white-water rafting alternative wasn’t such a bad suggestion after all, I mused. Trek star, start trek! By the foot of Mt. Lumot stands upright a shrine for the fatal Flight 387 crash in 1998. It is hallowed ground; thus, my tiny complaints were temporarily muted. To quote Kian from his online post about the climb, “We tread these grounds with respect to their sad fate to proliferate our lives where they

unfortunately lost theirs.” After a quiet moment, a prayer, and an appreciation for life, our foray into the forest began. The trail unfolded to be familiar, having characteristics similar to other mountains in Mindanao from my recollection. It was nature’s warm welcome: wild mushrooms abounded, and everywhere, moss carpeted the ground and wrapped the trees. If you’re lucky, a monkey might even surprise you along the way. Though the terrain wasn’t alien to me, the fitness level that I used to have, unfortunately, was. Good thing we were preoccupying ourselves with ordinarily corny yet amusing word association games to divert our attention from the challenge that the mountain presented to us (or to me, at least.) The more dense the forest grew, the less visible the trail became. Fallen tree trunks in varying giant proportions slowly replaced soil for trekking ground. Paco, who led the pack, eventually kept a 30-meter distance from me. Since he and the trail were hidden from sight most of the time, I had to

I want to be a mountaineer: tips for the first-timer 1. Find mountaineering groups. While exploring the wild sounds adventurous, ultimately, it can be dangerous. There are various mountaineering clubs in schools and the workplace that can provide not just invaluable knowledge, but also lend equipment and provide companionship during climbs. Check out the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines’ website for the list: www.mfpi.org. 2. Train, I’m told. It’s always smart to condition oneself physically and psychologically before climbing. For endurance, try jogging on uphill roads and/or long-distance running.

Mt. Lumot-Sumagaya in Misamis Oriental rewards the physically fit

The final ascent to Mt. Sumagaya’s summit proved this further, as the trail became harsher and temperatures started dropping lower by the hour. I tried being less conscious of the difficulty, and started to marvel at the beauty of the mountain. By the ridge of Mt. Sumagaya, a bird revealed itself, gracefully gliding, showing the blue underside of its wings to the lowly spectators. Then, with most of the journey behind us, I was reminded why I climb.

Camp While some might disagree, I believe the most enjoyable part of any mountain-climbing experience is the camping. There’s nothing quite like soiled and sweaty trekking clothes stripped off for cleaner ones, and the overfilled 42-liter backpack off the shoulders. Also, our group liked to eat gourmet food at the peak, so we have celebrated the night with pasta and wine. (The term “gourmet” is volatile, as we classify any unprocessed and un-canned food “gourmet”. Since one can’t be really choosy when high up there, we try to be creative with our culinary repertoire most of the time.) In tents, secrets, gossip, and ghost stories alike are shared. I am weak-hearted when discussions about our “spirited” friends surface; even doubly horrified then, since Mt. Lumot was a crash site. Cernan found this fear an object of his amusement, subjecting me to his personal accounts of the aftermath. However horrifying were the tales of past (i.e., body parts furled and burnt beyond recognition) and present (i.e., intact flight steward’s uniform standing a few meters away from the campsite), they were eventually helpful in making me hike faster the next two days. Night trekking wasn’t part of my plans.

could have been prevented. In the area, all trees, except for one, were cut midway, and on the ground, shoe soles and a life vest were sporadically scattered. My mountaineer friends became armchair forensic scientists, discussing the altitudes in mountains and the vacuuming activity that may have caused the tragedy. It was humbling, not just to realize how smart my friends are, but more so, how small and frail we are in the face of nature’s force.

shout his name, or alternately, “QQ ,” to check if I was still going in the right direction. (A few years back, we have learned from our longtime Mindanao mountain guide, Cernan, that ‘Q’ is the highest pitched letter in the alphabet, making it for a whistle substitute.) After a lot of Q’s and a few expletives, we all reached our campsite before the sky was dark. The suggested itinerary was in order. Good job, I thought. I still have it in me.

3. Look up, not down. It pays to pay attention to nature’s charm, not just to the rocky/mossy/ muddy trail. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll find. 4. Leave no trace. Always remember that we are guests, so be gracious and clean up after yourself. When trekking, try to follow the trail so as to lessen the impact on the mountain. 5. Just go! Leave your apprehensions behind, and enjoy the ride. There’s nothing like seeing the sun rise and set in a sea of clouds.

he name is self-determining— we will doodle!—tempered by a hint of cuteness, as suggested by the extra letter e in Wee. But behind their big-eyed childlike doodles that call to mind elements of Japanese animé and Simone Legno’s Tokidoki, Wee Will Doodle is a well-oiled art/business machine that has made a distinct mark on the scene and has achieved quite a lot, especially for a group that is just pushing two years old. There is, of course, their in-event collaboration with Legno during last year’s Grafika Manila, an impressive feat that included the Italian artist appraising WWD’s body of work first, and then agreeing to draw alongside them. Then there was that feature by international news agency Reuters, also from last year. “That was something else,” WWD’s Nelz Yumul recalls. “The Reuters people went to our doodle events, to our workplaces, to our mock studio…it was pretty exciting. They uploaded the video into their website and aired it in New Zealand, though we didn’t get to watch it.” Add to these the brands and corporations that have commissioned the group to doodle on their merchandise and their walls. It’s a portfolio a struggling visual artist can only dream of. Most people can doodle: a few squiggles, a few flourishes added to a basic geometric shape, a facsimile of a face. But with the cohesiveness of the artworks churned out by WWD, works that can flow from one end of a wall to another, it is almost a wonder how a group of artists can doodle together simultaneously and come up with something that is compact and commercially pleasing. Member Julius Sebastian explains the group dynamic: “We’ve known each other for

quite some time, so we have gotten familiar with the individual styles. There is respect for each artist’s space, for example, on the area where we’d be doodling, and there is also an understanding of the strengths of each member: one of us is great at doing characters while another one has mastered how to make the doodles flow, another one’s expertise is shading, and so on.” It also helps that the ten or so WWD core members all have backgrounds or day jobs that involve visual design and illustration. Yumul, for example, works in graphic design for a TV network while Sebastian is a web designer. “We work as art directors as well, so each of us has an idea on how to make the individual doodles flow and work together,” Yumul says. “We do have a secret formula for making our work cohesive, though. We haven’t really sat down and discussed what that unwritten law is, but it’s there, and it gets everyone to jive in the end.” There are technical pointers that the members

follow, “funny little stuff that we picked up through our previous works,” Sebastian describes. For example, a doodle shouldn’t have too many straight lines, because it’s hard to doodle around those. The same goes for dotted lines. “It’s these little things that we realize only as we work, and what makes our doodle eventsmanual fun is our awareness that we can improve our system every time.” At first glance, a WWD piece calls to mind cutesy Japanese characters, especially the simplistic infantile features found on both human and animal characters. But on closer examination, there is actually a diverse mix of styles: little boys with very Pinoy stubbed noses, mini-warriors with Mexican wrestler masks, stick figure robots with slashes for features, goofy-looking animals with overbites, monsters with dreamy expressions, and a whole lot more. And that is just on one doodling project. A closer inspection of WWD’s works would reveal that the group’s work is dynamic,

and not one work is similar to another. In fact, experimentation is highly encouraged within the group, so that a member who’d be interested to dabble in, say, pointillism in his doodles would be given free reign in his work. “We have done sexy, adult-oriented doodles. We’ve also worked with clients that required very child-friendly doodles that should feature no violent element at all, even just a cartoon skull,” says Yumul. “That is why we strive to evolve every time, because we’ll never know, maybe tomorrow, people would be sick of what we do. Tastes change, and so we try to be prepared for that.” Though the group is unabashed to admit that they nurture the commercial side of their work, there are still principles that they follow regarding commissioned work. Though WWD is quite open to innovative projects and collaborations (their clientele has spanned food and beverage establishments, toy brands, and even a mattress brand), they have refused work that is usually quite obvious and natural for other design groups to fall into. Yumul recounts, “We were supposed to work with a clothing brand, but it fell through because we had a misunderstanding about how the two groups would work together. We’re not like the usual commercial illustrators, where the work would be passed back and forth between us and the client for multiple revisions.” As doodling is the end-all and be-all of WWD’s work, the group stands behind the idea that doodling should be unself-conscious, its essence stemming from it being done in free form. “We do have a formula and bank of characters,” Sebastian admits, “but with doodling, in general, making even a small revision would change everything.” “We’d rather that you give is all the provisions and conditions, we’ll work around those, we’d give you a number of studies, and then you choose about half of them for you to select from,” adds Yumul. Due to their popularity, it’s inevitable that WWD would get heat from certain circles in the art community that are against blatant commercialism. Yumul admits, “There are those who have branded us as sell outs, yes. When we go to exhibits and other art gatherings, we do get some sideway looks, but we just shrug them off.” Still, the group takes it in stride, as the reactions to their success have not been all bad. “I’d say it’s been half and half,” says Yumul. “I think the art community has become more open to those who want to take care of the commercial side of the craft. I mean, let’s be honest, we’d all like to earn money from our work in order to live. It’s just up to the artist how to balance his craft with commerce. “I think that with those who look down on us, they know that the work we do is so basic, but it’s just that we did it first,” Yumul says with a laugh. The difference between WWD’s work and that of graffiti artists, he explains, is that they have been able to create a brand that can be used on different merchandise. “There’s a part of our work that is rooted in graffiti. Before, the general perception for graffiti art is that it can’t be branded. Now, though, some graffiti artists are also trying to break into the commercial art scene by reintroducing characters that they used to tag on walls. It’s kind of weird.” He further explains that while some graffiti artists might say that WWD members are not street artists, the group has never really made claims to be such, though they have been tagged by some as street artists, since their work counts as street art—doodles on public spaces, and all that. “And street art is borderline graffiti art. But with graffiti, the works

Hands up if you’ve watched the following: Afro Ninja, the Numa Numa Guy, Ryan vs. Dorkman, or gay teenybopper Chris Crocker imploring “Leave Britney Alone!” are anonymous; with WWD, we don’t try or even want to remain anonymous. All of our works are oriented towards developing our brand.” An advantage of applying business principles on their work is that commissioned projects don’t stop coming in, largely due to good client relations that WWD has fostered. “We’ve been very fortunate that we don’t have to beg or whore ourselves out for work; it’s the work that comes to us,” Sebastian states. WWD has a distinct incomegenerating part, as well as a part that advocates art among the youth. Though Yumul functions as the primary project manager for the group, each member is encouraged to try their hand out at the role, along with the different responsibilities of keeping the WWD brand running smoothly. Yumul says, “I believe it’s possible to spread your message about creativity, even if you’re a full-on commercial artist.” WWD does talks on creativity and doodle sessions in different schools, and the group plans to do more of these this year. An upcoming advocacy project will be with the organization Kaibigan ng mga Kabataang May Cancer, to be held in Iloilo, and there are also plans for an exhibit in Baguio in March, plus art talks in different universities that are all gratis. While the group runs a fairly tight ship on the business side, WWD also play enablers to nonmembers who want to share in on the fun. “If you see us doodling on a wall, feel free to join us,” Sebastian invites. “You don’t have sneak in a

doodle on the side; we’d even give you markers.“ Just as they freely embraced the concept of making a business out of their creativity, the group believes that art shouldn’t be closed off to the plebeian masses. “Especially doodling—it’s the most basic art form.” ? Scientists and experts have predicted serious repercussions if we do not act now to prevent further climate change. By Miguel Paolo Celestial

Awareness has spread apprehension like invisible plankton. Not undeservedly, given the possible scenarios, to wit: Extreme weather that may mean worse or more frequent storms, floods, droughts, and heatwaves; the spread of diseases; drier deserts and wetter tropics tantamount to the reduction of arable land and therefore food; melting Arctic and Antarctic glaciers and mountain caps that could lead to higher sea levels and submerged cities; and the warming of the oceans that could cause the loss of habitats and the displacement or endangerment of species. There may never have been a vision as apocalyptic as what experts have predicted. Worse than Nostradamus? Yet the real question is, has the world responded with the same zeal

as researchers and scientists? Have we faced this iceberg of a problem with much more weighing below the surface? Sincerity has no half-life To prevent impending catastrophe, scientists have proposed a concerted reduction of emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases through four means: using alternative or renewable sources of energy; being more efficient with energy usage; collecting or capturing carbon, methane, and other gases for storage or combustion; and preventing more deforestation. Of these four, only the first two seem relevant to the ordinary citizen. First, with the insatiable rise of fuel prices, the prospect

t seems no matter what we do, we end up damaging the environment: With the turn of a car key, a flick of a light switch, the click of a mouse, one press to dispense ice from the fridge, or a quick turn of the shower knob. The only thing left is for everybody to be penalized for hyperventilating and exhaling too much CO2 from worrying about the climate. Everything leaves a carbon footprint, they say. Al Gore has spoken and the Swedish Academy and the rest of the world have thanked him–slideshow, clout, and all–for help in pointing it out. “Finally!” cried the scientists, their sighs recalling polar bears swimming across icecaps, burning off fat, but without hope of reaching receding land.

“You could save electricity by not leaving your TV on standby, because you don’t really need to leave your TV on standby. But then again, standby mode adds functionality and improves the user experience. You could save electricity by watching less TV. You could just stop watching TV, and go for a run. Better yet plant some trees. You’d get some exercise, you’d save electricity, you’d help the carbon/oxygen balance and you’d feel good about yourself…” All it suggests is that every single sheet of environmentally friendly tissue doesn’t seem enough to wipe away our oily excess.

bags, and shoes to packaging, furniture, and automobiles, this ethic has been echoed. Down with extravagance! Welcome to the dawn of the new responsible lifestyle! But how much can we really do, are we really doing, through feedbags and organic or recyclable materials of which production, according to some recent studies at least, actually require more carbon emissions than the usual plastic? Are we really saving enough energy by installing a bed of plants on our roofs to lessen the need for air conditioning? Are we being friendly to the environment by buying another dress or pair of trousers made from organic materials and dyed organically when, to begin with, our closets do not need additional pieces for at least the next few seasons? Maybe we are merely buying into a trend to ease our consumerist consciences. Or we are probably bored with our leather bags and want more synthetics and canvas. A new and nifty car to get ahead of the Joneses? A better question: Aren’t we still pressing too many buttons of too many appliances and gadgets that we have so gotten used to that we don’t dare question their necessity? This is partially answered by gogreen. theconsortium.co.uk, a blog about “eco-friendly business”:

The fashion industry is his playground, in which he contributes as a stylist and a photographer, and he can also be spotted DJing in the clubs. Most of the time, though, he prefers to lay back at home and go online, or play with his dog. Samonte is known for his highly creative and authentic style. When asked to define his personal style, he answers, “I can’t [define it] because it’s just a mix and mismatch of everything: magulo, basura…whatever! Though he looks like a card-carrying member of the Harajuku cult, he is a hundred percent Pinoy who just loves to express himself in an imaginative and fearless manner. He is not trying to make a statement; that is just how he is. As for the wow factor in his style, “it could be ‘Wow, ganda!’ or ‘Wow, chaka!’ As long as the ‘wow’ exists, I’m happy.” Samonte’s look is the sum total of his inner artist and his style inspirations, which include the late Isabella Blow, Anna Piaggi, and Cecille Van Straten. On how he pulls off his attires: “I start with any single piece that I see in the closet then I mix and mismatch everything.” Most of his clothes are from designer friends Gian Romano, Geof Gonzales, and Mike Lavarez. He also scores a lot of good finds in ukay-ukay shops, which he usually deconstructs and reworks. Clothes are valued by each person differently, but for Samonte, “clothes are my skin. of shifting from gasoline to biofuel seems more and more tempting, even if a majority of motorists remain shy of hybrid electric vehicles or fuel-cell cars that run on hydrogen, much more those modified to combust used cooking oil. We are stuck with this initiative since use of other sources of energy are only up to electricity suppliers (wind, hydroelectric, and nuclear power), a matter of technology (biomass), or still too expensive for ordinary retail customers (solar energy). The second solution to prevent catastrophe– conserving energy–has not only served as fodder for activist and media campaigns, but also as inspiration for the latest runway fashions. IMAGE COUTESY OF LOUIS VUITTON

For Spring-Summer 2009, Louis Vuitton revisits classic men’s tailoring, drawing on the brand’s 158-year heritage in a fresh, modern spirit with its main inspiration from Charlie Chaplin. Menswear Studio Designer Paul Helbers shares, “For this new collection, we wanted considered fluidity: something less formal, more fragile, but without compromising one button on luxury.” The season’s color highlight of choice gravitates on the rose spectrum but tempered with a hint of masculinity.

Jobelle Tayawa: Hi Gorgoro! Are you there? Gorgoro: Hello. JT: Ok wait, how am I sure that you’re really Gorgoro and not some other puppet? G: You’ll know as we go on with this interview :) JT: Alright, how would you like to introduce yourself? G: I’m a struggling musician. I think I got my passion for music from my Dad, he is a famous international drummer. Way back 1982, when he first visited the Philippines as part of their band’s World tour and after this Big Night at Olongapo, he had a one night shot of joy with my Nanay. He went back to the States and my Nanay was left with no idea that this drummer got her pregnant. After 25 years here I am singing songs, making music and waiting for my Dad’s recognition. My father’s name is Animal. JT: I’ve learned that your real name’s Gregorio. How’d you come up with “Gorgoro”?

Jobelle Tayawa Everyone may (or may not) have a mental record of puppets teaching how, in that Street, counting from 1 to 12 is so much fun, with draculas, grumpy green fellas in trash cans, and six-feet birds with imaginary anteater friends in the neighborhood. Sure, we may have said our bit of thanks to that orange guy professing love to a rubber duck, which, in retrospect, may have been a subliminal ploy to influence our bathing behaviors growing up. These memories are candy; that’s probably why parodies of our childhood amusement engage us all the more. Stuff of adult entertainment still have our puppet friends in business, staging their quarter-life crises on Broadway, and singing why “The Internet is for Porn”. But hear this: there’s another puppet on the rise in our own shores, armed with serious issues. Meet Gorgoro, frontman of the eponymous band, playing alongside musical mainstays Jeng Tan (Keltskross, The Pin-up Girls), Billy Reyes (Stonefree, Kikomachine), Manix Abrera (Kikomachine band and comics), Meh Reyes, and Jovi Reyes (both Matilda). While some rock stars are going for the sex-drugs-rock-‘n-roll ride, Gorgoro’s ultimate goal is to get recognized by his popular puppet for a dad. It hasn’t come easy, but he’s getting there. With his motley of websites, blogs, magazine appearances, a stint at Jessica Soho’s show, and a growing legion of fans, what more could he ask for (probably another T.V. appearance, but in those wish-granting programs instead)? An afternoon chat allows us to probe deeper into this prolific puppet’s mind.

Two, I wanna veer away from the shadow of my dad’s musicality. JT: So wait, you’re veering away from your dad’s musicality, but your goal’s really to get recognized by him. G: I just wanna prove to him that I have my own weapon of choice. Hopefully, he’ll be proud of me when the big day comes. Kumbaga parang Sean Lennon at John Lennon, sobra yung comparisson kasi they both sing. Pero kung nagdrummer si Sean sa palagay ko walang ganun. JT: Yeah, good point. When did you begin looking for him? Was it like a growing up thing? Did your mom always mention him to you?

esmerized by consumer retail mentality that focuses on brands more than cultural value, most of us have forgotten the diverse magnificence of artworks that reflect our country’s rich culture. We are in a luck considering there are shops like Silahis Arts and Artifacts that help preserve—and refresh our memories of— products we can forever be proud of. Established in 1966, the shop continues to feature unique mix of items that showcase the best of Pinoy craftsmanship.

Timber Tales

“We promote all kinds of Philippinemade products that are all made from natural materials. When you shop at our stores you will feel like you are in a museum. We like to educate all where these products came from and what kind of purpose it had,” says Silahis owner Mickey Mouse, whose fondness for wood dates back to his childhood years. “I was exposed to different kinds of woods early. Every time my parents would go around the country, they would bring me along and I would see the different kinds of woods

being used in this industry…I love all kinds of wood,” says Mouse. Of all the admiring qualities of this material, he especially lauds wood for its “Color, grain, and how it could be used and adapted for different things.” Today, he shares this love for timber to both fellow Pinoys and foreigners alike by offering wood furniture and knick-knacks in all shapes, sizes, and shades. Name it, they have it: dining sets, lounge chairs, benches, tables made of abaca, narra, kamagong, yakal, lawan—or combination of two or more of these wood variants sourced from major wood-manufacturing provinces like Ilocos and Batangas. The shop’s extensive collection of wood items, all with reasonable price tags, will make you think twice about venturing out of town in search for that perfect piece or going through the hassles of having something custom made. For sure you’ll find an item or two that would catch your fancy—be it Kamagong and Narra chess set, aweinspiring lover’s knot and embracing wood figures, Narra Chippendale dining chairs, or perhaps the wood artwork featuring the

Though the shop stocks up on timber furniture and décors, there’s no need to be alarmed and report them to the Department of Energy and Natural Resources for hasty use of the material. “I want to make it clear to all that the wood we use are not the endangered species, and that we should do our parts and plant trees because if we do not then eventually all (types of) wood will become endangered species,” the wood enthusiastic owner explains.

Native delicacies

The owner’s goal of educating Filipinos about indigenous crafts is especially evident in the way items come with a short, informative read on where the craft originated, who crafted it, and for what purpose it is. Some, if not most, of the items are obscure to the members of the younger generations which just prove the sad reality that local crafts are deteriorating for lack of support and interest. While in the shop, luxuriously take your

dessert—visitors can’t get enough of. At the wise prodding of the Engineer, WeatherWood was the choice flooring for the pool’s surrounding area. Its special component enables it to stay firm and beautiful even when repeatedly spilt with pool water or beaten hard by rain. With the furnishing phase and landscaping on the pipe line, the beachfront shelter is a work in progress. “The whole idea of living in the Philippines is enjoying the indoor, outdoor flow. I’d like to bring plants from outside inside,” says Barry when asked what he wishes to add to his already charming love nest. For a retired hardworking career man who has grown accustomed to the fast-paced lifestyle in the United States, there’s nothing quite like living year-round in a house that feels like vacation home and whom he shares with his precious loved one. Barry has grown fond of natural wood which he insisted on using for the built-in closets, beds, and even for the swimming pool deck.
