elcome to Gift Today’s annual home fragrance supplement. With so many beautifully scented products within its pages, it’s definitely a place you can get away from the allpervading scent of anti-bac hand gel that’s everywhere at the moment! The team’s recent visits to Top Drawer and Spring Fair proved home fragrance is still as popular in the gift industry as ever. There really is a huge breadth of product out there, something for every retail environment. And, the great thing for bricks and mortar retailers is, customers really do need to experience home fragrance in the flesh to understand products before they buy. Trends we’ve noticed at the shows include beautifully designed vessels that can be repurposed afterwards as trinket jars or posy holders, the growth of diffusers of all types, sophisticated scents that appeal to both men and women…the list goes on. There are fabulous products at all price points to share with your customers. From an innovative flower diffuser from Chiltern Candles to the ethically sourced soy wax melts from Something Different, there’s plenty to discover within these pages. I’m a big fan of our cover star Price’s Candles. The company has such a proud heritage going back to 1830 and yet they’re as still on trend as ever and offer products to appeal to all sectors of the market. Read more about them on page 12. As well as an overview of the best companies and products in the sector, I’ve also talked to some amazing people in the process of putting this supplement together. After chatting with her after her fascinating talk at Spring Fair, it was great to have an interview with Jennifer Genson, Senior Fragrance Manager for Newell Brands, owner of Yankee Candle. She explains how the company analyses current and future trends to ensure they’re always bringing newness and
innovation to their portfolio. And, we discover, she’s always been around fragrance as her parents owned a fragrance shop when she was growing up. Read more on page 20. As usual I was wowed by Ashleigh and Burwood’s stand at Spring Fair, which is why I asked the company’s visual merchandiser Olivia Collins to share her tips on making a beautifully fragranced instore display. Lots to take away from this piece on page 26. And last, but by no means least, I spoke to Wax Lyrical’s Dr Will Locke about the science and testing behind their products. He’s one of the UK’s leading home fragrance scientists, as well as chair of the technical committee for the British Candlemakers Federation. It’s clear there’s a lot of science stuff that goes on behind laboratory doors in the making and testing of candles but, it’s also reassuring to discover that human beings have their place too. Dr Will explains how the company have a number of people testing new frargances as no two people have the same sense of smell. Apparently it’s like fingerprints; a sense of smell is unique to each person. See page 30. And in addition to all this, we have lots of news, views and retail comment. There’s even a story about the Recycled Candle Co who create beautiful candles from scrap wax. If that’s not sustainability at work, I don’t know what is. Enjoy.
The views of the contributors expressed in this journal are not necessarily those of the publisher. Comments, letters and criticism are welcome.

News Awaken – the Yankee Candle 2020 Scent of the Year Yankee Candle has announced the launch of Awaken, its second annual Scent of the Year. The company partnered with global trend experts in the fields of fashion, wellness, lifestyle, and culture to uncover what will matter most to consumers in 2020. ‘We’ve learned through our research for Scent of the Year that there is a significant cultural shift away from always wanting more: more options, more communication, more material clutter. Increasingly, people want to simplify their lives, unplug from the constant chatter of technology, and reconnect with themselves and with those they care about,’ says Anna Whitton, Vice President of Marketing, Yankee Candle Company. ‘Consumers are seeking out meaningful experiences that bring them a greater sense of self.’ ‘At the heart of the 2020 Scent of the Year is a one-of-a-kind, crystalline mineral fragrance with grounding notes of driftwood and amber,’ says Jennifer Genson, Fragrance Development Lead, Yankee Candle Company. ‘With the clarity and brilliance of an uncut diamond, Awaken was developed to inspire you to open your eyes to the simple beauty of the everyday, giving you a clear, bright vision for the new year’. Awaken is available in a Large Classic Jar Candle at Yankee Candle retail locations, at high street retailers, Yankee Candle Corporate Stores, and online at yankeecandle.co.uk for a limited time.
Seeking signature scents Data from Mintel reveals that 70% of young UK consumers want to wear a ‘different fragrance to everyone else.’ In research revealed at the SEPAWA Congress in Berlin, demands for uniqueness are rising. Says Mintel’s global beauty analyst Margaux Caron, ‘Fragrance really is a territory or a place to explore differentiation and personalisation. ‘What’s really interesting is personality and moods are something that is addressed by consumers in fragrance, especially fragrances that are going to either let them express their mood of the day or mood in general, but also fragrances that are going to have an impact on their mood.’

The scent of Pantone’s Colour of the Year Firmenich, the world’s largest privately owned perfume and taste company, has partnered with Pantone to bring its 2020 Colour of the Year to life through bespoke fragrance and taste experiences. One of the first Pantone Sensory Partners, Firmenich put its world-class creativity to work to shape an immersive, multi-sensory experience for Pantone’s Classic Blue (19-4052). Firmenich flavourists created a natural, fresh, blueberry taste, while Firmenich perfumers crafted a unique fragrance symbolising the meeting of sky and sea. ‘It’s a pleasure working with Pantone’s Colour of the Year, as it gives us yet another opportunity to shape perfumery trends and popular culture. Not only did we develop a unique olfactive concept for Classic Blue, but we applied it to one of the industry’s largest growing segments, premium scented candles, to increase wellness and positive emotions in homes and offices everywhere,’ said Armand de Villoutreys, President, Perfumery & Ingredients, Firmenich. ‘Familiar and reassuring, blueberry and fresh green notes are a distinctive feature of Classic Blue,’ said Emmanuel Butstraen, President of Flavours, Firmenich. ‘Today, with our increasing focus on health and wellness, blueberries are in a real sense becoming rediscovered, and growing to be one of the most relevant.’

Chocolate treats without the guilt You’re probably familiar with Hotel Chocolat as a destination when you fancy some chocolate, but did you know you can also get your cacao hit without the calories? Check out the candles in the company’s home brand Rabot 1745. Expect the warm, comforting scents of cacao and vanilla rather than sweet sickly aromas.
The company that recycles used candles The Recycled Candle Company is the UK’s only candle recycling business. The premise of the business is to create beautiful candles from scrap wax, helping the environment and enabling people and businesses to meet their eco-friendly aims. Based in Gandy Street in the heart of Exeter’s indie shopping district, the company was founded by Richard Hills-Ingyon and Sargon Latchin in 2016. ‘The concept is simple,’ says Richard. ‘Wax from used candles is melted down, filtered, dyed and scented to create beautiful new candles. As far as we know, we’re the only company providing this opportunity for recycling candle wax in the UK, if not the world.’ The used wax comes from a variety of sources including individuals who drop old candles directly to the shop, hotels and restaurants, along with religious institutions including Bath Abbey which recently added a collection point not just for its own candles but for its congregation and visitors to use, too. The Recycled Candle Company organises a pick-up service for larger donations like this.
From the Isle of Harris to NY Jamie and Deenie McGowan, the founders of Essence of Harris, a fast growing luxury Scottish candle and home living company, showcased their range in the Big Apple at the NY Now show earlier this year. The company, that has grown to employ 26 staff on the Isle of Harris, showcased its unique range, including soy wax candles, reed-diffusers and home fragrance products, all of which have been carefully developed to be as local, sustainable and natural as possible. As part of its strong ethical stance, the business is committed to creating jobs on the remote Isle of Harris. Jamie McGowan modelled a kilt made from the company’s bespoke tartan that has been designed using the GPS location of the firm’s base in Tarbert, and has inspired a full range of Harris tartan lifestyle products. Stewart Roxburgh from Scottish Enterprise said: ‘With the global wellness market now exceeding $4.5 trillion, it is always pleasing to see a company prepare and launch new products that look to serve that market.’ essenceofharris.com

RETAILERS’ PANEL Members of our Panel talk home fragrance…
Ellie Bartle, Tigerlillys, Littleover, Derby What home fragrances do you stock in store? I stock candles, incense sticks and a range of Tisserand aromatherapy products, such as essential oils and room mists. My prices start at £2 for a box of organic incense sticks and go up to £16 for a gift set of Tisserand aromatherapy room mists. What products sell best for you? My Lily-Flame tinned candles have been one of my best-selling products for six years, and that’s not even limiting this to just home fragrance items. I think this is because they don’t require anything other than the candle itself. When buying gifts such as incense sticks or wax melts, there is often that question of whether the recipient has an incense stick holder or an oil burner or not. Plus, LilyFlame’s selection of candles is incredible so there is something to suit any and every taste. My Tisserand range is still very new here, but I’ve been overwhelmed by the response and demand we’ve had for it.
Eco concerns? As a business owner I feel I have a responsibility to put eco-conscious products on my shelves so customers have the option to buy in a more eco-conscious way. Customers can only buy what’s there, so it’s up to us to make that change. Happily, all of our home fragrance products are vegan, not tested on animals and are shifting towards either no or less plastic in their packaging.
‘My merchandising tip is to take advantage of starter package offers. Customers like variety when it comes to fragrances’
What scents sell well? Probably light florals as they’re not too sweet, not too strong and spicy, and are quite natural smelling. How important is vessel design? For candles, I think it does play a role when customers are choosing which to buy. Customers do try and co-ordinate the colours of the tins of the candles with their own home décor or that of the recipient. Perhaps this is also why light floral scents are popular as the tins for these particular candles are quite neutral in colour, as opposed to the bright green of Grass, the purple of Parma Violets and deep mauve of Black Cherry. 14 Gifts Today
How do you display home fragrance in store? Home fragrance items at Tigerlillys tend to be at eye level and in their own branded merchandise display stands. Keeping an eye on stock levels is also easier when we’re provided with dedicated stands for products. My merchandising tip is to take advantage of starter package offers. Customers like variety when it comes to fragrances, so having a wide selection is important. Plus, these packages usually come with display materials for you to use too.
JOIN OUR RETAILERS’ PANEL! Fancy having your say about the gift industry? Want to share news about your business? Just drop editor Sally Norton an email at sally@lemapublishing.co.uk. and you could see your business featured in the pages of Gifts Today! Look forward to hearing from you.

RETAILERS’ PANEL Michele Elliott House of Elliott, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire
What home fragrances do you stock? Makes include Lily-Flame, Pintail, Potters Crouch, Janie Wilson, and a local company called Embers that have a crackle wick. Packaging and appearance almost counts as much as the fragrance. We also sell Illumens diffusers, with ‘Poire’ being our top scent, and oil burner melts by a local company called Castaway Cottage. Eco concerns? We put a growing emphasis on soy wax candles and try to avoid plastic coverings on all the fragranced products. How do you display home fragrance in store? We always showcase a scent in the shop everyday, be it a candle burning or diffuser. We have a dedicated display unit for all our home fragrance products but we also dot them around the shop in displays.
Fiona Richards The Little Shop, Arnside, Cumbria What home fragrances do you stock? We stock Agnes + Cat, Pintail Candles and Vineyard Candles. What products sell best for you? Candles are definitely the best sellers. Wax melts and reed diffusers don’t sell as well. I also have customers who use soaps to fragrance rooms and wardrobes. What scents sell well? I would say that fruity scents are probably the best sellers overall, such as Pintail Candles’ Fig and Wild Pear, which sells well all year round. Eco concerns? I only buy soy and vegan candles, and don’t buy any blended or palm oil candles. I check that if we have fragrances that contain essential oils that are toxic to dogs or cats I advise my customers. We don’t stock any candles that have plastic in the packaging or lids. How do you display home fragrance in store? I always have an open sample of every fragrance for customers to smell. I use crates to group fragrances together in the rear of the shop, and I alternate which range is on display in the front of the shop to keep the shop looking fresh.

Home fragrance trends Yankee Candles
‘We launch hundreds of new fragrances every year We caught up with Jennifer Genson, Senior Fragrance Manager for Newell Brands, owner of Yankee Candle, to discover how the company analyses current and future trends to ensure they’re always bringing newness and innovation to their portfolio Jennifer, what’s your career journey to becoming Senior Fragrance Manager for Newell Brands, owner of Yankee Candle? I’ve always been passionate about fragrance. My parents owned a fragrance shop, so I’ve been surrounded by candles, diffusers and fragrances since childhood! I completed my masters at ISIPCA, Institute of Perfume and Cosmetics in Versailles, France. I’ve been working for Newell Brands for four years. In my first year I worked mainly on the
Yankee Candle portfolio of fragrances in Europe, then went on to become the Global Lead for fragrance development across all Newell Home Fragrance brands in 2017. These brands include Yankee Candle, WoodWick and Millefiori, amongst others. What does your job involve? I work closely with perfumers all around the world to design fragrances that best translate our brands and bring to life our concepts and story. We launch hundreds of new fragrances every year, so we are continuously analysing current and future trends and consumer preferences to ensure we are always bringing newness and innovation to the portfolio. For example, a key trend this AW20 is spice, which you’ll see coming through in new fragrances such as Black Peppercorn from WoodWick and Cinnamon & Cumin from Yankee Candle Elevation Collection. What do you love the most about your job? What I love about working with Newell Brands is that all of our brands have a different personality that allows me to have distinctive fragrance profiles for each of them. Why do you think candles are still considered such great gifts? Candles, and any home fragrance product for that matter, are a perfect way of creating ambience in your home. Whether it’s a seasonal scented candle such as Winter Garland from WoodWick, or an all-time favourite scent like a Yankee Candle Reed Diffuser in Clean Cotton, there’s something so
20 Gifts Today
special about giving and receiving fragrance. For me, a candle is a wonderfully emotional product, which makes it a great gift. Who doesn’t love to have a candle in their home to create that homely atmosphere? How important is the actual fragrance when it comes to candles? Fragrance is the number one purchasing driver for a candle. Of course, the design and the name are also very important as both should convey the experience you will get from the fragrance. Why is trend forecasting so important to product development in the home fragrance market? Candles are highly seasonal, so fragrances often reflect the consumer mindset during a specific season. Looking at upcoming seasonal trends is a way to ignite the perfumer’s creativity. We are always looking at new flavours in food, new materials in fashion and décor, and new ways of living that could inspire perfumers. What fragrances do you predict will be big for coming seasons? For spring/summer 2020, we will see more and more nature-inspired directions with consumers wanting to bring the outside in. For autumn/
winter 2020, keep an eye on spices and woody/ leathery scents. Cinnamon is of course still big but there are a lot of ‘new’ spices coming into the fragrance composition such as peppercorn, cumin and cardamom. For Christmas 2020 we are looking at a new twist on classics, like Holiday Hearth from Yankee Candle that has notes of cinnamon, clove, cedarwood, warm musk and vanilla cream.
‘I work closely with perfumers all around the world to design fragrances that best translate our brands and bring to life our concepts and story’
Why do you think these specific scents are so apt for these coming seasons? Those scents are transporting you directly to specific seasons by recalling, for example, the fresh cut grass scent of dewy spring mornings, the smell of autumn woods and leaves or the delicious pancakes you’ll prepare on Christmas morning.
How would you recommend the indie retailer goes about building a Home Fragrance offering from scratch? Where should they start? When you are starting to build your Home Fragrance assortment you should begin with the ‘everyday’ fragrances that the consumer can burn all year long in their home. These scents act as a foundation ensuring you have a good breadth of fragrance direction to appeal to most consumers. Then you need to offer an assortment of seasonal fragrances that are more suitable for a specific time of year. Similarly, consumers are more likely to purchase non-candle products in the warmer months, so having a range of formats such as Reed Diffusers and Melt Warmers is beneficial.

‘Our data reveals that candle sales are giving independent gift boutiques in the UK a much-needed boost,’ says Higor Torchia, UK country manager at Vend. ‘As the consumer hunger for unique products and unique in store experiences grows, it’s smaller retailers that are best placed to cater to these trends.’
Q&A: Wax Lyrical We caught up with Rachel Holmes, product development manager What do you think the big scent trends will be for 2020? Wild flower and herbal scents were among the fragrance trend predictions for this year and already we can see the slightly more subtle floral scents proving to be popular with customers. Our RHS Wildscents collection launched in Autumn 2019 and the botanic fragrance combinations led by water lily, oriental orchid, sunflower and rose are continuing to be sought-after this spring/summer. How important is sustainability? Sustainability continues to be at the forefront of consumers’ minds and with good reason. Responsibly sourcing ingredients is one element of this, for example we’re RSPO certified (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). Most recently we’ve concentrated on designing reusable products for our home fragrances. Our aim has been to produce vessels that will either be reused around the home or be refilled with fragrance, so that home fragrances become less disposable and more of a permanent fixture in the home. This influence can be seen in our new collection with Wrendale Designs where the vessels were designed to showcase the renowned illustration, and also with reuse purposes in mind, such as the egg cup and trinket candles. Importance of design in home fragrance products? Home fragrances are becoming long-standing pieces of décor as consumers are increasingly aware of waste and seeking ways to reuse items in the home. As a result, the industry has become just as led by product design as the development of fine fragrance blends. We believe candles and diffusers should complement the interior of the
home and this is why our partnership with Fired Earth has become one of our best-selling collections. Fired Earth have the authority on interior trends, prints and designs, whilst we can ensure the quality of the design is reflected in the premium fragrances that we know will also complement the home.

A retailer says… ‘You should use your candles in store with a sign advising what today’s fragrance is. It’s a good talking point with customers to comment on how lovely to shop smells. There’s nothing worse than going into a shop and commenting on the wonderful smell and being told it’s just ALL the candles!’ Karen Greig, Destined for Home, Edinburgh

From air traffic controller to candlemaker… The Chiltern Candle Co is a small artisan enterprise founded by Trish Preston-Whyte, a former military air traffic controller, who set up the company after a long and varied career in the Royal Air Force. Candle making had been a contrasting hobby for her creative outlets and she decided to leave the professional world behind to fulfil her dream of setting up her own business in the country. The Products Everything from the Chiltern Candle Co range is individually handmade in small batches by Trish in her small workshop using traditional methods with the utmost care and attention. Extracted from the oil of farmed soybean plants, the vegan wax Trish uses is 100% vegetable so her candles have a pure and strong scent throw. The wax is renewable, sustainable and biodegradable and contains no petroleum, paraffin, animal or beeswax products. The wax is melted in small batches and then hand poured once the measured fragrance has been added. The 100% cotton wicks are then placed at just the right time before the molten wax solidifies. The candles and diffusers are simply and elegantly packaged with a beautiful palette of colours. All candles have a personal note, with a batch number, to show they are handmade and not mass-produced. With Trish’s name on all the products, provenance and authenticity from the Chiltern Candle Co is guaranteed. ‘I decided to follow my dream and turn my passion of candle making into a business and set up the Chiltern Candle Co in 2016. Inspired by nature and the stunning Chiltern Hills of where I live, I designed and created my own brand of beautifully scented natural wax candles to bring the gorgeous fresh, fruity, floral and woody perfumes of the English countryside into the home’.

Home fragrance Visual Merchandiser
Super styling Olivia Collins, visual merchandiser with home fragrance company Ashleigh & Burwood, shares her tips on making a beautifully fragranced instore display Olivia, what’s your career journey? I studied Display Design and trained up at Burberry, The Scotch House and Liberty within their display departments. I was then employed by Harrods as a display designer where I worked until I had my family. Once my children were older I worked as a visual merchandiser for a large garden centre chain that led to my current position. What’s most important in home fragrance display – visual or scent? Our customers know and trust us for our original English fragrances as well as our beautiful packaging. I allow the attractive packaging do the talking by keeping simple straight lines. Fragrance is of equal importance to the visual so we always offer a tester for the customer to sample.
How important is it for the display to reflect the actual scent of the products? Adding props really helps to captivate your customers and deliver the fragrance message. We have a vast array of fragrances, so whether you wish to highlight our peony fragrance in The Scented Home collection by adding artificial peony flowers in summer, or using gourds in the autumn with our Pumpkin Latte fragrance, enhancing the fragrance stories with props can be quite simple and effective. Hoe do you go about ‘storytelling’ in visual merchandising? Think about your bestselling fragrances, your customer demographic and product location. This is all vital in ensuring you benefit in sales. Keep collections together within a fixture so that the customer can shop it easily and understand each range. This will allow a story to be told that will be easily understood by shoppers. How do you encourage customers to interact with products in a display? It’s vital to have testers for all of our products, especially our Lamp Fragrances. Our Lamp Fragrance scent is only released when the product is in use, so it is really important that one of our 10ml fragrance testers is nearby for the customer to smell before they buy. How would you suggest retailers could display spring/summer launches effectively - on a budget!

Our new limited edition Japanese collection is the perfect summer addition to The Scented Home range. Diffusers and candles in decorative packaging really make a visual statement. These products would work well merchandised with some simple modern houseplants to enhance the display. We also have POS for this range that’s important in delivering the fragrance message to the customer. This provides understanding of the fragrance notes in each product. These are available free of charge with an order. Your top three tips for a retailer who’s new to home fragrance - how can they display it best, again on a budget? 1) Cross merchandising. Pick out a few home fragrance products together with complementary products from elsewhere in your store to create an appealing lifestyle look. 2) Make use of the free POS. Use POS materials that are provided, especially fragrance testers. 3) Get creative with display furniture for a unique look. Odd tables can be used to create height difference and interest. Charity shops can be a cheap place to find props and display furniture.

Home fragrance Scientist
Testing, testing
Wax Lyrical’s Dr Will Locke, one of the UK’s leading home fragrance scientists, with over 40 years in the business, explains the science behind candles Q: Dr Will, what’s your role at Wax Lyrical? A: I am research, development and compliance manager. We produce 17 million quality Britishmade products a year across a vast range of candles and reed diffusers. We will have 200 different fragrances across our product range at any one time, with new fragrances and new products being tested all the time, with different ingredients to appeal to different markets around the world. They're all tested by us in our state-ofthe-art, climate-controlled lab.
Q: How do are you a home fragrance expert for Wax Lyrical? A: I am a scientist with a PhD in chemistry from Reading University. Through my work in the home fragrance industry I am also chair of the technical committee for the British Candlemakers Federation and also sit on the equivalent European body, advising on quality and safety.
‘No computer will tell you exactly how a candle will burn, there are too many variables’ Q: What are the factors that affect a candle’s performance? A: Let’s start with the wick. Wick selection can have a major impact on performance, depending on the material used, the length, number of fibres, braiding pattern, and tension put into it. All wicks are designed to curl as they burn. People might think it’s the wick that’s burning but it’s not, it’s actually the wax. Then there are the air conditions. You probably didn’t know the type of turbulence that can affect an aeroplane on your holiday flight can also affect a candle’s performance in your living room. It’s all down to the similar movement and conflict of hot and cold air. The tip of a candle reaches between 1200 to 1400 degrees centigrade. The type of container will also be a factor. If a container, or vessel, is tall and thin, and a candle has burned down towards the bottom (advice is to stop a candle burning at the last 0.5cm), then there’s more opportunity for conflict between the
30 Gifts Today
hot air coming from the tip of the flame and the cold air coming from a room within the space of the candle container. This can cause the candle’s flame to flicker more than it usually would and that could lead to a more erratic burn, which can affect the length of the overall burn, and problems such as tunnelling and sooting. Q: Why is it necessary to carry out this extensive level of testing? A: No computer will tell you exactly how a candle will burn, there are too many variables. Any new fragrance or new container needs to be tested in this way. Q: What do you monitor during testing? A: Each set of burning candles has a data sheet recording its performance during its burn. We test flame height, tunnelling (where the burn leaves an area of wax within the vessel which resembles a tunnel), carbon deposits, heat and sooting. We also carry out further testing to simulate how a candle might age, and also how it will keep its characteristics when subjected to different lighting. You wouldn’t want the colour of a candle to change over time once you got it home. Q: Are Wax Lyrical products tested for their fragrance? A: Yes, but by a different team. We test people to ensure they have the sense of smell required for the selection of fragrances. It’s important we have a number of people doing that as no two people have the same sense of smell. It’s like fingerprints; a sense of smell is unique to each person. We currently have four ‘expert noses’ in the team.
